The outreach provided free tests on HIV/AIDS, hypertension, diabetes, and eye-related ailments, treatment of malaria, typhoid, and provision of free eyeglasses free of any charge, among other things.

Kanu commended the founder of HannahMay Foundation and wife of immediate past governor of the state, Mrs Mercy Orji for sustaining the NGO even after her husband’s tenure ended.

He said, “Any patient who is diagnosed with any ailment which could not be handled at the outreach, such as surgery, such patient would be referred to a reputable hospital for surgical operation which the foundation would sponsor”.

Earlier in her speech the founder of the NGO, Mrs Orji said that the medical outreach has become an annual ritual to assist indigent persons who cannot afford to pay for medical services.

Mrs Orji who disclosed that one of the challenges facing the foundation is funding and used the forum to commend her husband, Senator Theodore Orji for his assistance which she noted had gone a long way to sustain the free medical outreach.

She also gave kudos to other philanthropists and other donor agencies abroad who send drugs, eyeglasses and other medical equipment that have helped to sustain the programme and called on others to lend a helping hand to enable the foundation to continue taking care of the needy people in the society.

Mrs Orji pledged to continue to fund the foundation in its effort to ensure that the indigent people in the society are always taken care of medically, stressing that one of the best things that could happen to people is to give them medical attention when they need it most.

Mrs Orji also called on the well to do in the state, other donor agencies and corporate bodies to venture into the area of helping the indigent people in the society as one of the ways to give back to the society.

  • Philanthropist honoured with chieftaincy title

    Philanthropist honoured with chieftaincy title

The traditional honour of Ukpaka na AgbaluOra I of Aguleri that was bestowed on Chief Joseph Ukeji, the Chairman/CEO of Ejison Group of Companies, by His Royal Majesty Eze C.N. Idigo (Ogalagidi II) and traditional ruler of Aguleri, is truly a befitting one for an accomplished businessman and an undisputed philanthropist.

Touching lives positively in our society can be described as the trademark of Chief Joseph I. Ukeji. He is an epitome of humility and as a true Christian; he abides by the Biblical admonition of not allowing your left hand to know what your right hand is giving as an offering.

A research into the lifestyle of Chief Ukeji, fondly called Chimalunzu by his admirers, revealed that he has empowered a lot of people in our society and that many of them are doing well in their various businesses. He is a silent achiever and one of the most successful businessmen in Igbo land. He built his business success foundation with truth and hard work.

His business partners describe him as a reliable man whose word is his bond. He does not abuse business opportunities, rather he utilises them very well. He is also not a trouble-maker hence the reason he does not like treading on trouble paths. He is a lover of good governance and that is the reason he gave Governor Obiano overwhelming support in the last governorship election.

He is not a government contractor but supported the governor during the last governorship election because of the good works the governor is doing in Anambra State. In a chat with him at his G.R.A. Onitsha residence, he revealed that he had already concluded arrangements on relocating his business from Anambra State to Lagos State because of insecurity during the administration of Mr. Peter Obi but that he changed his mind when Governor Obiano’s administration security initiatives started yielding fruitful results.

He stated that security is the bedrock of sustainable development and that any government that ensured the security of lives and properties of the people deserves commendation.

Chief Ukeji as a businessman is always focused on doing the right thing for the progress of his business and he abhors anything that will soil his hard-earned reputation. He has made giant strides in the business world. He obviously succeeded in a terrain where many failed because as a child of God, he put God first in everything he does.

He always credits his business successes to the good work of God in his life and the support of his amiable wife, Lady Loretta Ukeji (Adadioranma of Oraukwu).

At this juncture, permit me to humbly use this medium to reel off Chief Ukeji profile.

Chief Ukeji (KSM), was born 58 years ago to the Ukeji family in Ottah Village of Oraukwu community in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State.

He had his primary education at Obianazonwu Memorial Primary School now Holy Trinity Primary School, Onitsha. His higher education was cut short due to the early death of his father. He did not allow his father’s early death to weigh him down, rather he trudged on like a Spartan to achieve success in a world where many failed on flimsy excuse.

Chief Ukeji had his business tutelage under his maternal uncle, Chief Andrew, Ichie Diji I of Oraukwu.

After the apprenticeship, he began his own business in Onitsha with N4, 000 as a textile merchant. His love and quest for education made him to combine business and pursuit of education.

He has attended various business seminars and courses locally and internationally. He has built a successful business conglomerate in Nigeria known as Ejison Group of Companies. The firms are into oil and gas, manufacturing and consumer goods. He is an Ozo title holder from Oraukwu and not known with the habit of accepting traditional title offers from traditional rulers.

He accepted the chieftaincy honour of Ukpaka na-Agbalu Ora I of Aguleri because of his love for Governor Obiano and also because of his respect for Aguleri traditional institution as the cradle of Igbo race.

Chief Ukeji is married to Lady Loretta Ukeji and they have children. A lot of people have benefited from his philanthropic gestures. Because of his benevolence, he has been honoured with several awards.

He has an undying love for empowering the less-privileged. Based on these, His Royal Majesty Eze C. N. Idigo and the entire Aguleri Royal Cabinet were right in their decision to bestow the chieftaincy honour of Ukpaka na-Agbalu Ora on Chief Ukeji.

The honour is an encouragement to him for all his philanthropic gestures towards the development of our society. Chief Ukeji has done a lot to better the lives of the less-privileged individuals in the society and he deserves all the accolades and honours he received as a result of his kindness to his people. More power to his elbows.

  • APC chief to Igbo: don’t be distracted by Obasanjo’s letter

a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief Livinus Okwara has advised Ndigbo to ignore former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s letter to President Muhammadu Buhari and support the President’s re-election in 2019.

Okwara who is also the CEO of Rimax Computers, said that Obasanjo’s sudden support for the Igbo presidency is deceitful, adding that the Igbo have a better chance of realising their age-long ambition of producing Nigeria’s president in 2023 with Buhari’s support.

He said, “Obasanjo cannot be trusted. His push for Igbo presidency in 2019 will not favour the Igbo our best bet is 2023 and the only party that guarantee Igbo presidency come 2023 is the APC. My advice is that the Igbo should vote massively for Buhari come 2019 to secure our chance for 2023. When I was coordinating Buhari’s campaign in the Southeast in 2015 I told our people that Buhari was going to win but majority did not believe but it came to pass and concerning the Igbo Presidency I told them to forget about 2019 so that we can allow Buhari to finish two terms and assist us in 2023″.

Commenting further on the former President’s letter, Okwara said that the accusation of non-performance against Buhari is unfair, adding that “Nigeria’s problem cannot be solved overnight. Obasanjo’s letter is self-serving, he came to power and saw that there were certain areas of the constitution that the people were not happy with but he did not do anything about it and now he is fighting President Buhari who is fighting hard to fix the rot he caused in the system”.

  • Suspects held by Abia police

    Suspects held by Abia police

The Abia State Commissioner of Police (CP) Michael Ogbizi has paraded three gangs of suspected armed robbers, kidnappers and child traffickers said to have been terrorising the state for a long time.

Speaking while parading the suspects in Umuahia, the state capital, Ogbizi said that one of the gangs allegedly led by Stanley Ifeanyi was arrested in Aba, the state’s commercial hub, with police uniforms, police bulletproof vest, AK 47 rifle, one single-barrel gun, and one locally made pistol, among others.

Ogbizi said that the gang has been terrorising the people of Aba for a long time and that the police had been on their trail.

He said that the command is out to arrest people of such character and make the state free for people to come in and invest, assuring the residents of their security and safety of their property at all times.

When The Nation questioned Ifeanyi, he said that he bought the police materials from one police man at Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, at the cost N20,000.

“I have never robbed with police uniform before but I bought them to use them to rob,” Ifeanyi said.

The next gang the CP paraded was said to be the which waylaid the family of Mr James Kwubiri Okpara, the state commissioner for Housing while on their way back from a trip abroad.

Ogbizi said that the robbers robbed them of all their valuables, “Since the incident we have been after them as we are determined to ensure that armed robbery and such incidents are completely reduced to the barest minimum in the state”.

He said that the three-man gang waylaid the commissioner’s family and had been terrorising the people of Abayi and Osisioma areas of Aba.

“With the arrest of this notorious gang of armed robbers, the residents of these areas can now sleep with their two eyes closed,”Ogbizi said.

The Abia police boss also paraded a notorious child trafficker known simply as Nma, who has been under police surveillance for years now, saying that when the police raided her place that 13 underage pregnant girls were rescued.

Ogbizi said that the girls were in various stages of pregnancy and were malnourished, stressing that since their rescue the state government in conjunction with the police have been taking care of their feeding and medical bills.

He said that Nma would be charged for murder, child trafficking and kidnapping, “She may have been evading arrest and prosecution for a long time but this time it will no longer be business as usual as she will be made to face the full wrath of the law”.

In her reaction, Nma said that she has been running a maternity home at her Isiala Ngwa North council area for the past seven years and denied selling children born in her maternity.

Nma said that she is a registered nurse and those girls are always brought to her place by those who want to help them, “Whenever they come I always ask them to bring their guardians before they are taken in”.

The CP also recovered a Volkswagen Golf car with the registration number AQ 26-UMA which was snatched from its owner among other items such as Plasma TV and others.

  • Model for oil firms-host relations

    Model for oil firms-host relations

Against the backdrop of acrimonious relationship of oil firms and host communities, SUNNY NWANKWO reports that Total Exploration and Production Nigeria Limited (TEPNG) has built and handed over two-bedroom flats to residents of an oil-producing community in Abia State.

The relationship is hardly ever cordial, filled with broken promises, tales of exploitation and neglect.

In Owaza in Ukwa West Local Government Area of Abia State, that used to be the scenario. In an earlier interview with this paper, the traditional ruler of the community, Eze Levi Nworgu said,

“Our youths are unemployed. There are no good roads here, no electricity and not a single empowerment in our community by the oil-producing companies in our community.

“We need varsity scholarship for our youths. We don’t have good drinking water here. We must go down to SPDC flow which is almost 2km from here just to fetch water. Owaza is the largest land operation of SPDC in both Southeast and Southsouth and this community is nothing to write home about since 1958. No good schools or even learning facilities. A university will not be bad here.

“Total also has the highest gathering point of gas here in Owaza. They commissioned the biggest gas plant in West Africa here in Owaza. We have been calling them for EIA (environmental impact assessment), but they have refused to answer us. Our youths don’t know how to carry guns. We, Owaza people, don’t use guns and so is Asa. We are calling them to take advantage of this peace negotiation we are calling them for to get things fixed in this community.”

Things are changing. Owaza residents now have something to cheer: two-bedroom flats built and handed over to them by TEPNG.

The gesture elicited much fanfare in celebration of their new acquisitions. TEPNG collaborated with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) on the project.

The event attracted several traditional rulers including HRM Eze Dr. Jonathan Ezere, Eze Igiri of Igiriukwu community, Eze Christian Ikemefule Ukaegbu, Eze Ozuruoha II of Isi Etiti community, and HRM Eze Young N. Ogbonna, Eze Isiala II of Ipu West community also had the presence of TEPNG management.

The Nation gathered that apart from the flats handed over to the community, Total is also handling several other projects for the people of Owaza.

In a keynote address, the General Manager, JV Onshore Field Operation of TEPNG, Mr. Linne Ludovic said Owaza people greatly cherished the project, seeing it as probably one of the best things to happen in the community.

He added that the project was awarded to community-nominated vendors in 2015, and that it was completed in 2017. He als said the objective of the project was to help the benefiting communities to generate revenue for self-sustainability.

Ludovic said that as a responsible organisation, TEPNG would in fulfillment of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and continue to partner with its host communities for the development of the communities.

“We have a policy to honour all commitments freely entered with our host and neighbouring communities and other stakeholders. The tradition is to ensure that such engagements are met within a reasonable timeframe in order to maintain our integrity and build confidence with all stakeholders.”

In their separate goodwill messages, the traditional rulers HRM Eze Dr. Jonathan Ezere, Eze Igiri of Igiriukwu autonomous community, Eze Christian Ikemefule Ukaegbu, Eze Ozuruoha II of Isi Etiti autonomous community and HRM Eze Young N. Ogbonna, Eze Isiala II of Ipu West autonomous community commended the company for starting and finishing the projects. The added that they have started experiencing good relationship with the company.

Eze Ezere said they want to see more of the projects and called on them to hasten up efforts to complete the construction of a town hall.

He said if there is light and development in the Owaza community, their youths would be employed and there would be fewer chances of the youths taking to crime.

According to Ezere, they would rent out the flats and use the funds realised to solve the needs of the community, stressing that they have equally worked out a mechanism to check abuse of the facility and funds realised from the project.

He also demanded that the company do more for the community as the economic and social contributions of the community to the state and the federal government  cannot be overemphasised.

  • Girl jumps off fourth-floor in fire escape

Girl jumps off fourth-floor in fire escape

There was a fire on the fourth floor, and she jumped from the balcony, sustaining severe injuries on the concrete below.

That is the fate of Miss Chidubem Nwankwo, a student of Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology (ASCOHSMAT) Aba, Abia State.

Miss Nwankwo, who hails from Okigwe in Imo State, has been lying in her hospital bed since the incident.

It was gathered that the fire started at about 6.00pm on December 16, 2017. Occupants of her flat, and others ran in different directions as a huge smoke enveloped the apartment. The facility is an off-campus female hostel of ASCOHSMAT.

The smoke was said to have come from a burning cable at the entrance of the apartment.

in panic, Miss Nwankwo climbed the balusters in the balcony of her apartment and was hanging on a rail preparatory to jumping down when neighbours and passersby shouted that she should not jump as they were making every effort to put off the fire.

A resident of the area told our reporter that at about 6.15pm when they heard shouts of help from the students’ hostel, they rushed to the scene to see the back flat of the fourth floor on fire.

The man who spoke anonymously said, “As we tried to put out the fire and rescue the students who were trapped inside, we noticed that one of them had already made an attempt to jump down and we pleaded with her not to make that dangerous move as we are doing everything possible to put out the fire and rescue them.”

However, before the fire could be put out, the girl, in her early 20s, had jumped down, landing on the concrete floor.

Miss Nwankwo sustained multiple injuries in both legs and was rushed to a private hospital located in the area.

Miss Nwankwo, while narrating how she jumped from the fourth floor, said that the smoke from the fire that started from the entrance to the apartment was so choking that it was difficult for them to breathe.

She said as the fire was advancing and there appeared not to be any help, she decided to jump down to save her life.

The girl said when help came and people were shouting at her not to jump, she was already in a fix as her hands which had hung on the concrete slab were becaming weak and could no more carry her. She fell off, she said.

Nwankwo said she was responding to treatment, adding that she might have a surgical operation on her right leg for multiple fractures.

Efforts to reach officials of ASCOHSMAT on the issue were  not fruitful, but a staff of the institution, who craved for anonymity because he was not allowed to speak to the press on the matter, admitted that some of their students live in the off campus hostel, though he denied knowledge of the incident.

Investigations revealed that earlier in the year, there was another fire incident at the hostel which was caused by a cooking gas, but it was promptly put out by neighbours before it could cause any harm.

A House of Representatives member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, Ossy Prestige has visited Miss Nwankwo, promising to pay her medical bill.

The medical director of the hospital Dr. Akunne-Wariso described Miss Nwankwo’s survival as divine, saying she was responding to treatment and recuperating faster than was thought.

Prestige encouraged Dr. Akunne-Wariso and his team not to relent in the effort to get Miss Nwankwo was back on her feet as soon as possible to enable her return to her normal life and continue her education.

Prestige also promised to give every necessary financial support in order to make sure that Miss Nwankwo gets all required medical attention.

He also interacted with other patients and encouraged them to hang on and look up to God as their source of healing. The lawmaker equally offered financial assistance to them.

Ndigbo Media Forum (which started as Ohanaeze Media Forum in 2012) is an umbrella body of practicing journalists from Igboland with members drawn from print, electronic and online platforms in Nigeria and the Diaspora.

Rising from its first executive council meeting in 2018, which held at Marble Brand Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos, the group in a communiqué approved a series of enlightenment projects to sensitise the Igbo people on the need to participate and choose the kind of leaders that would shape their destiny.

The communiqué  issued  after the  meeting  read in part: “We recognise the onerous task of uniting the Igbo people professionally bestowed on us as practicing media people, and have unanimously agreed that the time to enlighten our people on what political choices mean is now.

“In this vein, the Ndigbo Media Forum shall be hosting a Leadership Summit, which will be broadly reported as a way of informing our people on possible political options and their implications. • Ebonyi road reconstructed, 22 years after

Ebonyi road reconstructed, 22 years after

In much disrepair, having been built 22 years ago, the 1.7km Uwana Road in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, is coming back to life. The state government is reconstructing the road built by the Premier of the defunct Eastern Nigeria, Dr Akanu Ibiam.

The road leads to the palace of the late Ibiam who, until his death in 1995, was the Ezeogo of the Unwana Kingdom.

The road was left unattended since his demise.

It was therefore not surprising that the people of the area came out en masse to witness the flag-off performed by the state governor David Umahi through the Ebonyi Roads Maintain Agency (EBROMA).

The women and youths danced and rejoiced with the chairman of the council and Umahi’s Senior Special Assistant on Roads Maintenance, Ali Odefa who led his Ebroma team to the event.

Mr Odefa, said the reconstruction would last for a maximum of six weeks, adding that the  project costs N100m

He said the present government was committed to bringing needed development to Unwana, the country home of late Dr. Akanu Ibiam, adding that the late statesman meant a lot to Ebonyi State and Nigeria in general.

Umahi promised that by the time the road would be fully reconstructed, street light would also be extended to it to enhance business and night life in the area.

He explained that the road would be constructed on concrete pavement such that the quality would last for more than one hundred years before requiring any maintenance.

He noted that the state of the road was very bad and unbefitting as a road that leads to Akanu Ibaim compound, hence, the reconstruction.

He said, “It is a rigid concrete road with about 10.3 meter drain to drain. So, it is a good road and upon completion, it should have a life span of about a hundred years. None of those living today is going to see it collapse,” he said.

The governor further said the borehole which was sunk along the road will be donated to the community on completion of the road construction by Ebroma.

Speaking, Uchenna Ibiam, the Coordinator of Ubeyi Development Centre, thanked the governor for keeping his promises to the people of Unwana.

Ibiam said in the past, people came and took their votes and ran away but when Umahi came, he said he was going to transform Unwana and he had kept to the promise.

He assured the governor that the people of Unwana would reciprocate by fully supporting his reelection come 2019.

He urged the people to ensure they obtain their voters card to be able to vote for the Governor.

Also speaking, Princess Allu Ibiam, the regent of Unwana community and first daughter of late Dr. Akanu Ibiam, said she was impressed by the developmental strides of the governor as well as the manner Umahi was carrying Unwana community along.

Others who spoke including the council chairman of Afikpo North LGA, Hon. Oko Enyim; Lecturer with Ebonyi state University Abakalikk, Prof. Egwu U. Egwu among others, praised Governor Umahi for bringing development to Unwana community.

The elated people of Unwana community came out in their large number to witness the flag off of the road.
