Women protest amended Traditional Rulers Law

Akwa Ibom State women yesterday marched on the House of Assembly in Uyo, over the amended Traditional Rulers Law.

    They demanded its reversal.

The law nullified the hitherto rotational headship of the state’s Supreme Council of Traditional Rulers and reserved life headship (President General) for the Oku Ibom Ibibio, head king of the Ibibio, as the majority ethnic group in the state.

The women drawn from Annang, Oro and Obolo ethnic groups and numbering over 300, who arrived the Assembly complex at about 8am, barricaded the main gate.

They refused to vacate the area until the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olatoye Durosinmi, arrived on the scene and addressed them.

One of their leaders, Dr. Margaret Udofia, said: “I’m from Essien Udim Local Government, Annang tribe. We are here to protest that we are not second class citizens. They say the Oro are third class citizens. We came to tell them that Akwa Ibom is one.

“We have equal rights in Akwa Ibom, in Nigeria. There is no first class, no second or third class. We are all one. We don’t war, we don’t want tribalism. We want peace in Akwa Ibom, nobody should come and divide us.

“This is why we are here to tell them that the women of Annang, Oro, Obolo, all women of Akwa Ibom say we reject being second class or third class citizens. We know the House will sit today. We want the members to hear our cry so it will not affect our children in future. We want that position to remain.”

Another protester and a retired school head teacher from the Annang axis, Mrs. Iboette, said: “The obnoxious law that says only one tribe can be leader is what we are here to kick against. We are against that law the House of Assembly passed.

“It is dividing the state. This is a peaceful state. We can never allow that law to win. We don’t want it. We want the position to be rotational.”

Addressing the women, CP Durosinmi appealed to them to go back to their homes and take care of their husbands and children.

He assured them that their grievances would be communicated to the appropriate quarters.

As tension escalates over the new law, Governor Umo Eno, who sent the Executive Bill that brought about the law, has absolved himself of any blame in the matter.

He said: “The law that has just been passed by the House of Assembly is not my law. The paramount rulers of this state sat. I was at that meeting and I did not say anything. They agreed on what that law is. They themselves agreed. I said it yesterday and I am saying it today on this altar.

“If any paramount ruler that was there, let the paramount ruler prove that he uttered a voice. The only paramount ruler that raised a voice and said something to add was the paramount ruler of Itu. No paramount ruler, whether Ibibio, Annang or Oron, none of them said anything. All I did was to implement their decision. You couldn’t implement a law without going through the House of Assembly.

“If they feel that is no more their position, it is a simple thing. They are our fathers. It is to call the governor and say, please, what we did, we did not understand. This is what we now think we should do. It has nothing to do with ethnicity. It has nothing to do with favouring one tribe over the other.

“I will never have sided one tribe over another because I belong to Jesus. We all belong to one kingdom and it is the kingdom of God. Anyone who knows me knows I am a barracks boy. I grew up in the barracks and in the barracks there is no room for ethnicity.”

“It will be recalled that Governor Soludo had during his visits to Premier Primary School, Odume Obosi and Ado Girls Secondary School, Onitsha, announced that in line with the Solution Free Education Policy, no child from Early Childhood Education and Development up to Junior Secondary School (JSS 3) is required to pay any fee whatsoever.”

Ogbuku, Jonathan’s wife urge Niger Delta youths to embrace peace

The Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku and former First Lady Patience Jonathan have called on youths in the region to embrace entrepreneurship and peace for sustainable development.

The duo spoke during the Ogbia Youth Summit in Ogbia, Bayelsa State.

A statement signed yesterday by the NDDC Director, Corporate Affairs, Dr. Pius Ughakpoteni, said Ogbuku in his keynote address at the summit insisted that the youth must engage in meaningful ventures for the region to achieve sustainable development and peace.

He appealed to them to key into the commission’s Holistic Opportunity Projects of Engagement (HOPE) designed by the commission to identify their interest for skill training.

Advising the youth to eschew cultism, drug abuse, thuggery and other vices, Ogbuku lauded their vision to set up a youth hub and pledged to support the initiative.

He said: “As Ogbia people, we should jettison individual interests for the collective interest of the people. “What was handed to us by our founding fathers is the identity of an Ogbia man. Whatever achievement we must have accomplished today is the result of the legacies established by the late Melford Okilo and other great leaders. These legacies made us strive for greatness.”

“It will be a bigger challenge for me if I can’t bring peace and development to Ogbia people. If we collaborate, we can partner and share ideas for success.”

Ogbuku noted that focus on human capacity building was in line with the Renewed Hope agenda of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

Dame Jonathan, who represented her husband, ex- President Jonathan, as the special guest of honour, told the youth to avoid drug abuse because of its effect.

She said peace and unity were needed to ensure sustainable development in Ogbia community and elsewhere in the Niger Delta.

The President of Ogbia Youths, Amb. Johnny Jonathan, said the programme was to chart a new course in human capacity development among youths.

Jonathan, who hailed Ogbuku for supporting youth programmes, stressed the need to educate young people on the importance of peace as a catalyst to economic and infrastructural development.

“The system we are operating now will not have any room to discriminate because the system does not know you, your face or where you come from,” he said, adding that arrangements were in place to solve the challenges a few genuine ones might be having.

The governor warned those who had been blackmailing the government on allegation of not being paid their salaries to desist and say the truth or else government would be forced to publish their names and their crime against the state.

Uzodimma thanked the priests for appreciating the things his government had done so far.

“It is not good to be worshiping God in an uncompleted building while we are living in completed houses, well furnished,” he said.

To assist the parish in the completion of the church building so that it will be dedicated before the end of his second tenure, Governor Uzodimma donated N30million to the project.

Sir Ejiogu thanked the governor and all that came to celebrate with him. He commended his Emekuku community for always supporting him and what he believed in.

The Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. John Anyaegbulem, hailed the governor for the infrastructural revolution going on in the state, especially the building of Ekemele, Okigwe road, Orlu road, dredging of Urashi river “and all the good projects that are going on across the state.”

Southeast APC youths to Tinubu: we need more ministers

A group, Southeast APC Young Progressives Forum, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to consider appointing additional ministers from the Southeast.

It implored the President to give the zone at least two additional ministers.

Addressing a news conference yesterday in Awka, the National Convener of the body, Pascal Candle, said the call was necessary to correct the imbalance on the ministerial list.

He said: “Following the latest ministerial nominations from other zones, we wish to cry unto Mr. President to find a way to remedy this glaring anomaly.

“We appeal that at least two additional ministers need to be appointed from the Southeast.”

Appreciating President Tinubu for incorporating youths into his government, the group said the zone had a pool of highly qualified young professionals with capacity to occupy the position of a minister for the sake of balance and equity.

“With the nomination of ministers of Youth Development from Kwara and Ondo states, Southeast with five states remain the only zone among the six zones without an additional minister. In fact, we have only five ministers without any zonal representation.

“We are therefore hopeful and praying that Mr. President will listen to our plea of nominating an extra minister for the Southeast, to give the progressives in the zone more sense of belonging and most importantly to bring vitality to the Ministry of Youths,” the group said.
