  • Ned Nwoko: Joining APC in a blaze of honour, dignity, without stain

Ned Nwoko: Joining APC in a blaze of honour, dignity, without stain

    BY NOSIKE OGBUENYI

Chinedu Munir Nwoko, popularly known as Ned Nwoko, faces a dicey test entering the New Year as he took the decisive plunge to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC). The PDP which is the ruling party in Delta State is the main opposition party at the centre.

The undercurrents that culminated in Senator Nwoko’s recent decision to quit the PDP have been smoldering for long shortly after the swearing in of Sheriff Oborevwori as the governor of the state in 2023. Now with his latest action, the fate of PDP in Delta State hangs precariously on a cliff hanger.

The PDP in the state has been clinging on the crevices of the disparate quartet of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, the immediate past governor, Ifeanyi Okowa who is also godfather to Mr Oborevwori, Senator Nwoko the influential Delta North senator and the pioneer governor of the State under the present democratic dispensation, James Ibori. The chess game about the future of PDP in the state has been going on in the courtyards of the foursome. Today, the governor can only be sure of his godfather, Mr Okowa’s support.

Mr Ibori was the first to be marginalised after his preferred candidate, Mr David Edevbie was literarily shoved aside by then incumbent Governor Okowa to pave way for anointed candidate, Mr Oborevwori’s emergence in the PDP primaries late in 2022. Since then, the first democratically elected governor in this dispensation, between 1999 and 2007, has been left in the cold by Messrs Oborevwori and Okowa.

Many people are leaving PDP and joining the APC including current elected, appointed and other political office holders too. More significantly, within the Delta North district a large number of people are gravitating towards the APC believing strongly that Anioma State creation can be realized under APC. There are other reasons behind the gale of defections rocking the PDP in the state.

Late last year, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, the daughter of the former governor, who is representing Ethiope East/Ethiope West Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives dumped PDP and joined APC citing marginalisation as her main reason for quitting.

Barely two months after Ibori’s daughter quit the PDP, Senator Nwoko has also announced his intention to leave the party and join the APC. And he is doing so in a blaze of honour and dignity. He is as clean as whistle with no case of corruption to defend. As a self-made multi-billionaire, Senator Nwoko is among the few crop of public officers in the state who have never depended on government contracts and patronage for economic survival.

Born into the royal family of Idumuje-Ugboko kingdom in Aniocha-North local government area of Delta State, Ned Nwoko, right from childhood, was brought up under strict traditional guidance, ethos and discipline. His journey began in the rusty streets of his ancient hometown, Idumuje-Ugboko where he learned the values of hard work, humility, respect and perseverance. Propelled and guided by sublime vision of prosperous future through hard work and a steadfast commitment to his goals, he rose meteorically through the thick and thins of adolescence and youth to exhibit early signs of success and leadership. Having deciphered the early signs of wisdom, courage and adventure in teenage boy, his family wasted no time in sponsoring him abroad to the United Kingdom in pursuit of golden fleece and the honing of his blooming sartorial attributes.

In the UK, the young Nwoko grabbed the opportunity for pursuit of academic excellence with both hands. After earning his first degree in Law and History at the University of Keele, UK, he proceeded to Kings College, University of London where he obtained his Masters degree in Law. He was called to the English Bar as a member of the famous Lincolns Inn where the world famous jurist, Lord Denin was. He subsequently requalified as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales. A position he still holds till today. There are less than 500 Africans holding this position globally.

Senator Nwoko began his legal practice in the UK where he flourished as an international attorney. At the peak of his legal practice, as solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales, he had one of the biggest law firms owned by a black man in the UK. Returning to Nigeria, he leveraged his education and variegated experience to build a successful empire that spans various sectors, including real estate, telecommunications, tourism, education, sports, entertainment and agriculture. His efforts have not only enriched his life but also contributed significantly to the advancement of economic landscape of Nigeria.

As a senator, Nwoko has been a voice for the youth, advocating for policies that foster innovation, education, and entrepreneurship. His philanthropic initiatives focus mainly on empowering the next generation, ensuring they have the tools necessary to navigate an ever-changing world. He can be aptly described as a global citizen and an amazing pro-people leader.

Before his foray into active politics in Nigeria way back in 1998, he had already established an enviable reputation as a successful international lawyer and businessman.  Senator Nwoko had a successful tenure as an honorable member of the House of Representatives between 1999 and 2003. Twenty years after, he returned to National Assembly as the Senator representing Delta North district, otherwise known as Anioma in 2023.

Senator Nwoko’s independent and uncompromised background places him on moral high grounds to stand straight and speak for the people no matter whose ox is gored. But the non-profitable pro-people lane he is treading is a narrow and hazardous path in a clime like Delta State where speaking truth to power is often deemed as disloyalty to the ruling party and the established system. To the loyalists of the system and their gadflies, he stands condemned for not only breaking loose from the established system but also disrupting the status quo brazenly.

But Senator Nwoko seems unfazed by the risks of being on the lonely side. Doing what he perceives as the right thing for his people is his ultimate satisfaction, irrespective of the sacrifices and losses that might go with it. His position aligns with an injunction in the Holy Book which says, “Enter through the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the road broad that leads to destruction, and there are many going through it.” This is a popular quote in chapter seven, verses 13 and 14 of the Biblical book of Matthew.

Judging by his antecedents, Senator Nwoko would literarily use his bare head to break the coconut for his people of Anioma underscoring why he is fighting for the improvement of their wellbeing. His recent open call on Delta State government to intervene and ameliorate the suffering of his people through provision of essential amenities and infrastructures has put him on collision course with the state governor and his godfather along with their coterie of supporters, praise singers and associates.

But Senator Nwoko apparently feels happier and at peace traversing the narrow gate and connecting with the people irrespective of social status. His humanness, simplicity, empathy and open door orientation makes him to blend with the high and the low. Though highly rated as one of the most influential and active lawmakers in the present 10th National Assembly, his exalted position has not made him to disconnect with the people. His simple lifestyle and insistence on justice and care for the common man are among the factors that set him apart from the typical upper elite politicians and public officers who follow the broad way that prioritises self interest and aggrandizement.

He says he cannot afford to stand akimbo looking the other way while majority of the people wallow in deprivation unleashed by bad governance and systemic corruption. He is immersed in the urgency of now with his binoculars focused on what could be done to better the lives of the people, starting with his Anioma constituents, Delta State and Nigeria at large.

It is record that Senator Nwoko has consistently delivered for his constituents through diverse ways such as scholarship programmes for students across Delta State; road construction and rehabilitation; installation of solar street lights and boreholes; establishment of Africa’s first Sports University in Idumuje-Ugboko in Aniocha North LGA; securing of federal job placements for Delta North indigenes; promoting of tourism, sponsorship of free medical outreach, surgeries and equipping primary healthcare centres, empowerment of youths, women and vulnerable members of society among others.

Senator Nwoko’s affinity with the people made him to bypass the choice locations of Abuja, Lagos, Benin or Enugu to site the pioneer Sports University, which he founded in Idumuje-Ugbo, a small ancient town in Delta State. He rebuffed all entreaties by friends and consultants against building the multi-billion naira institution in a developed city stressing that he was motivated by the need to bring development to his place of birth rather than quick profit and ego.

Such rare gestures and traits define the iconic lawmaker’s love for his root which defies the allures and high investment returns of urban centres. They also capture his innate qualities of courage of conviction, transcendental influence and popularity. It is quite evident that milk of human kindness flows naturally in his veins.

There are other impactful strides of the towering Senator which place him head and shoulders above his peers as a great leader and achiever. These include the championing of malaria eradication campaign in Africa that shifted emphasis from curative to preventive and eradication approach, securing the Paris Club multi-billion dollars refund as well as support for the needy through poverty alleviation projects and empowerment of youths, women and vulnerable members of society.

Even after leaving the National Assembly in 2003, he remained handy. His dedication to public service has earned him countless accolades and awards. As a senator, he is representing his people with aplomb and distinction, championing the cause of his constituents and working assiduously to promote their welfare. His leadership has been characterised by empathy, wisdom, and a deep understanding of the needs of his people.  The contributions to society by him are a testament to his remarkable character as he has always been there for all irrespective of gender, race, creed, social status or political affiliations.

Senator Nwoko has been a dependable pillar for the youths, advocating and championing policies that foster innovation, education, and entrepreneurship. His philanthropic initiatives focus on empowering the next generation, ensuring they have the necessary tools to navigate an ever-changing world.

His undiluted commitment to good governance is the driving force behind his strident advocacy of Delta North’s development and fair deal from the state government. Yet this disposition is what often puts him on collision course with many gladiators in the state who are driven by contrary considerations.

Beyond the confines of Anioma, for long, Senator Nwoko has carved a niche for himself as a leader who consistently demonstrates his commitment to serving others, regardless of status. All through his illustrious career, he has shown a remarkable ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds. His exceptional leadership qualities and capacity have been evident at all time, whether on or off the political stage.

An attempt was made to coerce him to eat the humble pie when he was suddenly called upon to move a motion for a vote of confidence on the state governor, Mr Oborevwori during a PDP stakeholders meeting. This is the same administration he has accused of underperforming as far infrastructures provision in Delta North is concerned. Senator Nwoko declined to move the motion attracting the ire of the governor who was present at the meeting.

Senator Nwoko is not an anyhow politician, the type that keeps mute in the face of injustice.  He does not play boardroom politics to the detriment of his constituents, especially where the developmental needs of his people are at stake. He is not disposed to being a follower of a system that denies the people needed infrastructure and real poverty alleviation projects. This may well be the reason why Ned is genuinely loved by the people.

Again, Senator Nwoko cannot be tamed by the ‘system’ to turn his back on his people and ignore the pains, hardships, and slavery conditions his constituents are subjected to over the years, by successive governments of the party they have supported so long. He would not turn a blind eye to the dehumanizing condition of his people on the altar of party politics. For him, the state has had enough of the dynasty that had deprived it of true dividends of democracy and the APC comes handy as the vehicle to effect the long overdue change in Delta North and the state.

Governor Eno: My focus is good governance for A’Ibom, not political gamesmanship

    …affirms support for Tinubu’s policies

Governor Umo Eno has reaffirmed his commitment to delivering good governance to the people of Akwa Ibom State, emphasizing that he will not be distracted by political gamesmanship.

The governor made this assertion in a press release issued by his Chief Press Secretary, addressing allegations made by a faceless political group identified as “Concerned Members of the All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State.”

The group had published an advertorial in which the governor’s office dismissed as a baseless attempt at blackmail.

Refuting the allegations, the Chief Press Secretary stated, “Our attention has been drawn to an advertorial published in The Nation newspaper of January 22, 2025, by an amorphous group under the name Concerned Members of the All Progressives Congress in Akwa Ibom State.

“The authors, in what was purely a politically motivated hatchet job, maliciously concocted a rich cocktail of lies and blackmail against the Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, PhD.”

Governor Eno reiterated his administration’s resolve to remain focused on the state’s development agenda and not be swayed by politically motivated distractions.

The statement noted that the intent of such advertorial was to strain the warm relationship between the Governor and President Tinubu, the Senate President and the Minister of Petroleum.

“The undisguised intent of the purveyors of the inane advertorial was to cause a strain in the widely acknowledged warm relationship the Governor enjoys with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and, by extension, the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON, and the Honourable Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), ObongEmem Ekperikpe Ekpo.”

The statement described the claims in the advertorial as outlandish and obtuse.

“Some of the lies and falsehoods they pushed in the advertorial are so outlandish and obtuse that we can’t even repeat them here.

“We, however, wish to state categorically that Governor Umo Eno, PhD, has not formed any such clandestine alliance as the group falsely and maliciously stated.”

The statement expressed dismay over the advertorial, describing it as a deliberate attempt to create distractions at a time when the President is touring the nation to rally support for his bold economic initiatives—initiatives that Governor Eno firmly supports.

“It is unfortunate to note that while President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is rallying the nation to support his bold and audacious economic plans aimed at taking our nation out of the current economic challenges—which Governor Umo Eno has enthusiastically and openly endorsed and has severally canvassed support for—this faceless group could maliciously concoct such lies, falsehoods, and blackmail against the Governor.”

The release stated that the such faceless group hate the peace spirit of bipartisan of the governor.

“It is obvious that the promoters of this faceless group hate the current peace, amity, and spirit of bipartisanship which Governor Eno has promoted in the State.

“This spirit of working across party lines certainly has canceled out their deeply entrenched selfish interest of stoking tensions in the State, and thereafter profiting from the chaos and unnecessary political wars they had helped ignite.”

The Chief Press Secretary categorically stated that Governor is in full support of President Bola Tinubu and maintains robust relationship with the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

“Truth be told, Governor Eno is focused on working collaboratively with the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government, the National Assembly led by Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, our son, to achieve the Arise Agenda for the betterment of the people of Akwa Ibom State. This is the time for governance and not for political gamesmanship.

Governor Eno respects and supports President Tinubu, GCFR, and believes that if his administration succeeds, we all succeed. He will continue to support the President as well as the Senate President, Distinguished Senator Godswill Akpabio, GCON.”

The release equally added that Governor Eno, “…enjoys a warm relationship with the Honourable Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), ObongEmem Ekperikpe Ekpo, and both are working together to bring development to the State, especially in the oil and gas sector, of which Akwa Ibom State is a leading producer.”

The statement called on the faceless group to rather applaud and support such robust relationship rather than using it to score cheap political goals.

“This great collaboration should be applauded rather than being pilloried by a faceless group of political jobbers to score cheap political points.

“The insidious and malicious advertorial should be dismissed for what it represents: a hatchet job by enemies of peace and tranquility.”

Otti announces plans to employ 2,500 teachers in Abia

Abia state governor, Alex Otti has announced massive recruitment of teachers for the basic and post-basic schools in Abia state.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu during a media chat at the State Government House in Umuahia, the state capital said that the 2,500 teachers to be employed across the state were to fill vacancies already existing in the school system.

“The state government has also concluded plans for massive employment of teachers in the state for both primary and secondary schools. This of course is another pointer to how important this sector is to the governor,” Prince Kanu stated.

Prince Kanu equally announced that the government has commenced the full implementation of the out-of-school children policy informing that school marshals have been appointed to work with the harmonized task force in the state to achieve the objective of the government in that regard.

He noted that having commenced compulsory free education for pupils and students of basic education, there was a need to ensure the out-of-school children policy was made effective.

The Information Commissioner also announced that the government has introduced mathematics clinics for students in examination classes of JSS 3 and SS3 which will be held on Tuesday and Thursday of every week between the hours of 7-7:45.00 am to fully realize the STEM policy of the present administration.

“The Abia state Ministry of Basic Education has fully commenced with the enforcement of the Out of School Children Policy initiative with the appointment of Education Marshalls.

“Also to strengthen its programme for our schools the state government has introduced a Mathematics Clinic that would run from Tuesdays through Thursdays to enhance the teaching of Mathematics.

“Mathematics we know is very basic to the realisation of the STEM subjects. STEM subjects involve Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics and Mathematics is the bedrock for the development of science and technology,” Prince Kanu maintained.

Contributing, the Commissioner for Basic Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi stressed the essence of quality education and said that it cannot be achieved without teachers.

“There is no way we can talk about quality education without teachers. In our schools, we don’t have a sufficient number of teachers to handle most of the subjects.

“Before now, there have been speculations all over the place about the employment of teachers. It is now, within the week we are going to make public the modalities.

“It is not going to be a process where you bring your application to the Ministry or whoever. We are going to have a platform where we do it online.

According to Elder Ubochi, enforcement of the free and compulsory basic education policy of the state government is essential as education is pertinent to Dr. Alex Otti led administration.

“To make this work, the Ministry established what we called ‘Education Marshalls’. They will work like a task force but not in the same modality.

“The essence of setting up this group is to move around during school hours, any child that is of school age seen around will be picked up, not to be beaten or embarrassed but be taken to the school nearest to him or her.

“But before he or she is taken to the school, we will use the child to locate the parents or guardians or whoever has been keeping the child and we will be able to find out why he is holding back the child from going to school,” Ubochi clarified.

He equally explained that the reason for the STEMS education programme is that the government wants to build confidence in the external examination or certificate class students of JSS 3 and SS 3.

He said they would be resuming classes from 7,00 am before the normal school period commences and that they would be learning Mathematics from seasoned teachers in the morning and extend of closure time from 2 pm to 4 pm for other science subjects such as Biology and Physics, Chemistry and English.

Crisis: Royal family begs governor to release 86-year-old blind monarch, son

The family of the traditional ruler of Akpakwume Ancient Kingdom in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State has appealed to Governor Peter Mbah, to release the detained monarch of the kingdom, Igwe Ekwueme Odenigbo, and his son, Moses Ekwueme.

The monarch and his son were remanded for alleged conspiracy to commit arson, promoting local war, assault on police officers on lawful duty, and malicious property damage, amongst other charges.

But, the family, who spoke through Pastor Solomon Ekwueme and Ozioma Roseline Ekwueme, the monarch’s first son and daughter, said the monarch and their brother were not connected to the crisis that led to the recent burning of the house of Chief Livinus Okolo in the community.

“It is truly heartbreaking for us to be called back to Enugu with the news that our aged and blind father, a retired elder in the Redeemed Christian Church of God and the king of an entire community, has been locked up by the Nigerian Police and charged to a Magistrate Court and subsequently sent to the prison at the behest of a man that has been nothing short of a terror to the entire people of Akpakwume community, Mr Livinus Okolo Alias Zion,” they said.

They recalled that their father was brought to Enugu for medical attention after his palace was attacked by hoodlums who stole his office staff of office, certificate of recognition, and money on December 23rd, 2024.

“As a result of this issue that happened on the 23rd of December, our parents were brought to Enugu for medical checkups and treatment. After spending a couple of days in the hospital, they returned home.”

They were not in the village at the time this incident took place. Our father is a peace-loving man and has never encouraged any sort of violence in all his years as the ruler of our community.

“While In Enugu, On Thursday, 9th January 2025, the Nigerian Police invited our father to come with our brother Moses Ekwueme for questioning because of a petition they received from Chief Livinus Okolo with regards to the burning of his house. Ifoh, in the interview, however, said that the purported plan by Otti to dump LP for APC was farther from the truth.

“It is a mere rumour and I hope it remains so. For us in Labour Party, we are in touch with our governor, Dr Alex Otti, and he has assured us that he is not going anywhere, ahead of 2027.

“We believe that he will stay with us, irrespective of some of the issues which we are working hard to resolve,” he said.

The national publicity secretary, who said that defection from one political party to another was nothing new in any democratic setting, however, said that Otti was not thinking about teaming up with the ruling APC.

“The courts have come up several times to make interpretation as regards Section 84 of the 1999 Constitution and many people who had defected at one time or the other had been challenged in court.

“So, if five governors are planning to defect, it won’t be a new thing, as it had happened in the past,” he said.

Ifoh attributed the rumoured defection to the fact that some governors in the opposition had been having some challenges in controlling their states.

He insisted that the speculated rumour of the only Labour Party governor had no substance or validity.

“We are good in Labour Party and our governor is with us, and we are hoping that by 2027, we will have more governors in our fold,” he said.
NAN recalls that a recent media report indicated that the body language of some governors, particularly from PDP was tilting toward moving to the ruling APC.

The report further indicated that some of the governor have either been visiting President Bola Tinubu privately or have him inaugurating projects in their states.

It was also reported that the Chairman of Progressives Governors’ Forum, Sen. Hope Uzodimma of Imo, had been wooing the opposition governors to join APC.

Mr Nwafor, who was the Chairman of the empowerment committee noted that the empowerment was equitably distributed among the four local government areas.

He said: ‘The materials were distributed to people who actually needed it. This will have great economic impact on the lives of the beneficiaries and their families as it will boost the businesses of the beneficiaries.

Mr Ugama hailed the transparency with which the distribution was carried out.

He also hailed the lawmaker for helping to secure over 60 job opportunities for some of the constituents.

” I witnessed firsthand, direct beneficiaries, people who have no connection with him. Of particular interest for me was a young lady who said she learnt tailoring but did nothave the money to purchase the sewing machine to start.

“I approached the Senator and said these are the kind of people that should benefit from this. And he approved it immediately. The economic impact of this cannot be over-emphasized.

“If someone has been jobless for a long time and is given a tricycle that is worth over 5 million naira for him to start up life, it will help him if he is diligent enough.

“One of them, came with his wife, his two kids, and his parents. When I interviewed him, he said he had graduated for years and had nothing doing. But he reached out to the senator, sent his CV to him, and he got a job. He is presently serving in one of the firms in Port Hacourt. So that is a big boost to him and his  family”, Mr Ugama added.
