    Sanwo-Olu gives N200m interest-free loan to filmmakers

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has presented N200 million cheques to 37 beneficiaries of a special interest-free loan to filmmakers, under the State’s Creative Initiative (LACI), an initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture.

The governor said a nine-man committee comprising veteran filmmakers and some senior government officials headed by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Uzamat Akinbile-Yusuf, was set up last year with the mandate of identifying struggling filmmakers, who could be empowered with grants and seed fund for film production.

Represented by Mrs. Akinbile-Yusuf, a pharmacist, during the presentation of the cheques to filmmakers at Glover Memorial Hall, Lagos Island, Sanwo-Olu said the aim of the initiative was to address financial challenges that inhibited quality film production in Lagos and Nigeria.

He advised the beneficiaries to make use of the loan and pay back at the stipulated time, to enable others be empowered.

Mrs. Akinbile-Yusuf, giving her opening remarks, said before the establishment of the revolving loan for filmmakers, the governor had made interventions aimed at ameliorating the devastating effect of the COVID-19 pandemic since the index case was reported in the country two years ago on business owners in the hospitality, entertainment and tourism sector.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture,  Mrs. Oyinade Nathan-Marsh, hailed Sanwo-Olu’s doggedness in transforming the entertainment and tourism sector, as well as keeping his electoral promises.

A veteran filmmaker and director, Mr. Adebayo Salami, popularly called Oga Bello, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, praised the state government and promised that they would utilise the fund and repay in time.

  • Omisore’s emergence will retire some politicians, says Oyetola

Omisore’s emergence will retire some politicians, says Oyetola

Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola has said the emergence of Senator Iyiola Omisore as the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will force some politicians in the state to abandon politics.

He spoke yesterday at Nelson Mandela Freedom Park, Osogbo at a reception organised by the state government and APC to celebrate Omisore’s emergence as the national secretary of the party.

Oyetola said: “When I was a member of the National Caretaker Committee of the party, some politicians in the state were afraid of me. Now that Iyiola Omisore has emerged as the party’s national secretary, some of them will abandon politics.

“Omisore is not just in charge of the secretariat, but also a member of the National Working Committee of the party. This is the first time a politician from Osun will be getting such responsibility, apart from just being given party ex-officio.

“Osun State and Southwest now have a big stake in the party. I urge you all to start the task of my re-election in earnest. Let us work toward getting 450,000 votes to win the governorship election landslide.”

The state Chairman of APC, Prince Gboyega Famodun, said: “Some people in our party calling themselves ‘progressives’ positioned themselves as opposition. They acted as if they are greater than our party. The emergence of Omisore has shut them off and we will lay them finally to rest with the victory of Oyetola on July 16.”

Senator Omisore said: “My emergence as the national secretary of the All Progressives Congress portends greatness, victory for Osun in all elections. You know that Osun is an APC state, so we are overwhelmed by this privileged to serve as the national secretary of APC.”

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has urged Sen. Omisore on progress and development of Ile-Ife Kingdom.

He spoke yesterday in Ile-Ife when the APC national secretary led notable politicians and supporters on a visit to his palace.

The monarch appreciated God for remembering Ile-Ife for good things, especially elevating an Ile-Ife son to the status of the national secretary of the ruling party.

He appealed to Omisore to embrace his friends and enemies now that he had attained the position, noting that such a position would pave the way for him to attain greater levels in life.

Oba Ogunwusi urged him to use all in his capacity to serve Ile-Ife, Osun State and Nigeria at large.

Omisore, a former deputy governor in Osun State, thanked God for making the day a reality.

He hailed Ooni for being supportive and for his fatherly role, saying it showed the Ooni was a chosen royal father from the Almighty.

Omisore hailed the efforts of President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Oyetola, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Osun State Governor Bisi Akande and other Southwest governors, saying their contributions to governance could not be over-emphasised.

Olubadan urges farmers to check food scarcity

Farmers across Oyo State were yesterday urged to check food scarcity by improving on their outputs and curbing the activities of middle men by bringing their produce to the markets directly.

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun, gave the advice while hosting the congregation of Baale Agbe from 11 local governments in Ibadanland, under the auspices of Baale Agbe-in-Council, Oyo State, at his Alarere home.

The monarch, who promised to offer assistance to the farmers towards making food sufficient for the populace, said the farmers should be concerned about the hardship being faced by the people owing to food scarcity.

“I plead with you to be conscious of your critical role in the society as the vital segment of the populace that sustains the living of all, or for how many days can somebody live without food? Even, when people go on fasting, they still rely on food to break at the appropriate time.

“Let’s seek ways by which our farm produce reach the end users (consumers) directly so as to reduce the activities of the middlemen, who unduly hike prices for their selfish gains. By this, people’s hardship at this critical time will be reduced,” Olubadan said.

Otun Baale Agbe of Oyo State, Chief Kadri Akanbi, who read the speech of the council on behalf of Baale Agbe of the state, Chief Jacob Omolewu, said the purpose of the visit was to congratulate Olubadan and solicit the support and cooperation of the palace.

Promising to support Olubadan in the promotion of agro-based industries in Ibadanland and Oyo State in general, the member of Baale Agbe-in-Council also sought the support of Olubadan-in-Council to mobilise Ibadan indigenes who have the financial muscle to support agriculture development in Ibadanland.

  • Abiru leads debate on Franchise Regulation Bill

Abiru leads debate on Franchise Regulation Bill

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Industries and the senator representing Lagos East, Adetokunbo Abiru, yesterday on the floor of the Senate led a debate on the Franchise Regulation Bill, 2022.

It seeks to create a framework for franchise system and guide the relationship between franchisors and franchisees in Nigeria.

The debate came barely a week after the Senate passed a Bill for An Act To Repeal The Copyright Act C28 LFN 2004 And To Re-enact The Copyright Act 2021, which was partly sponsored by Senator Abiru.

In his argument, Abiru averred that it was imperative for the nation to have statute that would regulate the franchise system in the country, in accordance with global best practices.

He said: “As part of our efforts to enhance economic development of our great nation, I hereby propose the passage of this Franchise Bill, which basically seeks to create a framework for the regulation of franchising and to guide the relationship between Franchisors and Franchisees and for Related Matters.’’  Abiru said: “Laws enacted by this hallowed Chamber must therefore be directed towards ensuring: the promotion of a planned and balanced economic development; and the material resources of the nation are harnessed and distributed as best as possible to serve the common good”.

The senator, a seasoned financial expert and retired bank chief executive, listed many foreign and local companies that are exploring enormous opportunities for business expansion and growth through franchising.

According, to him, there is need to have a legislation to regulate Franchise as a business model in the wake of growing frustration of Franchisees.

He said: “Today, there is no single statute that regulates franchising or guides the relationship between franchisors and franchisees. Although there are a number of countries that do not have any single statute on franchising, the trend today is that there is a growing need to protect and stimulate the franchising model through legislation. Franchise laws have been passed in Malaysia, Canadian regions, states in the United States of America and 78 other countries to mention a few.

‘’My findings suggest that local and foreign franchisors have abused their positions by insisting on terms that have whittled down the franchise model and led to the closure of several franchises.

‘’Several gaps that can be breached through this Bill have been identified. Let us take a Pizza franchise for example – a business man is the franchisor of a foreign Pizza and he licenses me as his franchisee. The typical arrangement may be that for each Pizza sold, I pay the franchisor, N5 (Five Naira). If I develop a new menu called DODO Pizza, which becomes popular such that other franchisees adopt it, should the franchisor, collect N5 (Five Naira) for my new menu from me and other franchisees without sharing this with me? Today, the absence of regulation by way of statute has left many franchisees in the cold.  This Bill sets out to ameliorate this.”

Co-sponsors of the bill are:  Senator Abdullahi Sabi, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele and Senator Saidu Alkali.

  • Lagos to begin issuance of driver’s licence soon, says commissioner

Lagos to begin issuance of driver’s licence soon, says commissioner

Lagos State Government may begin the issuance of driver’s licence soon, the Commissioner for Transportation Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, said yesterday.

Speaking during his first interactive session with reporters, held at the ministry’s boardroom, the commissioner said the new licence was the outcome of years of engagement between the state government and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

He said: “As part of what we have been doing since we assumed office, we can disclose that soon, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will launch the new driver’s licence, signalling that the state is on for a new deal of transportation reforms.”

Oladeinde, accompanied by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Kamaldeen Olowosago, and other top management officers, said a reviewed Lagos State Transportation Policy was ready and might be unveiled by the governor next month.

The commissioner, who did not disclose whether the unveiling would be part of the activities slated for the commemoration of the third year anniversary of the administration, said the policy, which was submitted to its predecessor shortly before the government came on board, had to undergo review, as it was found not robust enough to capture the state’s Strategic Transportation Master plan (STEM).

He said the state, with over two million vehicles, accounted for above national average of vehicles per kilometre, a development which made managing transportation in the state a bit complex and required deliberate planning.

Oladeinde said the Sanwo-Olu administration was determined to reform the transportation sector and ensure that small passenger vehicles, (popularly called danfos), were taken off the road and replaced by more comfortable and affordable mass transit buses that could take in more passengers.

Speaking about the menace of okada and tricycles, which seemed to have continued to defy government’s enforcement, the commissioner said the government had been holding back on full enforcement because of its determination to provide alternative means of commuting for the residents.

“If the government decides to embark on full enforcement of the law, the state will be thrown into crisis because a lot of people still rely on these modes of transportation as a means of movement, but by the time we are able to provide better alternatives, it will be easy to clamp down on these operators,” he said.

Oladeinde, however, gave a clue that when the time comes; the government may go for total ban of Okada and tricycle operation, rather than the partial ban that currently obtains.

He said the Lagos Ride Taxis, First and Last Mile (FLM) buses, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses, ongoing massive reforms of the waterways, as well as construction of the Blue and Red Rail lines, scheduled to be delivered before the end of the year, were geared toward providing comfortable transportation alternatives for Lagosians.

The commissioner, who admitted the proliferation of bad eggs in the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) and the Abandoned Vehicles Agency (LSAVA), said the government would not relent in welding the big stick against any officer caught extorting the people, adding that while punitive actions would continue to be taken against erring officers, efforts would continue in deploying technology for full enforcement of traffic regulations.

On junction improvements, Oladeinde said the ministry had completed junction work improvements on 10 major junctions and completed traffic signalisation in 20 other junctions that had never had signal lights.

He said the ministry was determined to deliver the 60 junctions identified by his men when the administration took off in 2019, adding that “when this is done, Lagosians will experience reduction in gridlock.”

  • Fayemi doles out N360m to 24 communities

Fayemi doles out N360m to 24 communities

Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi yesterday distributed cheques worth N360 million to 24 communities , as part of efforts to cushion the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on the poor and vulnerable as well as ensure reduction of poverty to the barest minimum.

Dr. Fayemi, who presented the cheques to representatives of the communities at the Osuntokun Hall, Government House, Ado-Ekiti, said the fund would focus on three specific result areas: education, health care services, water and sanitation.

The governor said any government able to cover the three critical areas would have gone a long way in reducing poverty to its barest minimum, adding that the fund was in fulfilment of his promise and commitment to ensuring that every community got a taste of the administration’s development agenda.

He said the government was determined to make impact in the lives of the people.

According to the governor, Ekiti State COVID Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (Ekiti CARES) programme was the aftermath of how the state was looking at ways to alleviate the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on the socio-economic well-being of the people and support budgeted government intervention at the state level, targeting existing and newly vulnerable and poor households like farmers, artisans and micro and small scale enterprises affected by the economic crises occasioned by the pandemic.

He said it was important to continue to invest in the people by promoting local ownership of projects, adding that when the people were allowed to build their own projects, they tended to also protect them because they saw them as their own projects rather than government projects.

Fayemi urged all the community project management committees to be more active and accountable to their community as well as ensure that sustainable plans were put in place for the use and maintenance of the projects. He enjoined them to be more committed and selfless while discharging their assignments

The Ekiti CARES intervention programme is an extension of the NG CARES, which is an emergency programme aimed at supporting state level efforts to respond to and recover from the COVID-19 induced socio-economic crisis.

The governor said the NG CARES is an emergency intervention designed by the World Bank in collaboration with the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to support states in Nigeria to restore the livelihood of poor and vulnerable households and stabilise micro and small enterprises affected by the pandemic

“The Community Infrastructure Services for communities which have been the key delivery areas of Ekiti State Community and Social Development Agency (EKCSDA) for over 10 years, has completed all the processes of facilitating 24 Communities/Group Development Projects amounting to about Three Hundred and Sixty Million Naira (#360,000,000) for the provision of infrastructural facilities in three result areas of education, health care services; water and sanitation.

“This was made possible as a result of Five Hundred and Fifty Million Naira (#550,000,000), which was released in November last year by our administration as an advance to kick start the programme in Ekiti State, which is why Ekiti is the only state as of today to achieve that feat out of the 36 states of the federation. This is not by happenstance but in fulfilment of our promise and commitment to ensuring that every community in Ekiti State has a taste of our developmental agenda.”

Projects to be implemented by these communities include construction/ renovation of basic health centres, blocks of classrooms and provision of water from motorised boreholes, among others.

The event was attended by the Deputy Speaker, Hakeem Jamiu; Acting Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Foluso Daramola; Head of Service, Mrs. Peju Babafemi; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Biodun Omoleye; Chairman, Board of EKCSDA, Chief Biodun Akin-Fasae and traditional rulers of the benefiting communities, among other dignitaries.

  • United States-based pastor joins Reps race

United States-based pastor joins Reps race

A pastor in the United States of America, Afolami Abdul Olabomi, has said his decision to contest the National Assembly election, to represent Akoko Northeast/Akoko Northwest Federal Constituency, is to change people’s  lives.

Olabomi, who has spent over 20 years in the United States, said his joining politics was an extension of his call as a minister of God and based on the plight of the people.

He spoke while submitting his expression of interest and nomination forms at the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) secretariat in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

Olabomi said: “I have been in the United States for over 20 years and I have seen the way politics is being practised in advanced countries. It is different from what we have been experiencing here in Nigeria.

“Each time I return home and see my people wallowing in abject poverty, I am worried. I have been praying to God to give me the grace to be able to be there for my people. I see this coming election as an opportunity for me to serve my community and give back to them, the dividends of democracy.

“Many things are affecting my people, especially youths. Most of them are university graduates, but there is no job for them.

“I have spent most of my years developing the youth. I have been running youths’ development programmes, picking homeless children off the streets. If I can do this in America where there is government, I should be able to do more here where the people depend on God for good life.

“I am going to focus on the youth, train and retrain them to make sure they are independent.”

“I will also take good care of the aged because most of them work and have nothing to take home.

“I am very optimistic because I have been praying to God over the years that He should give me the grace to be there for my people. When this opportunity came, I sought the face of God and He gave me the go-ahead. He is right behind me. I am just in the race.

“This is a mandate I am going to claim for my people in 2023, with the support of my people in the federal constituency.”

  • Lagos to curb accidents, bullying in schools

Lagos to curb accidents, bullying in schools

Lagos State is taking proactive measures to ensure schools are safe from accidents and bullying, it was learnt yesterday.

The government also promised to increase awareness towards infusing and inculcating safety culture and compliance among pupils.

This was reiterated at a workshop organised by the Lagos Safety Commission (LSC), Office of Education Quality Assurance, in collaboration with School Run Academy. The theme was ‘Creating A Safety Culture and Compliance’.

Commissioner for Education Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo said the move was part of plans to prevent a recurrence of the December 2021 accident at Babs Fafunwa Millennium School, Ojodu, which claimed about 17 lives.

Adefisayo, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary Mr. Abayomi Abolaji, said the government is already identifying schools, especially those close the highway, and are prone to road accidents, to ensure the needful is done to prevent a recurrence.

The commissioner said speed breakers and traffic lights would be installed in front of such schools, while officers of safety/security agencies would be engaged to ameliorate the situation.

Director-General of the LSC Lanre Mojola explained that the Safe School Initiative is to ensure schools across the state are safe and the environment conducive for pupils to learn.

Mojola stressed that safety measures are very important to ensure physical safety, disease control, discourage bullying and alcohol abuse, as well as training the school owners on how to ensure schools are safer.

He added: “Safer schools produce safer children and safer children are the bedrock of the future. So what we shall be doing is to meet school operators and engage them on how we can make safety the fulcrum of the curriculum within the schools.

“We want to ensure our teachers teach the basic principles of safety and that our children interact in a safe environment.

Safety begins with us, and zero accident is possible if we all work together in a safe environment.”

Mojola added that the workshop centered on owners of boarding schools in Lagos State while the gesture would be extended to other stakeholders soon.
