    Victory march for Uzodimma

The leadership and members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Imo State yesterday embarked on a march within the Owerri capital territory to express their happiness over the victory of Governor Hope Uzodimma during last Saturday’s governorship election.

Imo State APC Chairman, Dr. Macdonald Ebere, had led his team of party officials from the state, local governments and wards on the march, starting from the APC headquarters on Okigwe road round the metropolis before anchoring at the Government House, Owerri to formally congratulate their leader and governor, Senator Uzodimma, on his electoral exploits.

Addressing reporters and members of the party, Ebere said the march round the state capital was to show how happy the members were and to thank God for Governor Uzodimma’s victory.

”The happiness of the members of the party in the state and beyond knows no bounds,” he said.

Ebere urged the governor to use his second term opportunity to do more for the state and to make the party members happier, saying “God chooses only one person at a time to lead.”

Secretary to Government of Imo State, Chief Cosmos Iwu, who represented the governor, thanked the APC faithful for deeming it fit to come to congratulate their own.

On behalf of the governor, Iwu assured Imo people and the party that though “the renewed mandate is full of challenges, His Excellency is equal to the task.’’

  • Ex-agitator leaders blame Sylva/Tompolo alliance for APC’s defeat

Ex-agitator leaders blame Sylva/Tompolo alliance for APC’s defeat

Some ex-Niger Delta agitator leaders have attributed the defeat of the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Timipre Sylva, to the alleged unholy alliance between him and a former militant leader, Government Ekpemukpolo, popularly called Tompolo.

They claimed that the previous award of over $370 million belonging to Bayelsa State (central corridor) to a contractor in Delta State angered many of the ex-militants at the corridor.

The ex-agitator leaders in a statement yesterday said the wide acceptance of the winner of the just-concluded Bayelsa governorship poll by the electorate was made possible by them to counter the undemocratic plan of Sylva/Tompolo alliance.

The statement signed by Fidelis Nagard, also called ‘Water Phython’, said the action of the ex-militant leaders was carried out as a show of force to let the Federal Government know that Tompolo is no longer a political factor in the Niger Delta.

The statement said: “We had it on good authority that Tompolo promised the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, that he will ensure Chief Timipre Sylva wins in Bayelsa State, but other ex-militant leaders agreed on a counter plan to show to the Federal Government that Tompolo is not a political force in the region.

“Tompolo is only riding on past glory in which major ex-militant leaders played vital roles. Tompolo betrayed ex-militant leaders to secure the pipeline surveillance contract for himself and his ally.

“For the record, ex-militant leaders did not even deploy 10 per cent of our plans and arsenal before checkmating the Sylva/Tompolo tactics.”

The ex-militant leaders, however, called on the Federal Government to ensure that development and empowerment policies for the region were not channelled through Tompolo and his likes.

They called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to deal with each state separately, saying any politician that passes through Tompolo will be disgraced.

They advised the Federal Government to take a close review of the crude oil pipeline surveillance contract and ensure it is decentralised across the corridors in the region.

“If it is awarded to only one contractor, it is dead on arrival. If they go ahead, it will be sabotaged. The Federal Government should decentralise the contract for national and economic security interest of the country,” they said.

Kinsmen to Edo deputy governor Shaibu: run for governor

In spite of Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, anointing a Lagos-based lawyer, Asue Ighodalo, the kinsmen of Deputy Governor, Comrade Philip Shaibu, have unanimously endorsed him to vie for the state’s governorship election next year.

Shaibu’s kinsmen, who are mostly members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in his Ward 11, Etsako West Local Government, in Edo North Senatorial District, described him as the right person to succeed Obaseki on November 12, 2024.

The admonition was made yesterday during a carnival-like reception for Shaibu, with PDP’s Ward 11 Chairman in Etsako West Local Government, Igbafe Agbonoga, affirming Edo deputy governor’s acceptability among his people and party’s faithful.

Ighodalo hails from Edo Central Senatorial District, with Obaseki, an indigene of Benin in Edo South Senatorial District, fully backing him to emerge as the PDP candidate, ahead of the September 21, 2024 governorship election, to ensure justice, equity and fairness.

Agbonoga said: “The show of genuine love by the excited party leaders is a pointer to the fact that PDP’s governorship primary election will be a referendum for the passionate Edo Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu, with a masterplan, on a mission for practical governance for all-round development of Edo State.

“We have agreed that Comrade Shaibu must run for 2024 governorship election in Edo State. We know that he will make a huge difference, if elected as the next governor of our dear state. Our decision is based on the ideology of Edo deputy governor’s practicality in governance, during his tenure as a member of Edo House of Assembly, as the Majority Leader, and in the National Assembly, which focused on paradigm shift in governance.”

“Ward 11 PDP members and leaders, after critically examining the antecedents and capacity of Edo deputy governor, decided to endorse and support him to run and win the Edo 2024 governorship election. The decision was taken with due consultations with members of PDP across the entire Ward 11 of PDP in Estako West Local Government.

“Comrade Shaibu is the most credible and qualified person for Edo 2024 governorship. As residents of the state prepare to elect a new governor in less than a year, we need not just any politician, but a man with the best interest of Edo at heart, in addition to his wealth of experience. We need the incumbent deputy governor to steer the ship of Edo from the failed expectations and disappointments that have been our bane in the last seven years.”

The ward chairman also stated that after careful scrutiny of the politicians who were aspiring to be the next governor of Edo State, he and other chieftains of PDP in the area found that the most suitable person for the job was Shaibu, thereby endorsing him.

  • Nothing will make me quarrel with Nwifuru, says Umahi

Nothing will make me quarrel with Nwifuru, says Umahi

Minister of Works, Chief David Umahi, has said nothing will make him quarrel with his successor, Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, whom he described as ‘a worthy son’.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that there are insinuations in the political circles that Umahi’s ‘boys’ who fought assiduously for Nwifuru’s enthronement had been marginalised.

Umahi made the declaration yesterday in Abakaliki during a reception organised by Nwifuru in honour of former political office holders in the state.

The minister said he had no regrets standing, fighting and risking his life in ensuring that Nwifuru became the governor.

“I have no regrets knowing and trusting him for 16 years as only few persons present can boast of relationships that last for such periods.

“The most beautiful thing is that Nwifuru knows everything we did as there was nothing such as projects that did not pass through him,” he said.

The former Senate Deputy Majority Leader said he sowed heavily in Ebonyi and in Nwifuru and would therefore reap from them.

“Anyone who prays not to reap where he sows should keep such prayer,” the minister said.

He noted that he would not put any form of pressure on Governor Nwifuru as he did not forget anything in Ebonyi Government House.

“I will not apologise to those who feel offended by my actions again because I have done so while leaving office.

“All my mistakes and successes have been inherited by Nwifuru as we made friends and enemies together.

“I urge everyone to be patient with the governor because he has good intentions to develop the state,” he said.

Governor Nwifuru, who was the Speaker of the House of Assembly during Umahi’s reign as governor, thanked him and former political appointees for honouring the reception.

“Umahi is my father, boss and mentor as words cannot describe what he has done for me in life,” he said.

Nwifuru called on Ebonyi people to be patient with his government.

“We have completed the policies of the past administration and will concentrate more on human empowerment,” he said.

NAN reports that former executive council members, principal officers of government, House of Assembly members, among other political office holders, graced the occasion.

  • Subsidy removal: Mbah okays N25,000 cash awardfor Enugu workers

Subsidy removal: Mbah okays N25,000 cash awardfor Enugu workers

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has announced a cash award of between N10, 000 and N25, 000 to workers on government payroll.

The implementation of the wage award which starts next month will last till April.

Mbah, who said the government’s gesture was to cushion the effect of petrol subsidy removal, hoped that the new minimum wage negotiation would soon be concluded.

He dropped the hint yesterday at a joint news briefing with the leadership of the organised Labour at the Government House, Enugu.

The governor said that his administration was also implementing other social interventions apart from the cash transfer to better the lives of workers. He restated that the welfare of workers remained a priority.

According to him, a happy workforce will compliment government’s laudable plans for the state.

He also announced an increase in the state social register enrolment from 43,000 to 260,000, promising to lift more indigent citizens out of poverty through cash transfers and other social interventions.

The governor said: “As you may be aware, since the removal of the petroleum subsidy, we have been in constant negotiation with the Labour unions in the state, crafting a way forward on how we can provide palliatives to our teeming workforce.

“So, by the time you put a monetary value to all the social services we have provided, it will weigh well above N100,000 minimum wage.

“But, in addition to that, with effect from December, we are going to also make a flat payment to all the categories of our workers, beginning from our local government to the primary and secondary school teachers and civil servants.

“We are going to categorise them and there will be flat payment of between N10, 000 and 25,000, depending on the category.

“That payment is going to continue until April 2024,” he said.

Mbah also said: “It is our hope that by the end of April, the committee that is reviewing the minimum wage would have come out with what would then become the new minimum wage in the state.

“So, from there, we are just going to carry on the implementation of what is then set as the minimum wage.”

He reaffirmed the determination of his administration to achieve zero per cent poverty headcount index by 2031.

He said the state had set aside N1.5 billion for social development programmes, like water and sanitation in the communities.

Mbah said: “This is in addition to constructing 260 model primary health centers and 260 smart schools with accompanying teachers’ quarters.

“The state is just concluding the update of our social register and we have now expanded it from 43,000 to accommodate up to 260,000 indigent people in our state.

“That is also a platform that we are going to use to do cash transfers to engage our indigent ones,” he said.

Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in the state, Fabian Nwigbo, and his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Benneth Asogwa, thanked the governor for his proactive steps towards the welfare of Enugu workers.

They said they were happy that Enugu workers did not have to lobby, protest or embark on strike to have their salaries and welfare addressed.

“I am overwhelmed by your pronouncements this afternoon.

“We are grateful for the announcement because there was no war to get this.

“We did not come begging and crying or shouting and agitating.

“It was out of the abundance of your heart that you decided to greet us with this big news.

“Actually, it has been great for the people of Enugu State, especially the workers under your administration.

“First of all, our salaries come as and when due and our promotion is also on the way for 2023.

“In the past, you have to spend years before you get promoted.  “So, as workers, we will do all we can to ensure that this government succeeds,” Nwigbo said.

    • RCCG donates facility

Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno has approved the establishment of 10 dialysis centres in each of the federal constituencies in the state

The governor has directed the recruitment and training of professionals to meet the manpower needs of the centres, which are to be fully operational by next June.

He spoke yesterday at the Immanuel General Hospital, Eket, where he inaugurated Enoch and Folu Adeboye Dialysis Centre.

The centre was donated by the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).

Eno ordered the deployment of personnel from the state hospitals in the dialysis centre to ensure the facility is not underutilised due to lack of personnel.

“I have directed the Head of Civil Service to work with the Ministry of Health and the Civil Service Commission to absorb them as quickly as possible so that we can have permanent workers here. We don’t want to have equipment here, yet we don’t have the manpower to operate them,” he said.

The governor made a case for aggressive sensitisation on kidney related ailments and measures to checkmate their occurrence.

He directed that the Ministry of Health should collaborate with the Ministry of Information and Office of the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor to undertake the sensitisation.

  • Stakeholders fume over Ndiomu’s ‘inefficiency’, plan protest

Stakeholders fume over Ndiomu’s ‘inefficiency’, plan protest

Protest for the sack of the Interim Administrator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Maj.-Gen Barry Tariye Ndiomu (Rtd), is imminent, following alleged reports of “inefficiency” by the PAP boss.

Stakeholders under the auspices of Niger Delta Emancipators gave the hint in a statement yesterday by its President, Opuwei Ogelekekeme, in Warri, Delta State.

Ogelekekeme said the group and other critical stakeholders in the Niger Delta would storm Abuja soon to protest Ndiomu’s continuous stay in office and alleged failure in “reintegrating freedom fighters into the society and in the smooth operation of the Amnesty programme.”

The group had called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, to remove Ndiomu for a more capable hand who understands the struggle of stakeholders.

It stated that “the prevailing peace in the region appears threatened by complaints not only of corruption but also of Major-Gen. Ndiomu’s oversight of the amnesty programme’s fundamental goals.”

It was gathered that hundreds of ex-agitators enrolled in the second phase of the Amnesty programme convened in Bomadi, Bomadi Local Government to make resolutions on the next line of action to take concerning the developers.

Operating under the umbrella of the ‘Second Phase General,’ this group had issued a 21-day ultimatum for Ndiomu to step down, otherwise he would face the discontent of those who had borne the brunt of ensuring peace, tranquility and development in the region, The Nation learnt.

According to a source, the ex-militants contemplated two options, “to advocate an overhaul of the Presidential Amnesty Programme by removing Ndiomu, whom they accuse of following the path set by the past administration in terminating the programme or to return to the creeks where they belong.”

A stakeholder and Speaker of the Ijaw Mobile Parliament, Kingsley Warekuromor, said if Ndiomu was indeed following the past administration’s approach to ending the PAP, “it indicates lack of goodwill toward President Tinubu and potentially inciting unrest in the region”.

Ezonfade Otus-Kelly, an Ijaw Youth Council leader from Seimbiiri clan in Delta State, Western Zone, stressed the importance of reintegrating the ex-agitators.

Tabai England and Timibrabo Tevin of the Ijaw Patriotic Group, in their assessment of the ex-agitators’ assembly, urged President Tinubu to take actions by appointing a qualified leader for the Amnesty Office.

They said Ndiomu not only failed to “comprehend the genuine grievances of these agitators”, but has also become “disconnected” from the reality of effectively managing the programme.

These developments are behind the ex-agitators’ resolve to lead a protest, expressing their dissent by vowing to “dance naked in the streets of Abuja after the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum for Ndiomu’s resignation or replacement.”
