  • APC crisis may affect its fortune in 2023, say Kwara ward, council chairmen

APC crisis may affect its fortune in 2023, say Kwara ward, council chairmen

All Progressives Congress (APC) youths, ward, and local government chairmen in Kwara state have lamented that the ongoing crisis in the party portends grave danger for the fortune of the party in 2023 and subsequent elections in the state.

The stakeholders added that the war of attrition rocking the party is also capable of leading to mass defection of members to other parties in the state.

They therefore urged the leadership of APC in the state and Abuja to urgently intervene and salvage the situation.

Representatives of the ward, local government chairmen and youths Abdulrasheed Abdulrauf; Muyideen Shittu and Yinka Raji made the pleas in Ilorin, the state capital at a prayer session for the party ahead of 2023.

The party also used the occasion to pray for President Muhammadu Buhari in choosing the right and credible person as his successor in 2023.

Speaking on behalf of the ward chairmen, Abdulrauf said that “ I am delighted to present to you our elders and critical stakeholders our position, after carefully studying the situations in our party. We observe that since our party won the 2019 general elections in the state, there has been no peace in the party, following the desire of Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to divide the party, which he successfully achieved by forming and funding a group called ‘AA”.

“This we believe was not in the best interest of the party and not in line with the party’s constitution.

“We have lodged complaints several times with our various Local gvernment party Chairmen, our senatorial chairmen as well as taking the complaints to the state chairman of the party against this illegality by the governor who is supposed to be the leader of the party.

“Despite our complaints, nothing has changed in the last 3 years.

Therefore, we, the entire ward chairmen of the party in the state have met and resolved to call on the state chairman and our leaders to note that our teeming members and supporters at the grassroots are becoming restless, more so when election year is fast approaching.

“In conclusion, the house is falling and we hereby appeal to our Local Government and state leadership to take urgent measures to retain our members at the grassroots, otherwise, the horse will bolt out of the stable.”

Corroborating the above, Mr. Shittu said that all the 16 local government chairmen “hereby acknowledge that the complaints lodged by the ward chairmen were not limited to their level alone, we Chairmen also suffer the same fate at our different local levels and we also registered same complaints with the state chairman without results so far.’’

He said: “Former Lagos Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola has done that for the association and we didn’t disappoint him through Union Bank and First Bank to the tune of N1 billion, we, therefore, call on the present Governor to come to our aid also.’’

He added that several letters have been written to His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu to do everything within his capacity to ensure that the Lagos Taxi should not go into extinction by giving undue advantage to the unregistered cabs otherwise known as Kabukabu because they are security risks to the state.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Friday promised students of the newly established Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, that he would make the institution bigger and the best choice in Nigeria.

According to a statement released by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile,  Sanwo-Olu, who had a stopover at the Ikorodu campus of the University, while on his way to the commissioning of the new plant of Kimberly-Clark Factory in Odonguyan area, also assured the students that he would work towards reducing the institution’s school fees.

He said: “Great students of Lagos State University of Science and Technology. You are now university students; it is going to work well. We’d continue to do what we’re doing to ensure that you finish well. JAMB has put your name (Lagos State University of Science and Technology) as a full university.

”We know you have a small concern about your school fees, we are going to look at it and we are going to bring it down. We are going to be building this university that would be bigger than even LASU very soon,” Governor Sanwo-Olu assured.

It would be recalled that the National Universities Commission (NUC) Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed on February 8 handed over certificates for two new Lagos universities – Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUST) to Governor Sanwo-Olu at the commission’s headquarters in Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Abuja.

With the issuance of clearance certificates of operation by NUC, Lagos State University of Education is now the 56th state university and 204th University in Nigeria, as well as the second University of education in Nigeria while Lagos State University of Science and Technology is 57th state university and 205th university in Nigeria.

The two universities are in addition to the existing Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, established in 1982 by the first Civilian Governor of Lagos, the late Alhaji Lateef Jakande. Lagos State now has three state-owned universities.

365,088 voters to decide Akure bye-election

A total of 365,088 eligible voters are expected to troop out to vote in today’s by-election in Akure North/Akure South Federal constituency seat.

The ruling All Progressives’  Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) are major contenders for the seat even though seven political parties fielded candidates for the election.

It was the PDP that won the seat in the 2019 general elections and won again in the 2020 governorship election.

Candidates in the election are Olawale Oyemakinde for Accord Party, Fadeke Felicia for African Democratic Party, Alade Mayorkun for the APC, Joseph Ajayi for the All Peoples Party, Johnson Oluwasuyi for the National Redemption Movement, Olumuyiwa Adu for the People’s Democratic Party, and Opawole Tajudeen for the Social Democratic Party.

Only candidates of the PDP, Olumiyuwa Adu, and that of the APC, Lawson Mayorkun Alade were seen carrying out rigorous campaigns in both local government areas.

Already, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has distributed sensitive materials to the 408 polling units.

Ondo Resident Electoral Commissioner, Rufus Akeju, had told journalists that new eligible voters who got registered in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration in June 2021 till date would not be able to vote in today’s by-election because data from the exercise has not been aggregated.

Akeju assured that he would not conduct an inconclusive by-election. He said the replacement result sheet would be used on condition that all participating political parties consented to it.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said it has deployed 500 personnel for the election while a spokesman for the Ondo Police Command, DSP Fumilayo Odunlami, said adequate personnel have been deployed for the poll.

Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu who spoke through his Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Donald Ojogo, announced restriction of all vehicular and human movements from 12 midnight of Friday to 5 pm of Saturday, February 26, within the affected electoral jurisdiction.

This measure, according to the Governor, was to ensure a violence-free election and for purposes of achieving an electoral process devoid of infractions and breaches in the Akure North/South Federal Constituency by-election.

He said all adjoining routes leading to the Federal Constituency from areas outside the prescribed jurisdiction for the purpose of the election were equally closed to vehicular movements.

“Within these prescribed periods, only vehicles and personnel on electoral duties,  essential assignments as well as emergency medical movements are exempted from this restriction order.”

  • Scores protest delay in trial of Offa robbery suspects

Scores protest delay in trial of Offa robbery suspects

Scores of people yesterday protested against what they called the delay in the trial of suspects arrested over April 5th, 2018 bloody bank robbery in Offa area of Kwara state.

No fewer than 33 persons including nine policemen were killed in the robbery.

The robbers also attacked five banks and carted away million of Naira.

    Five persons Ayoade Akinnibosun; Ibikunle Ogunleye; Adeola Abraham;

Azeez Salawu and Niyi Ogundiran suspected of complicity in the robbery have since been standing trial before Justice Haleema Salman of the state High Court, Ilorin.

The protesters were at the Government House, Ilorin to urge the Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq to expedite action on the trial of the suspects with a view to serving the victims and their relations with justice.

Some of the protesters wielded placards with inscriptions: ‘“ Governor Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq, don’t fold your hands,’ ‘ expedite action on the trial of Offa robbery suspects,’ ‘we need justice on Offa robbery incident,’ ‘The blood of Offa 33 victims is crying.’’

Assuaging the fears of the protesters, Attorney General and Justice Commissioner Salman Jawondo assured that the case would not be swept under the carpet.

Jawondo said: “You have come in respect of April 2018 Offa robbery where at least 33 persons were killed by the armed robbers. Since then the government has not forgotten about the case. We are doing everything that is allowed within the law to make sure we put our case across to court and justice is done.

“The government has called eleven witnesses in proof of the case and some of the witnesses include bankers who were at the scene of the crime including the recorded footage of the closed circuit television (CCTV) of the robbery.

The footage had shown how the robbery was being committed as well as facts and figures of the money stolen from the banks. We have even tendered certificates of death of those killed including the policemen. It is the wheel of justice that grinds slowly but can be very devastating when its result comes out.

“I want to assure that government will not allow the case to go under.

Yes, I can understand your anxiety and fear, that a particular individual had one time told the whole world that nothing will come out of the case. But that was when they were there. Now that we have a new government led by a responsible and responsive individual, you can be sure that justice will be done.

“The case came up February 21st, 2022 after the government had closed its case, it is now for the defendants to place before the court their defence if any. But it is part of the procedural law that they can raise no-case submission, which they did.

“So we exchanged addresses and the addresses were adopted. The case has now been fixed on April 25th, 2022 for ruling on no case submission.”

  • Runsewe to resolve rift

    Runsewe to resolve rift

THE feud between the Olu of Arepo, Oba Solomon Oyebi, and residents of Journalists’ Estate Phase 1 may be resolved soon, following the intervention of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) Director General, Otunba Segun Runsewe, and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

Runsewe and NUJ President Chris Isiguzo, in a whistle-stop visit to the monarch and the leadership of the Journalists’ Estate Residents Development Association (JERDA) Phase 1, on Wednesday, said it was in the community’s interest that there should be peace.

They urged Oyebi to see himself as a father to all.

Speaking at the Oba’s palace, Runsewe, who described himself as a stakeholder on the estate, said he was in the forefront of the team that bought the land in 2003 when Arepo was still a thick forest that nobody gave it a chance of becoming developed in so short a time.

He said the erection of the arch bearing the name JERDA 1 was for the purpose of identity and not to deprive commuters, motorists and others of the use of the road passing through the place.

‘’Establishing Journalists’ Estate Phases 1 & 11  here in Arepo and identifying them with an arch should be seen as a positive brand identity that can help boost the development of Arepo. We will want to report back to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and the authorities in Abuja that sanctioned this peace initiative that Kabiyesi has acceded to the re-erection of the demolished JERDA 1 arch, as approved by the government,’’ Runsewe said.

He recalled that the government in 2008 reconstructed and named the community’s major road as Journalists’ Estate Road and upgraded Oyebi, who was then Baale to Oba.

The culture chief implored the monarch to broker peace among his subjects and ensure the withdrawal of court cases on the right of passage on the Journalists’ Estate Road, to sustain the ongoing development of Arepo.

‘’Kabiyesi, with the ongoing road construction, you are about to experience more development in your domain and you need journalists to identify and project you rightly. You really do not need bad publicity, which the authorities can frown at,’’ Runsewe said, promising to build a mini-museum at the palace once the matter is resolved.

Isiguzo implored Oyebi to invite all the parties, especially journalists, for talks in the interest of peace in his domain.

He described journalists as essential professionals, who are courted worldwide.

“Across the world, brand identities exist. So, the security of journalists’ lives has become non-negotiable because of the nature of their work. We know that every life matters; as such, we will appeal that you support moves to reconcile all the parties and secure lives, particularly those of journalists in your domain,’’ Isiguzo said.

He said the Arepo crisis might affect plans to have other journalists’ estates in Nasarawa, Bauchi and Oyo, among other states, if not quickly resolved.

Oyebi pledged to work on resolving the crisis soon by convening, first, a meeting of his chiefs, and then, of the feuding parties.

He said he was aware of the power of the press, noting that in the past few weeks, his attention had been drawn to reports on the matter, in the print, broadcast and social media.

Earlier, JERDA 1 Chairperson Mrs. Funke Fadugba, who received the Runsewe delegation at the estate’s civic centre, gave a rundown of how the crisis began. She said the estate got the government’s approval to re-erect the arch, which was pulled down during the ongoing road construction.

The estate, she said, believed in communal living and as such, would never do anything to ‘’deprive others of their right to use the road, while they too should recognise our right to secure our estate.’’
