APC will take over Anambra in 2025 – Ngige

The former minister of Labour and Employment, Sen. Chris Ngige, says the All Progressives Congress (APC)  will  take over power from the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra in 2025.

Ngige, a former governor of Anambra said this on Saturday while speaking to newsmen at his home in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area, during the distribution of palliatives to party members, persons with disabilities and the aged.

He admitted that APC had two factions in the state but said the division would not stop the party from winning the 2025 governorship election as aggrieved members would be pacified before the election.

“Of course there is APC 1 and APC 2 in the state. I will not deny that. I am both the father and face of APC in Anambra. I am certain that there are some new comers who have joined us since 2021.

“Because the party is like a church which you do not stop people from entering; you do not stop people from entering the party to look for salvation or to support the government in power.

“But the challenge is that the new entrants do not want to reckon with old members who have laboured for the party.

“The old members laboured for the party from the time we were in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to Advanced Congress of Democrats (ACD) to Action Congress (AC) to Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and finally birthed as APC.”

According to him, these are facts that are undeniable and palpable. But in politics you disagree to agree and if you do not agree, you bear the consequences. We did not agree in the 2021 election and the repercussions were clear.

“But it will be remedied this time. The party leadership both at the governmental level and party levels are mature politicians who are versed with the intrigues,” he said.

Ngige, also a former governor of Anambra, said he was optimistic that APC would successfully resolve its crisis and work to take over the state in 2025.

He said that victory was not won on platter but needed extra hard work, warning that the era of writing election results in hotel rooms was over.

“Why won’t I be optimistic? If you are not optimistic in life, then suicide is the next option. I’m hopeful and optimistic that between now and 2025 we will put our house in order.

“We need to be steadfast as party members and you must live up to expectations of being a foundation member and demonstrate tolerance to others by showing them the light.”

Ngige, however, disclosed that he was still on sabbatical and resting, saying that by May 2025, he would decide on his next line of action.

Speaking earlier, Chief George Moghalu, former managing director, National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and APC chieftain in Anambra, warned against imposition of candidates ahead of the 2025 governorship election in the state.

He also urged new party entrants to join the queue as anything contrary would frustrate chances of the party in producing Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s successor.

According to Moghalu, it is an irony for a tenant to sack the landlord.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the palliatives include bags of rice, and tubers of yam among others.

Diri’s allies urge oppositioncandidates to rally round governor

    • Applaud Bayelsans for re-electing gov

Political allies of Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, under the auspices of Friends of Senator Douye Diri (FSDD), have urged the opposition candidates in the November 18, 2023 governorship poll to rally round the governor to enhance the accelerated development of the state.

The National President, FSDD, Prince Bodi Arerebo, who made the appeal on Saturday at a press conference in Yenagoa, the state capital, said even the opposition knew that Governor Diri won the last poll by a landslide and should embrace the governor to move the state forward.

Arerebo applauded the people of Bayelsa for re-electing Governor Diri, saying that God is the person that appointed Diri apart from him being a good material, a good product and good candidate for them to sell.

The chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stated: “We advertised Governor Diri and showcased him to Bayelsa people and they saw that he is a very good product and they all voted for him.

“So at this first press conference after the victory of Diri, we really want to thank Bayelsans. That is the reason it is good to have a good name. That is the reason it is good to lead a good life because definitely there is a reward.

“The other person doesn’t have this kind of good name. All of us know the type of person he is. He is not hiding it and he is not ashamed of it. We thank God that he gave us somebody that will pilot the affairs of Bayelsa in the next four years from February 14, 2024 when he would take the oath of office.

“Bayelsans in the next four years should expect superb development. There is going to be a massive development across the entire state. That is what he (Diri) promised people like us who are insiders. The moment he takes the oath of office for a second term, he would hit the ground running and the state would be happier for it.”

Speaking on the plans by some opposition flag bearers to challenge the outcome of last election in court, Arerebo said Diri would still emerge victorious because he won the election fair and square and his victory is incontrovertible.

He noted: “At Diri’s first election, he won all the suits against him and that made people of the state to nickname him ‘Miracle Governor’. In this past election of November 18, 2023, he won it by a landslide. The gap was overwhelming. That same God is still in existence.

“We know that even at the court, victory is sure. Despite all attempts by the opposition to rig the election, Diri won them. Therefore, at the court we will win again and we will celebrate.

“We wish to tell all the opposition candidates to know that the election has come and gone and we should work together so that the development we are agitating for will cut across the entire state. Let us learn how to forgive and forget and sheathe our swords for the good of the state.

Delta Oil Commission: Board members, management in supremacy battle

There is a crisis in Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC) with allegations of nepotism, highhandedness and poor governance issues against its executive management team led by Mr Festus Ochonogor.

The 14 member board, inaugurated by the immediate past governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa in the twilight of his tenure, has Mr John Nani as Chairman, and Mr Festus Ochonogor as Managing Director of the state interventionist agency.

While Efele Nicholas,Talib Tebite, Favour Izoukomor and Oghenekome Okpobor are Executive Directors.

Some board members allege due process was bypassed by the Managing Director Mr. Festus Ochonogor in the appointment of Heads of Department. They said the appointments were done without ratification by the board.

A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, warned that the next board meeting may be stormy, adding that aggrieved members are calling for the appointments to be rescinded.

“The next Board meeting of DESOPADEC might run into stormy waters as the executive management appointed HODs without a board resolution. The due process ought to be that the Commissioner and the Executive Directors nominate candidates for HOD positions, which are forwarded to the Board for ratification or approval and the Board will direct the Managing Director to post the new HODs. But for the newly posted HODs due process was disregarded causing friction among the Board members who claimed that they were not aware of any meeting where it was deliberated upon.”

The Nation gathered that during the 2023 governorship election all HoDs were mandated to canvass for votes for the ruling People’s Democratic Party but were replaced four months into their tenures.

It was learnt that the HoD (Legal Department) was removed from office on grounds that two staff members, who were on Grade level 16, were senior to him in the department.

Investigation by our reporter further revealed that the present board appointed a new HoD (Administration) on Grade level 14 despite the presence of two other officers on Grade level 16 in the department.

The Nation further learnt that the executive management team threatened to post any staff to Area offices if any form of protest arises over the recent postings.

The source said the executive management team downplayed the posting insisting they were “routine.”

It was also learnt that some aggrieved board members are awaiting the Board chairman to convene a meeting where they will vent their anger on the executive management for running the Commission without the inputs of the entire board, especially where a board resolution is required to authenticate a policy.

Reacting, Mr Festus Ochonogor admitted that there were lapses in the administrative process of the agency which he attributed to the outgone management team.

He said, “It is true that the management style during the last administration of the agency is zero. The issue arose in the last three years when the last management team ran the agency as a sole administratorship. The HoD’s case is correct. The administrative process is zero because one or two persons took decisions for the entire board. These are the issues we are trying to resolve.”
