A slain female police sergeant, Chinyere Obilor, who was killed by gunmen in Imo State, has been buried amidst tears.

She was laid to rest on Friday at her country home, Mgbidi.

Chinyere was killed in an exchange of crossfire when armed hoodlums ambushed them at Ihitte junction in the Ngor Okpala Local Government Area of the state on Owerri- Aba Road while on a duty on January 26.

The female cop was attached to the Highway Patrol team of the state police command.

It was learnt that the criminals operated in a commercial vehicle known as Busimo.

A source had said that the vehicle which was abandoned by the attackers was later recovered by the police.

Friends and relatives wept uncontrollably when the ambulance conveying her lifeless body arrived her village at Mgbidi for burial.

Many of her colleagues paid glowing tributes to her as many described her as a hard working police officer.

One of her colleagues said, “The woman was dedicated to her duties. She was killed in a gun battle when criminals ambushed them at Ihitte junction on Owerri- Aba Road. She was from Mgbidi in Imo. A mother of four children who was very cheerful is gone. This is so painful.”

  • Edo REC: Let’s deepen Nigeria’s democracy

Edo REC: Let’s deepen Nigeria’s democracy

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo State, Mr. Obo Effanga, yesterday called on Nigerians that it was time to deepen the nation’s democracy.

He reiterated that the February 25 and March 18 this year’s general elections were culmination of a series of activities in the last few years, to engender citizen’s participation in determining who their leaders were, while insisting that to a large extent, INEC delivered on it, the commission’s human imperfections and limitations notwithstanding.

Effanga spoke in Benin at the presentation of certificates of return to the 21 of 24 members-elect of Edo House of Assembly.

INEC on March 21 declared as inconclusive, the March 18 Edo House of Assembly election in Egor, Oredo East and Ovia Southwest constituencies.

The commission’s Head of Voter Education and Publicity in Edo, Mr. Timidi Wariowei, then disclosed that the governing People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the state won twelve of the 24 seats, while the main opposition All Progressives Congress’ (APC’s) candidates emerged victorious in eight constituencies, with Labour Party (LP) winning one seat.

In the House of Representatives’ election, APC won five of nine seats, LP had two seats, while PDP won one seat, with APC winning two senatorial seats, while LP had one senatorial seat.

INEC fixed April 15 for the outstanding election in Orhionmwon/Uhunmwonde federal constituency of Edo, and the House of Assembly poll in Egor, Oredo East and Ovia Southwest constituencies, which were declared inconclusive by the electoral commission.

There was no governorship election in Edo state on March 18, until September 2024, as the second term of Governor Godwin Obaseki of PDP would expire on November 12 next year.

The REC of INEC in Edo said: “Much has been said about Nigeria’s continued stride down the democracy alley these past 24 years. No doubt it has sometimes been turbulent, if not topsy turvy, rather than a smooth walk or ride. But there have been some good times and experiences along this journey, especially the uninterrupted nature of this very trip of nearly 24 years.

“The implication is that in the last two election cycles (2019 and 2023), the country has recorded a large number of voters, whose life experiences are happily limited only to a government by elected representatives, which is what democracy represents. Thus, democracy has become a norm in our country. That in itself is something to celebrate and build upon.

“How do we build upon this democracy? The easiest way is to expand the number of democrats within our democracy, and that includes the number of democrats within the political parties. Sadly, there are too few democrats within the political class today. The building block for democracy is not only in the large number of participants, but ensuring that these participants fully understand and imbibe the principles of democracy. Some of these principles are citizen participation, equality, transparency, accountability, political tolerance and checks and balances.”

Effanga also stated that participation of citizens in democracy would go beyond participation in the electoral process to their involvement in the process of governance, stressing that they must be consulted regularly by those in government, and their interests paramount when policies and laws were made.

He said: “Even in their (citizens’) participation in the electoral process, their security and safety must be guaranteed. That is why it is reprehensible when political actors deploy violence and intimidation during elections, in order to achieve their ambitions.

“It is important to charge the members-elect into the state’s House of Assembly to understand that when they sit at the table of governance, they are there, not in their personal capacities, but as representatives of their entire constituencies, with all the diversities such as gender, age, ethnicity, religion and political leanings therein. This is how to recognise and practise the principle of equality of all.

Enugu chamber tasks CBN on bank deposits protection

The Enugu Chamber of Commerce, Industries Mines and Agriculture, (ECCIMA) has tasked the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to use its regulatory framework to make the work of Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC) much easier, by ensuring that the chances of bank failures are reduced to the barest minimum.

President of the chamber, Barr. Jasper Nduagwuike, who gave the task at the NDIC’s outing at the 34th Enugu International Trade Fair, noted that the role of the NDIC in stabilising the financial sector is very key and noteworthy.

According to Nduagwuike, “NDIC remains a life-line back-up for Nigerian teeming banking publics who had hitherto suffered in the past prior to the establishment of NDIC by losing all their deposits whenever crisis occurred in the banking sector, with banks closing their doors against depositors,” Nduagwuike stated.

The ECCIMA President commended the CBN and NDIC as key players in the financial sector, for the stability and near tranquility in the banking/financial sector through their regulatory frameworks, despite challenges being experienced in Nigeria economic cycle.

The Managing Director/ Chief Executive of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, Bello Hassan told members of the public, particularly the teeming populace in the Medium, Small, and Micro Enterprise, (MSME) sector, and others in the informal segment of the economy that the safest, smartest, and most prudent place to keep money is in the formal banking system because the NDIC protects bank deposits.

Enugu seals hotel where INEC issued certificates of return over structural defect

The Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA), has sealed the hall of Bon Platinum hotel where the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) issued certificates of return to the Enugu State Governor-Elect, Peter Mbah and his deputy, Ifeanyi Ossai.

The development followed an alleged structural defect of the double decker hall which caused a big bang during the issuance of the certificates of return to the election winners on Thursday and which caused pandemonium and made the recipients, the commissioner of police, the INEC staff and numerous others to scamper for safety.

Though the process of the issuance was later completed there, midway through the presentation, there was a loud bang in the hall which sent the people scampering out of the hall, causing a stampede.

Consequently, the ECTDA on Friday went for an inspection on the facility and said it discovered the building had no approved plan, together with another upcoming structure in the hotel.

Disclosing reason for its decision on the building, Chairman of Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority, Dr. Josef Onoh said that management of the hotel was impatient with the agency to conclude its investigation of the facility and was bent on holding another function on the distressed hall by Saturday without resolving the problem with the building.

Onoh said: “The hall doesn’t have an approval but the hotel has and there was a structural band on the hall yesterday (Thursday) when INEC was issuing certificates of return which made everybody scatter because they thought the building was going to collapse.

“So we went there today for inspection and we are now sealing the place, including another building being developed at the back. The proprietor of the hotel is not ready to exercise patience for the Nigeria Society of Engineers to come for their own inspection, but is asking us to allow her to host a wedding there tomorrow and I wonder how much she collected for the event that the venue cannot be relocated. So we have sealed the hall.”

  • ‘Orji Uzor as Senate President will balance power shift’

‘Orji Uzor as Senate President will balance power shift’

The Progressive Youth Group has endorsed former Abia Governor Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s aspiration to emerge as Senate president in the 10th National Assembly.

It said his emergence will balance the shift of power and ethnic considerations.

In a communique after a stakeholder’s meeting in Abuja, the convener of the group, Mr. Idris Jibril, maintained that there is a need for the youths to really play an active, deliberate and strategic role in shaping what happens after the presidential election.

According to him: “In view of the rhetoric around the candidacy of the APC president-elect and his running mate, Kashim Shettima, there is a need to balance the shift of power across ethnic and religious lines. Being from the South-East extraction, the emergence of Senator Orji Uzor Kalu will douse the tension in the region.

“The country is already stretched across ethnic and religious lines. There are need for us to look at our structure as a country and then chart a course that will intimate every ethnic group into the one Nigeria slogan.”

Idris further explained Orji’s experience as Abia Governor for eight years, his experience in the private sector and legislative experiences over the last four years have put him in a prime position to emerge.

“In terms of capacity and track record, he stands out better than others. Even while the All-Progressive Congress (APC) lost the presidential election in his state, Sen Orji overwhelmingly won his senatorial district seat.

”That shows acceptability. So instead of agitating, he will be able to bring agitators from the Southeast to the table to discuss nation building.” he said.

  • Election cash tears Imo PDP apart

Election cash tears Imo PDP apart

The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo State has deepened, following an alleged mismanagement of N1.4 billion election funds released for disbursement during the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

The money was said to have been released by the National Presidential Election Management Committee to the PCC Chairman in Imo State.

Sources close to the party told The Nation yesterday that the released funds were not disbursed as directed, in line with the template approved and sent to the PCC leaders in the state.

The funds have deepened the crisis in the party, as its chieftains are on each other’s throat threatening to drag the PCC committee to court.

The source attributed the failure of PDP in the state during the elections to the embezzled funds, which the source said starved PDP members and supporters funds to enable them deliver the party candidates.

Reacting, National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, accused a former governor of starving the party of the funds released by the National Presidential Election Management Committee to him as the PCC chairman.

Anyanwu said the primary objectives of” “those he described as” saboteurs” during the just concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections were to starve the party and its members of funds earlier approved and released as election intervention funds.

He regretted that all entreaties, appeals and convictions to release the funds approved to appropriate authorities, in line with the national template, “to enable them deliver candidates of our party, was flagrantly ignored, noting that “the reason these saboteurs carried out the broad daylight onslaught against the party was to frustrate PDP by ensuring that its candidates lose the election.”

  • Lawyer urges youths to shun electoral violence

Lawyer urges youths to shun electoral violence

A lawyer based in Warri, Delta State, Mr. Raymond Okerefe, has urged Niger Delta youths to steer clear of electoral violence, to avoid being caught up in its dire consequences.

Okerefe, who spoke last weekend during a one-day workshop against electoral violence ahead of Saturday’s Governorship and House of Assembly polls, said election was an exercise to choose the best candidate from a pool of many others seeking electoral office to serve the people and not a battle for supremacy.

The workshop with the theme: ‘Say no to electoral violence’, was organised by a non-governmental organisation (NGO), Pageant and Events Development Initiative, with assistance from the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), for youths.

Similar workshops had been held in other states in the Niger Delta, particularly in Rivers, Imo, Akwa Ibom, among others, to highlight to the youth, the danger of violence in elections and the need to desist from it.

Addressing the participants, Okerefe, the lead resource person at the conference, said: “The essence of elections is to choose a candidate from a pool of candidates vying for an office to represent the people and not a battle of supremacy.”

He admitted challenges in the electioneering process in Nigeria, noting that it fell below expectations.

The lawyer reminded the participants of the legal, economic and emotional implications of electoral violence, stressing the need for them to avoid being used by desperate politicians to perpetrate violence against their own people during elections.

The state Director of NDDC, Stephen Ogheweare, advised youths to take decisions that would affect their future positively.

Spokesman for the NGO Robinson Akpu hailed NDDC for its support and passion in changing the negative narrative of the region and its youths in elections.

He encouraged the youth to seek to acquire skills that would empower them, as well as chart a pathway out of idleness.

The on-air personality, who is also a voice trainer, reminded the participants of the need to focus on developing their potential.

EEDC introduces product to clear customers’ outstanding arrears

Enugu Electricity Distribution Company PLC (EEDC) has introduced a new product called Accelerated Settlement of Arrears Project (ASAP), designed to assist its customers with outstanding arrears to clear them, while enjoying attractive discount.

The Head, Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, who disclosed this in a statement in Enugu yesterday, said the initiative was introduced to relieve the customers of debt burden, considering the challenging economic situation in the country.

He said the uniqueness of the product was that it offered graded discount, ranging from 25 per cent (for one-time payment), 20 per cent (for three months payment by instalment) and 35 per cent (for debts of five years and above), and appealed to only Non-Maximum Demand (NMD) customers.

To benefit from the programme, the company said the customer’s account must not have benefited from any previous discount scheme offered by EEDC and the arrears had to be within the period before January 1, 2023.

“In addition, customers must have subscribed to MAP metering, with Demand Note issued, as a conscious way of ensuring that debts are not allowed to accrue further,” Ezeh said.

On December 31, 2022, EEDC ended its Arrears One Time Settlement Scheme (OTS), a related initiative targeted at its customers with outstanding arrears.
