Obaseki insists on demolishing Edo Press Centre built by Ogbemudia

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has declared war against journalists in Edo, with his insistence on demolishing the Press Centre of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), built in the early 70s by the late Military Governor of the defunct Mid-West/Bendel State, Brig.-Gen. Samuel Ogbemudia.

The press centre, built on an expanse of land donated to NUJ, Edo state council by the then King Akenzua of Benin, is at No. 1, Gabriel Igbinedion Road, beside the mansion of the Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion, in the Government Reservation Area (GRA), Benin.

NUJ press centre in Benin is strategic, as it is the venue for daily distribution of local, regional, national and international newspapers and magazines to vendors and distributors.

The press centre of Edo NUJ also houses the befitting offices of correspondents’ chapel of the union, lawyers and other professionals.

It was gathered yesterday in Benin that Obaseki wanted to use Edo NUJ’s land to build Edo Museum of West African Art (EMOWAA), to house the stolen artifacts being returned to Benin from Europe, to rival the Edo Royal Museum, being built by Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, to house the same artifacts.

The Edo royal museum is located opposite the palace of the first-class monarch (Oba of Benin), with major stakeholders in the state and beyond supporting the initiative, which is backed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

It was also learnt that expatriates that would handle the EMOWAA project at NUJ’s press centre were on Thursday at the site for inspection, and they were accompanied by fully-armed policemen, with the demolition likely to commence this weekend.

The Functioning Director of Lands, Edo State Geographic Information Service (EDOGIS), Mrs. Lydia Igbinigie, earlier wrote to Edo Chairman of NUJ, Festus Alenkhe, on the land matter, while the Managing Director of EDOGIS, Mrs. Osaro Aihie, who was appointed by Obaseki about three months ago, later called Alenkhe on the same matter.

Edo Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie, a lawyer, met in his office yesterday morning with some stakeholders on the NUJ’s land matter, with a member of the executive of the state’s NUJ (name withheld) quoting the SSG as stating that he was not aware of the land tussle and demolition bid, but promised to get the details.

Efforts were later made to speak with Edo SSG, but his MTN line was not available, at press time.

Edo Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, through the telephone, stated that Obaseki’s government was working on moat’s right of way in Benin and its environs, while he declined further comment on the NUJ’s land matter and planned demolition of the befitting secretariat.

Edo chairman of NUJ, who lost his mother some days ago, when contacted through the phone, declined to comment on the matter.

The President of NUJ, Chris Isiguzo, when contacted for his reaction, through the phone from Owerri, Imo State, at 4:53 p.m. yesterday, said: “Please, ask Edo State Chairman of NUJ. I earlier told Festus Alenkhe what to do.”

Alenkhe, at 5:03 p.m., through the phone, said: “Mr. President (of NUJ) directed Edo State Council’s leadership of NUJ to resist the forcible takeover of the land.”

Edo chairman of NUJ also added that the directive of Isiguzo would be strictly adhered to.

  • Tinubu forerunner to Igbo presidency – Onoh

Tinubu forerunner to Igbo presidency – Onoh

The spokesman of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu Campaign Council in the south east geopolitical zone, Dr. Josef Onoh, has described the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a forbearer towards achieving a President of South East extraction.

Onoh spoke on the background of Tinubu’s South East Town Hall meeting in Owerri, Imo state, on Thursday.

The presidential candidate promised to resolve most agitations from the south east region, including having a stint in the presidency during the meeting.

Onoh said that Tinubu becoming the next President would be a precursor to the actualisation of the long yearning and aspiration of the region to produce a President, adding that he will also mediate on other troubling issues of self determination and insecurity in the south east.

He stressed as Tinubu promised in Owerri, he will ensure the restoration of the south east industrialization and revitalization of the collapsed industries in the region, particularly in Aba and return the region’s economic competitiveness as was obtained in the periods past.

According to the regional campaign spokesman, Tinubu’s statements in Owerri were a confirmation of his manifesto content which include economic buoyancy, infrastructural development, job creation and social justice that comprises soothing politically frayed nerves.

On the N1bn donation of the south east businessmen for the Asiwaju campaign, Onoh said that it was reciprocation of the region on the conducive environment the south west has created for business growth where the Igbo are major players of the financial sector.

He hailed Governors Hope Uzodinma (Imo) and Dave Umahi (Ebonyi) for their dedication to enthroning a President of unity, and leadership of the south east beyond ethnic sentiment.

“Umahi has all it takes to continue his quest to be president yet he laid it down, accepted the outcome of the primaries and supported Aswaju not for his selfish benefit rather a sacrifice made towards actualization of a future that the south east may occupy the presidency, but that future isn’t 2023,” Onoh said.

According to him: “Asiwaju’s commitment in Owerri was an indication of good things to come and all the wise Igbo people should understand that Tinubu is the John the Baptist, the forerunner toward our Igbo dreams and this is time for us to build on the dreams so as to take our position in the presidency by supporting the forerunner who can help lay the foundation and in few years we too can also assume that exalted seat.

“So Asiwaju is the foundation we can now build on to assure a better future for our children so that our own children will not come tomorrow and start agitating that they want the presidency, while we that are saddled with the responsibility of making it happen and all we need to do is to drop our ego and create a foundation for it to happen.”

He noted that the region was founded to be a leader in economic advancement beyond the shores of Nigeria and played pivotal roles through its political leaders in the pre and post independence Nigeria, but declined during the military era.

He said that the present democracy has offered the south east the opportunity of regaining its lost glory through proper political alignment and positive attitude in the Nigeria inclusive leadership, which he said that Bola Tinubu represents.

“The previous demand for restructuring Nigeria notwithstanding, the Igbo must identify those that share the same values with them, and persuade them to forge partnerships to resist unwieldy policies from the federal government.

“The latin phrase ‘Amat victoria coram’ means victory loves preparation. Voting for Aswaju come 2023 will be the wisest decision the south east can ever make because electing a south easterner as future president of Nigeria cannot be achieved through thought and thought alone. Its through action that we achieve results and enjoy success, hence it is imperative we unit to ensure victory for Asiwaju come 2023 and enthrone a John the Baptist who shall be our forerunner to the presidency,” Onoh advised.

East-West road communities hail NDDC for repairing damaged portions

Indigenes of Umeh community in Isoko South Local Government of Delta State and Okobe in Ahoada West Local Government of Rivers State have hailed Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), for repairing the damaged sections of the East West road.

Speaking at the Umeh section of the East West road, near Patani, an indigene of the community, Mr. Alex Ifure, said the quick intervention of the NDDC was the saving grace for his people and commuters, who had suffered for many weeks on account of the devastation caused by the flood.

A statement signed yesterday by the NDDC Director, Corporate Affairs, Dr. Ibitoye Abosede, said Ifure expressed satisfaction about the restoration work being done by the construction company engaged by the NDDC to carry out emergency repairs on the road, which he noted was their only link to Bayelsa and other Niger Delta states.

He said besides the road, the flood also destroyed their farms, leaving the farmers with nothing to take to the markets to sell and feed themselves.

“Look at our market, it is scanty because our people have lost their crops to the flood,” he said.

The Umeh Market Master, Emmanuel Ogberiegbe, said if NDDC had not rescued them, many people would have died of hunger because they were predominantly farmers.

At Okobe community in Ahoada East Local Government of Rivers State, the monarch of Igbuduya Kingdom, Eze Ikaki Ikaki, said his people were happy that the NDDC intervened to ease their pains from the devastation caused by the flood.

He said: “This is what we expected. I say kudos to NDDC and the Federal Government. We also expect the commission and the various levels of government to engage us in discussions to work out a lasting solution to the perennial flood.”

The traditional ruler advised the contractor to deliver quality job, regardless of the urgent nature of the emergency repairs.

He said: “This section of the road needs a bridge, not culverts. It is obvious that the small culverts cannot take the volume of water on the road whenever flood hits.”

A motorist, Inyang Victor, appealed to the Federal Government to look for a solution to the flood problem, which he said was taking a huge toll on the lives of the people in the affected communities.

A commuter from Bayelsa State, Mrs. Esther Austin, said she was surprised at the quick intervention of the NDDC in the wake of the collapse of the East-West road at several points.

The Project Manager of SETRACO, Michel Issa, said the company had worked round the clock to ensure the road was passable.

He said: “We mobilised our equipment to the bad sections as soon as NDDC engaged us. We have successfully fixed the bad sections of the road.”

Petrol price hits N250 per litre in Awka

Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly called petrol, now sells for between N240 and N250 per litre in Awka, Anambra State capital, and its environs.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) correspondent, who monitored the situation in Awka yesterday, reports that the NNPC mega station in the town was closed to customers for lack of products.

NAN also reports that most private outlets had products, but were selling above the regulated price of between N180 and N190.

He said it was no longer pleasurable to use private cars due to the huge cost of maintenance.

He urged the Federal Government, through the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), to protect customers.

A commuter bus operator, who simply identified himself as Emeka, said the increase had been built into fares, with additional N50 on former fares for every intra-city drop.

He said increase in the price of petrol was affecting their business and also affecting prices of other goods and services.

Mr. Chinedu Anyaso, chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), said the prevailing pump price was a reflection of what was going on at the private depots where they procured products.

Efforts to get reaction from NMDPRA were not successful, as Mr. Victor Orjiakor, operations controller in Anambra office, did not take his call or respond to text message sent to him.

Kanu was arraigned at the court on the terrorism charge brought against him by the Federal Government.

He was being tried on the charge before the October 13 judgment of the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which faulted the manner he was brought back from Kenya by government agents, and proceeded to discharge him, a decision the Federal Government has appealed.

Yesterday, lawyers to the prosecution and defence told the Federal High Court about the pending appeals at the Supreme Court filed by both sides, following which Justice Binta Nyako elected to adjourn indefinitely pending the outcome of the appeals.

At the mention of the case, lead prosecuting lawyer Mohammed Abubakar told the court that Kanu refused to be brought to court from the custody of the State Security Service (SSS) in protest of his claim that the Federal Government failed to obey the judgment freeing him.

Kanu’s lead lawyer, Mike Ozekhome (SAN), did not dispute Abubakar ‘s position on why his client was not in court.

Ozekhome later urged the court to stay further proceedings pending the outcome of the appeals filed by both the prosecution and defence before the Supreme Court, a request Abubakar did not object.

Ozekhome subsequently noted that his client was not yet served with a copy of the amended charge recently filed by the prosecution.

He claimed that the defence legal team only heard about the filing of an amended charge on social media.

Ruling, Justice Nyako said the case would be adjourned sine die pending the outcome of the appeals before the Supreme Court.
