Food for thought as Ndigbo eat new yam

    Remember the homeland.

That was the message that sank in as the Igbo in Ikeja, Lagos State, chewed the new yam. It was not just the day of the king of crops, as they refer to yam; it was also the Igbo culture day. The feast was led by Eze Ndigbo of Ikeja, Eze Uche Dimgba.

The event took place at Archbishop Vining Playground, GRA, Ikeja.

Igbos, Yorubas, Hausas, Chinese, Europeans, friends and well-wishers were all in attendance despite the downpour that afternoon.

The occasion, which attracted the who is who in Igbo land, also featured presentation of awards which came in different categories to deserving Nigerians. Those who were conferred with the title of Ndigbo ji eme onu include Prof. Anya O. Anya; Dr. Uche Sampson Ogah; Prof. Nick Ezeh; Chief Chidi Anyaegbu and Chief Chidi Anumudu. The Distinguished Service Award went to Chief Ireke Kalu Onuma.

There were other chieftaincy awards to deserving Nigerians like Assistant Inspector General Zone 2, Police Command, AIG Ibrahim Adamu  who was honoured with True Nigeria Service  Award and also Chief Chow Kung Tung (Alias Williams) as the Nwanne di na mba 1 of Ikeja land.

Eze Dimgba in his address which was titled ‘Echefuna Ala Igbo’ meaning ‘Do not forget Igboland’, said the theme of the event presupposes a few things. First, that there is a land worth remembering; second, that there is an assumption or fear that this land is being or can be forgotten; and a third but invaluable metaphor here, highlighting a tendency that almost implores and pleads.

“As 2017 draws to a close, the theme is apt in asking us to not forget who we are, including our values of honour and integrity, as we ponder if it is possible to create a united, prosperous, equal, just and humane country.

“Whatever deduction we make from the topic, we must be aware that here is a contiguous space, which we all call Igbo land, which from evidence before us, has become a distant place out there; we talk about it cryptically as if it is under siege.”

He said, “The array of attacks upon Igbo land is numerous. From without, the assault has come in the form of political suppression and limiting of our space. From within, it is most visible in the changing faces of leadership, values, ideals and culture. Both are insidious and have gotten hold of our respective personas.”

Defining Ala Igbo, he said, “It is the land of our birth. It is the land of our forebears. It is our home. It is our mother’s womb, the soil and soul of our history and language. We drink and continue to drink from its springs of values, cultural spices and from it our tendentious dreams are formed. Geographically, it stretches across present day Southeast and most of Southsouth.”

For him and his community in Ikeja, Echefuna Ala Igbo; Forget not Igbo land, becomes a rallying call.

“When we drop our notions of Igbonness and take on the fake identities of our borrowed cultures, we are doing ourselves a lot of damage. Language becomes key here. A good way to communicate history and values is through language. Igbo language is not limited or limiting. Its beauty lies in its uniqueness. Hearing and speaking it gives them a sense of their specialness. When Suzy, Jennifer, John, and some other funny foreign names take the place of our Nneka, Odunwa, Nnamdi, Urenna and so many other deep mystically meaningful and illustrious Igbo names, my brethren, we are betraying and forgetting Igbo land”

He said Action Plan must be concentrated in building up the homeland. “We must be truly visionary in conceptualization of present and future Igbo communities. We must build and create within the changing nature of our migratory nature. We cannot legislate a wholescale return or exodus of Ndigbo back to Ala Igbo, but we can tweak and tinker with our notions of what our relationships with her is and ought to be.

“Wherever Ndigbo congregate outside the home land is and ought to be called Ala Igbo. Here the physical becomes relative and at most irrelevant. It’s the spiritual that becomes key. The language, the norms, the values, the artistic, the cuisine, the attire and the myriads of internal pulses and traits that define our way of life. All these with a focused eye on the home land would be the new approach towards keeping the promise of never forgetting our land,” Dimgba added.

Also speaking, Eze Ikem Agbasi, the Eze Ndigbo of Isolo Local Development Council Area, said, “It is not everybody that planted the yam that is alive to harvest it, so when you cultivate the yam and you are alive to harvest it, you thank the almighty God for sparing your life; that is our culture every year.”

He said the Igbos celebrate the new yam wherever they are even in Europe and the Americas.

Eze Ikem Agbasi also used the occasion to plead with the Lagos State Government to come to the help of Igbos because “it appears they have abandoned the Igbos, the roads leading to where we do business are all bad.”

Oron Nation Lagos Branch was fully represented with their attire and great Oron dance. They also came with a bag of crayfish as part of their tribute to the Eze Ndigbo of Ikeja. They boasted to be the best crayfish producers in the world.

Prince Offong Okung Ntofon is the President of Oron Nation of Akwa Ibom State, Lagos Branch.

He stated, “In the last three to four months I have led a delegation of my people to Abia, Ebonyi, and Anambra to marry. In Anambra I have been to Nnewi and the most recent one is in Aguata and we have also given our daughters to the Igbos in marriage, so that signifies that there is a bond between the Igbos and Oron people. And in Oro nation there are many Igbos doing business there without hindrance, and when this event came up the Eze magnanimously extended the invitation to us. So it is an opportunity to cement an existing relationship; that is why we are here.”

Eze Peter C. Umeh (JP) Eze Chimereze, Eze Ndigbo of Mushin, on his part maintained that “Iri ji is the celebration of new yam, when we thank God for good harvest because it is not easy that you put something in the ground and it germinates, it is just like a miracle, it is the hand work of God. It is also an opportunity to celebrate our culture because most of our young ones are not travelling so from this iri ji celebration they would learn some of our culture and tradition.”

Umaru Muhammed Sarkin Hausawa of Ago Okota land who was presented with Unity in Diversity Brotherhood award said “I feel glad, I am very honoured. I will ensure that there is peace in the nation, one love.” He also preached dialogue and for all ethnic group in Nigeria to live like brothers and sisters.

  • Birth control to the rescue in Ebonyi

Birth control to the rescue in Ebonyi

To grow its economy in the face of oil revenue challenges and exploding population, Ebonyi State has mounted a campaign for residents to cut down on reproduction. OGOCHUKWU ANIOKE reports

What can a governor do if he wants to grow his state economy when the odds are stacked against him? Crude oil has fallen out of favour and the population is growing at an alarming rate. Residents should go easy on procreation.

In Ebonyi State, birth control is one sure way to tackle the challenge. That was why  Governor Dave Umahi launched the Resources for the Awareness of Population Impacts on Development or RAPID.

Umahi’s administration believes a controlled population is easier to manage in the face of limited resources.

At the launch which took place at International Conference Centre Abakaliki, the governor said the state government would embark on massive sensitisation of the people on fertility control measures.

The event was attended by political office holders and traditional rulers in the state.

RAPID is a report of a survey sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development, USAID through Health Policy Plus Nigeria.

Presenting the report, the Country Director of Health Policy Plus, Dr. Onoriode Ezire said Ebonyi has the highest fertility rate of 5.3 per cent in the Southeast.

He said the implication of the fertility rate was that the population of the state which was estimated to be about 2.9 million presently would reach seven million by 2050 without corresponding economic growth.

While launching the report, Governor Umahi explained that the state government was committed to controlling the population of the state considering the prevailing socio-economic challenges in the country.

He described as unacceptable the report that about 28 per cent of girls and 14 per cent of boys in the state were out of school. He  announced the commencement of a N1bn Patients Ward Project at Federal Teaching Hospital (FETHA) Abakaliki.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Daniel Umezuruike described the report as laudable as it would help in the reduction of maternal mortality rate in the state which stands at 310 per 100,000 live births.

The state government is surely working on other options to grow the economy but with a controlled population, things get a bit easier.

  • Again, Aba residents appeal for security

Security has always been an issue in Aba, the commercial capital of Abia State. This is why the state pays close attention to the city, deploying security personnel there as often as needed. But hard as the security community tried to contain challenges, criminals still manage to cause a lot of trouble.

Residents of Aba frequently calls for more security. Even politicians have joined the call, asking for more deployments of security personnel.  A member of the House of Representatives, Ossy Prestige, who represents Abia, has echoed the call.

The calls are not unheeded, but the challenges persist.

Now, residents of Ohanku, Obohia and adjoining streets in Aba South Local Government Area appealed to the police, army and other security agencies in the state’s economic hub to beef up security in their areas.

The residents of the affected areas who spoke to our reporter in Aba said they more security in their neighbourhood of continued threats to their lives in recent times.

Some of the residents including Mr. Wilson Okereke stated that activities of armed robbers and street cult groups especially among teenagers have been on the increase in their area which has put their lives in danger.

Okereke, recounting his experience in the hands of the hoodlums, said that they made away with cash and other valuables when he had an encounter with them, stressing that he was not the only one that has fallen victim.

A resident of Obohia who pleaded not to be named said that they no longer sleep as their area has become escape route of kidnappers, armed robbers and others when being chased by security agencies.

He added that when the hoodlums operate in their area, they do so for hours without being challenged by the security agents.

Asked if the people attempt reaching out to security agents in times of distress or attack, the resident attributed lack of manpower, operational vans and the inaccessible nature of their roads as part of the reasons security agents give for the delay in response to their distress calls.

“Obohia, Ohanku, Umuogele and neighbouring communities no longer sleep with two eyes closed due to the incessant attack of hoodlums on the areas. Last week, there was rain of bullets where some residents of college road were killed. We later read that it was a drug war according to the Abia police command Public Relations Officer Geoffrey Ogbonna. We don’t know if any arrest has been made by the police and other security agencies.

“You don’t talk about street cultism that has become the order of the day and some of these boys have become terrors to this community. Parents no longer correct wrongs of their children and that of their neighbour’s because of the fear that he or she may be attacked by some cult groups. We want government to come to our aids,” pleaded the source.

A top security agent who asked not to be named blamed the bad terrain and the inability of the people to provide information for the persistence of crime in the areas, and the inability of the police to arrest the hoodlums.

The security agent assured that the police and other sister agencies were working collaboratively to contain crime in Aba and its environs regardless of the challenges.

  • ‘Igbo next to produce president’

Former governor of Abia State and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, Chief Orji Uzor Kalu, has said the Igbo can be sure of producing a president in 2023 if they support the re-election bid of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Kalu who urged the Igbo to wake up and learn from their past political experience, stated that the future of the Igbo in Nigerian politics is brighter now  with the APC than it was in the past.

Kalu who spoke in Umuahia, the state capital,  maintained that producing an Igbo president is a task every true Igbo indigene must identify with and the APC is the best platform to achieve the dream.

He said, “The future of Ndigbo is brighter today in APC. Once Buhari finishes his second tenure, I’m assuring you that either I or any other Igbo man stands a better chance of becoming the president of Nigeria. The right thing to do is to work for the presidency.

“We don’t need any other thing but the office of the president. If you see what I have done in our villages as governor you will know what will happen if somebody like me becomes the president, you know that the entire Nigeria will be developed.

“The future is very bright and Ndi Igbo will enjoy being in APC. That is why we are working very hard to win the Anambra State election and will win the state.

“It is possible to have Orji Kalu in Aso rock, if am alive and in good health. I’m very capable to be president because I understand macro and micro economics of Nigeria, I don’t even see any Nigerian more capable than I’m to run for the office and work for the people’’.

He disclosed that the APC led government is already reconstructing the Uzuakoli/ Bende Ohafia road in the State through his intervention.

“When I was governor I was busy maintaining that road, it is a State Government road. But when I left office it was over looked and the road became deplorable.

“So I appealed to the federal government for an intervention on that road and they are doing rehabilitation work now.

“The rehabilitation is not being done by any member of the nation al assembly; it was by my request.  I told the federal authorities that I can’t go to my village anymore and I’m a member of the ruling party, because I had once spent over five hours on the road because of its deplorable state.

“I showed Mr. President the pictures and he ordered for immediate rehabilitation of the road.

“We are doing the road to help the people, so that our people can be happy and stop working on their vehicles all the time. That’s what good governance is all about,” Kalu said.

The ex- governor added he tarred almost all the lanes in Umuahia, some roads in Aba to make life easier for people, saying  “it is just that people have refused to acknowledge what is right and good and unless Abians come up to speak the truth we might not see a better day, because they cannot hide the truth.

“When I was here as governor I gave free education, I gave free medical services, I built roads, and paid workers. Paying salaries was a sacrifice I made to help our people.

“It looked like it was an easy thing, but people have realised that it was not an easy job; it takes a man with a high level of discipline to be able to do it.

“It take a good manager and administrator to achieve that and it is really open today and people can see the difference.”

  • Relief in Abia erosion communities

Help is on the way for the people of Uturu, a comunity in Isiukwuato Local Government Area of Abia State, where soil erosion has been wreaking havoc.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has promised to tackle the problem.

The state government is also poised to arrest the perennial  gully erosion threatening the people of Umuda Isingwu in Umuahia North Local Government Area of the state.

Ikpeazu assured traditional rulers from Isiukwuato council that his government would do everything possible to assist the villages in the area. It was also reassuring that as the governor made those promises, earth-moving machines were already at work at the Umuda Isingwu erosion site.

The Nation gathered that the erosion work at Isingwu, where former finance minister Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s husband hails from, is being handled by Hartland Construction Company, a division of Setraco Limited.

Reports have it that the erosion control was a joint action between the Abia State Government and Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP).

State government sources said the state has paid counterpart funds for the project, and that  residents who are affected by the work would be adequately compensated.

Speaking at the project flag-off held at a nearby primary school which is also threatened by  gully erosion, Governor Ikpeazu expressed happiness that finally the project is taking off and with an A-rated contractor that will ensure that the work is done according to specification and completed within 20 months.

“If we fail to do this today, homes, schools, farmlands and churches will be seriously affected by this natural menace and we cannot afford that”.

Speaking with the traditional rulers at the Government House in Umuahia, Ikpeazu said that his administration was making efforts to ensure that there was water supply in the Isiukwuato community.

Leader of the delegation Eze Silas Chukwu and Eze Cletus Ogbonnaya appreciated the Governor for appointing their sons and daughters, including Lady Loveth Ufoegbu, Hon. Osita Igbe of the immediate past cabinet, and his assistance in ensuring that Uturu clan produces a local government area chairman, something that eluded them for decades.

The traditional rulers also used the opportunity provided by the visit to adopt Ikpeazu as their 2019 governorship candidate.
