Fire incidents destroy properties worth millions in Ibadan, Ogbomoso

Separate fire outbreaks in Ibadan and Ogbomoso, Oyo State, over the weekend have destroyed properties valued at millions of naira.

In Ogbomoso, a residential building located in the Oke-Elerin area was gutted by fire, destroying six rooms and three shops. Although no casualties were reported, several valuables were lost in the incident.

In Ibadan, a shopping complex in the Bibilari area of Bashorun was also affected by fire. However, only one of the twelve shops in the complex was damaged, thanks to the prompt intervention of the Oyo State Fire Services, which prevented the flames from spreading further.

Confirming the incidents, the Special Adviser on Fire Reform and Chairman, Oyo State Fire Services Agency, Dr. Moroof Akinwande, urged traders to be vigilant and adopt preventive measures against fire outbreaks.

He emphasised the importance of equipping shops with functional fire extinguishers and learning how to use them properly to curb minor fire incidents before they escalate.

  • Daniel urges Ogun residents to demand accountability over increased federal allocations

Daniel urges Ogun residents to demand accountability over increased federal allocations

Former governor of Ogun state and Senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, has called on his constituents to demand transparency and accountability from the state and local governments on how they have utilized the increased federal allocations received since the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking on Sunday at Idokunnusi, Ijebu Imushin, during his Midterm Community Assessment and Review Tour in Ijebu East Local Government, Daniel said both tiers of government have been receiving substantial allocations in the last two years and must justify how the funds have been spent.

Daniel, who represents nine local government areas under Ogun East Senatorial District, addressed a large gathering of political stakeholders, supporters, and constituents, using the occasion to distribute empowerment items, including motorcycles, deep freezers, sewing machines, fertilizers, sprayers, and grinding machines.

Responding to complaints about poor roads, unpaid stipends for traditional rulers, and general neglect of the region despite its economic potential, the senator explained that such issues fall under the responsibility of the state and local governments.

He expressed sympathy for the underdevelopment of the district, noting that the area is blessed with abundant natural resources that should make it a hub of prosperity.

Daniel also urged the Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration to revive the Olokola Deep Sea Port project, which his government initiated at Ode-Omi in Ogun Waterside Local Government, saying the project could create over 50,000 jobs, boost internally generated revenue, and transform the state’s economy.

The senator further disclosed that he has begun discussions with the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda to harness the bitumen deposits in Ijebu East for the benefit of Ogun State and Nigeria at large.

He said, “For our people here in Ijebu East, I share in some of your pains on the current state of underdevelopment, especially because I am aware that this whole community should be thriving in wealth and prosperity especially with the abundance of natural resources which God Almighty has endowed us which has the capacity to sustain an entire nation.

“During my time as Governor of Ogun State, we discovered that Ogun East has the largest deposit of Bitumen anywhere in Nigeria. Our vision then was very clear: to create a whole new city for Bitumen mining and exploration which we believe would increase the economic prosperity and impact positively on the lives of the people living in the area. We envisioned this area bubbling with multinational investments, industries, jobs, and infrastructure, all driven by Bitumen exploration and processing.

“Unfortunately, that vision stalled due to neglect after our administration. That is why I started by sympathizing with you because I understand your frustration and share in your hope for a new dawn.

“When you sent me to Abuja as your Senator, I took it as a sacred responsibility, not only to make laws (which of course is the primary responsibility of the Senate), but also to leverage on relationships with the President and other agencies of government at the executive level to influence government policies and attract development projects that can revive and empower our communities.

“I am in contact with, and delighted to inform you that the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, under the exceptional leadership of my friend and brother, Mr. Dele Alake, and in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has assured that the Bitumen wealth of Ijebu East will soon be put to productive use. I have every confidence in that assurance because Dele Alake is not only a trusted colleague and friend of over four decades; he is a man of results.

“Let me say with emphasis, the mining sector under President Tinubu has received greater attention and the revenue from the solid minerals sector has grown from ₦6 billion to ₦38 billion in just one year, a record-breaking transformation driven by efficiency, transparency, and accountability. And this was made possible by the President’s bold declarations that the era of exporting raw minerals is over and that mining licences will only be granted to investors who commit to local processing and value addition as a means of creating jobs for our local population and industries to ensure that prosperity derives from mining stay within Nigeria.”

Be more ruthless in dealing with insecurity – Osun ex-lawmaker tasks Service chiefs

A former Osun State lawmaker, Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called on the Service Chiefs to adopt a more ruthless approach in dealing with individuals and groups involved in violent crimes across the country.

Oyintiloye, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), made the call in a statement on Sunday, stressing that while security agencies have made commendable efforts to curb insecurity, more decisive action is needed to end persistent killings, especially in parts of the North.

The former member of the APC Presidential Campaign Council expressed deep concern over the rising cases of attacks by suspected bandits in Kwara, Borno, Zamfara, and Niger states. He urged security leaders to take bold and uncompromising steps against both perpetrators and their sponsors.

He lamented that many Nigerians continue to live in fear despite ongoing counterterrorism efforts, and urged the Service Chiefs not to relent until terrorism and banditry are completely eradicated.

“There is no doubt that the Service Chiefs are doing their best to stop the killings by bandits,” he said, “but they need to be more ruthless with them until they quench the insurgency in our land.”

Oyintiloye also cautioned against internal sabotage within security formations and advised the military and other agencies to fully deploy their available human and material resources to restore public confidence and ensure lasting peace across the country.

“I will also urge them to look inward and fish out those who might be working against their relentless efforts to crush the activities of the terrorists in the country completely. This is very important to restore public confidence in the security agencies.

“People are tired, and many of them are living in fear of the unknown due to the activities of those perpetrating violent crimes in the country,” he said.

Oyintiloye also highlighted the need for the service chiefs to involve local security networks in intelligence gathering to tackle the menace.

Oyintiloye further said that the security agencies should also target the financial backbone of terrorist groups in the country to complement their efforts.

He, however, commended President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly for providing the needed support and budgetary allocation for the security agencies to reduce violent crimes in the country.

He predicted that with the cooperation of all stakeholders, acts of faith, patriotism, honesty, and a positive mindset on the part of Nigerians, the country would defeat the menace of insecurity in due course.

  • CSOs, APC clash over mass defection of Ondo lawmakers

CSOs, APC clash over mass defection of Ondo lawmakers

The Coalition of All Civil Society Organisations in Ondo State (CACSOD) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have traded words following the mass defection of opposition lawmakers in the State House of Assembly to the ruling party.

The development followed the official defection of two Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers — Oladiji Oguntudo, representing Akure South Constituency I, and Raymond Daodu, Deputy Minority Leader and member representing Akoko South West Constituency I — to the APC during plenary.

Before their defection, Oguntudo and Daodu were the only remaining PDP members in the Assembly, which is presided over by Speaker Olamide Oladiji and already dominated by the APC. Their move now gives the ruling party total control of all 26 seats, leaving the parliament without an opposition.

Reacting to the development, the Coalition of All Civil Society Organisations in Ondo State (CACSOD) described the situation as a major threat to democracy and accountability.

In a statement signed by its Chairman, Alo Martins, the coalition warned that a legislature without opposition undermines checks and balances and weakens governance.

“A democratic system without an effective opposition is a democracy in name only,” the statement read.

However, the APC defended the defections, describing them as an endorsement of the ruling party’s performance and leadership. The party said the lawmakers’ decision to join its ranks reflects growing public confidence in its efforts to deliver good governance and improve the lives of Ondo residents.

“Opposition lawmakers are essential for checks and balances, rigorous policy debates, and oversight of the executive arm. When the legislature becomes a one-party chamber, it risks degenerating into a rubber stamp, unable to question policies, demand transparency, or defend citizens’ interests.”

The group described the mass defection as a “betrayal of the electorate’s trust,” noting that the lawmakers were elected based on specific party manifestos and platforms.

CACSOD said, “Voters who supported opposition candidates now find themselves represented by members of the ruling party without their consent. Such political opportunism undermines the integrity of elections and erodes citizens’ faith in the democratic process.”

The coalition called on the National Assembly and the ongoing Constitution Review Committee to strengthen the anti-defection law, particularly Section 109(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution, which allows defections on the grounds of internal party division.

It said the clause had been “grossly abused by politicians who manufacture or exaggerate internal crises to justify crossing over to the ruling side.”

CACSOD added, “We further call for a constitutional amendment that makes it mandatory for any elected official who wishes to defect from the party under which they were elected to first resign from office and seek a fresh mandate under their new platform.”

The group warned that the absence of opposition in the Assembly could erode accountability, stifle dissenting voices, and embolden impunity in governance.

It urged citizens to be vigilant and reject politicians who engage in “political carpet-crossing” for personal gain.

“Citizens must shine their eyes. We must no longer reward political carpet-crossers who prioritize personal gain over public service,” the group said.

Reaffirming its commitment to defending democracy, the coalition stated, “Democracy loses its meaning when every voice in the legislature sings the same tune. For governance to serve the people, there must always be room for dissent, dialogue, and accountability.”

But in a swift reaction, the APC dismissed the criticism, describing the defections as a validation of the party’s progressive governance under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement signed by its Director, Media and Publicity, Steve Otaloro, the party explained that both leaders have demonstrated a clear commitment to the development of Ondo State and Nigeria as a whole.

The APC added that it rejected the notion that a political movement is a betrayal of democratic values, maintaining that in a competitive polity, elected representatives retain the right to choose the platform that best enables them to serve their constituents.

According to the party, to suggest otherwise is to stifle democracy and undermine the will of the people.

“Also, we take umbrage with CACSOD’s assertion that the absence of opposition equates to the death of democracy. This is a myopic view that fails to recognize that democracy thrives on performance, accountability, and the consent of the governed. If political actors and parties fail to offer credible leadership, coherent programmes, or measurable results, they forfeit the confidence of their members and supporters.

“We welcome our new members, the House Minority Leader, Hon. Olajide Oguntodu, Akure South 1, and Hon. Oluwatoyin Daodu, from Akoko South West 1, and pledged to treat them with dignity and equity. They will be mentored, supported, and given the platform to aspire to any position for which they are suitably qualified. Our doors are open to talent, integrity, and dedication,” the statement read.

The party urged civil society and all well-meaning citizens to judge political developments by their substance and outcomes rather than alarmist rhetoric.

It, however, added that the people of the state deserve governance that works – practical, accountable, and results-oriented, stressing that APC remains committed to providing exactly that.

  • Aiyedatiwa commends Tinubu for establishing south-west development commission

Aiyedatiwa commends Tinubu for establishing south-west development commission

Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has praised President Bola Tinubu for establishing the South-West Development Commission (SWDC), describing it as a strategic move to bridge developmental gaps and unlock the region’s vast economic potential.

President Tinubu signed the SWDC Bill into law in March 2025, mandating the commission to drive infrastructure development, economic growth, and social welfare across the South-West. The bill, sponsored by Senator Gbenga Daniel representing Ogun East, received overwhelming support from both chambers of the National Assembly before its final assent.

Speaking at a thanksgiving reception held in honour of Dr. Jide Martins Adewinle, the newly appointed Federal Commissioner representing Ondo State in the commission, Aiyedatiwa said the SWDC would address regional disparities and promote sustainable development.

“The establishment of the South-West Development Commission is a laudable step by the Federal Government to tackle developmental imbalances, harness regional potential, and promote sustainable growth. With the right leadership and collaboration, the commission will serve as a veritable tool for economic revitalisation, infrastructural renewal, and social transformation in our region,” he said.

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s readiness to partner with the commission to advance infrastructure renewal, industrialisation, and youth empowerment across Ondo State’s 18 local government areas.

He also described the appointment of Dr. Adewinle as well-deserved, noting that it was a recognition of competence, capacity, and character.

“Over the years, Dr Adewinle has demonstrated exceptional commitment to community development, youth empowerment, and professionalism,” Aiyedatiwa said.

“His appointment further projects Ondo State as a reservoir of capable men and women who can stand tall anywhere in service to our nation.”

The governor urged the new appointee to embrace humility, inclusiveness, and vision in his stewardship.

“Leadership is stewardship imbued with humility and accountability. Let your service reflect diligence and integrity. Expectations are high, but I’m confident that you will make Ondo proud,” he added.

Aiyedatiwa also assured that the state government would continue to work closely with the SWDC and other federal institutions to ensure Ondo people benefit maximally from ongoing and future developmental projects.

“Our administration will continue to collaborate with the Commission to enhance regional integration, agricultural development, industrialisation, and youth empowerment—key pillars of our development agenda,” he said.

In his response, Dr Adewinle expressed gratitude to God, President Tinubu, and Governor Aiyedatiwa for the opportunity to serve, promising to justify the confidence reposed in him.

He described the Commission as a platform designed to promote education, infrastructure, welfare, and economic empowerment, positioning the South-West for sustainable development.

According to him, the establishment of the SWDC aligns with the visionary blueprint of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, whose policies in education, agriculture, and infrastructure transformed the region into Nigeria’s economic hub.

“What President Tinubu has done through this Commission is a continuation of Chief Awolowo’s dream for a prosperous South-West – a region driven by unity, innovation, and progress,” Adewinle said.

“The Commission will rekindle that legacy by driving growth in education, welfare, and infrastructure.”

He further explained that the SWDC would address the challenges of centralised development by implementing region-specific projects to boost economic fortunes and create jobs.

Chairman of Okitipupa Local Government, Andrew Ogunsakin, also commended the governor for approving a 5km road project in the council area and lauded the various ongoing projects across the state.

The Thanksgiving event, held at Adekunbi Hall, Iye Ile Resort Centre, Ode-Aye, drew dignitaries from across the country, including traditional rulers, political associates, and well-wishers who joined in celebrating the new appointee.

Rights group faults FIJ over ‘false’ corruption report, accuses platform of unethical journalism

A civil society organisation, the Niger Delta Rights Advocates (NDRA), has condemned the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) over what it described as an “unethical and misleading” report alleging corruption against a public servant under the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS).

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Director of Research and Documentation at NDRA, Dr. Chuks Alozie, accused FIJ of publishing a one-sided story that allegedly maligned Mr. Adagiri Ismail, a senior officer of the NCoS.

Alozie said FIJ’s online reports of October 6 and 8, 2025, portrayed a suspect currently facing trial as a victim and hero, in a manner inconsistent with the standards of professional journalism.

“FIJ’s reports of October 6 and 8 were clear attempts at hoodwinking the public. They portrayed a suspected criminal standing trial before an FCT High Court (Charge No. CR/669/23) as a hero, which runs contrary to journalistic ethics,” Alozie stated.

According to the NDRA, the case stemmed from an alleged act of impersonation and forgery of Mr. Ismail’s office documents.

The suspect, identified as Aliyu Raji, was said to have used forged letterheads and office insignia to obtain millions of naira through false pretences and fraudulent contract awards.

Alozie noted that the suspect was initially granted bail and subsequently approached FIJ for media coverage after filing a fundamental rights suit against the complainant and the police.

The court, however, reportedly dismissed the case and awarded ₦1 million in costs against the applicant in favour of all respondents.

The NDRA accused FIJ of failing to exercise due diligence by not investigating all sides of the story or granting Mr. Ismail a right of reply before publication.

The group demanded an immediate retraction or corrigendum from the online platform, insisting that the reports breached the ethical codes governing responsible journalism.

“While citizen journalism strengthens democracy, it must not be used as a tool for defamation or sedition. Defending the rights of an individual facing criminal prosecution should never come at the expense of truth, fairness, and balance”, Alozie warned.

The NDRA reaffirmed its commitment to media freedom but urged journalists and citizen reporters alike to uphold the principles of integrity and impartiality when handling sensitive corruption-related cases.

ASCSN members picket solidarity house, demand transparent election

Over 150 members of the Lagos State Council of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) for the second time in less than a month stormed the state secretariat popularly known as “solidarity house”, locking it up over alleged imposition.

In the past few months, Lagos ASCSN chapter has been engulfed in crisis since its emergency delegates’ conference where members unanimously resolved to remove the state secretary.

But the national leadership’s letter nullifying the conference has now escalated the situation, with the state chapter insisting it will resist what it called “undemocratic interference.”

The aggrieved members, who converged as early as 8:00am, carried placards with inscriptions such as “No to imposition,” “Our constitution must be respected,” and “We stand for democracy,” chanting solidarity songs and vowing not to back down until justice is served.

Addressing the gathering on behalf of the aggrieved members, Comrade Rotimi accused the embattled secretary of contesting an election he was not qualified for and declaring himself winner.

“The actions of the state secretary, including contesting an election he wasn’t qualified for and declaring himself winner, are unacceptable,” Rotimi declared.

“The forceful reopening of our secretariat based on a biased letter from the National Secretary General is a clear disregard for our rules and procedures enshrined in Rule 19 of our constitution. By locking up the secretariat again, we are protecting our Association’s integrity, upholding democratic principles, and demanding a fair and transparent process.”

The aggrieved members, in their charter of demands, called for the immediate intervention of relevant authorities, a thorough investigation into the alleged misconduct, and a new, transparent election in line with the agreement reached with the leadership of Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, at the aborted September 17, 2025 election.

According to them, the alleged imposition of the state secretary undermines the union’s democratic values and threatens industrial harmony in the state civil service.

“We will not be intimidated or silenced. We stand united in defense of our Association,” Rotimi added to the cheers of the crowd.

Security operatives have been stationed around the premises to prevent any breakdown of law and order, with members vowing to maintain their lock-up action until their demands are met.

During a courtesy visit to the FCCPC headquarters in Abuja, Gbenga Abiola, national coordinator of the group, praised Bello for his commitment to fairness, transparency, and consumer protection across Nigeria’s business landscape.

He described Bello’s leadership as a reflection of President Tinubu’s vision for a just and inclusive economy that prioritizes the welfare of citizens.

Under Bello’s leadership, the FCCPC has strengthened regulatory oversight, promoted accountability, and ensured fair competition in the marketplace.

The Commission was named government agency of the year 2023 after generating ₦56 billion in Internally Generated Revenue, with ₦22.4 billion remitted to the federal government from enforcement penalties and compliance actions.

The FCCPC has also implemented several consumer-focused initiatives, including the Patient Bill of Rights, clampdowns on illegal digital money lenders, and interventions in the power sector to safeguard consumers.

The Commission continues to collaborate with agencies such as the NCC, NERC, NAFDAC, SON, and EFCC to promote fairness and consumer welfare nationwide.

A key issue discussed during the visit was the FCCPC’s ongoing engagement with MultiChoice Nigeria over its March 2025 subscription price hike.

Bello reaffirmed that such actions must comply with fairness and transparency laws.

Abiola commended his courage in defending consumer rights, describing it as a true expression of the Renewed Hope spirit.

He assured Bello of the Tinubu Media Force’s continued collaboration in public enlightenment and grassroots communication on the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He emphasised that the group remains committed to projecting the achievements of the Tinubu administration and promoting transparency across all sectors.

He encouraged Mr. Bello and his team to sustain their efforts in protecting consumers, adding that through the FCCPC’s work, Nigerians can see the values of Renewed Hope, fairness, accountability, and citizen empowerment being translated into meaningful action.

Bandits abduct tipper driver, motor boy escapes in Ondo

The Ondo State Security Network Agency, codenamed Amotekun Corps, has confirmed the abduction of a tipper driver, identified as Tobi Abdulmalik Oluwatuyi, at Ilu Abo, in the Akure North Local Government Area of the state.

Oluwatuyi was reportedly kidnapped by suspected armed men in the early hours of Friday.

Confirming the incident, the Commander of the Amotekun Corps, Adetunji Adeleye, said the victim was seized by the gunmen after his truck developed a fault along the Akure/Owo Highway, leading to the Ilu Abo community.

According to him, while the driver was making efforts to fix the faulty truck, the assailants suddenly emerged from the bush and dragged him away at gunpoint.

Adeleye added that the driver’s assistant, popularly known as a motor boy, managed to escape and quickly alerted the owner of the truck, Monday Ayesoro.

The Amotekun commander further disclosed that operatives of the corps, in collaboration with local vigilante groups, have launched an intensive bush-combing operation to rescue the victim.

“We are already combing the forest and have blocked the routes leading to Ise- in Ekiti State to prevent the kidnappers from escaping. We are on top of the situation and determined to secure the victim’s release,” Adeleye assured.

The latest abduction at Ilu Abo has heightened fears among locals that criminal gangs are operating with increasing boldness in Akure North LGA.

Amid the ugly development, community leaders and traders have increased calls for stepped-up patrols, better intelligence-sharing, and immediate action from both state security outfits and the police to prevent more attacks.
