    Agitation for Igbo president grows

    By Frank Ikpefan, Abuja

A Pan-Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-political organisation, Conference of Igbo Professionals Worldwide (COIPOW), has begun intensive campaigns, meeting and lobbying to ensure the Southeast produces the president in 2023.

The group slammed the formation of a security outfit by leader of proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu, saying the move would thwart the plan as most leaders would see it in a bad light and withdraw their support.

A statement on Wednesday by COIPOW’s National President Prof. Patrick Kalu, and National Secretary Uche Mbaka, described the security network as illegal, and appealed to the people not to take it seriously.

The statement reads: “We thank key Igbo leaders that attended our emergency meeting in Awka, Anambra State, where we deliberated and agreed on pushing for Igbo president in 2023.

“This is the sure way to go, and not the way Kanu wants. The gunpoint approach by Kanu is certainly not the way out, and he must be told so.

“Igbo people deserve the presidency this time. They have all it takes to produce the next president, and that is what we should be pushing for now with one strong voice in unity and sincerity of purpose.

“We cannot be demanding for president on one hand and supporting IPOB on the other hand. Nobody will take us serious if we do not take urgent steps to set the record straight by denouncing IPOB, its sponsors and founder.

“It is on this premise that we condemn Nnamdi for forming the ‘Eastern Security Network (ESN)’ in some parts of the region. Forming this militia group when we should be seen as peaceful and law abiding is not the best. Let it be known that IPOB and ESN do not have our blessings and will never do.

“We call on governors of the Southeast states and Ohanaeze Ndigbo to condemn and stop this criminality which may have grave consequences on the Igbo nation if nothing is done.”

SIX chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyibo Local Government Area of Rivers State have joined the All Progressives Congress (APC).

This is despite the deepening crisis in the party, characterised by suspensions and counter suspensions.

The defectors – Adolphus Nweke, Onyema Ihenna, Ibekwe Okere, among others – said the PDP is no better party. They hoped the party structure would become stronger after this crisis period. “We would rather be active members of the APC and partake in the dividend of the work, than answer big name and die in hardship”, they said.

The defectors were received on Wednesday by the party leader in Oyibo, Gift Okere, and caretaker committee Chairman Chamberlain Okorie.

Okorie noted that the PDP in Oyibo Ward 2 has crashed following the defection of key executives to the APC. He urged the new members to work for APC’s victory in the next elections.

He admonished them on the need for unity, cooperation and hard work to ensure victory for the party, even as he assured them of huge benefit under the leadership of Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi.

Okorie alleged the absence of government projects in the council despite the defectors’ hard work and commitment in the PDP.

He said: “PDP administration has done Oyibo people more harm than good. There is no Wike project in the council. When Rotimi Amaechi was governor, Oyibo council recorded key projects and human development programmes that posterity will be proud of.

“Your decision to join APC is a good one and you will soon confirm it. Amaechi has nothing to give you, but I assure you he will continue to fight for the entrenchment of true democracy.”

Ex-militant leaders to end sea piracy and kidnapping

    Our Reporter

Former militant leaders have promised to end sea piracy and kidnapping in the Niger Delta to foster development.

They also pledged to work with the leadership of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP) so it can achieve its objectives.

This was part of the resolutions reached at a peace meeting with former militant leaders, now referred to as delegates, drawn from the nine states of the Niger Delta.

The meeting culminated in an interactive session with Interim Administrator of PAP Col. Milland Dikio (rtd), in Agadagba-Obon, Ondo State, on December 18.

An ex-agitator, Chief Bibopiri Ajube (aka Gen. Shoot-at-Sight), made the call at the meeting. He urged his colleagues to work with the PAP to foster security and development in the Niger Delta.

He said: “We’re ready to work with you sir. There will be no road blocks henceforth. This leadership is with you, anytime you need us, call Boyloaf, call us. We will call each other and work with you.”

Ajube, who appealed that the Amnesty Office be restructured, admonished his colleagues to end sea piracy and kidnapping in their territories. He stressed that no government will develop youths and communities with high level of insecurity.

“Why are our people still involved in sea piracy and kidnapping? We are missing something. If you support this evil, which government will come and develop your land? Our agreement henceforth is this – no more sea piracy, no more kidnapping,” he added.

Spokesperson for the delegates and former IYC President Chris Ekiyor thanked Dikio for taking the initiative to meet the leaders. He urged him to collaborate with other Niger Delta related agencies and institutions so the programme will not be overburdened.

Ekiyor also promised that the delegates will work with Dikio, and he pledged their support for him even as they anticipate reforms in the Amnesty Programme that will bring the needed momentum towards development.

Col. Dikio thanked the delegates for their commitment to continue to work with the Programme, and assured them that their genuine demands would be looked into.

He also reiterated his vision to refocus the PAP to its original mandate of development, security and peace of the Niger Delta, while working with the governments in the region to make the Niger Delta safe.

  • PDP, APC trade words over Ebonyi violence

PDP, APC trade words over Ebonyi violence

    By Ogochukwu Anioke, Abakliki

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ebonyi State are in a war of words over the recent violence in the state.

Nine persons have been killed in what the police and government described as ‘cult-related’ killings.

A statement by the PDP Acting National Vice Chairman (Southeast), Ali Odefa, accused APC of orchestrating the murder of two party members.

He said: “The PDP notes with serious concerns the ugly developments in Ebonyi State in the last few weeks, which has led to the death of many innocent people.

“On November 27, Governor David Umahi made wild allegations against our party leaders, saying ‘I needed to raise an alarm because lives will be lost’. True to his threat, barely three days after that televised threat, a loyal member, Shedrak Nwode, from Umuezoka, Ezra South council, with his fiancée, were killed by a senior official of Umahi’s government.

“The late Nwode’s crime was refusing to shout ‘APC –Change’ at a wedding. Three days after Nwode’s death, on December 4, three prominent supporters of our party in Ugwulangwu community were arrested on trump up charges of sponsoring cultists and the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). It took serious interventions, including a threat to protest naked in Abakaliki by old women, for them to be released.

“…our members yet again suffered injuries with cars vandalised and many of them lost their valuables.”

Odefa also accused security of being passive and seemingly unconcerned.

But the APC debunked Odefa’s accusations.

Acting Chairman Stanley Okoroemegha said the nine persons were killed in cult clashes.

According to him, the governor has given ultimatum to arrest and prosecute the culprits.

Okoroemegha, who is also Commissioner for Internal Security and Border Peace, said the Umahi-led government believes in freedom of association.

He said: “It is a wrong accusation. There is freedom of association. In fact, Ebonyi remains the number one place where it is being practiced.”

    By Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

Anambra State will, starting next year, enrol 28,246 indigents into a special healthcare fund.

Commissioner for Health Dr Vincent Okpala stated this on Tuesday at a news conference to mark the 2020 International Universal Health Coverage (UHC) Day. The day is themed “Health for All: Protect Everyone”. It is celebrated every December 12.

Okpala said the event allowed the ministry to reflect on how it had fared in achieving UHC, adding that the enrolment was part of government’s efforts at making universal health coverage a reality.

He said: “The government, after meeting its counterpart funding, has received N338 million as its quota of the Federal Government’s Basic Healthcare Provision Fund through the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

“This fund, through the state’s health insurance scheme (ASHIA), is to cater for the health needs of vulnerable persons. Beneficiaries are selected from the 326 wards, including the less-privileged, expectant mothers, under-five children, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

“With this enrolment, our health indices will improve, maternal mortality, infant and neonatal deaths will also reduce.”

  • Okowa inaugurates panel of inquiry into Oleh, Ozoro land dispute

Okowa inaugurates panel of inquiry into Oleh, Ozoro land dispute

    Agency Reporter

Delta Governor, Sen. (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa on Wednesday, inaugurated a seven-man Judicial Panel of Inquiry into the land dispute between Oleh and Ozoro communities in the state.

He said at the ceremony at Government House, Asaba that the panel would determine the remote and immediate causes of the conflict between the parties in Oleh and Ozoro communities.

According to the governor, it is disheartening that after all we have been through as a country and a State throughout this year, our State is now confronted with what is obviously an avoidable conflict arising from land dispute.

He said the dispute between Oleh and Ozoro had lingered on for decades and adding that he was aware of the efforts made by Isoko Development Union (IDU) in resolving the dispute to no avail.

He stated that following claims and counter claims from all the parties involved, there was a clear and present danger that the situation might spiral out of control and lead to breakdown of law and order in Ozoro and Oleh, with the possibility of other communities being caught in the crossfire. As an administration, we cannot allow that to happen.

He added that setting up the enquiry was to prevent the situation from escalating into full-blown communal conflict.

He pointed out that peace building remained one of the cardinal programmes of his administration because it is an incontrovertible fact that real development cannot take place in the absence of peace.

“On Monday October 12, 2020, residents of the State woke up to the horrific news that as much as eleven persons were killed at a farm in Oleh while one person is missing. The news was as numbing as it was inexplicable.

“The government quickly waded in to douse the tension and prevent the situation from degenerating into a full-blown inter communal crisis. Through the local government administration, relevant security agencies, and the traditional institutions, working with the Special Adviser on Peace Building and Conflict Resolution, we have been striving to ensure that there are no reprisal attacks while appealing to those who lost their loved ones to the gruesome act to restrain themselves and keep the peace.

“I am aware that this dispute between Ozoro and Oleh has lingered for decades. I am also aware that the Isoko Development Union has been mediating in the matter. As an administration that believes in the bottom-up approach, we gave our full backing to all the efforts of the IDU to resolve the matter amicably, but to no avail.

“Regrettably, the faceoff took a frightening dimension with the October 12 tragedy, ostensibly over the disputed land. While we commiserate with the bereaved, it is incumbent on us all that we do not play politics with the lives of the dead. Justice must be done and seen to be done in this matter as their cold-blooded murder is purely a criminal act, separate from the boundary dispute.

“Insecurity and violence are not only needless distractions, they also drain the public purse. Whenever there is a breakdown of law and order, funds that could have been deployed to building infrastructure and similar development projects have to be channeled towards procuring peace, even as ongoing projects within the affected communities are stalled.

“In view of the foregoing, the administration considers it exigent to set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to properly investigate/examine the boundary dispute between Ozoro and Oleh, and proffer solutions that would meet the expectations of all the parties involved,” he said.

The Panel which has Justice Marcel Okoh as Chairman, has the following terms of reference:”to identify the parties and/or interest groups in the conflict and the extent of the claim of each party or group to the land in dispute; determine the remote and immediate cause(s) of the conflict between the parties in Ozoro and Oleh Communities.

“to consider any previous effort(s) at settling the dispute between the Ozoro and Oleh Communities and establish the reason(s) for the failure of such efforts.

“to investigate any other matter incidental or related to the foregoing terms of reference which could assist in the resolving the dispute; and to make appropriate recommendations to Government with a view to resolving the dispute.”

Okowa announced that the panel had eight weeks to submit its report and urged the Panel to be mindful that further delay may cause further crisis.

He appealed to all Deltans to remain law abiding, embrace dialogue and peaceful coexistence, and shun all acts inimical to the prosperity, peace, and progress of the State.

The members of the panel are Surv. Dickson Akpoghene, Rtd. Surveyor-General; Mr. William Riebele, Rtd. Permanent Secretary/Town Planner; ACP Dashuwar Abuja; (Representing the Commissioner of Police), Esan Jayeola Damilare; (Representing the Director, State Security Services); Christopher Diai, Esq. Counsel to the Panel and Mrs Angalare Prest-Umukoro who will serve as Member/Secretary.

Responding on behalf of members, the Chairman, Justice Okoh, thanked the governor for the confidence reposed in them by entrusting them with the assignment. “In discharging our duties, we will do so diligently and with the utmost sense of responsibility and fairness, and without any fear or favour,” he said.
