Tinubu’s fiscal revolution rebuilding Nigeria, says APC

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State says President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s fiscal revolution is rebuilding Nigeria brick and brick.

Spokesman Seye Oladejo in a statement yesterday hailed the visionary leadership and reform-driven approach of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) under Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said: “In a period when nations are being tested by global economic disruptions, Nigeria stands resilient.

“This is not by chance but by deliberate financial engineering driven by sound policy, strategic management and disciplined revenue administration.

“The ongoing transformation of the FIRS is a textbook example of how institutional reforms, when anchored on competence and integrity, can become the engine room of nation building.”

He said FIRS under the leadership of Mr Zacch Adedeji had evolved beyond the traditional role of a tax collector into economic redirection.

Oladejo said the agency had become a strategic fiscal institution balancing revenue generation with economic stimulation.

According to him, through the introduction of digital tax administration platforms, data harmonisation, and enhanced compliance frameworks, FIRS is ensuring every taxable entity contributes fairly and transparently to national development.

“The Renewed Hope administration understands that without strong fiscal foundations, no amount of political goodwill can deliver economic prosperity.

“The modern FIRS is therefore not merely filling government coffers – it is laying the groundwork for sustainable national growth,” he said.

Oladejo said some of the notable innovations transforming Nigeria’s fiscal landscape under the current FIRS leadership remained noteworthy.

He listed such innovations to include the TaxPro Max System, which he said had revolutionised tax filing, remittance and reconciliation – eliminating leakages and human interference.

He said the innovations included the Automated VAT collection mechanisms across key sectors such as telecoms, banking, and e-commerce – ensuring real-time tracking and accountability.

Oladejo said the innovations also included Unified Tax Identification Number (TIN) expansion, promoting a single national database for corporate and individual taxpayers.

According to him, also noteworthy is the strategic inter-agency collaboration between the FIRS, Customs, CAC and NIMC to improve data accuracy and prevent duplication.

He said capacity-building and digital transformation programmes were equally positioning the service as one of Africa’s most technologically advanced tax institutions.

“These initiatives have led to record-breaking revenue collections – with the FIRS crossing unprecedented thresholds that now provide the fiscal muscle for critical infrastructure, social welfare and debt sustainability.

“President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda recognises revenue stability as the foundation for national sovereignty.

“By reforming the FIRS and enforcing fiscal discipline across all tiers of government, the administration is freeing Nigeria from the perpetual cycle of borrowing and dependency,” Oladejo said.

According to him, each kobo collected through tax reforms is being reinvested into the people – in roads, schools, health care, security and social investment programmes.

“The Renewed Hope vision is simple but profound: to build a nation that funds its own future.

“This is what true nation building looks like – a Nigeria that generates wealth from within and uses it to empower its citizens,” he said.

He said it was in Lagos that the President first demonstrated that efficient tax administration could transform a state from near insolvency to economic powerhouse.

Oladejo called on citizens to embrace the Renewed Hope tax reforms as their patriotic contribution to nation building.

“A modern economy cannot thrive on oil alone. The strength of a nation lies in its citizens’ willingness to contribute to its growth. Paying tax is not punishment – it is partnership.

“With renewed faith, reformed systems, and responsible citizenship, the Tinubu administration is building a Nigeria that works, that pays its way, and that sustains its own development,” he said.

Why EFCC, ICPC, others must probe Ondo council chair, by APC elders

    • ’Allegations against me politically-motivated’

All Progressives Congress (APC) Elders’ Movement for Tinubu 2027 in Ondo State has called for the probe of the Chairman of Owo Local Government,  Tope Omolayo, over alleged misdemeanour.

The call followed Omolayo’s suspension by 11 councillors, who accused him of  irregularities, gross violation of statutory budget and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) regulations, disrespect for traditional rulers and inappropriate conduct.

The councillors, led by the House Leader, Doyin Adebayo, in a suspension letter, said the chairman’s actions were inconsistent with the financial and administrative ethics expected of a local government leader.

Omolayo’s suspension came barely a month after he alleged that council chairmen across the state had access to only N5 million monthly under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa’s administration despite higher allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC).

In a statement in Akure, the group’s state Coordinator, Agboola Kelly, urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police to investigate Omolayo’s financial dealings.

The group described the allegations against the council boss as “too grave to be ignored,” stressing that Omolayo’s conduct and his claims of inadequate funding should be scrutinised.

“Omolayo’s assertion that the state provides less than N5 million monthly raises questions about financial management at the local and state levels.

“EFCC and ICPC must invite him for questioning to ensure transparency and uphold APC’s commitment to good governance,” the statement said.

Reacting, Omolayo dismissed the allegations, describing them as politically- motivated.

“I remain the substantive chairman of Owo Local Government. What you see is a kangaroo suspension by people who are being sponsored. Their actions are politically-driven.

“They wanted me to share money meant for development. I refused to do the status quo, and now they are concocting lies because I didn’t play ball,” he alleged.

Lawmakers okay guidelines for administrative procedures in councils

Lagos State House of Assembly has approved comprehensive regulations and guidelines to strengthen administrative procedures and governance structures across local governments and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in the state.

The approval was granted through a resolution of the House, during plenary session presided over by Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Earlier, report on the Regulations and Guidelines, presented by Sanni Okanlawon (Kosofe I) on its second allotted date, was extensively deliberated upon by members before its adoption.

According to Section 5 of the newly approved guidelines, the Executive Committee of each local government shall comprise the Chairman, Vice Chairman, Supervisors, Special Advisers, Secretary to the Local Government, Council Manager, Council Treasurer and the Head of Legal Unit.

Section 6 stipulates that any appointment, not recognised by the guidelines, local government bye-laws, or other relevant laws shall require the express approval of the Governor of Lagos State.

Further clarifying the administrative hierarchy, Section 8 focuses on the Vice Chairman’s role. Subsection 8.1(a) outlines the functions and performance expectations of the Office, while 8.1(b) designates the Vice Chairman as Chairman of the Tenders Board.

In Section 15, the guidelines provide for the establishment of Departmental Standing Committees in each of the departments. These committees are mandated to meet at least twice a month—or as exigencies demand—to recommend departmental projects for the Executive Committee’s consideration and approval. Each committee shall consist of the Supervisor as Chairman, the Head of Department, Sectional Head, and a Representative of the Council Manager.

During deliberations, Aro Moshood described the guidelines as “top-notch,” saying they are capable of positioning Lagos State as a model for effective local governance in Nigeria. He, however, pointed out discrepancies in numbering between the main law and the regulation, calling for clarification.

Kehinde Joseph raised concerns about the omission of the Chief of Staff’s role despite its earlier mention in prior discussions, urging the responsible committee to review the matter.

Abiodun Orekoya emphasised the need to harmonise the number of supervisors stated in the guidelines with those provided in the principal law.

Bonu Solomon hailed the inclusion of community policing provisions, describing it as a progressive initiative that would enhance security and create employment opportunities across the state.

Ekiti APC Gov primary: Tight security as accreditation begins

Security has been tightened around the popular Ekiti Parapo Pavilion, Ado-Ekiti, venue of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election as accreditation of delegates commenced early Monday morning.

Armed security operatives drawn from the Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps were stationed at strategic points within and around the pavilion to ensure hitch-free exercise.

Vehicular movement around the venue was restricted, while heavy security checkpoints were mounted along major routes leading to the area.

Only accredited delegates, party officials, and journalists with official tags were granted access into the premises.

Representatives of the APC National Working Committee were also on ground to supervise the process.

As early as 7:00 a.m., delegates from the 177 wards in the 16 local government areas of the state had started arriving the venue for accreditation.

The atmosphere at the venue was calm but heavily guarded, with security agents conducting stop and search on vehicles and screening of individuals entering the premises.

Patrol vans and anti-riot personnel were also visible along adjoining streets.

A total of 885 delegates, five each from 177 wards across the state, are expected to participate in the exercise to affirm Governor Biodun Oyebanji as the party’s governorship flag bearer for the June 20, 2026 election.

The governor, who is the sole aspirant in the contest, is expected to be ratified by the delegates after the voting process in line with the party’s constitution and laid down internal electoral guidelines.

His unopposed emergence followed the withdrawal of Mrs. Atinuke Omolayo and the earlier disqualification of Kayode Ojo and Abimbola Olajumoke who failed to meet the party’s requirements.

Speaking to journalists, the Ekiti APC Publicity Secretary, Segun Dipe said the heavy security presence was part of precautionary measures to ensure a hitch-free and peaceful exercise.

He commended the cooperation of delegates and party stakeholders across the 16 councils.

“We are satisfied with the arrangements. The process has been smooth and peaceful so far. Our delegates have shown maturity and discipline, and we expect the exercise to end successfully”, he added.

A senior police officer at the venue of the primary told The Nation that the tight security arrangement was to guarantee safety and prevent unauthorized access.

He said the command had deployed enough personnel to cover the entire pavilion and adjoining areas.

The mood among party members was upbeat, with many chanting solidarity songs in support of Governor Oyebanji’s candidacy.

A delegate from Ijero local Government and former House of Representatives member, Bar. Wumi Ogunlola, described the process as smooth and well-coordinated.

She said the atmosphere reflected the unity within the party and the widespread acceptance of Oyebanji’s leadership.

“We came early and the accreditation has been orderly. Everyone is happy because this is a moment of reaffirming our faith in the governor’s leadership,” she said with excitement.

As of the time of filing this report, accreditation of delegates was still ongoing, with voting expected to commence shortly after.

Kwara community ends 40-year water scarcity

Residents of Jebba in Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State are excited over the availability of potable water in the community.

The community, surrounded by water, River Niger, has suffered water scarcity for over three decades.

But with the launch of Jebba Water Works in May last year, water now flows in the taps of residents of the riverine community.

The water works currently produces about 200,000 litres of water daily, supplying 150,000 litres to the overhead tank for distribution across the community.

An indigene of the community, Sulaiman Abdulwaheed, told reporters during a media tour, that residents now have access to clean, drinking water for at least four hours on a daily basis.

Abdulwaheed, a causal operator of the water facility, said the plant sourced its water from River Niger, which passed through purification stages before reaching consumers.

“We get the water from River Niger to the pressure house where sediments are removed, then to the filter where the water becomes about 70 per cent clean,” he said.

He says the water is later transferred to another tank where chlorine and alum are added and left for between 15 and 30 hours before being released to the overhead tank for public use.

Abdulwaheed said the community could enjoy up to 12 hours of daily water supply if the mainline pipe, overhead tank and power support systems were upgraded.

“We currently pump water for about two to three hours daily because the mainline pipe cannot withstand higher pressure.

“With a larger pipeline, an increased overhead tank capacity, and a standby generator to tackle power challenges, the community can have up to 12 hours of steady water supply.”

Abdulwaheed hailed the state government for easing the community’s long struggle with water scarcity. He, however, appealed for further intervention to ensure sustainability.

“The governor has truly relieved us of many years of hardship without water,” he said.

He added: “We only ask that the government help increase the tank capacity from 200,000 litres to 300,000 litres and provide a standby generator, so our people can have regular access to clean water.”

Don’t succumb to politicians’ intimidation, harassment, Osun ex-lawmaker tells INEC boss

A former lawmaker in Osun State,  Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has urged the newly-appointed Chairman of  Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash Amupitan, not to succumb to intimidation and harassment while discharging his duties.

Oyintiloye, a member of All Progressives Congress (APC), who was a member of the defunct APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), in a statement yesterday, also enjoined the INEC boss to demonstrate a high level of courage and integrity in the face of intimidation from politicians, especially opposition parties, ahead of the off-cycle and general elections.

He advised Amupitan not to disappoint Nigerians and to resist all forms of undue pressure from politicians, who might seek to blackmail the commission to discredit valid electoral processes.

He said the commission under Amupitan’s leadership must act in line with the established rules and regulations, as well as acceptable standard of practice, to avoid committing errors in the face of pressure from politicians.

“All eyes are on the new INEC boss, and I want to advise him to stay focused and resist all forms of pressure that can undermine the integrity of the commission. Amupitan must ignore all forms of negative criticism and ensure he abides by the laid-down rules and regulations for the conduct of free and fair elections.

“Those who lost elections will continue to undermine the efforts of the commission towards conducting credible elections for their own personal gain, but the INEC boss must fear no one. He must apply the rules without favour,” he added.

Oyintiloye hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing Amupitan for the job, saying his choice could not have been a mistake.

The APC chieftain said Amupitan’s appointment by the President showed he was a man of integrity and honour with capacity to sanitise the electoral processes.

He, however, noted that the November 8 Anambra governorship election and the 2026 governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun state would be a litmus test for Amupitan.

Congratulating him on his appointment, Oyintiloye said all eyes were on the new INEC boss to protect the integrity of the commission.

“We have gone past the stage of the provision of street lights in some major streets to the stage of personalising services, so as to ensure we reach out to churches, mosques, security offices, homes of notable community and political leaders, including heads of non-indigenes and traditional leaders.”
