    Lawmaker, constituents fight over leadership

    By Nwanosike Onu, Awka

Residents of Ndiowu, Orumba North I Local Government Area of Anambra State are at logger heads with their representative in the House of Assembly, Emeka Aforka.

The people marched on the Government House and House of Assembly. They carried placards with inscriptions like “Enough is Enough, Ndiowu does not need caretaker committee again”; “Give us account of N20 million from government”; “Governor Willie Obiano please save us from tyrants”. They described Aforka as fraudulent

Youth leader Obiora Mgbemene said some cabals, like the lawmaker, were holding Ndiowu to ransom.

The people insisted that all forms of imposition of candidates during elections must stop. They alleged that the self-styled cabals were threatening the community’s peace and security.

They appealed to the government to acknowledge the town union executives elected on December 26, 2019.

Woman leader Mrs. Obiageli Nwafor said the Oye-Ibagu market they contributed money to build was being claimed by the caretaker committee as built with the N20 million ‘Choose your Project’ from the government.

But Aforka described the protesters as miscreants. He said there must be election, and According to him, only one man was responsible for the crisis in Ndiowu. The man, he said, sued the community and state to court. The matter was still pending.

Aforka said the purported election they referred to in 2019 was cancelled to forestall anarchy, adding that the present caretaker committee had tried to restore peace unsuccessfully.

He described the protest as efforts in futility, saying most of the protesters came to Awka under duress. According to him, they were the people imposing themselves on the community.

Secretary to the State government Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu hailed the protesters for not taking laws into their hands. He said the government would address their grievances.

Disengaged NPA workers demand severance package

    By Elo Edremoda, Warri

Disengaged workers of the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) in Warri, Delta State, have called on the Minister for Transport Rotimi Amaechi and NPA Managing Director Hadiza Bala Usman, to pay their delayed severance package.

The workers, under the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), protested at the entrance of the New NPA in Warri. They threatened to ground activities at the ports if their call is not heeded.

They carried placards with inscriptions like “Warri Port please pay us our severance package, other ports have received theirs since January”; “NPA, why have you not paid our severance package?”.

The protesters, which comprised tally clerks and onboard security operatives, were disengaged in 2015 after a verification exercise. But while their colleagues in other ports had been paid, those in Warri have yet to receive theirs.

Their spokesman Francis Agbudumhe lamented that their unpaid benefits was having a bad effect on members, some of whom are now sick or dead.

He said: “We have lost a lot of our members, some of them are bedridden; many of us have no homes, our children can no longer go to school, money lenders are chasing us here and there.

“We are heavily indebted. Even the money we are expected to get can’t solve any problem after this delay. But we need that money it’s our right.”

Agbudumhe stressed the need for relevant authorities to act before the committee set up to carry out the payment is dissolved.

“This is not a strike, it’s a peaceful protest so that we will get our money to settle our family needs this December. We will not stop until we get that money this December. It will not go beyond December. We will stay put here until we get answers.

“This is NPA facility, they can hear us, they can see us. We are asking NPA to do the needful and give that money out to the committee set up to do the payment.

“Before you know it, that committee will be dissolved because the year is ending and once that committee is dissolved, they will not come together until next year, and we don’t want to lose anybody again.

“We will remain here until they listen to us. If they refuse to listen, operations of the port will be shut down.”

    Erosion sacks Arthur Eze’s community

    By Nwanosike Onu, Awka

President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered that Oye -Ukpo -Oranto road linking Police zone 13 in Dunukofia local government area of Anambra be awarded to cushion the effect of erosion in the area.

The 2.1 kilometre road, which will gulp about N2.2 billion, was facilitated by Hon Tony Nwoye in honour of billionaire oil magnate, Prince Arthur Eze.

The Chief Engineer, Federal Ministry of Works in Anambra State, Chidi Ezeala, said the length of road is taking such amount of money because the erosion problem was considered in the design

Inspecting the road and gully site on Sunday, Nwoye, who represented Anambra East and West Federal Constituency during the last dispensation, said the project was captured in the 2020 federal budget.

He lamented the erosion problem that had sacked many homes in the area, adding the road would link up with the newly created Police zone -13 and the Onitsha -Enugu expressway.

According to Nwoye: “This is a very big project that President Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government wants to execute for the good people of Anambra State especially Ukpo community and other communities around Ukpo.

“As you can see, some of the people who are living here have left their homes because of erosion.

“This was a road that was designed through the instrumentality of the Federal Ministry of Works, Abuja especially the Anambra State office of the ministry.

“Ukpo community will hold accountable, the contractor if work fails to commence within the Christmas period. There will be value for money.

“My humble self who facilitated the design of this road and its capturing in the budget of the federal government, Prince Arthur Eze who used his political weight also and the Minister of Works, Babatunde Fashola, SAN, who vowed that this road must be done, will make sure that there be value for money.

“The BPP has issued a certificate of no objection on October 23 to the Federal Ministry of Works. So, as at yesterday, the ministry was set to go to the federal executive council because the road is more than the approval limit of the ministry. It’s more than N2 billion. That means the road will go to FEC.

“Hopefully, in the 2021 budget that will be passed in December some money would be made available so that funding will not be a hiccup for the contractor.

Asked why he chose roads in Dunukofia instead of his area, he said: “This is not the first time I am doing a road outside my federal constituency. I have done two roads in Ukpo in the past. I have done another road at Ezi Icheke in Ukpo before.

“I have done a road that linked Ukpo and Abagana communities. That was barely three years ago. So, I have done a total of three roads in Ukpo. I have done a road in Onitsha. That was three years ago.

“While I have special interest in Ukpo is because of Prince Arthur Eze who happens to be my boss. He did a lot for me, for my followers and for humanity.

“So, as I am doing in my federal constituency which I once represented, I am also doing here. By next year, I will do roads across every part of Anambra.”

Bianca blasts Igbo leaders’ silence on marginalisation

    By Damian Duruiheoma, Owerri

Former Nigerian ambassador to Spain and wife of the former Biafran leader,   Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, Mrs. Bianca Ojukwu has lashed  out at Igbo leaders for keeping silent on the alleged continuous marginalisation of the people of South East by the federal government.

This is just as Bianca also tongue-lashed  the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and its leadership over lack of interest in posthumous honour to her husband.

Bianca spoke during the ninth edition of Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu memorial ceremony held at Ojukwu Centre Owerri, the Imo State capital.

Ojukwu died in 2011 in London, but nine years down the line, the members of Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra and Biafra Independence Movement founded by Chief Ralph Uwazuruike have consistently organised memorial ceremony for the late Biafra leader.

Ojukwu’s widow, accused Igbo leaders of not talking for their people but being, “in a rat race to be included in the center”, thus leaving the issues affecting the generality of their people.

She stressed the need for the  government to treat Ndigbo fairly in the distribution of the nation’s resources, stating that Ndigbo had been roundly marginalized in the country.

Concern over infant deaths, maternal health in Bayelsa

    By Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

Bayelsa State government has expressed concern over issues bordering on infant mortality rate, antenatal coverage, HIV testing, immunization, nutrition, maternal health, among others in the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr Newton Igwele, expressed the concern on Friday in Yenagoa after receiving the Bayelsa Reproductive Maternal Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) scorecard for third quarter of 2020 presented by state team in collaboration with the United Nation International Children Emergency Fund (UNICEF).

He said the scorecard was an eye-opener that the state still had a lot to do in the area of healthcare delivery.

He said from the scorecard, it was noticed that all the poor healthcare indicators were tied to one thing – maternal care, saying that the state government would do all within its power to cater to the needs of the mothers to change the narrative.

Igwele said: “From the scorecard, everything on nutrition shows that we are not doing enough. So, we need to strengthen it. In immunization, we are also not doing enough. The parameters show that we are on track in the area of tackling malaria.

“However, the situation is like joint demands. They are all tied to one thing – the maternal health. If we tackle the mothers, it will positively impact the other areas. Maternal care coverage is poor and we need to tackle it. We need to improve the number of mothers attending clinics and by so doing, we will improve our health care delivery.”

The Director, Planning Research and Statistics, state Ministry of Health, Dr Beatrice Olomiete, while presenting the Bayelsa RMNCAH scorecard quoted the National Nutrition and Health Survey (NNHS) as saying that Bayelsa recorded no fewer than 3,152 under-five deaths and 101,159 stunted children in 2018.

According to her, 32 in 1,000 children under five years died and 20 per cent of children under the same age bracket had stunted growth.

Olomiete said in the area of antenatal care, only three local governments of Ekeremor, Nembe and Yenagoa made progress while the remaining five LGAs of Brass, Kolokuma/Opokuma, Ogbia, Sagbama and Southern Ijaw were not on track.

She said two LGAs of Ekeremor and Yenagoa recorded 71 and over 90 per cent respectively in HIV testing in antenatal care coverage, while the remaining six councils fared poorly.
