Assembly okays Okpebholo’s request to recover state funds with consultants

The 24-member Edo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Monday Okpebholo’s request to engage a consultant, Tiarua White Consults Ltd, in the recovery of state’s funds.

The consultant, yesterday, according to Okpebholo, would review, reconcile and recover the funds due to Edo government from project Gazelle Afriexim loan and other crude oil loan arrangements. The deduction at source of 10 per cent as professional fee was also approved.

The request letter, signed by Okpebholo, was read to lawmakers during the plenary session by the Speaker, Chief Blessing Agbebaku.

The governor said the purpose of the letter was to draw the attention of the lawmakers to the challenge, and to request approval to join the 35 other states to recover the amount due to it from the project Gazelle Afriexim loan.

Agbebaku said there was need to support and grant the request of Okpebholo, noting that the funds would aid socio-economic development in Nigerian states.

The lawmakers, in a voice vote, approved the governor’s request to engage the consultant to recover the loan.

Also at plenary, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Edo chapter, in a letter to the House of Assembly dated April 8, 2025, nominated Mr. Charity Aiguobarueghian for the position of minority leader and Yekini Idiaye as the minority whip.

Airobarueghian, until April 7, was the majority leader, but a change was effected, in view of the fact that the governing APC now has 13 members, while the main opposition PDP is left with 11 lawmakers in the assembly.

Obi of Onitsha didn’t issue any warning to northern youths – CoS

The Imeobi Onitsha Traditional Council has dismissed trending media report of a purported warning to northern youths credited to His Majesty, Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe (Agbogidi), the Obi of Onitsha over tension arising from the unfortunate killing of northern travellers in Uromi, Edo State recently.

A statement by Chief Osita Anionwu (Ike Akatakwuani of Onitsha), Chief of Staff to the Obi of Onitsha insisted His Majesty didn’t issue the inflammatory statement, describing it as fake, fabricated and inaccurate and urged the general public to disregard it.

The statement reads: “The Palace of the Obi of Onitsha wishes to inform the general public that His Majesty, Nnaemeka Achebe (Agbogidi), has made no statement regarding the recent killing of northerners in Edo State. Furthermore, he has issued no warning to anyone on the matter.

“This is another instance in the growing pattern of attributing fake statements to His Majesty, with the aim of stirring disaffection. The statement attributed to him is not only inaccurate but also inflammatory. We urge the public to disregard the fabricated statement and instead focus on promoting unity and understanding.

“As a chairman of peace and harmony among all Nigerians, His Majesty remains committed to fostering an environment of mutual respect and cooperation among people of different ethnic and regional backgrounds. Let us work together to build bridges, not walls.”

Edo Assembly gets new Majority Leader, Chief Whip

Edo State House of Assembly yesterday named Jonathan Aigbokhan (APC–Esan West) as the new Majority Leader, following the emergence of All Progressives Congress (APC) as the majority party in the House.

Last month, APC notified the Assembly of its new majority status and indicated that changes in the House leadership would be announced in due course.

APC currently holds 13 seats after four lawmakers defected from Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP), reducing PDP’s seats to 11.

During yesterday’s plenary session in Benin, the Speaker, Blessing Agbebaku, read a letter from the APC leadership nominating new principal officers.

According to the letter, Aigbokhan was appointed as the new Majority Leader, Addeh Isibor as Deputy Majority Leader and Mustapha Lecky as Chief Whip.

The position of Deputy Chief Whip, initially assigned to Richard Edosa (APC-Oredo West), was withdrawn, as the House does not recognise such a position. Edosa, formerly the sole LP lawmaker, recently defected to the APC.

The Speaker and Deputy Speaker positions remain occupied by members of the minority PDP.

Following the announcement of the new leadership, Speaker Agbebaku disclosed that the PDP would also submit its list of principal officers.

He emphasised that the distinction between majority and minority should not distract from the House’s collective responsibility to serve the state.

“What matters is that we all work together to ensure the success of Governor Monday Okpebholo,” Agbebaku said.

Eno hails Eket council over N50m grant to SMEs, construction of city hall

Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno has said that local governments in the State have no excuse not to execute projects that positively impact the socioeconomic well being of people at the grassroots.

Eno said this at the weekend when he witnessed the disbursement of N50million Eket ARISE empowerment initiative small business grants to 500 beneficiaries by Eket local government.

The Governor also commissioned the 5,000 capacity Eket city hall as well as performed the foundation stone laying for the ultra-modern Eket legislative complex.

Excited by the three landmark achievements of the council, Eno, who was represented by the commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Frank Archibong, said the projects were in line with the ARISE Agenda of his administration.

He said: “I am excited to be in Eket. This one is a landmark project. Whenever you see this picture anywhere you will know that this is Eket. Speakers have said that this is the hall for the senatorial district. It is not just a hall for the senatorial district, the state can also use the hall.

“His Excellency the Governor, who has sent me to represent him at this event, will be in this hall very soon and I am sure he will add to what has been done here.

“This three-pronged event of the disbursement of N50 million, the first of it’s kind in any local government in Nigeria, foundation stone laying of the legislative chamber and of course the commissioning of this magnificent edifice is the one that will go down in the annals of the history of this land.

“And I make bold to say that this is ARISE Agenda at work in the local government. His Excellency is desirous of seeing more life touching projects dot the landscape of every local government area in the state”.

Chairman of Eket local government area, Mr. Akaniyene Tommey, said that each of the projects reflected his determination to complement the transformative ARISE Agenda of Governor Umo Eno.

He said: “the edifice is more than just a building; it is a symbol of unity and progress. With seating capacity of 5,000, complemented by offices and mini conference Hall, the facility is designed to serve as a premier hub for major events, conferences and social gatherings.

“Beyond it’s cultural and economic significance, it will be a key driver of our internally generated revenue and create numerous employment opportunities.

“The Eket ARISE Empowerment Initiative SmallBiz Grant of N50million to 500 entrepreneurs is a clear demonstration of our resolve to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as the backbone of our local economy just like His Excellency, Pst Umo Eno has prioritized empowering SMEs”.

  • Nigeria Youth: The engine of our industrial future

Nigeria Youth: The engine of our industrial future

    By Dr Femi Akinkuebi

Nigeria stands at a crossroads. Its aspirations for economic transformation and sustainable development continue to run into familiar barriers—reliance on crude oil, an import-heavy economy, and underperforming industrial capacity. While these issues are deeply entrenched, they are not insurmountable. The real tragedy would be failing to act while holding an often-overlooked trump card: a youthful, vibrant population that has the potential to drive an industrial revolution.

Industrialisation is not merely one of many options—it is the tested and proven route through which nations have built wealth, reduced poverty, and strengthened their global influence. From the early industrial revolutions in Europe to Asia’s 21st-century manufacturing dominance, the path is clear: prosperity lies in producing, not just consuming. For Nigeria, this path remains largely underdeveloped.

The country’s industrial growth has long been stifled by a litany of challenges. Frequent power outages, poor transport and logistics infrastructure, inconsistent government policies, bureaucratic bottlenecks, and limited access to finance have made manufacturing a daunting prospect. In many instances, it is cheaper to import finished goods than to produce them locally. Despite abundant raw materials, Nigeria continues to export crude oil and agricultural commodities, only to import refined products and processed foods at a premium.

While these systemic challenges must be addressed, Nigeria cannot afford to sit idle. The rest of the world is not waiting. Countries with fewer resources are racing ahead, driven by strategic industrial policies and empowered populations. Today, smart factories, robotics, and artificial intelligence are reshaping manufacturing globally. Nations that once relied on manual labour now export cutting-edge technologies. Meanwhile, many Nigerian factories sit idle or operate below capacity.

Yet Nigeria holds a secret weapon—its youth. With over 60 percent of the population under 30, according to the National Bureau of Statistics and UN demographic data, the country is blessed with a workforce of more than 130 million young people. This figure exceeds the entire populations of countries like Japan, Germany, or the United Kingdom. It is a demographic dividend that, if properly harnessed, could transform Nigeria into an industrial powerhouse.

History offers compelling examples of what is possible when nations invest in their young populations. After the devastation of World War II, Japan rebuilt its economy by instilling a culture of discipline and innovation among its youth. Young engineers and entrepreneurs became the bedrock of what is now one of the most technologically advanced societies in the world. In the 1980s and 1990s, South Korea emerged from military rule and poverty by channelling state investment into education and manufacturing, equipping its youth with skills and opportunities. Today, South Korea is not just an exporter of electronics and automobiles but also a leader in digital innovation.

China’s story is even more dramatic. With economic reforms initiated in 1978, the Chinese government created special economic zones and industrial clusters that employed millions of young people. It combined vocational training, access to capital, and a strong manufacturing ecosystem to lift more than 700 million people out of poverty in just four decades. Young workers were at the centre of this transformation, forming the backbone of China’s global export machine.

Closer to home, Ethiopia has begun taking bold steps to replicate these successes. With support from partners like China and the World Bank, Ethiopia established industrial parks focused on textiles and agro-processing. The Hawassa Industrial Park, for example, employs thousands of young Ethiopians and has become a model of labour-intensive manufacturing in Africa. These initiatives have not only increased exports but also reduced youth unemployment and urban poverty.

Nigeria must take a cue. It is not enough to have numbers; those numbers must be empowered. What is needed is a national industrial strategy anchored on youth participation. This means revitalising technical and vocational education, encouraging entrepreneurship in manufacturing, and providing access to finance and modern equipment. It means creating industrial parks and small-scale hubs not just in major cities, but in secondary towns and rural areas—places where young Nigerians can create, innovate, and build.

The focus must extend beyond large-scale industries to include small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which already account for a significant portion of employment across Africa. Youth-led SMEs in sectors such as agro-processing, fashion and textiles, waste recycling, construction materials, and packaging have shown resilience and innovation, even in challenging environments. Supporting these efforts through tax incentives, simplified regulations, and market access could dramatically expand Nigeria’s industrial footprint.

Technology also offers new opportunities. The integration of digital tools in logistics, production management, and distribution can help young manufacturers overcome traditional constraints. Platforms for e-commerce, inventory tracking, and supply chain optimisation are making it easier for youth-led businesses to reach national and international markets.

But youth alone cannot shoulder this burden. There must be coordinated support from all sectors of society. Government must provide the infrastructure, policy stability, and incentives. Financial institutions need to reimagine creditworthiness in ways that favour innovation and start-ups. Established entrepreneurs should serve as mentors, while universities and polytechnics must align their curricula with industrial needs.

The time has come to build a national consensus around industrialisation. It should not be a political talking point, but a unified agenda that transcends administrations and regional divides. It should be built into our educational system, our foreign policy, and our budgeting priorities. Industrialisation must become synonymous with national pride and progress.

Nigeria has the raw materials, the land, the markets, and most importantly, the people. What remains is to harness all of these into a productive force that builds instead of buys, that exports instead of imports, and that values skill and innovation over shortcuts and speculation.

The world is not standing still, and neither should Nigeria. The time to ignite an industrial revolution driven by our youth is now. The energy is there. The numbers are in our favour. What we need is the will.

Soludo, Moghalu emerge candidates in Anambra guber primaries

    • APC aspirant Okonkwo pulls out of process

Anambra governor, Chukwuma Soludo yesterday  won the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) governorship primary in the state.

Soludo was declared winner at the primary held at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, amidst tight security and under the watch of the officials of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The governor, vying for a second term, polled 3,171 votes from the 3,175 accredited delegates across the 326 political wards in the state.

He was confirmed with a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote in the primary election.

While presenting the party’s nomination certificate to the governor, Chairman of APGA Primary Election Electoral Committee, Chief Uchenna Nwegbo, said the process was in compliance with the Electoral Act, 2022.

Nwegbo said that Soludo’s unanimous adoption as the sole candidate of the party for the Nov. 8 governorship election also adhered to the provisions of the Electoral Act, 2022.

Reacting,  the governor praised APGA officials for organising what he called a well-structured exercise.

He also commended the delegates for their disciplined conduct and expressed gratitude to the people for their trust and support.

“Never before in Anambra’s history has there been such a wide consensus. I am truly humbled, and I assure you that I will not let APGA and the people of Anambra down.

“We will continue to work to deepen our vision of infrastructure development, human capital investment, security and  economic transformation.

“Anambra has not seen anything yet. Our agenda is loaded and we will continue the progress unbroken,” he said.

In a related development, a former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), George Muoghalu, yesterday clinched Labour Party’s governorship ticket ahead of the November 8, 2025, elections in the state.

Muoghalu polled 575 votes at the party’s primary held in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

The primary election was monitored by the officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as well as the party’s electoral team and other observers.

Muoghalu’s co-contender, John Nwosu, who had withdrawn from the contest earlier on Saturday, still garnered nineteen votes.

Reacting to his victory, Muoghalu said the party’s trust in him would not be misplaced as the defining moment for Anambra has come, adding that it was the time to build a prosperous and an inclusive state.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) was yet to elect its candidate at press time.

About 1,630 delegates were set in Awka, last night  to elect the flag bearer of the party  for the November 8th Anambra State governorship election.

At the time of filing this report, most of the delegates had been accredited, waiting for voting.

Seven aspirants had earlier bought nomination and expression of interest forms to contest the ticket, but only four aspirants were left as at 7:30 pm yesterday.

The aspirants are: Hon. Nicolas Ukachukwu, Chief Valentine Ozigbo, Engr. Johnbosco Onunkwo and Hon. Edozie Madu.

Those that have pulled out from the race based on their official statements include: Hon. Chukwuma Umoeji, Sir Paul Chukwuma and Prof. Obiora Okwonko.

Earlier in the day, the Chairman of the Anambra Governorship Primary Election Committee and Governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu, had a series of meetings with various sub-committees in order to ensure a hitch-free process.

Sir Paul  Chukwuma cited the existence of some unprogressive elements within the party as reason for his withdrawal and resignation from the party. On his part, Okonkwo cited violence which may endanger his supporters if he continues, as the reason for his withdrawal.

Okonkwo’s letter reads, “After a careful evaluation, and reflection, on the current state of the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election process in Anambra State, I have decided to withdraw my aspiration for the party’s governorship ticket.

“This decision to withdraw from the race was a difficult but necessary one because of some developments that are inconsistent with my principles and values. The project is not worth risking the lives of my supporters among other reasons.

“However, my passion for public service remains strong, and I will continue contributing to the socio-economic and political development of Anambra State and our country, Nigeria.

“I will also continue to help in ways I can towards the realization of President Bola Tinubu’s development programmes and the economic growth of our country, for the good of our countrymen and women.

“I appreciate the trust and support my political associates, supporters and stakeholders in the APC and other places have shown me. Your support has meant a lot. and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have connected with so many committed and passionate Anambrarians,” he wrote.

The Anambra State chairman of the party, Sir Basil Ejidike, has, however, described allegations of anomalies in the primary election process as untrue.

He said “those discrediting the ongoing primary election of the All Progressives Congress APC in Anambra State are the opposition group. Things are going smoothly without  any form of chaos and violence as being propagated by the enemies of the party.

“APC has no problem with the primary election, everything is going well, but you know politics is a game of number and the aspirants want to get as many delegates as possible to their side.”

PDP postpones Anambra governorship primary to April 8

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has shifted its Anambra governorship primary from April 5 to April 8.

Chidi Chidebe, PDP Anambra chairman, confirmed the development in Awka.

The primary will produce the party’s candidate for the Nov. 8 governorship election.

Chidebe said the National Secretariat approved the shift to complete necessary administrative processes and ensure a smooth exercise.

He described PDP as the most peaceful party in Anambra, ready to contest, united and prepared.

“Our primary election will now hold on Tuesday, April 8.

“With the confusion in other parties, it’s clear that PDP is not the problem,” he said.

He urged members to prioritise public and party interests over personal ambitions.

Tricycle operators hold peaceful protest as govt refuses to register association

Commercial tricycle operators in Aba, the commercial nerve of Abia State, have taken to the streets of the economic city to protest the refusal of the state government to register their association.

The tricyclists, under the auspices of ‘Real Keke Operators Association Abia-State (REKOAA),’  staged a peaceful demonstration around the major streets in Aba to register their displeasure with the state Ministry of Transport officials, whom they accused of working in collaboration with the Works Commissioner.

The protesters bearing different inscriptions to vent their anger, Saturday afternoon said the refusal of the state ministry of works officials to register their association was a breach of their constitutional rights of association.

Spokesperson of the group, Mr. Sunday Okenwa, in an interview, while debunking being sponsored by any person or group of individuals, said, “We commend our amiable and action-oriented governor, His Excellency Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, for his ongoing infrastructural development across the state. In less than two years, Abia has transformed into a very enviable state.

“Most of Abia’s dilapidated roads, including the famous Port Harcourt road in Aba, have been magnificently fixed. Residents of Abia are now enjoying the dividends of democracy, which were denied to them for decades.

“He is, indeed, a leader and not a ruler. We assure him of our full support in the upcoming 2027 election.

“We are also proud of Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, an illustrious and distinguished son of Abia State and Nigeria, who serves as the Honourable Commissioner for Transport in Abia State.

“His commendable work in executing the affairs of his ministry is notable. He is conscientious, upright, and God-fearing. We praise him for his good works in Abia State.

“Our primary concern is the denial of REKOAA’s right to operate as a recognized Tricycle Association in the state. In our opinion, this decision contradicts the Ministry of Transport’s Certificate of Approval, which granted REKOAA recognition.

“The certificate, handed over to Chairman Comrade Chimezie Nwokejiobi at Umuahia, states, ‘I write to convey the ministry’s approval for your Association to operate and manage the activities of all Keke Operators within your jurisdiction.’

“Additionally, Certificate of Registration No: MOT/T/063 certifies that REKOAA has been duly registered, having met all the Ministry’s requirements. What else can we say?”

“We are not opposed to ASTOPU,  Our concern is that REKOAA has met all the requirements set by the state government for approval, and the government has granted us approval and a license to operate.

“ASTOPU presented two conditions for collaboration with REKOAA members.

“Firstly, they demanded the dissolution of REKOAA’s registered membership and its integration into ASTOPU.

“Secondly, they insisted on reinstating outdated practices, including pit collection and multiple taxation, which have been abolished by the governor.

“Our humble request to our amiable governor is to intervene and call those preventing REKOAA from Registration to order. Despite fulfilling all necessary requirements and paying for offices in Umuahia and Aba, we kindly ask that you address this matter and ensure ASTOPU respects REKOAA’s rights.

“Denying registration to REKOAA would indeed create financial difficulties for them. Without registration, they wouldn’t be able to generate revenue to cover their expenses and renew the Ministry of Transport’s annual fees and also reduce the crime rate of the underaged using tricycles to commit.

“Having two tricycle management systems in Abia State could be beneficial, as it would provide tricycle operators with choices and encourage healthy competition.

“This, in turn, could support the transformational agenda of the Abia State government, led by His Excellency Dr. Alex Otti.

“That’s a disturbing development. It sounds like ASTOPU is using strong-arm tactics to coerce tricycle operators into registering with them.

“Using the police to harass and arrest operators, only to force them to register with ASTOPU, is a clear abuse of power.

“This kind of behavior can have serious consequences, including undermining trust in law enforcement and the Abia State Government and creating a culture of fear among tricycle operators.

“It’s also worth noting that such actions may be counterproductive, as they can lead to more reckless driving and accidents, as seen in other areas where similar tactics have been employed.

“The situation highlights the need for a fair and transparent regulatory framework that protects the rights of all stakeholders, including tricycle operators.

“It’s essential for the authorities to intervene and ensure that ASTOPU’s actions are investigated and addressed and called to order.”

Court restrains Abia govt from appointing new judges

A Federal High Court sitting in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, has restrained the Abia State Government and her agents from engaging in a fresh process for the appointment of new Judges in the state.

The order followed an application brought by two litigants, Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne and Victoria Okey Nwokeukwu, questioning the Abia State government’s engaging in a fresh process in the appointment of 10 new Judges in the state.

Our correspondent gathered that the plaintiffs were shortlisted by the Abia State Judicial Service Commission in 2022 for appointment as Judges in the Abia State Judiciary, and on October 17, 2022, they attended an interview conducted by the National Judicial Council.

The candidates were equally screened by the Department of State Security (DSS) thereafter and were awaiting official announcement as judges before the government reportedly jettisoned the exercise and began a fresh process, the reason courts in the state are lacking judges.

Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne and Victoria Okey Nwokeukwu had for themselves and on behalf of the 2022 shortlisted candidates for the appointment as Judges of Abia State Judiciary, dragged the Abia State Judicial Service Commission, the Chief Judge of the state, the Attorney General and eight others before the court.

The plaintiffs sought an interim order of the court directing the plaintiffs and the defendants to maintain the status quo in the suit pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice for interlocutory injunction in the suit.

Plaintiffs equally prayed the court for any further order or other orders as the court may deem fit to make in the circumstance.

After reading the affidavit of urgency in support of the motion ex parte deposed to by the 1st plaintiff, Uzoamaka Uche Ikonne; and after hearing O.O. Nkume, counsel for the plaintiffs move in terms of the motion paper, the court presided by Justice S. B. Onu ordered that all the parties to the action shall maintain status quo ante bellum pending the hearing and determination of the plaintiffs motion on notice.

Our correspondent gathered that the court also ordered that the plaintiffs shall enter into undertaking as to damages in the event that the order ought not to have been made.

Speaking after the court ruling, Amadi U.U, who described himself as a concerned citizen of Abia State, said until the process of appointment of judges was insulated from executive interference and influence, the administration of justice will be in jeopardy.

LP Supreme Court victory: Triumph of will of people over will of few — Otti

The Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Otti, says he received with excitement, the April 4, judgement of the Supreme Court of Nigeria which sacked the Julius Abure led National Working Committee of the Labour Party (LP), paving the way for the return of peace, unity and order in the party.

Otti said the leadership of the party had been vindicated by the Supreme Court judgement, which rightly held that Abure and his NWC had since “outlived their tenure,” which informed the constitution of the Senator Nenadi Usman-led National Caretaker Committee in Umuahia, the Abia State Capital, in 2024.

According to the governor, “I’m not just happy with the judgement; I also celebrate that the highest court in the land has vindicated our position that the tenure of the Abure-led National Working Committee had since expired.

“This sound judgement by the Supreme Court was the basis for our decision to set up the National Caretaker Committee led by distinguished Senators Esther Nenadi Usman as Chairman and Darlington Nwokocha as secretary” he said.

Otti added that the vision behind the setting up of the committee was to foster peace and unity, while strengthening the party to consolidate on the gains made in the last election, assuring that he and other leaders of the party would ensure that the party is reformed at all levels to become a more formidable political platform with the requisite structures and democratic credentials to offer effective and people-oriented leadership.

Otti commended the Supreme Court for its sound judgement which didn’t just meet the popular expectations of genuine Labour Party members in particular and Nigerians in general but one that would contribute in deepening democracy and sustaining good governance.

The Abia governor commended all those who kept faith and remained calm and peaceful while the battle for the soul of the party lasted, including the NLC, TUC, Party Stakeholders and supporters and all men and women of good conscience across the nation.

Otti called on the former national officers of the party to join hands with the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the National Caretaker Committee (NCC) of the party to move the party forward, assuring that he and other leaders of the party are committed to building an all-inclusive party devoid of discrimination and favoritism.
