Maternal mortality: NGO seeks implementation of safe abortion law by A’Ibom govt

Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) has urged the Akwa Ibom state government to implement the safe abortion law to reduce maternal morbidities and mortalities.

The nongovernmental organization said that the National Health Demographic Survey report (2018) places Akwa Ibom as the state with the highest number of maternal mortality of 420 deaths/100,000 live births.

The law also known as Abortion SToP Guideline was passed into law in 2018 and adopted by the Akwa Ibom state government in 2024 as part of its Sexual Reproductive Health Rights(SRHR) intervention initiative.

The Abortion SToP Guidelines provides legal grounds, information and conditions for the termination of pregnancy likely to lead to the death of pregnant women in the country.

State Coordinator Gynecologist Association of Nigeria, Dr. Abbah Mathias Gabriel during his keynote speech at the WARDC one-day Roundtable discussion at the weekend in Uyo, urged states, especially Akwa Ibom to implement the SToP Guideline.

Speaking to our reporter on the sidelines of the workshop, Dr. Gabriel said, “The guideline is on the safe termination of unsafe pregnancy with legal indicators.

“The subheadline is an offshoot of the national SToP guideline which was to improve on the Nigerian laws pertaining to safe abortion. These laws are both in the criminal code in the North and in the South.

“The law is to inform people on the possible effective conditions that can demand the termination of pregnancy legally. The aim is to actually reduce the number of women suffering from the complications of poorly performed termination of pregnancy, what we call unsafe abortion.

“Included in this also is the training of personnel to handle this matter. Nigeria came up with the SToP Guideline in 2018 and Akwa Ibom state adopted it in 2024.

“Unfortunately, the Guideline is not well circulated for people to know that there are legal indicators for the termination of pregnancy to prevent morbidities and mortalities.

“The purpose of the guideline is to provide legal condition for the termination of pregnancy that endangers the life pregnant women not social termination of pregnancy. It is for also to protect the baby”

Also speaking, a Director with WARDC, Mrs. Mary-George Gbemilola explained that the Roundtable discussion was to create awareness on Sexual Reproductive Health Rights.

“At this level we want to see some of the states who have the safe pregnancy guideline. We want to see how far in terms of implementation. We want to see accountability because a lot of deaths around women, maternal mortality.

We want to see how we can engage the state governments to see how they can assist to reduce the number of women dying during child birth and women dying as a result of unsafe abortion.

“We are embarking on monitoring and evaluation to see where we are and how to close the gap, how to meet up with different developmental approaches in communities”, she said.

APC youths laud Matawalle’s contributions, disown faction

The APC Youth Leaders Network has commended the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, for what they described as his remarkable contributions to national security, particularly in the Northwest .

The group, at a press conference in Abuja, dissociated themselves from a recent protest by some individuals claiming to be APC youths, demanding the EFCC’s investigation of Matawalle.

According to them, the protest was allegedly stage-managed by Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal.

“Apparently, the recent events on a sponsored protest to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by a faction that claimed to be APC youths, demanding an investigation of Matawalle should be seen as nothing short of an embarrassing attempt to spread falsehood for vendetta politics,” the statement said.

“Indeed, this trying times call for an urgent need for Nigerians to circumspectly evaluate any spurious allegations flying around. It is no strange news that Governor Dauda Lawal’s loud failure in discharging the basic functions of governance has pushed him into a new vocation— that is, funding faceless and unrecognizable coalition, mobilizing street protests, and orchestrating malicious narratives that’s aimed at undermining the President Tinubu’s led-administration.

“Nevertheless, our commitment to truth, justice, and the preservation of democratic integrity that the APC stands for, remains undeterred. Let it be made clear: Minister Bello Matawalle is a respected patriot whose legacy and contributions to national security, particularly in the Northwest, continue to uphold the visionary Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“However, Governor Lawal at the other side, rather than governing with the mandate bestowed upon him by the good people of Zamfara State, he has regrettably drowned Zamfara deeper into insecurity, institutional decadency, and economic stagnation.

“Moreover, it’s on record that insecurity in Zamfara has worsened alarmingly under Lawal’s control. Daily news of banditry festers, communities being ransacked, lives being lost in thousands, and the cry of protection that was never answered. Evidently, it is not out of place to say that the governor is either grossly incompetent to lead or criminally negligent— or perhaps both.

“Undoubtedly, no sincere observer of today’s Nigerian polity can ignore the coordinated pattern of misinformation emanating from the seat of power in Zamfara state. The so-called protest, ludicrous assertions,  and malicious claims peddled by a faction of misguided youths under the dubious banner of the All Progressives Congress Young Leaders Alliance (APC-YLA) against Minister Matawalle is a desperate calculated distraction at diverting public attention away from Lawal’s monumental failures in Zamfara State. Unfortunately , their baseless vituperations stem from an acute awareness of their own irrelevance in the APC political sphere.”

The APC Youth Leaders Network described Lawal’s administration as “a national embarrassment and a symbol of what should never again be allowed in Nigerian politics.”

It urged the EFCC to investigate Lawal’s financial dealings and conduct a full forensic audit of state expenditures.

The group said Matawalle stands out as a paragon of dedication and patriotism, consistently demonstrating unwavering commitment to national security and stability.

It added that his tireless efforts in coordinating local intelligence, devising effective defence strategies, and supporting counterinsurgency operations in the Northwest region have yielded verifiable and commendable results.

The group reaffirmed  support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Matawalle, describing the latter as “an epitome of service, loyalty, and patriotism.”

It expressed confidence that truth and justice would prevail, and Zamfara State would be delivered from Governor Lawal’s leadership, which they described as “a monumental failure”

  • Benjamin Kalu: A fresh face in South East political leadership

Benjamin Kalu: A fresh face in South East political leadership

    By Bamidele Atoyebi

Breakthroughs often arise from unexpected changes in strategy or embracing new methodologies. It’s widely understood that repeating the same actions while hoping for different outcomes can be seen as madness.

The South East has long been home to influential political figures, yet their contributions have frequently been overlooked, leading to persistent feelings of marginalization. The list of prominent leaders is extensive, but the circumstances for the South East have remained stagnant, if not deteriorated.

A key issue has been the region’s approach to its political challenges. There’s a perception that the South East struggles to engage in necessary compromises and negotiations. This could be attributed to a leadership model focused on equality and centralized power that has failed to adapt to Nigeria’s complex political landscape. Successful navigation through this landscape requires flexibility and collaboration, qualities that have often been lacking in previous leadership.

However, there is hope with Benjamin Kalu’s leadership style, which emphasizes negotiation over confrontation. Initially, his position as Deputy Speaker was met with disappointment from many who had hoped for a higher role. Yet, his approach has proven beneficial, as he successfully unites the region and works to integrate it into national politics, moving away from a stance of opposition.

Recently, for the first time, South East officials gathered together to strategize on how to benefit the region, inspired by Kalu’s leadership. This cooperative effort has not been seen in the past, despite previous political leaders.

Through loyalty to his party and effective negotiation, Kalu has secured the establishment of the South East Development Commission, marking a significant achievement. Historically, the region would have lagged behind in such developments, highlighting his effective leadership.

Kalu’s methods have drawn comparisons to the political strategies of the South West, which favor non-confrontational approaches that may seem timid but ultimately yield favorable outcomes. This contrasts sharply with past leadership styles that resorted to confrontation, which resulted in tragic consequences for the South East.

Previous figures like Odimegwu Ojukwu and Nnamdi Kanu had employed aggressive tactics to address the region’s issues, but these approaches led to significant loss and suffering. Similarly, Ike Ekweremadu, although influential, failed to leverage his position for meaningful benefit to the region. Peter Obi’s tenure also faced criticism for lacking the political acuity necessary for genuine progress, especially as his supporters used divisive rhetoric.

Obi’s approach, especially regarding ethnic and religious issues, alienated potential supporters and created factionalism. These missteps have provided valuable lessons, highlighting the need for a different strategy in the South East’s political engagement.

Benjamin Kalu, despite being relatively new to his role, has quickly made strides to uplift the region, attracting projects and building relationships that draw the South East closer to the center of political power. His vision is resonating with the populace, including traditional rulers who have pledged substantial support for the APC in the upcoming elections.

Kalu is even taking assertive steps, signaling to Governor Alex Otti that remaining outside the central party would hinder progress. Kalu’s focus on political alignment is essential for long-term development in the South East, and he is actively working to rectify previous leadership shortcomings.

  • Who switched the light on in Abia? Celebrating Alex Otti’s two years of real governance

Who switched the light on in Abia? Celebrating Alex Otti’s two years of real governance

    • By: Obinna Udensi

For many years, when people heard “Abia State,” what followed was either a complaint, a sigh, or a tired joke. Roads were in ruins, pensioners were begging, and the government looked more like a family inheritance. But in just two years, something unusual, almost suspiciously good, has happened. The streetlights are on. Salaries are paid. Roads are being fixed. Aba is cleaning up. People are hopeful again.

So I ask again, with all seriousness, who switched the light on in Abia?

His name is Dr Alex Chioma Otti, the people’s governor, the man who took over the steering wheel on May 29, 2023, and chose to drive forward instead of circling the same potholes of the past. He is not performing magic. He is just doing what leaders are meant to do — lead with sense, vision, and courage.

And as he clocks two years in office this May 29, it is only right we pause, reflect, and give him his due. He is undercelebrated, and Abia must do better in acknowledging the man who is finally treating the state like it matters.

Here are some of Dr Alex Otti’s most notable achievements in just two short years:

    Infrastructure That Speaks for Itself

Ossah Road Dualisation (Umuahia): This critical road leading to the Government House had been a mess for decades. Reconstruction is now nearing completion with proper drainage, walkways, and lighting.

Port Harcourt Road (Aba): One of the most neglected roads in the commercial hub of Aba, now awarded to Julius Berger and under full reconstruction, a first in decades.

Over 40 roads have been reconstructed or rehabilitated across Aba, Umuahia, Ohafia, and surrounding towns, including Omuma, Kent, College Road, Uratt, and MCC by Okigwe Road.

    Fresh faces in government

Dr Otti did not recycle old politicians. He introduced new people to leadership — professionals, technocrats, and competent young hands who are result-driven:

This shift from political loyalty to performance-based leadership is refreshing and impactful.

Civil Service Reform and Salary Payments

Cleared several months of unpaid salaries and pensions left behind by previous administrations, put in place a monthly salary system where workers and pensioners are now paid promptly without having to protest, introduced a digital payroll and verification platform to eliminate ghost workers and sanitise the system

Aba and Umuahia are breathing again

Under the Clean Aba Initiative, refuse heaps are being cleared, and waste management is now functioning; regular street cleaning, drainage work, and market sanitation are changing the look and feel of Aba

    Health sector uplift

Renovated and equipped the Amachara General Hospital and over 15 primary healthcare centres in rural communities; rolled out mobile medical outreach programs to reach underserved communities; recruited more health workers and ensured drug supply in public hospitals.

    Education and youth empowerment

Renovated several public schools across the state; reintroduced regular teacher retraining programs; launched the Abia Innovation and Tech Hub, creating access to digital training and remote job opportunities for youths.

    Transparent and accountable governance

Holds regular town hall meetings to listen directly to the people, introduced quarterly media briefings to explain government actions and finances; brought back public confidence by showing working results instead of hiding behind sirens.

    A new political culture

This is not just about fixing roads. Dr Otti is resetting the leadership template in Abia. For the first time in decades, governance is not about settling political allies or doing the bare minimum. It is about serving the people with dignity and honesty.

    Let the work continue

As a proud Abian, I believe every well-meaning citizen must reject the old order and allow Dr Alex Otti to complete his 8-year mandate. Two years is not enough to repair all the damage done over decades, but it is more than enough to prove that this governor knows what he is doing.

Abia is no longer a joke. It is becoming a benchmark. We have seen light, and it is only right that we protect it.

Most of us outside the state heard the gist, came back home, and saw more than we were told. This is not politics. This is progress. And it deserves our gratitude and our support.

God bless Dr Alex Otti. God bless Abia State.

  • Lawyer hails Senate President

    Lawyer hails Senate President

Senator Godswill Akpabio has been praised for handling and managing the 10th Senate, promoting peace, fostering cooperation and collaboration in the National Assembly.

According to a statement by a Lagos -based lawyer, Chijioke Nduibisi, the Senate President should be happy as accolades are coming from Senators themselves, especially when provocative remarks such as ‘You sexually harassed me’ enveloped the Upper Chamber.

He said part of the encomiums pouring on the Senate President came from a group of intellectuals in the Senate led by Senator representing Ondo South Senatorial District,  Jimoh Ibrahim, adding that this underscores the level of intellectualism embedded in the 10th Senate.

According to him, the achievements of the 10th Senate under the leadership of Akpabio were numerous, including the introduction of beneficial policies that mitigate conflict by encouraging a harmony of interests , and shared objectives.

He stated further that the belief in cooperation and collaboration, which is evident within the Nigerian National Assembly, had yielded positive outcomes.

He said Akpabio’s cooperation and collaboration thesis was in pari materia with President Bola Tinubu’s political and economic ideology, and has led to political stabilisation and democratic peace in the country so far. “It is equally the contention of some political pundits in the Senate that the Senate President is indeed a true force for good and removing him in years to come may pose some challenges,” Nduibisi posited.

As a testament to the good handling of the Senate, he  alluded to the recognition given to Akpabio by President Tinubu when he said emphatically in a video, “We are proud of you.”

He also congratulated Akpabio for getting a vote of confidence in his leadership twice a week from his colleagues.

While joining others in applauding  the Senate President in his rise in the political legitimacy of Classical Discourse, Nduibisi, however, warned that “it is not yet uhuru for the Senate President, and that more statesmanship approach is required in management and leading of the Senate in the interest of stabilizing our democratic Journey.”

  • Flooding: Southeast, NEMA declare zero tolerance for silted drains

Flooding: Southeast, NEMA declare zero tolerance for silted drains

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu State governments have declared zero tolerance for blocked or silted up drains to avert flooding in the zone.

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), they made the declaration in a separate interview survey on preparations for the 2025 flood predictions in the South East by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET).

NAN reports that NIMET identified 30 states that would likely experience heavy rains and possible flooding.

The Head of Operations, NEMA in Enugu, Mrs Ngozi Echeazu, said the agency started early sensitisation and action plans to avert the incidents of flash flood within major metropolises and highly populated areas within the South-East.

She said that the Agency had remained proactive, knowing that the 2025 Flood Prediction forecasted an early onset of rains in the South-East.

Echeazu, whose office covers NEMA operations in Anambra, Ebonyi and Enugu States, noted that the Agency had held some engagements with its partners and critical stakeholders on the need to start early on all sensitisation and action plans.

She said that NEMA had written to state governments, State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and council areas on the 2025 Flood Prediction, stating the need for all to start preparations to forestall flash floods usually coming with early rains.

According to her, with the active collaboration of Enugu SEMA, Local Emergency Management Committee (LEMC), NEMA has carried out massive sensitisation in major markets in two local governments within Enugu metropolis, whose locations had high population and human activities.

Echeazu noted that during the sensitisation, NEMA and its partners reached out to the market leadership, traders and passers-by on the need to check dumping of refuse in drains and waterways as well as desilting of all drains.

“We are using the NYSC-NEMA Vanguard to reach out to schools and playgrounds, and fields to sensitise youths, who are the ones that evacuate their families’ waste, to do it properly and desist from dropping them indiscriminately,” she said.

The operational head noted that the Agency’s sensitisation had not been full-blown since the awaited logistics support from headquarters was yet to arrive, adding: “We are doing the ones within Enugu to manage cost.”

Corroborating, the Chairman of the Enugu South LGA, Chief Caleb Ani, said that for the past two months, the council had embarked on ‘operation open drainages’.

The chairman said that the council had deployed resources to ensure that major drainages and waterways were opened.

Ani noted that ward councillors and neighbourhood chairmen had been engaged and sensitised on the need to complement what the council had done by desilting drainages and waterways in their areas.

The chairman noted that he had briefed market chairmen and heads that indiscriminate dumping of refuse on the road and on drainages, especially in the Mayor and Garki markets,, would not be tolerated any more.

“We want to ensure that proactive steps are taken to forestall all forms of flooding be it the initial flash flood or the main flood in the later part of the year as forecast by NIMET,” he said.

In Anambra, the Commissioner for Environment,  Dr Felix Odimegwu, said the state government has kicked off a statewide campaign codenamed “Operation Clear Your Waterways”.

He said that the whole essence of the statewide campaign was to clear the drainages for the free flow of flood water ahead of the rainy season across the communities and cities of the state.

Odimegwu said that the enforcement had already commenced, saying that the campaign was in pursuant to Public Health Law, Drainage Management Policy and Environmental Management, Protection and Administration Law.

He disclosed that the proactive measure initiated was in line with Gov. Charles Soludo’s vision to transform Anambra into a smart megacity.

Odimegwu said that the state had already braced up to the challenges, hence the reasons for the state’s quick response to the 2025 weather prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency.

“To prevent potential flooding and associated risks, we have declared a zero-tolerance policy on blocked or silted drains,” he said.

Odimegwu urged residents to evacuate all de-silted debris around their domain, warning that offenders would be prosecuted according to the law.

Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), has blamed incessant flooding at Anor Community in Ivo Local Government Area to the abandoned Dam project.

Mr Clement Ovuoba, Executive Secretary of the agency, revealed that a section of the uncompleted Dam had collapsed, thereby causing flooding annually in the area.

According to him, lives, houses, farmlands and outputs are affected during the rainy season.

He explained that during the rainy season, two rivers in the area merge together, finding their way into the dam, overflowing and splitting apart because of the damage.

“Ivo abandoned Dam is another place where we have serious flooding in the state during the rainy season.

“Ngwongwo, Okwe and Amokwe in Anor community, where the Dam is situated, have suffered for years now,” Ovuoba said.

He called on the federal government to pay attention to the perennial experience and intervene by ensuring the completion of the dam project in the area to mitigate floods.

He commended the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) on the Iyiudele drainage project and others in the capital city and stressed the need to channel the Ebonyi River to reduce flooding.

The SEMA official disclosed its readiness against any eventual flooding in the state and announced the reactivation of effective response.

He said the reactivation followed the release of seasonal rainfall prediction and warning of heavy rainfall in 30 states, including Ebonyi, by NIMET in its weather forecast.

He said that the state had commenced a sensitisation campaign through jingles, public lectures on disaster control and advocacy visits to avert any emergency.
