Yoruba must not only pray, says Wale Oshun

The National Chairman, Afenifere Renewal Group, Mr Wale Oshun, said yesterday that the Yoruba must not base the outcome of their lives on prayer alone.

He lamented that some Yorubas were drifting from the notion of “work and pray” to “pray and pray”, adding that the consequences were already staring the people in the face.

Oshun, a former House of Representatives Chief Whip, spoke in Iwo at the 20th anniversary and launch of a charitable foundation in honour of a former chairman of Iwo Local government, Late Pa Ben Adisa

He noted that no society grows without work and virile work ethics.

“I dare say at this stage, that we as a people, particularly, we Yoruba are now drifting; drifting from the notion of work and pray to pray and pray. No society grows without work and virile work ethics. Pa Akinola showed the essence of dedicating oneself to his/her work. It is obvious however where the notion ‘pray and pray’ is leading to.

“The consequences of pray and pray are now staring all in the face. Even so-called religious leaders are known to be involved in all sorts of financial crimes, ‘Yahoo plus’ as they call it, and all sorts of rituals including human rituals for money-making”.

10 Secondary school students in Iwo were given scholarships during the programme.

Oyo APC appoints 24-man reconciliation committee

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has appointed a former Senator, Olufemi Lanlehin, as chairman of its 24-man reconciliation committee.

Lanlehin represented Oyo South Senatorial district between 2011 and 2015.

The committee, according to Oyo APC chairman Isaac Omodewu, would help settle all grievances that arose from the party congresses and primaries and foster unity ahead of the 2023 general election.

The secretary of the committee is Alhaji Tajudeen Olanite.

Other members of the committee are Dr. Ameed Ayinde, Lasun Adebunmi, Gbadamosi Abu Adejare, Timothy Jolaoso, Oladayo Lawal, Badmos Bukola, Sunday Ajadi, S. O. Olaoye, Balogun Gaphar Oyetola and Funke Olayanju

Adewale Adepoju, Kakako Ayinla, Ramon Sadiq, Olorode Oluade, Kunle Folarin, Akande Abass, Kareem Adebayo, Dr Adepeju Esan, Tunde Ajibola, Remi Olalekan, Oke Kolawole and Hafeez Omobolaji Repete are also members of the committee.

Omodewu, while inaugurating the committee at the party Secretariat in Oke-Ado, Ibadan, urged party members to cooperate with the committee for an amicable resolution of the crisis rocking the party.

”You are elderly and critical stakeholders of our party. We cannot give you terms of reference. All we want from you is to use your experiences and influences to resolve all internal wrangling within APC. Reconciliation is an ongoing process.

“Therefore, we will be expecting the first situation report in two weeks. There are issues from congresses and primaries. Please resolve all the differences”, he said.

Meanwhile, a group within the party, the Progressives Front, warned that the crisis could adversely affect the party’s fortunes in the state if the problem was not quickly nipped in the bud.

It gave the warning in a statement by its State Coordinator, Tunde Oladosu, in reaction to the spate of defections in the party in the aftermath of the party primaries.

Oladosu said: “Many are leaving the party in droves. The structures are collapsing; those who are supposed to work for the party have moved to alternate parties, not because of anything but because they felt cheated.

“Those who have not left have vowed to work against the party from within. This is exactly what happened in the 2019 general elections that led to the loss of the governorship and even the presidential elections to the opposition”.

Bello sad the team was raised to also ‘formalise the structured and methodical approach to gaining universal adoption of handwashing and faecal sludge disposal, behaviours that are expected to reduce disease-causing micro-organisms and parasite transmission’.

He added: “The State Planning and Implementation committee (SPIC), drawn from different sectors, will see to the successful monitoring of the programme while also carrying out advocacies at the state and at local government areas.

“The project entails disseminating knowledge and understanding of hygiene practices, as well as their associated health hazards to low-income populations. It is also to raise hygiene awareness among people in the target communities, with a focus on hygiene education for women and girls.

“If sanitation and hygiene are vital, then stakeholders like you, who fight to promote water supply, sanitation and hygiene, are critical. We all need to persuade others because many people today still take hygiene for granted, try to hide it, or have no idea what to do or why hygiene is important. However, if we are to become a healthy and productive society, capable of contributing to the nation’s long-term growth and development, everyone must understand and appreciate how.

“We’ve gathered here today to start a vital programme aimed at promoting and educating the residents of Ikorodu North and Ojodu LCDAs on hygiene. Lagos State government, through the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, has been in the campaign for hygiene and public health before today. The ministry has embarked on the review of WASH policy for the State in collaboration with stakeholders to achieve a robust institution and proper institutional arrangement capable of delivering on the goal of access to potable water and sanitation to all in the state.

“The ministry has also embarked on sensitising the people on handwashing and hygiene practices, this is backed up by the provision of handwashing facilities in schools, markets and correctional facilities across the state. We have not accomplished all these in isolation; we have done so with the active engagement of several partners, including federal and local governments as well as WaterAid Nigeria and other development partners…”

The project will be carried out in partnership with WaterAid Nigeria and Kimberly Clark.

Governorship candidate unveils ex-Rep as running mate

Kwara state People Democratic Party (PDP) is more united to win the governorship seat and all other elective positions come 2023 general elections in the state, party Chairman and governorship candidate Hon Babatunde Mohammed and Alhaji Shuaib Y. Abdullahi have said.

Hon Mohammed specifically attributed the unity in the party to the leadership qualities of former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

PDP chair said that “in the aftermath of the PDP primaries, some states are still enmeshed in crisis. But that is not the case in our party in the state. Post primaries, Kwara PDP has come out stronger and more united.”

Mohamed said this yesterday in Ilorin, the state capital while presenting certificate of return to the governorship candidate and the unveiling of his running mate, Hon. Gbenga Makanjuola.

Alhaji Abdullahi was optimistic that PDP would erase the ‘hardships and economic woes’ the APC controlled government at the state and the federal levels foisted on Nigerians.

The programme also featured the presentation of certificates of return to all the party’s House of Assembly candidates, House of Representatives and Senatorial candidates.

The PDP governorship candidate called on members to unite and collectively root out the APC across the states and at the federal level come 2023.

The PDP umbrella will cover Kwara and Nigeria as a whole from the ruining brutality and economic woes the APC foisted on  Nigerians come 2023.

The two terms House of Representatives member promised to work hand-in-hand with the governorship candidate to address “the issue of poverty, insecurity, political decadence, financial misappropriation, lack of respect for rule of law, transparency and dwindling state of economy bedeviling the state when elected in the 2023 general elections”.

He assured the people of Kwara that Abdullahi/Makanjuola ticket would usher in a fresh air with a new direction to address failures of the APC administration.
