  • My govt is building roads to meet needs, says Sanwo-Olu

My govt is building roads to meet needs, says Sanwo-Olu

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said yesterday that his administration was running an inclusive infrastructure development and building rural and urban roads to meet needs.

He spoke at the inauguration of upgraded/rehabilitated network of three roads, namely Adeola Hopewell Street, Idowu Taylor and AfriBank/Church Gate Streets on Victoria Island.

The governor said Victoria Island used to be one of the cleanest and most orderly  neighborhoods, but increased commercial activities and population upsurge led to environmental challenges, including flooding and gridlock.

“The failure of many of the drainages and water channels on Victoria  Island has impeded the free flow of traffic, extending  commuting time, causing damage to vehicles, lowpatronage for  businesses and generally poorer quality of life for the people who work and live here.

“As a responsive government committed to the fulfilment of electoral promises, we knew we had to do everything necessary to address and reverse this issue of incessant flooding and all its

consequences in the area,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu said the reconstruction would boost commerce, interconnectivity and curb gridlock and flooding on the network of roads, which served over 200,000 people daily on the axis that housed financial institutions.

He said the inauguration was to fulfil his campaign promises of inclusive infrastructure delivery, address degeneration and the perennial flooding on the axis in line with his T.H.E.M.E.S Development Agenda.

“A major focus of our Greater Lagos Vision is the prioritisation of urban renewal and the development of road infrastructure as a means of enhancing the collective well-being of Lagosians.

“We have adopted an all-inclusive and people-centred approach that covers rural and urban areas, so that no part of Lagos State is left out,” the governor said.

He listed all divisions of the state where roads projects were ongoing, noting that four roads in Ikeja GRA axis are at advanced stages of completion and will soon be inaugurated.

Sanwo-Olu said the upgrade of Adeola Hopewell, Idowu Taylor and Afribank/Churchgate streets project, awarded in February 2020, has provided effective drainage system and network, as well as good road connectivity.

“Of the three roads being inaugurated today, Adeola Hopewell and Afribank/Churchgate streets are one-way traffic roads, while Idowu Taylor is a two-way street.

“The three roads form a ring-road like pattern that effectively discharges traffic into Sanusi Fafunwa Street and connects back to Adeyemo Alakija Street,” he said.

The Special Adviser on Works and Infrastructure, Mrs. Aramide Adeyoye, said prior to the reconstruction, the strategic roads were in deplorable conditions.

She said the project was part of the Phase 1 of the Urban Regeneration programme of the Sanwo-Olu government for the Victoria Island axis, while listing recently completed roads on the axis.

The Chairman, Victoria Island and Ikoyi Residents Association, Mrs. Wonu Folami, joined other notable leaders and influential politicians from the area to thank the Sanwo-Olu administration for the succour the project brought, while pledging support of the residents to the government.

Bamidele receives N22.5m cheque to buy governorship form

A group of professionals under the umbrella of Ekiti Concerned Professionals yesterday presented a cheque of N22.5 million to Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele (APC-Ekiti) ahead of the governorship election.

The group, led by its Chairman, Mr. Lekan Ajisafe, made the presentation at the National Assembly’s office of the senator in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed the governorship election in Ekiti for June 18, 2022.

Ajisafe said the amount was raised within a week among Ekiti professionals from home and abroad would cover cost of nomination and expression of interest forms to be purchased by the lawmaker, who is aspiring to the office of governor of his state.

He described Bamidele, who is the Chairman of the Southern Senators’ Forum as “a tested hand” who they are confident would move the state forward considering his track record of experiences in legislative, judiciary and executive arms of government.

He said that “Bamidele is a tested hand and who is capable of turning the state for better considering his experiences in governance. We believe it is high time Ekiti presented its best product and also put its best foot forward.”

“We have looked at this gubernatorial contest that is coming, we don’t want an unpopular candidate, we don’t want anyone who will come and rule the state by trying and experimenting. So, we want a tested hand. We want a trusted and experienced hand.

“That is why we all put our resources together to raise this cheque for him to buy this nomination and expression of interest forms ahead of the Ekiti governorship election.

“To show you that we really want him to run, we don’t want you to use your money to purchase the forms. We raised this money in less than a week. This is our mark of support to you.”

Bamidele in his remark appreciated the gesture, describing it as an impetus  to his desire to serve the people of Ekiti.

“This means so much to me, it is one to want to serve the people, it is another thing also to feel appreciated that people who really matter want to give you encouragement. God knows that this is a lot of impetus to my own desire to serve the people and government of Ekiti.

“I am particularly interested in the fact that all of you who are making the presentation to me today are core professionals from Ekiti, you are not politicians. Even though I still need the support of politicians when it comes to campaign and winning election.

“For you to have decided on your own to make this wonderful contribution, shows that you want Ekiti that will work and by the grace of God, I will do my best if given an opportunity to serve,” he said.

Also a member of the group, Mr Gboyega Oloniyo said that “we believe in the course, we believe in him and we know that what he is going for is a noble thing.

“He is an achiever. He will change the narrative by collectively reworking the value system by checking the menace of corruption.

“The presentation of the cheque to him is a statement of solidarity that we are right behind him and we want to see him through this journey to huge success.” (NAN) (www.nannews.ng)

Ogun State Government has embarked on ‘Let there be Light’ project aimed at installing and activating street lights in major towns, to prevent road crashes, especially at nights and armed robberies.

Governor Dapo Abiodun disclosed this at the weekend at a test run of the project on the 42km Sagamu Interchange-Siun-Abeokuta express road.

He said the project will ensure that street lights are provided in major towns and cities.

Abiodun noted that the project would prevent accidents and discourage robberies, among other benefits.

He said his government would not relent in delivering dividends of democracy to the people, adding that “a replica of what obtains on the Sagamu-Siun-Abeokuta expressway will be seen all over the state.”

Speaking earlier after inspecting the 526 housing units at Kobape, the governor said construction of housing projects across the state is part of his administration’s economic sustainability plan to create job opportunities for artisans and open up the economy of the state.

He said Kobape Housing Scheme was a deliberate urban renewal strategy aimed at stemming rural-urban migration.

”We are going round to see our legacy projects that define our administration. This housing project has turned Kobape from a rural area to a township. The housing project is part of our urban renewal strategy to attract people from the cities to the hinterland.

“This project is one of the many we have done in places such as Idi-Aba in Abeokuta, Sagamu, Ijebu-Ode, Ilaro and Ota. So far, we have done about 1,000 housing units for the low and middle income earners. It is a commitment to our vision to cater for all categories of people. This project will be inaugurated with others such as the Epe-Ijebu-Ode, Abeokuta- Sagamu roads,” Abiodun said.

On the renovation of the June 12 Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta, the governor said: “Such a monument, which offers space for official functions, should not be allowed to deteriorate.

“Our administration is particular about promoting our culture and June 12 Cultural Centre is part of it. The state of the centre left much to be desired and we had to do something urgently about it, as it offered us a place for many functions of the government. It has a museum, cinema, spacious halls and other facilities. We have renovated it and it is now a place to behold.”

He said his administration had done much in promoting Adire fabrics and its value chain to create job opportunities, adding that the creation of Adire portal was to enable people buy the fabric anywhere in the world.

  • ‘Oyo APC will come out stronger from current crisis’

‘Oyo APC will come out stronger from current crisis’

Oyo South senatorial aspirant, Kolapo Kola- Daisi, has enjoined stalwarts and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Oyo State not to lose hope, as the party will come out stronger from its current crisis.

He said this while addressing party leaders and elders in Ibarapa zone during his visit to the zone at the weekend.

Oyo State APC is still embroiled in leadership crisis as a result of the non- acceptability of the state congress by majority of party leaders and members, citing usage of doctored delegates list in the conduct of the congress organised to elect new exco to run the affairs of the party in the state.

The senatorial aspirant, who is married to the first daughter of former two-term governor of Oyo State, the late Senator Abiola Ajimobi, said he decided to join the senatorial race with a view to further give to the society the way his father,  the popular industrialist, Chief Kola Daisi, had done.

“For me, politics is about service to the people.  It is a way of further ensuring development in the society. As an industrialist, my dad contributed in his own way to the society, that is also my aim when I decided to throw my cap into the political ring”, he said.

Kola-Daisi said his visit to the elders and leaders in Ibarapa zone known as G9 was to intimate them and seek their support for his aspiration.

Responding on behalf of the leaders, Pa T. A. Jolaoso spoke highly of Kola-Daisi’s pedigree, and stressed the need to keep informing the entire party structure about his impressive resume, his readiness and plans for Oyo South.

“Your coming here today has proven your omoluabi nature. You have honoured us, and God will honour you too. We are impressed with your experience, and our only advice to you is to keep spreading your impressive statements here today to the entire Oyo South. We are proud of you, your antecedence and  your illustrious pedigree. By the grace of God, you will succeed and your heart desires for our senatorial district will come to pass,” Jolaoso said.

The visit, which had in attendance all  members of the G9, was led by the Director- General of the Kolapo Kola -Daisi Campaign Organisation, Mr Lekan Afuye.
