There will be no abandoned projects in Ondo, says commissioner

Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu will not leave behind uncompleted projects when his tenure expires, Commissioner for Information and Orientation Bamidele Ademola-Olateju said yesterday.

She said the administration would prioritise security in a bid to prevent a repeat of Owo church massacre and other acts of banditry and terror.

She clarified government’s position on the installation of closed-circuit television (CCTV) in churches, markets and other public places, saying the measure was meant to ensure surveillance and boost security.

“The price of safety is high in Ondo State. We need the CCTV for surveillance since churches, markets and other public places have become soft targets,” she told reporters in Lagos.

She added: “Churches are not being taxed. They are enjoined to beef up security on their premises.”

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Toying Onisile and Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Richard Olabode, the commissioner said there will be no abandoned projects when Akeredolu completes his second term.

Ademola-Olateju highlighted key infrastructural projects already completed by the administration, including Akure township roads, dualised Ikare-Arigidi Road, flyover at Ore Junction, Okitipupa-Igbokoda virgin road and Isarun-Igbara Oke, Orita Obele Road.

She said efforts were being made to complete the Owo and Oda road projects, while the government was repositioning the health sector.

The commissioner described Akeredolu as a leader bubbling with moral courage, stressing that he had offered an effective leadership across the sectors.

Ademola-Olateju reflected on the terror attacks that shook Owo, lamenting that the terrorists wreaked a monumental havoc.

She said the memory of the killings, which occurred at St. Mary Catholic Church, near Olowo of Owo’s palace in the heart of the ancient town, would linger.

The commissioner noted that the assailants, who unleashed terror, had studied the geography of the place before they struck.

Ademola-Olateju said the perpetrators, who had links with ISWAP, lodged in the house of an Ebira tailor in the vicinity.

She said members of the ethnic group were associated with kidnappings in the area.

The commissioner said the Ebira monarch had apologised to the state government.

She said the gory scene and plight of victims in a pool of blood were worrisome, recalling that people could not bear the sight of 22 coffins brought to the funeral service.

Ademola-Olateju said 40 people died on the spot, while one victim later died in hospital.

She added: “Some young Ebira people no longer see farming as the route to prosperity when they feel they can get N10 million from one kidnapping.”

Lagos records two kidnap cases in seven months, says CP

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi, has revealed that only two kidnap cases were recorded in Lagos within the past seven months.

He said this on Friday evening at Lagos Country Club, Ikeja where he was hosted to a town hall meeting.

Addressing members of the premium family club earlier which he also belongs to, Alabi identified the major crimes in Lagos as traffic robbery, cultism and house breaking and stealing but assured that the police was on top of its game.

“For seven months now, we have had only two kidnapping cases. One, along the Festac Area and the other in Epe,” said the top cop who attended the event with his wife.

“For the past seven months, I can say that we have not been doing badly. But we are not there yet. That’s the fact. Lagos has been one of the most relatively peaceful states in the country. I am in a position to say this because I have the statistics. On a daily basis, all the Commissioners of Police throughout the states are expected to render situation report of the crime situation in their various commands to Force Headquarters and their zonal Commanders.”

Alabi who became the Lagos State Police Commissioner in January 2022, also said the Command is tackling cultism in areas like Ijora Badia, Ikorodu, Agege and Orile axis.

“Within the past seven months, we have been able to arrest and prosecute not less than 250 cultists.”

Alabi said that because Lagos is the most densely populated and commercialised state, it was expected to have an upsurge in crime but reverse is the case.

“We have states that are not as commercialised as Lagos, that are not as industrialised as Lagos, but the crime rates in those states are more than what we are experiencing in Lagos.”

He however, reiterated the need for community policing in the state.

“Policing is not for Nigeria Police alone. It is everybody’s business. So, everybody must get involved.” Alabi also lauded the Lagos State government for its support to the police.

“Lagos State has always been supporting, right from Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, Babatunde Raji Fashola, Akinwunmi Ambode and our current Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” he said.

“The support that they have been giving Lagos State police has been very tremendous. And that has made it possible for us to really put our professional expertise to bear.”

The President, Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, Arc Funmi Bamkole, thanked the Commissioner of Police for honouring the invitation to engage with members.

ASUU strike: Deploy your numerical strength to end incessant strike, lawmaker charges students

A federal lawmaker representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa federal constituency at the House of Representatives, Shina Peller has charged Nigerian students to deploy their numeric strength in the forthcoming 2023 general election to end incessant strike actions in the nation’s ivory towers.

Peller expressed utter displeasure over the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) which has seen undergraduates in Nigerian universities out of school for 194 days with no desirable resolve from the concerned authorities.

Peller described the situation as worrisome and called on Nigerian students to make their numbers count by ensuring that the country’s next set of leaders are patriotic and selfless Nigerians.

In a press statement by Mr. Kola Popoola, the Chief Press Secretary to the lawmaker, a copy made available to journalists in Ibadan yesterday,  Peller called on Nigerian students to leverage on their numerical strength and influence to change the narrative of political leadership in the country for better.

Peller was inducted with Life Patron of NANS and also given an award of Outstanding Leadership by the association as part of activities to celebrate the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) 40th Anniversary held in Abuja on Thursday.

Explaining the rationale behind the choice of Hon. Peller as the Life Patron of the National Association of Nigerian Students, the NANS President, Sunday Asefon, stated that the lawmaker has always been an advocate of Nigerian students and youth, and that he is ever concerned about their welfare and development.

It would be recalled that Hon. Peller, through his NGO, Lead Generation Initiative (LGI), has successfully trained thousands of youths across the country on effective leadership skills, strategic communication, civic responsibility, active citizenship and nation building.

Some of the dignitaries in attendance at the 40th Anniversary of NANS were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Boss Mustapha, Minister for Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare, Kogi State Governor, Dr. Yahya Bello, Executive Secretary, PTDF, Dr. Bello Aliyu Gusau, CEO, Galaxy Backbone, Prof. Muhammed Abubakar, Special Adviser on Federal Matters to Ekiti State Governor, Hon. Tackle Nigeria’s problems from roots – group

“Nigeria is not doing well, Nigeria is underperforming, but trees do not grow from the top; therefore to solve Nigeria’s problems, we must deal with it from the roots.”

The above was the submission of Bishop Dr. Priscilla Otuya, President, Mothers of the Nations and Founder, International Federation of Female Ministers Groups and Organisation (IFFMGO).

Speaking at the first official outing of IFFMGO in Lagos, yesterday, with the theme ‘Stop the Satanic Propaganda Against Nigeria’, Bishop Otuya said, “This Satanic propaganda being perpetrated by some people is the only reason Nigeria is where it is 60 years after independence.”

She said “Nigerians have been so dehumanised that we now live by fate rather than by faith; and this is not acceptable.”

She also called for more participation of women and the church in politics.”There is too much relegation of women in this country and that is not of God.”

She condemned a situation where a delegation of the Nigerian government would go abroad on an official mission and there would be no single women among them.

“Are there no Deborah or Esther in this country? It is time for you, our fathers, to look inwards. We have come like mothers to partner with God for the birthing of a new Nigeria.”

She also condemned fighting and killings in the name of God.

“God is neither a Christian nor a Muslim. He is a spirit. The God that people are fighting for is no God. We are therefore saying stop the killing in the name of God. Nigerians love one another and they have been living and doing business peacefully without rancour.”

Lending her voice, Hon. Archbishop Dr Glory Chy Abughi, National Coordinator and Patron, IFFMGO, said a country that produced the likes of the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala has no business relegating its women.

“When it comes to marriage, the man is the head but when it comes to leadership that has to do with the nation, women should be given opportunities like God gave Deborah.

To the women, Archbishop Abughi said: “We want our women to rise and come together in one accord and say no, else the negative trend continues.”
