  • Why Southsouth deserved Senate president, by Coalition

Why Southsouth deserved Senate president, by Coalition

Zoning the Senate President to the Southsouth remains the best compensation to the people of the region, a group, Coalition For Good Governance and Economic Justice in Africa in partnership with the Conveners for Southsouth Senate Presidency said yesterday.

The Coalition said the agitation is  in view of the volume of votes the All Progressives Congress (APC), President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu received in the just concluded Presidential election.

At a  news conference organised by the Country Director of the Coalition, at the former Sheraton Hotel now Abuja Continental,  Abuja, Prince John Mayaki said with the emergence of the same-faith presidential pairing of male members of the Southwest and North Eastern parts, there is a need to balance the political process leading to the (s)election of important national office holders.

Mayaki said:: ” The history of political power distribution in Nigeria and present dynamics justify the ceding of the Senate Presidency to a Christian from the Southsouth geo-political zone.

” It is perhaps the most effective way to ensure a satisfactory inclusion of the hugely important region in the leadership of the country; a development certain to calm agitations in the region and help the country avoid possible uprising that may threaten its economy, especially as it is about to veer into uncharted waters with the planned removal of the oil subsidy.

” Our stand is based on Nigeria’s history and the need for inclusive leadership as a purveyor to peace and stability in a country as diverse as polarized as Nigeria”, he noted

The Convener of the Southsouth Senate Presidency, Prince Kassim Afegbua explained that they are appealing to the party to in the interest of ethnic, regional and religious balance cede the Senate Presidency to the Southsouth.

He stressed  that the Southsouth geopolitical zone occupies a very formidable and remarkable consideration as the treasure base of the country, noting that it should be accorded special recognition to compensate for all her sacrifices thus far, adding that what the Southsouth region has contributed to the nation no other region has done that hence the need to ensure the next Senate president emerges from the zone.

Afegbua said: ” With the foregoing, it would be an act of injustice to accord privilege to the Southeast over the Southsouth for the Senate Presidency. It would amount to the party giving one of its biggest prizes to a geopolitical zone that contributed the least to its victory. The import of this to members in the future would be that a sense of entitlement and heavy investments in the emotional appeal is all a region needs to score big in the post-election scramble for power, not results at the polls. This is damaging for any party with future plans to maintain its hold on power.

” It is clear that going by Nigeria’s history, its constitutional and moral obligation to ensure social justice and equitable representation of the sociocultural groups and geo-political zones that make up the country, as well as recent political perks and privileges enjoyed by each region; the most deserving region for the Senate Presidency is the Southsouth geo-political zone. To open his administration on a positive and optimistic note, the President-elect must lead the party in this direction.

” In this dispensation, under the prevailing circumstances, we strongly believe that the incoming President,  Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the APC can only satisfy the necessary need to balance ethnic, regional, and religious concerns by ceding the Senate Presidency and Speakership to other religions. In light of this, we appeal to the leadership of the ruling party, the APC, and the President-elect to cede the Senate President to the South-South geopolitical zone.

” The argument as to why it must be a member credibly subscribed to other faith is self-evident and requires no elaborate explanation or defence. With the incoming President and Vice President both Muslims in a country with a compelling argument for balancing of all the factors and forces, it will only be reasonable and rational to allow other religions to occupy the Senate President and Speakership positions. The interest of this group is for the Senate President to be zoned to the Southsouth.

” The Southsouth geopolitical zone occupies a very formidable and remarkable consideration as the treasure base of the country that ought to be accorded special recognition to compensate for all her sacrifices thus far. The economic importance of the zone and its strategic relevance to stabilising the politics of the nation, cannot be over-emphasised. In the last election, the ruling party, the APC, was able to make serious in-roads into the zone that has been under the threshold of the opposition PDP. Aside from winning Rivers State, the APC came second in the other five states, thus simplifying the requirement needed by the Presidential candidate to defeat his opponents.

” While many fair-minded actors agree in principle that the Senate Presidency must return to the South given the fact that the incumbent is from the North, similar to the Vice President-elect; and with the Southwest out of the contest given that it is the home of the President-elect, there are those who have made a case for the Southeast based on the region’s perpetual cry of marginalization and the need to balance the power equation.

” But what the Southeast desires is the presidency of the country, anything short of that is a slap on their face, moreso that the zone had occupied the seat of senate president on five occasions, for eight years, and deputy senate president position for 12 years, in the last 24 years of our fledgling democracy. In the minds of those who make the argument, to pacify the South is to indulge the Southeast and to heed its call for a sense of belonging”, he said.

The body reiterated that in the last 24 years, the Southeast  has had a fair share of the Senate president and Deputy which automatically rule them out of the equation, noting that for equity and justice, the Southsouth  is in a better position to take up the task of presiding over the 10th National Assembly.

He said: ” Let me re-emphasise that in the last 24 years, the Southeast has enjoyed the unique privilege of producing the Senate President on five different occasions. Senators Enwerem, Okadigbo, Wabara, Anyim, and Nnamani, all of whom held sway as the Presidents of the Senate in the present fourth republic are all from the Southeast. If you include the additional stretch of 12 years during which the Southeast also held the Deputy Senate President position, that amounts to a near total control of that arm of government, and a more than earned political compensation.

” Moreover, considering that the contributions of each region to the victory of the ruling party is also a significant factor in the power-sharing tussle, as there would be no power to share without electoral triumph; it is just as important to scrutinize the numbers the Southeast gave to the APC in the presidential election.

” Indeed, whilst Senators from the region who are angling for the Senate President position managed to secure convincing victory in their various senatorial districts, with some of them pulling thousands of votes, the President-elect was only able to claim a negligible figure, even though both contests, (the Senatorial and Presidential) held on the same day and followed the same process, it exposes a sore lack of belief in the President-elect and a most damaging act of self-preservation.

” Contrary to this, the Southsouth region stood firm and contributed a significant percentage of votes to the President-elect’s victory. The APC came first in Rivers State and claimed over 45% of the total number of votes in the other five states. This is despite the historic status of the region as an opposition stronghold. The members of the party from the Southsouth displayed a high sense of duty and loyalty to the party, canvassing votes not just for their individual positions but equally for the President-elect. Indeed, without their outstanding show of belief, the President-elect may have well faltered in achieving the mandatory 25% spread in the two-thirds of states of the federation”, he noted.

‘Amaechi still in charge of Rivers APC’

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Chukwuemeka Eze, has said former Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi remains the leader of the party in the state.

Eze, in a statement in Port Harcourt, described reports that the APC was fragmented into factions, especially after the general election, as not wholly true.

He said it was tragic folly for another APC chieftain, Mr. Tony Okocha, to parade himself as the current leader of the party in Rivers.

The party chief said Okocha did not worth the media hullabaloos over his claim as leader of the Rivers APC, describing such claims as needless.

On the allegation of anti-party activities against Amaechi, Eze said such report only existed in the figment of the imagination of the schemers, who were only working to curry relevance in the camp of President-elect Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ikpeazu to president-elect: form inclusive government

Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has a piece of advice for President-elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu – he should run an all-inclusive government to give every Nigerian the right to contribute their quota.

The governor said every citizen, irrespective of tribe, religion and status, should be given the opportunity to contribute towards the development of the nation.

  • Why I asked Tribunal to disqualify Delta State Governor-elect Oborevwori, Omo-Agege, two others – SDP Guber candidate, Gbagi

Why I asked Tribunal to disqualify Delta State Governor-elect Oborevwori, Omo-Agege, two others – SDP Guber candidate, Gbagi

The Governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Delta State, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi, on Tuesday revealed why he waited till after the Governorship election before asking the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal to disqualify his counterparts from other political parties over irregularities in some of their documents before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Gbagi came 5th in the Delta State gubernatorial election conducted on March 18, 2023 by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

The candidates of other political parties he asked the tribunal disqualify include the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who is the Governor-elect of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, All Progressives Congress (APC), Ovie Omo-Agege, Labour Party (LP), Ken Pela and All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Great Ovedje Ogboru over non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

Gbagi who spoke at a press conference in Abuja, said having discovered deficiencies in the documents, he did not bother to file a pre-election case because he lacked the locus standi to do so since he was not a member of the respective political parties concerned.

He claimed that since the four candidates who came tops during the Governorship poll in Delta State were not ‘qualified’ to contest the election in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, the Tribunal should declare him as the duly elected governor of the state.

Gbagi asked the Election Petition Tribunal to disqualify the Governor-elect of Delta State Sheriff Oborevwori, over alleged falsified Statutory Declaration of Age, among others.

He said it was the right time to bring up the matter as records and experience have shown that pre-election cases most times do not go far.

“Go back to the Electoral Act, I could not have raised an objection on issue of a candidate of a party that I am not a member.

“Every one who went to pre-election matter, none of them went any where, this is the appropriate time, to raise this issue.

“I am a candidate, and I am saying, we are candidates of the election, but these people who are candidates ought not to be candidates and the tribunal is the appropriate place.”

The SDP Guber candidate, in the petition urged the tribunal to “declare null, void and of no effect whatsoever” the Certificate of Return issued to the candidate of PDP, Oborevwori, as winner of the governorship election in Delta state and issue another one to him as as duly qualified and elected governor.

“For those of us, who contested, and participated, I am the only one on the list that is qualified.

“The election has been held, marks were allocated to us, my prayer is that they were not qualified, and I should be declared as the winner of the election because I am the only qualified candidate in the first instance,” Gbagi said.

In a Certified True Copy of his petition to the Election Tribunal with No. EPT/DL/Gov/2/2023 Gbagi claimed that Oborevwori falsified Declaration of Age/Affidavit in support of personal particulars in Form C.F. 001 (Affidavit in Support of Personal Particulars of Persons Seeking Election to the Office/Membership of State House of Assembly) Dated 24th October 2018, and Form EC9 (Affidavit in Support of Personal Particulars) Dated 30th Day of June 2022 to INEC.

He stated that the Governor-elect’s Statutory Declaration of Age/Affidavit deposed to in 2022 contains a different age contrary to what is contained in his West African Senior School Certificate (WASSC) dated June 1999 with Certificate Number 384793.

He accused Oborevwori of lying under oath that he does not have Primary School Certificate, Secondary School Certificate, and university degree, whereas, in 2018, he exhibited same with his Form C. F. 001.

He added that the suit challenging Oborevwori’s qualification to contest the Governorship Election of Delta State held on 18th day of March 2023 was filed and decided at the Federal High Court, Asaba based on alleged forged credentials.

Gbagi posited that doing so was contrary to the principle laid down by the Supreme Court in Saleh v. Abah, (2017) 12 (NWLR) PT. 1578 AT P. 100.

He also claimed that the Deputy Governor-elect, Monday Onyeme, was allegedly dismissed from the employment of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) but failed to disclose the fact of his dismissal in his affidavit Form EC9 deposed to on 29th day of June 2022.

Gbagi, in the 79-page petition, also sought the disqualification of the candidates of the All Progressives Congress, Ovie Omo-Agege, Labour Party, Ken Pela and All Progressives Grand Alliance, Great Ovedje Ogboru over non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022.

Gbagi, a former Minister of Education, also hinged his call for the disqualification of other Governorship candidates on the various degrees of electoral malpractice at the march 18 poll in Delta.

He listed the alleged malpractices to include: over voting and vote buying induced by the candidates.

He said there were situations where the total number of votes recorded and allotted were more than the Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) collected by voters and exceeded the number of registered voters in the polling unit.

Other electoral infractions, according to him, included alteration of some results sheets which did not reflect on the duplicate copies given to party agents, mutilation of form EC8As, polling units without corresponding voting points result sheets, over and under balloting, among others.

  • Obidients: which path, civility or toxicity?

Obidients: which path, civility or toxicity?

    By Amaka Ogunjobi

“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, but on building the new” – Socrates

The 2023 general elections have come and gone, leaving in its wake – ethnic profiling, tribal bigotry, sectionalism, religious fanaticism and a more divided Nigeria than we have witnessed since the civil war. The aforementioned direct consequences of the failings of the recently conducted elections have long existed with us as a people. However many Nigerians had hoped that somehow, the 2023 elections would heal a society that is fragmented along many lines – sadly such hopes were dashed and old wounds reopened.

The Mahmood Yakubu led Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) cannot be exonerated in any way from the current mood of the nation. The commission reneged on its promise of making the elections technology driven and uploading of results directly to its viewer portal (IREV) through the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). This failure by INEC has become the foundation for the verbal altercations & growing mistrust amongst people that have lived together for years. The level of toxicity the 2023 elections has generated far supersedes any we have witnessed as a nation. People are now cautious about speaking their truths and sharing their opinions on national issues without being seen as ethnically, religiously and politically contentious.

At the centre of this accusation of toxicity are the supporters of His Excellency Peter Obi known as the Obidients who have been alleged to venomously clamp down on any opinion that does not conform with their ideology of a better Nigeria. Factually, are the Obidients toxic? Are they being misunderstood or plainly being misrepresented? Are people just trying to demarket & delegitimise the Obidient movement? Some commentators have opined that Obidients are a representation of frustrated Nigerians who are tired of the country’s systematic failure and the old order while yet another group see them as a new generation of disrespectful individuals that are lacking in civility and good manners.

The “Obidients” cannot be said to be alone in this new wave of toxicity threatening to consume us all. The ruling APC is as guilty (if not more) of this toxic attitude that Obidients, who in most cases, are regarded as the sponsors of such verbal attacks – since their voices are loudest in the room, are accused of.

Whichever camp is orchestrating these attacks, one thing is certain; if this trend of vicious verbal attacks are not quickly addressed by leaders of the various political parties and their supporters called to order, the judgement of the electoral petition tribunal (whichever camp it favours), will only add to the already tense situation in the country. Nigeria appears to be few utterances and actions away from witnessing the level of electoral violence it did in 2011 when over 1,000 people lost their lives in the North. Only that this time, the violence will not be limited to Northern Nigeria alone.

It has become obvious that supporters of political parties have enormous power in their hands, however power without control and constraint lead to destruction. Genius is found in the management of insanity – Dele Farotimi

His Excellency Peter Obi believes he won the 2023 presidential election and has committed himself to following peaceful and lawful means under the constitution in reclaiming the mandate. The best thing Obidients can do now is to channel their energy into holding the government accountable and setting goals for the incoming administration instead of setting the country ablaze with ethnocentrism and bigotry that will take us nowhere. Accountability starts with each and every one of us, irrespective of the political party we belong to or the Presidential candidate we support. Let’s all follow the path of civility and peace in our engagements, online and offline

  • Nigerians owe military, Irabor gratitude over peaceful Easter celebrations – Coalition

Nigerians owe military, Irabor gratitude over peaceful Easter celebrations – Coalition

The National Coalition for Peace in Nigeria (NCPN) has said the Nigerian Armed Forces led by Gen Lucky Irabor deserve commendation over the peaceful Easter celebrations across the country as well as the violent-free general elections.

The Coalition said the tireless efforts of troops and other security agents haven’t gone unnoticed in the highly harmonious festivity.

Speaking at a briefing in Abuja, national president of the coalition Rev. Ndubuisi Nwogu said under Irabor,  the military has displayed a high sense of professionalism and loyalty to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria when it most mattered.

Describing the Defence Chief as a charismatic leader, Nwogu said Irabor has introduced laudable reforms that culminated in the peace and tranquillity enjoyed across the country today.

The cleric said in the past, the military was accused of partisanship and lack of professionalism in discharging their duties.

However, with Irabor at the saddle, he said troops have displayed an all-new level of patriotism, dedication, and service to the nation.

He said: “It gives me great pleasure to address this press conference in commendation of the efforts of the Armed Forces and other security agencies in maintaining law and order during and after the just concluded general elections across the country.

“It is a statement of the fact that the tension and apprehensions over the fate of the country in the keenly contested elections were palpable. So much so that we feared for the worse. But we thank God for his mercies upon Nigeria.

“The National Coalition for Peace in Nigeria recognizes the efforts of critical stakeholders in ensuring that the enemies of Nigeria planned to use the apprehensions about the elections to ignite an ethnoreligious war to fulfill their long-time desire to destabilize and disintegrate the country.

“The unity of Nigeria remains sacrosanct, and this indeed has been our watchword hence the numerous advocacies to individuals, groups and religious and ethnic associations across the country. The desire for a united Nigeria continued to dominate the national discourse, which is attainable through the efforts of stakeholders, including the Nigerian Military and other sister security agencies.

“We appreciate the leadership strides of the Chief of Defence Staff, General LEO Irabor, under whose leadership the Nigerian Military displayed a high sense of professionalism and loyalty to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria when it matters the most. The recent seamless collaboration amongst the security agencies is a testament to one of the leadership qualities of General LEO Irabor since he assumed office as the Chief of Defence Staff.

“As an organization championing peace in Nigeria, we have interacted with the leadership of the Nigerian Military on numerous occasions, and the pledge and commitment to preserving the country’s territorial integrity have remained unflinching.

“This much was exhibited before, during, and after the general elections where the security agencies proved to be the bastion of our nascent democracy. That the country is experiencing peace and tranquillity is a joyous testimony of the apolitical and professional conduct of the security agencies that discerning bodies and groups must commend.

Worthy of mention is the Nigerian Military’s stance to defend the people and democracy in Nigeria. We also appreciate that the Armed Forces leadership led by General LEO Irabor have proven to be a distinct and unique set of officers whose loyalty to Nigeria cannot be doubted.

“This is unlike when the Military was accused of partisanship and lack of professionalism in discharging their constitutionally recognized role and duties. General LEO Irabor could be christened as the pearl of defence in the country. He is a charismatic leader that has introduced laudable reforms in the Armed Forces that culminated in the peace and tranquillity enjoyed across the country today. ”

The Coalition urged the CDS and his troops not to rest their oars until all the security challenges in the country are nipped in the bud towards achieving the Nigerian of our dreams, where peace and harmony reign supreme.

“Our commendation also goes to the President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari, for enabling our security agencies to perform optimally in the discharge of their duties,” Garba added.

“President Muhammadu Buhari remains one of the notable leaders this country has produced. It reinforces the narrative that there will surely be a way when there is a will.

“We commend the Nigerian Military and other security agencies’ tireless efforts to maintain peace and tranquillity. As a group, we pledge our continued and unflinching support to the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
