APC remains the party to beat, Oyetola boasts

Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) remained the party to beat in the 2023 general elections.

He spoke yesterday when he was received by party faithful when he returned from the party’s national convention in Abuja.

Governor Oyetola, who landed at the Akure airport, was given a tumultuous welcome by party faithful who waited to receive him at Owena-Ijesa, Ipetu-Ijesa, Erin-Oke, Ilesa, Idominasi, Kajola and Osogbo.

Oyetola thanked his supporters and party loyalists, saying the rousing welcome was a testament to the fact that they are solidly behind him and the party.

He urged them to remain steadfast and resolute in the collective quest to move the party forward and ensure all-round success in all elections.

The governor also assured the party’s faithful of better days ahead, saying the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu as the party’s presidential candidate was a clear manifestation of good things for Nigerians.

He said: “I am very happy to see you. Your large turnout is an indication that our party is atop. I have come home with good tidings from Abuja. We have gone, we have seen and we have conquered. Asiwaju’s victory is victory for all. As you can see, this is our victory. It is a victory for Osun, Southwest and indeed Nigeria and Nigerians.

“We must thank President Muhammadu Buhari for allowing a free, fair, credible and transparent process of selecting the flag-bearer of our party. It is to his credit that everything went well without manipulation. I must equally thank the governors from the North for standing by us and for ensuring that the party’s flag-bearer is chosen from the South.

“I must also thank our delegates, particularly those from Osun, for performing wonderfully and for not allowing themselves to be bought over by anyone. They did excellently well and they didn’t allow themselves to be compromised.

“We all know what Asiwaju did in Lagos State. We all know how he turned the state to a mega city and commercial nerve centre of the country. This is what he is going to replicate when elected as President. Our time has come and we stand to gain a lot from this. Let’s remain united and work in unison for the success of our party. APC remains the party to beat here in Osun and at the centre.”

Owo massacre: Yorubaland can’t be conquered, says Akintoye

The Federal Government’s declaration that the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists were responsible for last Sunday’s killing of worshippers at St Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State has vindicated our earlier position, President, Ilana Omoo Oodua Worldwide, Prof Banji Akintoye said yesterday.

The group said Yorubaland cannot be subjugated or conquered. It warned the invaders to leave their land or face the wrath of the people.

In a statement by its Communication Manager Maxwell Adeleye, the Yoruba nation group said: “The declaration of the Federal Government that ISWAP was responsible for the Owo massacre is a vindication of our earlier position that Yorubaland has been encircled by foreign terrorists disguising as herdsmen.

“We therefore reinstate our earlier position that the Government of Ondo-State should declare an emergency on the activities of herdsmen in Ondo-Stat e. All herdsmen operating in Ondo State should be profiled. Those in the bush must be flushed out.

“The terrorists who were imported through the Northwest and transported to the South through trailers are obviously in our territory to subjugate us and take over our land but they are being warned now to leave or face the wrath of our people. Yoruba Land cannot be subjugated or conquered.

“These invaders are particularly not happy that Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of Ondo-State has been intercepting them in Ondo-State while coming from the North. We urge Akeredolu not to be intimidated. History shall be kind to him. The Yoruba people shall triumph, “the statement added.

    Osun 2022: I’ll not betray my conscience-Oyetola

Osun Governor Gboyega Oyetola has said he will never betray his conscience in fulfilling his campaign promises if re-elected in the July 16 gubernatorial poll.

Oyetola said the falsehood being peddled around by the opposition parties that he would not fulfill his campaign promises when re-elected should be disregarded.

The Governor said this during an engagement programme with members of Osun State Automobile Technician Association on Sunday in Osogbo.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Civic Engagement, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, Oyetola said his journey into politics was for service delivery and not for personal gain or deception.

The Governor, who specifically assured civil servants and retirees in the State of his commitment to their welfare, urged them not to fall into the antics of the opposition parties.

Oyetola said since beginning of his administration in the last three and half years, he had not renege in the payment of pension and salaries of workers.

He said the rumuor by the opposition parties that he would stop the payment, when re-elected is a dirty politics taken too far.

The Governor, who said he would still do more in his second term, urged the electorate not allow desperate politicians to deceive them.

“Since the beginning of our administration, we had spent N43 billion on payment of pension for retirees and we will not stop.

“Osun is also one of the few states in the country that had implemented the minimum wage and we had been consistent in the payment.

“Those who are spreading falsehood that I will stop paying attention to the welfare of workers and our senior citizen are not to be trusted because they have nothing to offer,” he said.

The Governor pledged when re-elected he would consolidate on the achievements his administration had made in the last three and half years.

Oyetola said the giant stride of the government in the areas of education, infrastructure, health, empowerment, rural development, among others would not stop.

The Governor, however, urged the electorate to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) to support him in the coming election

Oyetola said that he will not betray the trust of the people nor his conscience in service delivery in his second term in office.

Chairman of the association, Ajibola Akinola, commended the Governor for the strides he had accomplished in infrastructure and amenities across the state.

Akinola appealed to the governor to assist members of the association with more soft loans to boost their businesses.

He also promised that the association would support his re-election for the continuation of the good work in the State.

Man rejects family’s shrine leadership in Ile-Ife, goes into hiding

Residents of Ile-Ife have been talking about the strange case of Mr. Azeez Rasheed, who has been missing from his home since June 3rd, 2022.

Neighbours said the father and devoted Muslim fled his residence at 13, Ooni Ilare Street Ile-Ife, after pressure from extended family to take up a role he strongly refused.

According to reports, the family insisted that Rasheed must become the new “Head of Abore” at the Sasara Shrine located at Ejesi Ika Compound, Oduduwa College Road, Ogbondo, Ile-Ife, a position traditionally passed down in his lineage.

But Rasheed, who has been practicing Islam since childhood under the care of his uncle, rejected the request on religious grounds.

Tension escalated after the death of his father in 2022. Family members repeatedly visited his home to demand that he assume the shrine leadership as the first son of the deceased.

Things allegedly turned violent when, during one of those visits, an Orisha priest slapped Rasheed’s wife, accusing her of hiding her husband.

On another occasion, a tenant reportedly that a ritual sacrifice was dropped at his doorstep, an act that frightened neighbors and pushed Rasheed to go into hiding with his family.

When our correspondent spoke with shrine leaders, Chief Ifagbemi, the Abore of the shrine, insisted that there was no intention to harm Rasheed.

“We only want to carry out what the ancestors demand. As long as he is alive, it is compulsory he becomes the Head of Abore,” he said.

Another elder, Chief Ifakale, admitted that emissaries had been sent “by force” to persuade him.

Not everyone agrees with the shrine’s position. Pastor Gabriel, a local cleric familiar with the family, described Rasheed’s decision to run as the only way to save his life.

He recalled that in 2015, Rasheed’s uncle who also resisted becoming Head of Abore was mysteriously killed. “It’s either you accept or they kill you spiritually. I know what happened to his uncle, and I fear the same fate could befall him,” he said.

Rasheed’s mother, Mrs. Lassi Omoyemi, broke down in tears during an interview.

She pleaded for her son’s safety, saying she could not bear to lose him the way she lost her brother-in-law years ago.

Imam Daud Imam of Rasheed’s mosque condemned the situation, calling it an infringement on religious freedom.

“Faith is a personal choice. No one should be forced into roles that go against their beliefs. We urge the authorities to intervene,” the imam said.

For now, the whereabouts of Rasheed and family remain unknown.

Neighbours and community leaders are hoping for a peaceful resolution to what has become a troubling clash between tradition and personal faith in Ile-Ife.

“The Governor recruited over one thousand teachers in public schools despite lean receipt of allocation from the federation account as the 34th least FAAC allocation receiving state out of the 36 states of the federation.

“The Governor has rehabilitated and reconstructed over 500 kilometers of roads, among many other numerous achievements within the spate of his assumption of office.

  • ‘Nigerians suffering leadership problem’

    ‘Nigerians suffering leadership problem’

Prince Adewole Adebayo is a presidential aspirant of the Social Democratic Party, (SDP). In this interview with Samson Oti, Adebayo spoke on why Nigerians should consider alternatives to solve the numerous challenges facing the nation. Excerpts:

What is your thought about the rule of law in this country as a lawyer?

With due respect, there is no rule of law yet in this country. There is only the rule of persons. Let me give you the benchmark. When there is a rule of law, a change of government will not affect it because rule of law is where the law is no longer in the hands of the government to enforce. The rule of law is that if I am in Council, as President, if a police constable sends a note to me in the council through the security that they want to arrest the Attorney General because he has just used his car to knock somebody on the way to the council meeting, I will honor it. That’s when you have the rule of law. That is to say, the institution of the State, like the police and all of that, are free from government interference. And that when I am in government, I fear the police as much as the man who is selling oranges on the streets. So that’s when you have the rule of law. So we will get there. That is the journey we need to get to but we need to define it well. So when they say, for example, a certain president is helping the rule of law, you don’t have a rule of law because rule of law is not the party manifesto.

You are a lawyer and a businessman because you are also the founder of Caftan TV, among other business interests. How true is it that one needs some experience in governance before joining politics?

Let me confess in public that I do not have any experience in bad governance. So I have not been part of those who have been misgoverning the country. So, that lack of experience in doing bad things I admit I don’t have. However, when you want to make a decision in the public sector, the only difference is the money doesn’t belong to you. It belongs to the people. Everything you do in a managerial field both private sector and public sector is the same. If I am managing this station, as a private station, it is the same principle as that of a public station. The only difference is that profit interest or motive is downplayed but if I need to provide electricity. I need to provide it. It doesn’t matter if I am in government or outside. Leadership in public service is not about forming an alliance where, for example, we have this GSM principle Governor. Senator. Minister. So if you are a failed minister, you are in charge of housing. People don’t have housing. You cannot come to say, I was a Minister. I have experience. No, you can only say you had an opportunity to serve and you failed. If you are a Governor and you spent eight years and bankrupted the State, you cannot say you have experience in managing a State. No, you will say, I was given an opportunity to manage State, I mismanaged it.

You can only be good at it if you have been good at it. If you have to give him more opportunities than me, does it mean that you are better than my experience? I have represented and advised the government. I have consulted for the government, Nigeria and overseas. Let me say what can happen to you if you have no government experience. You come to an environment and you do not know how decisions are made. You do not know the facts on ground. That’s not my case. If you ask me when it comes to every critical aspect in terms of security, it will surprise you to know that I know more about the strength of the military and the challenges they face than the C-I-C who is in charge of them but who doesn’t listen to them. You can see in this country that people outside have more defense and security intelligence than the people inside government. When some incumbents who are there now when they came in 2015 in spite of having been in government all their lives, they came back and said ‘oh, we are shocked. We didn’t know the government was this bad.’ But we were out there advising them that this is what it is. So there isn’t anything in government that is not about you. First, mastering the issues, having the facts and surrounding yourself with competent people. These kinds of people are available. The only problem is that they don’t have money to give the delegates.

What gives you hope that you are going to win? Have you thought about losing N35m?

First, we have problems that are human problems. There are no natural problems. There are some countries where their problems are natural, not human causes. I lived in California for many years. In Nigeria, there are no natural problems. Now, in economics, the whole idea of Economics with all the books written on Economics, is based on the principle of scarcity. That is an environment of scarce resources. You have to make economic choices in Nigeria. No scarcity. Every developmental resource that we need is in abundance. There is no scarcity of human beings. There are some countries that want to develop, they have to import labor. We don’t have to. They have to import food. We don’t have to have to. They have to import water. We don’t have to. The whole geopolitics of Europe is that they have to import gas. That’s why everybody’s looking toward Russia and Ukraine. We don’t have any of this. So it goes down to one thing: that we have a leadership problem. Now, if you address that leadership problem, then you have solved all our problems. Now, what do you do about leadership? To change the leadership, you have to expand the leadership pool. You can’t have 30 people who for 60 years have to choose themselves to become the leader of the country and when you have done it and people have forgotten your errors, they wait for some years and bring you back again. So we said, no what you can do if you want to change the country and you know that leadership is the problem, then you need to put more people into the leadership pool. How do you put them in the leadership pool? You put them into politics. You test them out and their understanding of the issues in the country? And they can start to provide solutions to them. Look at their lives if they live up to 40 years. You look at where they worked. Were they good workers? When they went into business, were they ethical? When they went into public service, were they efficient and patriotic? Then you test them on whether they understand the issues at stake today. If you put all that together then you can now choose them as a leader because you have nothing to lose.

You have been choosing from the same pool. There’s no Head of State that can honestly say I have not sent something by way of advice but it’s not that they don’t know what is right. The issue is that what is right has a price. That price requires selflessness, not the traditional way we operate where when I am in power, I share the resources of the country among my friends-The Old Boys network. I cover their errors and reserve positions for your children and you reserve for my children. And if they are competent or not, we don’t care. We can put the person in charge of critical infrastructure and you can break it down. And if you are caught with N80b and your uncle can call me and say ‘Okay, look at that small boy. Okay, well, don’t worry. Let them make noise for three months afterward and we will help him out.’ So all those things are the reason why we are not progressing. It’s not that our problems defy human nature. No. If you go to government offices, as I do on many occasions, you will see that the person elected as a Governor or President may spend a substantial hour of the day not even doing the people’s business. He may be with his party chairman, discussing party issues. So they don’t have time to do work. You may see a Minister that spends half of his time on things that don’t have to do with his ministry.

So it is not that our problems are so complicated that we are always in the church and in the mosque, round the clock, praying for divine intervention. You don’t need divine intervention to clean your room if you have a broom. But if you don’t want to do it, you can’t be looking for divine intervention. Problems, however small, need somebody who wants to solve them. It is the person who doesn’t want to solve them, or who, in addition to that, wants to use this problem to make money. So you have insecurity, for example, I can send two battalions, two guys is even enough to go and knock them out. I realized no, why should I do that?. I can turn it into an N1 trillion budget and make my friends rich and become rich myself. When I turn into an N1 trillion budget, I get used to it. Then I said ‘no, let me turn it into an N7 trillion budget.’ It goes on like that. But it is a problem I can easily solve.

Yesterday, my campaign manager was going to Zamfara State and he called me to say ‘we are in panic’. So what happened? They said ‘bandits stopped us on the way’. Then a few hours later, they called back and said, well, we can go now. I said what happened? Did you see the army? He said no they called local hunters and local hunters chased the bandits away. So, I said, there are bandits in this country that local hunters can chase away but the army cannot chase away? So that’s one example that can be adopted but it doesn’t make it scientific. If you do research, you will find out that every problem from security to poverty to collapsed infrastructure are places where people make their money. There are people in this country who haven’t done any decent job in 40 years. There is an estate, out of our Commonwealth which is created for them. So they are in charge of the ports, they sit down and collect rents. So we don’t improve on the ports. We don’t build new ports.

N35 million is a lot of money because I know many people are hurting in this country. But N35m is not up to what I pay every month for scholarships for indigent students. So it’s not a problem every month. And I have employees who work for me. I have over a thousand employees who work for me. So N35m, yes, I don’t disrespect it, is a lot of money but it’s not money that I will do a sign of the cross before I spend because I pay the salary of my workers.

You didn’t need supporters to come up with the money. You actually paid for that out of your pocket?

No, no, no, not at all. I paid for that from my pocket and I paid for so many other things out of my pocket. Okay. So if you look at the taxes, every year in my State, I get the taxpayer of the year award. And the Governor of my state is of APC. He’s not from my party but every year, including this year I get the taxpayer of the year and the NYSC, which is owned by the APC- led government, gives me Employer of the year. So you can accuse me of not having been advertising myself but it’s not my job to advertise myself. It is the job of the journalists to look for community developers. If a person is hiring over 1000 workers for the past 15 years, it is the job of the journalists to find the person. Okay. If I practice law up to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, I have practiced law in the Supreme Court of the United States, I practiced in New York, I practiced law in California, I practiced all over the world and I am one of the rated arbitrators. I have been a fellow arbitrator since I was in my twenties. If all of that is for the people who are in the media to search and criticize all of that. And if you Google my name, you will not have to struggle to know who I am.

The party you are using does not control even a State in Nigeria. How are you sure that N35m investment in this project isn’t a waste?

I understand N35m cannot make you a President with other people. So, N35m is not an investment. Investment is the belief the people have. The rest is in the hands of the voters. The way our republic is fashioned is that you come out in public to state your belief, you don’t wedge on which party should I join or if they are bad people or if their policies are not good, where can I win? No, you go out and say we have a new perspective to the problem of the country. Can be the platform of fellow citizens so that we can share ideas first, then, when we share advice, can we now formulate a platform that we can present to the people? It is now left for the people to see that the platform is credible. Okay. If you are going to vote, there is no law that says you cannot vote for a party that is new. In a state like Ekiti, for example, SDP is the leading party there.

So you can see that at any point in time Nigerians just have to open their minds to one thing that lets us allow for fresh ideas and let us see whether this person can actually run a government. One of the ways you can know if a person can run the government is that you allow them to run a party and run a campaign. So watch us as we run our campaign, we have a nine months period to make our case to the public. So, by Christmas time, by January, you will now know whether we have explained to you why you can put your faith in our offer because what we are trying to tell you is that there are alternatives. I’m tired of people saying we don’t have alternatives if you ask people, why don’t you vote? I don’t have an alternative, I can’t vote for this. I can’t vote for that. So, now, we give you the alternative. At the end of it, you will now decide whether the alternative is viable or not. But we have enough time.

  • APC coalition urges Buhari to respect alliance with Southwest

APC coalition urges Buhari to respect alliance with Southwest

A coalition within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Southwest, APC South West, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to allow an aspirant from Southwest succeeds him next year.

According to the coalition, there’s an unwritten agreement with Southwest leaders prior to his election in 2015.

A statement by the group’s National Convener , Mr. Fatai Bola Adekunle in Lagos, stated that Buhari was morally bound to ensure that a member from the Southwest succeeds him next year.

Adekunle maintained that anything short of the demand would amount to a betrayal.

“We are appealing to President Muhammadu Buhari to reciprocate the gesture of the people of the Southwest towards him in 2015 by making sure that one of our sons succeed him next year.

“All of us are living witnesses to the roles played by our sons and daughters to the emergence of Buhari as the president . It is no gain saying the fact that without that alliance between the Southwest and the North, the Buhari presidency that we have today would not have been possible.

“The political watershed occurred at a time that President Buhari himself had lost hope of becoming the President”.

The group urged the president to call his men who are clandestinely working against Southwest candidates to order.

He added that some elements within the party and government quarters are working hard to deny the region the opportunity to produce Buhari’s successor, saying such would amount to a grave betrayal of the Yoruba people.

“We are aware that some people within the APC and corridor of power are working very hard and clandestinely against leading Southwest aspirants. This to us will amount to betrayal which our people frown seriously against. We have had people who betrayed us in the past and we are aware of what we did to traitors in our land,” the group said.

It cautioned the leaders on the rumour attempt of breaching the nation’s and party’s constitution to foist former President Goodluck Jonathan as candidate on the party.

He stated that it would be difficult for members to campaign for a candidate that they vigorously worked against in 2015, adding that “Nigerians would see us as unserious and unstable.”

Describing Jonathan as an outsider in the ruling APC, Adekunle stated that while not denying the Bayelsa-born politician his right to exercise his legal right to aspire to any office of his choice and fancy, it would be morally wrong for the party to contemplate fielding him as its flag bearer next year.

“Ordinarily, no one will begrudge anyone who desires to exercise his divine and constitutionally given rights to aspire to any political office of his or her choice but actions they say generate reactions and this is what the (Jonathan’s) rumoured bid has generated.

The group accused elements within the APC for rooting for Jonathan’s saying, “Jonathan was so vilified and hounded during the 2014/2015 period of electioneering by us as the then opposition now ruling party.

“The moral burden now is what will APC tell Nigerians that the product that we described as bad and injurious to the nation has now suddenly become a ‘good one. Nigerians are no fools.”

The coalition also accused the management of the party as been insensitive to the feelings of loyal and patriotic members who would now be deprived of the opportunity to reap the benefits of the membership by vying for a political office but which privilege is now being given to an outsider on a platter of gold..

Lagos council chair accused of non-performance

Residents of Egbe-Idimu Local Council Development Area (LCDA) have accused the council chairman, Kunle Olowoopejo, of non-performance.

According to them, the only visible projects in the area were those done by the former chairman.

They called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to call Olowoopejo to order, warning that his non-performance may deny the All Progressives Congress (APC) votes in the commnities come 2023.

A house owner on Seun Nwachi Avenue, who pleaded for anonymity, lamented that the road, which is the major by-road that connects Isheri to Ikotun, has become impassable.

He said: “If not attended to soon, the road will cut into two. This road is perhaps the most important road in Egbe/Idimu because it helps motorists avoid the usual council roundabout traffic which stretches backwards to Idimu. The traffic forces motorists to detour into Seun Nwachi Avenue road to link Council, Nobex or Subol Bus Stops for onward journey to Ikotun.

“This road started dilapidating early last year and we called the chairman’s attention to it but he has refused to act till now.

“Imesan, Erinfolami and Anuoluwapo streets have remained untouched for years. He started constructing AbdulSalau but left it halfway at Powerline. Last year some people poured sharp sand and gravel there and that was all. Nothing else has been done since then.”

A youth at Adeleke Street said they have made many attempts to see Olowoopejo but all failed. “The chairman is not ready to see anybody or do anything so we have resorted to filling the bad spots with sand so we don’t keep visiting the mechanic every week. But we need the chairman to intervene on this road and others that need attention. That is what we voted him to do, not just to sit in office and form fine boy.

“His mates are building schools, construction roads, and even health centres, what has Olowoopejo done for us since becoming chairman of Egbe/Idimu council?”

A motorist, Saliu Akande, also joined in the pleas for the roads to be reconstructed. “I drive though Seun Nwachi/Adeleke Streets regularly, especially when Council roundabout is blocked. And the residents don’t stop up from passing, so we beg the chairman and everyone concerned to repair this road. It is a major by-road that eases the stress of our journey,” he said.
