APC’s Cole appeals Fubara’s tribunal victory

Rivers State governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tonye Cole, has appealed the victory of Governor Siminalayi Fubara at the tribunal, saying the higher court will overturn the judgement.

The state APC spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, who confirmed the development in Port Harcourt yesterday, said the records of the appeal had been compiled and transmitted to the appropriate quarters with a suit number allocated to it.

He said:  “I can authoritatively confirm to the media today 24 October, 2023 that our governorship candidate, Pastor Tonye Cole, has entered an appeal against the ruling of the Governorship and National Assembly Tribunal for Rivers State.

“The records of this particular matter has been compiled and transmitted and the suit number allocated. The suit number is CA/ABJ/EP/Gov/RV/121/2023.”

“We do pray and hope that the Court of Appeal and indeed the judiciary will be able to serve justice to the people of Rivers State and to the memories of all those who were killed for their political belief for following and supporting the APC in Rivers State.

“We pray we will get justice from the court and as a law-abiding political party, we will always abide by the decisions of the court.”

Nwauju, however, faulted some of the grounds the tribunal relied on to dismiss the petition, saying they neither made sense nor complied with the provisions of the Electoral Act.

‘Govt will investigate alleged carting away of PHC equipment’

Cross River Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Ayuk, says the government will investigate alleged carting away of equipment from a Primary Health Care (PHC) facility at Bebuabie community.

He made this known in an interview yesterday in Calabar while reacting to a viral video showing an official of Obudu Local Government PHC trying to cart away equipment.

Ayuk said government would slam sanctions on anyone found culpable.

The suspected personnel, who is the coordinator of the PHC, had arrived Bebuabie Health Centre in a bus tagged Cross River State Government, Primary Health Care Development Agency 014C.

However, she met stiff resistance from youths of the community on the grounds of lack of information to the community leaders and PHC officials.

“We will investigate the matter, and if anyone is found guilty, he or she will be sanctioned in line with the extant rules of the civil service.

“I have directed my permanent secretary to liaise with her counterpart in the State Primary Health Care Development Agency to unravel the truth or otherwise of the allegation and report to government for further action.

“In a matter of days, I will visit Obudu and Obanliku to ascertain the ugly incidents that have made the rounds recently,” he said.

Ayuk said the Governor Bassey Otu administration would not condone acts inimical to the development and well-being of the people.

He hailed the people of Bebuabie community for resisting the heinous act.

He called on other communities in the state to imitate Bebuabie and take ownership of government infrastructures in their localities, as government alone could not guarantee security of its investments in their localities.

Ayuk warned anyone with similar sinister motives to back off, as government will wield the arm of the law on whoever tries to thwart its drive towards strengthening the health sector in the state.

Mbah woos Indonesian investors to Enugu

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has urged Indonesian businesses and investors to take advantage of the  investment opportunities, improved business environment and ample returns on investment (ROI) in the state.

The governments of Nigeria and Indonesia have pledged closer collaboration to boost trade and investment between both countries for their mutual prosperity.

Mbah made the call in a keynote address he delivered at the 2023 Nigerian-Indonesian Investment and Trade Forum, which opened in Jakarta, capital of Indonesia, on Monday.

Speaking at the event organised by the Nigerian-Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NICCI), in collaboration with Indonesian Trade Promotion Centre in Lagos, the governor, commending the growth of trade volume between Nigeria and Indonesia to $4.7 billion, said both countries could do much more, especially considering the opportunities offered by Enugu State.

He listed the investment opportunities in the state to include agriculture, mineral resources, logistics, aviation, tourism, real estate, mineral resources, ICT, among others.

“In the area of agriculture, Enugu is blessed with 100 per cent arable, fertile land with a high factor of productivity and good access to surface and subterranean water that makes all year-round agriculture possible.

“The state is climatically disposed to the production of key produce such as cassava, oil palm, cashew, spices of various types.

“These areas offer not only the opportunity for primary agricultural production, but also the opportunity to invest in industrial facilities to add value to these produce for local consumption as well as export.

“The state is also blessed with significant deposits of minerals. In the area of petroleum, Enugu State has proven deposits of oil, but more importantly has extensive deposits of natural gas.

“Other minerals within the state include coal, gold, kaolin, gypsum, clay and limestone, among others. This makes Enugu ideal not only for mining, but also for the siting of key industries,” Mbah said.

He said Enugu was open for business, adding that his administration’s target to grow the state’s economy from the current $4.4billion to a new level of $30billion was anchored on extensive private sector investment and utilisation of strong local and international partnerships.

“It is in view of this that we are here today reaching out to the government and business community in Indonesia to let you know in the clearest way possible that Enugu is open for business,” he stated.

The governor listed some of the key ongoing steps taken by his administration to improve investment and business climate of Enugu State to include expansion of security networks for improved security, a functional One Stop Centre for speedy processing of investment interests and needs, massive urban and rural infrastructural development, establishing about 300,000 hectares land bank for corporate farmers and special agro-processing zones, establishing of Free Zones, the recently signed Enugu State Electricity Law to create a free market electric power, and the effort to build a Tier 4 Hyper Scale Data Centre.

Others include far-reaching reforms towards stronger contract enforcement, ease of procurement of land titles, which will now take 72 hours.

‘We can’t be intimidated to withdraw our case’

Monarchs opposed to the amended Traditional Rulers Council (TRC) law in Akwa Ibom State have said they could not be intimidated to withdraw their case from court.

They said their recent meeting with Governor Umo Eno would not make them to change their position on the law.

The amended TRC law confers perpetual headship of the President-General of the Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers on the Ibibio, the majority ethnic group in the state, to the exclusion of other ethnic groups.

The traditional rulers from Oro, Annang and Obolo ethnic groups are insisting that the office must be rotatory.

Speaking with The Nation yesterday, the paramount ruler of Etim Ekpo and Vice- President, Afe Akuku Annang, HRM Akuku (Prof) Amanam Akpan Udo and the paramount ruler of Urueoffong Oruko, HRM Effiong Unanaowo, said only the court could settle the matter.

“Our opposition to the law still stands. The governor wants an out-of-court settlement, but we won’t be intimidated to withdraw the case from court because we stand by the position that the amended TRC law is discriminatory.”

“Since our last meeting with the governor, he has not called us to discuss the matter. But even if he does, we won’t shift ground. It is a constitutional matter, which only the court can settle,” he said.

The paramount ruler of Urueoffong Oruko, HRM Effiong Unanaowo, said the Oro could not be treated as slaves in Akwa Ibom State, hence would continue to kick against the law.

He added: “We are not slaves in Akwa Ibom State. We are coastal people and were the first to have had encounter with the Europeans when they arrived the shores of the state.

“The Oro are educated, enterprising and republican in nature. We can’t play a second or third fiddle to other tribes in this state.”

A sociopolitical group, Mkpat Enin Unity Network, has backed Governor Eno in his efforts to resolve the traditional crisis bedevilling the state.

It appealed to the traditional rulers, who instituted suits against the governor for signing the Amended Traditional Rulers bill into Law, to withdraw the cases and give dialogue a chance.

This was contained in a communique issued at the end of an emergency meeting of Mkpat Enin Unity Network in Uyo yesterday.

The communique praised the governor and House of Assembly for assenting to the bill, noting that the amendment would strengthen traditional institution.

East-West Road: Senate identifies lack of coordination by govt agencies

The Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the East-West Road says “there is complete lack of synergy between the Federal Ministry of Works, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Federal Emergency Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) and catchment states which the road passes through.”

Chairman of the Ad-hoc Committee, Senator Abdul Ningi, who led other members on a visit yesterday to Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu, said after the first leg of his committee’s assignment, they “are going to have a two-day public hearing on why the East-West Road has remained uncompleted.”

“We need to know who the contractors are? What have they received? So that people will not just collect money from the Federal Government and disappear,” Ningi said.

He said: “The East-West Road, which is supposed to represent fairness and justice of a major economic hub of the country, has not met that aspiration even by four succeeding presidents starting from Olusegun Obasanjo, Umaru Musa Yar ‘Adua, Goodluck Jonathan and Muhammadu Buhari.

“We have traversed the East-West Road from Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and now Cross River. It is disturbing what we have found in the course of this assignment, the inability of the overseeing agencies of government to come together and give the road the much needed attention.”

Added he: “I believe that something urgent needs to be done, including the fifth and final stage of the East-West Road, which is the Calabar-Oron end of the road. Yes, there is infrastructural deficit across the country, but what we witnessed was something else on that road.”

Ningi narrated the Senate committee members’ experience while passing through the Calabar-Itu federal highway linking Cross River State with Akwa Ibom State.

He said: “I have never seen and experienced what we saw on that road anywhere.

“Thousands of trucks stuck in traffic with little or no motion. If we didn’t have the military with us and even at that, we spent over six hours plus on a major highway.”

However, the committee chairman, who was accompanied by other members of the committee, including Senator Ikra Bilbis, the clerk of the committee; Foluke Ogunbayo, the Southsouth zonal director of Federal Ministry of Works; Clement Ogbuagu, an engineer; among others, had kind words for their host, Governor Otu, noting that the governor would bring his legislative experience to bear in the affairs of the state.

Otu hailed the Senate for its effort to enable the completion of the East-West Road and made a case for more funding for federal roads in the state, among other projects.

13% derivation fund: Court orders substituted service on Okowa, Uduaghan

Delta State High Court sitting in Warri, yesterday fixed January 29, 2024 for hearing in a suit compelling two ex-governors of the state, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan and Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, to account for the 13 per cent oil derivation funds that accrued to Delta State during their tenures.

Justice V. O. Agboje fixed the new date shortly after the mentioning of the case.

The case was instituted by members of the oil and gas-producing communities in the state, led by Chief Sheriff Mulade, against the two former governors.

Justice Agboje had during yesterday’s proceedings, ordered for a substituted service in the suit on ex-Governor Uduaghan, who was not represented in the court.

But Okowa, Delta State Government and DESOPADEC, who were all parties to the suit, were represented by state counsels.

Counsel for the plaintiff, Sofiyi Dickson, raised no objection to the new date and the order for substituted service on Uduaghan.

Aggrieved members of the oil and gas producing communities in Delta State recently staged a peaceful protest at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja, urging the anti-graft agency to investigate and recover their alleged missing and misappropriated funds back to Delta State Oil Producing Area Development Commission (DESOPADEC), to enable it carry out developmental projects.

Sheriff had approached the court seeking the interpretation of Section 162 (2) of the 1999 Constitution and Section 13 (1) of the DESOPADEC Law 2006 (as amended) 2007, 2015 and 2018.

The plaintiffs are praying the court to direct the ex-governors “to account for over N1.8tn of the 13 per cent oil derivation funds to oil producing communities of Delta State during their administration.”

Also, representatives of Itsekiri, Ndokwa and Isoko ethnic nationalities had, sometime in July this year, filed to join the suit seeking interpretation and accountability of 50 per cent of the 13 per cent oil derivation fund to Delta State under the two former governors.

Days of touting in Anambra over, says Soludo

Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo has declared war against touting, saying the days of touts were numbered.

He urged chairmen of markets to take responsibility of their domains, warning that any market where touts operated would be disbanded and chairmen removed.

Speaking yesterday in Onitsha during the launch of the Anambra Special Anti-Touting Squad, Prof. Soludo said restoring law and order would be difficult in an environment where lawlessness had become a culture.

He congratulated members of the squad, who had been found worthy and offered to serve, calling for commitment, passion and diligence.

He advised them to adhere to laid down standard and code of conduct guiding their operation.

The governor said members of the squad would collaborate with the armed forces, who had the primary responsibility to keep the state safe.

“We have told the youth to come out from their hideouts and bush. We shall help to rehabilitate and integrate them into the society to be useful to their families, communities, states and the country.

“While dealing with hoodlums on a larger scale, we will be dealing with touts in Onitsha greater area and Anambra State as a whole.

“We are fighting a war to bring back the soul of our society governed by law and order, not a society anyone does what he or she likes without recourse to law and order.

“Touts disturb customers who come from every nook and cranny of the country. But this journey is to rescue Onitsha as a commercial hub and Anambra State in general.

“Phone numbers shall be made available to Ndi Anambra to inform the government of any touting activity they notice in their areas.”

Soludo called on citizens to remember the campaign of “if you see something, you say something”

Homeland Affairs Commissioner Chief Chikodiri Anara described the launch of the Special Anti-Touting Squad as the beginning of the journey.

He assured the governor that positive changes would be noticed by December, as the men of the squad were well trained.

He warned hoodlums causing trouble in the state to leave, “as they will not find it comfortable to operate in the state, moving forward.”

  • ‘Why I sponsored Imo pilgrims to holy land’

‘Why I sponsored Imo pilgrims to holy land’

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has said he did not have any political intention in sponsoring the 1,200 Christian and Muslim pilgrims, who visited Jerusalem, Jordan, Mecca and Medina this year on pilgrimage. He said he was rather interested in the spiritual uplift of the beneficiaries, coupled with moral benefits and their relationship with God.

The governor spoke at Eze Imo Palace in Mbari, Owerri in his remarks during the interdenominational thanksgiving service organised by the pilgrims to appreciate him for the opportunity given to them to visit holy land at no cost to them.

He had paid for the airlift, feeding, accommodation and other expenses of 1,000 Christian pilgrims to Jordan and Jerusalem, as well as for 200 Muslims, who went to Mecca and Medina from Imo State.

The service turned out to be a moment of emotional outpour, as Uzodimma was treated with tales of how, through the exercise and his magnanimity, many beneficiaries, Christian and Muslim pilgrims, had the opportunity of either travelling by air for the first time in their lives as well as travelling outside the shores of Nigeria, also for the first time.

The pilgrims, most of who clamoured to see the sponsor, were excited to behold the governor in their midst and also happy over the opportunity to lavish prayers on him as the governorship election draws closer.

Although they reminded Uzodimma that they prayed for him, his family, his government, Imo State, among others at the holy land, the pilgrims also told him that the payback time, which is November 11, has come.

They were therefore happy to enter into a prayer of agreement, after which they endorsed the governor for re-election and resolved to vote massively for him.

The service was organised by the Imo State Christian Pilgrims Welfare.

Appreciating their prayers, Uzodimma told the congregation that he was not only humbled by their experience, but also that it gave him satisfaction having a better relationship with his creator. He urged them to do the same.

He said pilgrimage means a lot to the Christian and Muslim faiths, and appealed to Imo people to “first live together as a people irrespective of religious differences because all of us are of one God.”

Deputy Governor Placid Njoku thanked the governor for his Godly dispositions that made it possible for him to sponsor people from the state to the holy land.

The Chairman, Imo State Pilgrim Welfare Board, Rev Fr. Dr. Gilbert Alaribe, thanked the governor and God Almighty for a seamless exercise and journey mercies.

The Chairman, Imo State Muslim Council, Baba Sule, expressed gratitude to the governor for the gesture, saying it was the first time Imo State Government sponsored Muslims to the holy land.

Sule, the Sarikin Hausawa Imo State, prayed God to continue to “put the governor on the front seat and always put him above all his enemies.”

Other speakers included the Chief Judge of Imo State, Justice Theresa Chikeka; the Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State, Dr. Macdonald Ebere and HRH Eze Mathew Nwokoma.

Bishop Henry Mbamaonyeukwu and Bishop Akanabu, representing the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, CCN, ECWA an Anglican Church said the governor had sown bountifully, hence he would reap bountifully.
