  • Relief as Abia council gets hospital

Relief as Abia council gets hospital

Their ordeal was quite remarkable. Expectant mothers travelled far to be delivered of their babies. Patients suffering common and severe ailments had to make do with medical services provided by personnel of missionary hospitals or private facilities. In many cases, patients from rural areas died not from complications but because it took too long to find a health facility.

Now redemption has come, thanks to the state government which has just built and inaugurated what has been referred to as a state-of-the-art hospital at Mgboko, headquarters of Obingwa Local Government Area of the state.

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu flagged off the hospital.

A resident of Obingwa narrated a telling experience, saying he lost his wife who had gone to deliver their baby in one of the clinics in their community. She developed complications in the midnight because the staff at the facility could no longer handle the matter. Before they could ferry her to another hospital in Aba, she gave up the ghost on the road.

This was one of several experiences the people of Obingwa were passing through until Governor Ikpeazu ensured that the Obingwa General Hospital, attracted to the area by former governor, now Senator, Theodore Orji, was completed.

The facility, built in conjunction with the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme or SURE-P, is fitted with modern tools, complete with doctors’ quarters.

The joy of Obingwa residents knew no bounds as they trooped out to witness the epoch-making occasion as the governor commissioned the 100-bed facility.

Governor Ikpeazu donated N1m for the treatment of the early callers at the hospital. The announcement of the donation caused the people to go into wild jubilation.

Ikpeazu said that the facility would assist the Primary Health Centers in the local council, stressing that construction of the doctors’ quarters, borehole and provision of a soundproof generating set was to aid the medical staff to do their jobs.

He charged the people of the area to ensure that they guard and protect the facility built in their community in order to serve the purpose for which the hospital was built for.

He said, “With the presence of this hospital, our people doesn’t need to suffer going to Hospitals in Aba and Umuahia the state capital seeking for medical attention because it has the state-of-art facility that are available in major hospitals in major parts of the state. We have other similar hospitals in other parts of the state which we are going to commission in no distant time and it is our wish that these hospitals will assist the efforts of the Primary Health Care Centres in the state,” Ikpeazu stated.

The health commissioner, John Ahukanna in his speech, recalled how Governor Ikpeazu has invested so much in the secondary health sector since the inception of his administration which he said has helped to promote health services.

Ahukanna said that the state government would frown at any form of illegality in the hospital by any hospital personnel and however urged prospective patients to report any form extortion which he said that it would be followed up to the latter.

Hon. Amaechi Hanson thanked the governor for his love for the people of Mgboko, Obingwa and the state at large and stated that the presence of the hospital would help in reducing mother and child mortality rate and cost of accessing medical health care in the local government area.

Hanson who assured that the hospital was in safe hands and called for the recruitment of health officers from the local government who will work as medical staff in the facility.

The programme, according to Miss Okorie, shall drive through various states in the country, reaching out to the children living in creeks, who may not have access to potable water or good food.

She told The Nation at Mgbakwu community that it was also to extend love to them by feeding them for a day.

The celebration on the day was unprecedented, as the children, the aged and physically challenged stormed the community’s market square to be blessed with food by the beauty queen.

For little Master Chidiebele Nwankwo, God sent the beauty queen to rescue the downtrodden in this community, while praying God to protect her.

Also, Ngozichukwu Ejiofor, told The Nation that before now, Miss Okorie had visited the community when she gave free medical care to the aged and less privileged.

She called on the well to do in the society to emulate the beauty queen, who according to her, had been a God sent to the poor.

In her reaction, Miss Jennifer Okorie who was equally, Miss Goodluck South East 2015 and Miss Elegant Tourism, told The Nation that she was trying to give back to the society, adding that without God, she would not be at such level today.

According to her, “I am not doing it because I have money; I am doing it because of the condition of the people not only in Anambra state, but throughout the country.

“This programme is not ending in Anambra, we did it in Lagos and very soon, we will move to my home state, Ebonyi and later on, other states.

“When you look at the number of the poor, the less privileged, widows, widowers and physically challenged today in the society, one should be touched, I feel happy staying with such people.

“Thus, it targets to feed at least 300 to 500 kids for a day in each of the states it would visit.

“The number of dying children does not only evoke sympathy, but requires an urgent action, as it would be gross by in human to live in a country where people take two spoons out of a well prepared meal and leave the rest as left over to be wasted.

  • Enugu ex-commissioner rues demolition of property

A former Commissioner for Lands in Enugu State Deacon Okey Ogbodo has protested the alleged illegal demolition of walls of his property by the Enugu Capital Development Authority (ECDA).

He urged all and sundry to prevail on the ECDA to backpedal, adding that in seeking redress he would follow due process and God’s leading.

He said, “I do not have the power or might to reverse overnight this illegal action committed against me and my family, but I shall rely on the due process of the law of the land and the Supreme God whom I serve to hold the perpetrators of this dastard act, to account, sooner or later.

But in a swift reaction, the Commissioner for Enugu Capital Development Authority, Mr Chidi Aroh, a lawyer, dismissed Ogbodo’s claim, pointing out that the property was pulled down based on reports from the state ministry of lands which marked it illegal structure.

The fence, according to Aroh, was not part of the original master plan of the layout, hence the need to bring it down.

Ogbodo, in a press statement he personally signed and issued in Enugu, accused the ECDA officials of compromising their duties.

The said structure located at Onah Lane, off Agbani Road Enugu, had been under dispute, as St. Patrick’s Catholic church and some residents of the area had petitioned the state ministry of land and ECDA, claiming that the fence was obstructing free flow of movement of people and waterways in the area, adding that it was lying on access road.

The petitioners had also claimed that the controversial fence has continued to make life unbearable for residents of the area, insisting that it be removed.

But, the ex-commissioner accused the church of being determined to wrestle the said piece of land where the fence was erected from him at all ýcosts, “even after I had made it known that, being an ancestral inheritance bequeathed to me and my siblings, I was not in a position to dispose of the land.”

Ogbodo, who also served as Finance Commissioner, said: “I restate without equivocation that there has never been any such layout plan in existence. If the ECDA officials actually pulled down the walls of my property in satisfaction of the fake layout plan bandied about recently, then they have committed a heinous, unforgivable crime against, not just a law-abiding citizen, but a servant of God.”

He alleged that the church connived with some corrupt town planning officials to manufacture a fake layout plan which purportedly designated the said land as lying on an access road” And may I ask, access road to where?

“In the past three months, I have cried out to the whole world, and made formal representations to the Enugu state Governor, Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, and Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi, detailing the dubious machinations of the church and its paid agents in government ministries and parastatals to have the land taken from me.

The ECDA Commissioner said that his office acted based on reports from the ministry of Lands which carried out thorough investigation and established that the controversial fence was actually an illegal structure, which was creating serious problem for residents.

Aroh, explained that prior to the implementation of the report on the demolition, his ministry had received several petitions from the Catholic church and residents of the area, complaining bitterly about the difficulties they go through as a result of the blockage of their access road by the fence.

Besides, the Commissioner said that Deacon Ogbodo, had more than 60 days to take any action, aimed at stopping the demolition, including court injunction, but he failed to do so, until the structure was brought down.

  • ‘We want to kick out vandalism’

‘We want to kick out vandalism’

Members of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) from the Southeast gathered in Aba, the commercial nerve of the state to fight pipeline vandalism through football. SUNNY NWANKWO reports

They may not look like your regular first 11 but they believe they can dribble, score and help win the fight against pipeline vandalism. The Maiden System 2E Unity Oil and Gas Legendary Football Tournament is among the latest developments in Aba, the commercial centre of Abia State.

It was organised by the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) in collaboration with the Association of United Ex-Sportsmen, Vindima Sports and Media, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), and Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR).

What has football got to do with fighting vandalism? Plenty. Football is a very popular sport, and while the players dazzle with their dribbles, passes and shots, the message is sent out to the audience that pipeline vandalism, oil product adulteration are criminal activities that no one should engage in.

While sitting in for President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo visited Abia State, saying that vandalism was one issue the government would  tackle decisively. Some stakeholders have already started tackling it in some innovative ways.

Speaking at the occasion, Chairman of the Organising Committee and National Secretary, IPMAN monitoring committee, Chief Lawrence Kanu, said, we are organising this match to educate the masses on the need to stop vandalism of petroleum products. Football is a sport that brings everybody together. So, we are using the game of football to draw attention to pipeline vandalism. We want to use football to communicate the message to the world that vandalism is not in the interest of our country. Adulteration of petroleum products is not for our own good. Again, we don’t want anybody to sell above the approved pump price of N145. All sharp practices in the petroleum sector must stop.”

Kanu further stated that the significance of the football competition was to encourage youths in the Southeast and Southsouth to shun pipeline vandalism, hostage taking and other acts which adversely affect the petroleum industry.

While addressing participating teams which included Fegge All Stars Onitsha, Port Harcourt Refinery FC, IPMAN FC Calabar; Makurdi Depot FC, Enugu City Fathers FC, Abayi Umuocham FC, and Osisioma Depot Host Community FC, Kanu disclosed that the champions will get N1million, runner-up N.6million and second runner-up N.3m.

The opening match of the competition was attended by the representatives of IPMAN, NNPC, other stakeholders in the petroleum industry, Transition Committee Chairman, Osisioma Ngwa council, Chief Ugochukwu Nwachukwu, His Royal Highness Ezekwesili Maduagwuna, and a host of others from various communities.

  • ‘Why we took Anambra compendium to IBB’

‘Why we took Anambra compendium to IBB’

Chief Emeka Okonkwo, editor-in-Chief of Anambra, Light of the Nation, A Compendium, which documents the history of the state in pictures, speaks in this interview on the project as well as why former military president Gen Ibrahim Babangida had to pen the book’s foreword. Excerpts:

Why is it important for Anambra State to document its history now?

As we all know, a people without history lack identity. It is important for us in Anambra to know who we are, where we are coming from and the achievements our people have recorded both at home and in the diaspora. It is disheartening to observe that we don’t have a detailed information bank of Anambra State and its people. That was what we noticed when we were working on the Anambra @ 25 events and we now made a proposal to the state government in order to produce this compendium, in which  we will have a comprehensive history of Anambra, its people, culture and rich tourism potentials in pictures, with little prose that will make it reader- friendly. This is not just for today, but a material for posterity.

Is this compendium a kind of who-is-who in Anambra?

Not at all. The compendium goes beyond celebrating our people; it documents things such as our iconic schools that have produced the cream of our great people; the first hospitals; tourist sites, our art and craft; our festivals; foods; the towns and their uniqueness. In fact, it covers every aspect of our lives as a people. Yes, it is important to highlight our icons and beacons who have impacted on Anambra positively and inspired our generation and those to come, but the book is more than just that.

Is this a project of the ruling APGA government?

This project is for Anambra State people irrespective of political parties. I want to appreciate His Excellency Governor Willie Obiano, who has not only detached the party from the project but also given the editorial team of the compendium the needed independence to collate and put together the information in the book. The government is only a catalyst by giving the book an official seal. Government is not paying for the production of this book and doesn’t dictate its content or interfere on the professional work the editorial team is doing. This is a project of Ndi Anambra. This has nothing to do with politics.

The compendium has a dedicated section on tourism. Of what importance is this to the state?

Tourism is a hugely untapped potential revenue earner, especially in this era of diversification. As you know, Anambra has rich natural tourism endowments. Look at the Agulu Lake with its famed crocodiles. See the beautiful scenery of the waterfalls at Owerri Nzukalla, or the Ogbunike Cave and several others. So, we decided to tailor our 25th anniversary programmes to draw attention to these God-given tourism sites in order to draw attention of the people  to them so as to possibly kickstart the tourism business in the state as an alternative revenue earner, just like they do in Cross River state with the Calabar carnival which comes every Christmas.

What is your take on the assertion that tourism cannot thrive in an environment that lacks security?

In Anambra State we have attained almost a perfect, secure environment. Over time our leaders have tried to address the problem of security in the state. Former Governor Mbadinuju started it, although not perfect. Former Governor Peter Obi took it from there and did some good job but the current governor, Obiano, has shown unequaled passion and commitment in fighting crime and criminality in the state. Today, Anambra is rated as one of the best states, security-wise. This in itself should encourage tourism in the state and also engender development. That was even why we had a four-month anniversary celebration programme without fear. And to the glory of God we didn’t witness any ugly incident of armed robbery or kidnapping throughout the events. That is a testimony to the fact that Anambra is now very safe. Anambra is ripe for tourism.

What informed the decision to have the former President Ibrahim Babangida to do a forward of the book?

President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida created Anambra 25 years ago out of the old Anambra state, which had Anambra, Enugu and part of Ebonyi states. So, in doing this compendium, we thought it wise to seek him out to contribute to this historic book by way of writing its foreword. We reasoned that it will be interesting to find out the reason why his government took the decision to create Anambra state. We thought it would be a perfect opportunity to find out from the elder statesman if his vision for creating Anambra state has been met. Therefore, I think there is no other person more suited to do the foreword than Babangida. And in his words, when we visited him in Minna,”you guys are doing a very historic work, I’m willing to be part of it.” We thank him for graciously accepting to be part of this project. And we are excited about it.

  • ‘Ban footwear import’

They said they will produce more shoes, sandals, bags and other leather-based items, but they also have one special plea: ban all footwear imports.

At Ariaria International Market, Aba, Abia State, nothing will please the craftsmen more than freezing out all footwear imports. The move will boost their business, no doubt, but it will also help government realise its plan to shore up the parlous economy by patronising locally-made goods.

The leather workers under their umbrella organisation, Abia State Leather and Allied, Shoe Manufacturers Import and Export Union, made this position known at a town hall meeting in the commercial city with a member of the House of Representatives Ossy Prestige.

The group, while calling for financial assistance from the federal government, also appealed to the World Bank to assist their members with funds.

The shoe manufacturers stated that if the necessary funds were made available to them, they will improve on their product quality and volume, provide job for over 60,000 unemployed youths and generate more money for the state and the country.

Various speakers at the event including the president of the association, Mr. Chinedu Amaonyeanaeze Maurice Dike lamented the inability of members of the union to have access to funds or loan on low interest rate and stringent conditions by most of the financial institutions in Aba and other parts of the state.

According to Dike, leather clusters in Ariaria International market remain the fulcrum of income generation to the state and have done a lot in providing jobs for unemployed, but skilled youths who could have taken to crime and become societal nuisance.

In his speech, Ambassador Darlington Onuoha, a consultant to the union regretted the continued increase patronage of foreign wears by some residents of the state and the country at large which he said was not in the best interest of the state and Nigerian economy.

Onuoha who lauded efforts of the Aba shoe manufacturers in producing quality shoes he said would stand the taste of time and expressed his belief that with the right machine and training, the shoe manufacturers can compete favourably and even outshine their counterparts at the world level.

In his response, Prestige who represents Aba North and South Federal Constituency, urged them to be proud of their products by labeling them ‘made-in-Aba’.

Prestige assured the shoemakers of his commitment towards ensuring that he draw the attention of the federal government and his colleagues to invest and promote Made-in-Aba wears.

He expressed hope that the gains of patronising and promoting locally made goods especially as the country battles recession could be one of the ways to boost the economy and also help the traders make money from their sweats.

He promised to bring in investors that would help to invest in goods made-in-Aba and help the traders get the international connections which will help them exchange business ideas and form alliances which would help them in their businesses.

The Aba North and South lawmaker also promised to use his position as the representative of the two core local governments that generate the highest revenue for Abia State in the House of Representatives to promote the cause of the people in getting financial assistance and the help them to draw the attention of the federal government to their plight even as he surged them to support the efforts of the federal government to promote locally manufactured goods and services.

  • Obi marks Freedom Day with Sokoto kids

Obi marks Freedom Day with Sokoto kids

Former governor of Anambra State Peter Obi has celebrated the World Freedom Day with pupils and students of Holy Family Secondary School, Sokoto and St. Patrick’s School, Illela, the border town between Sokoto and Niger Republic.

Mr. Obi who said that his decision to celebrate the day in remote parts of Sokoto State was a way of assuring Nigerian children wherever they are that somebody cared for them and will always be available to encourage them  to take their education seriously as the  most important currency for competition in the world.

While in both schools, which have nursery, primary and secondary tiers, Obi went from class to class, interacting with the pupils. He told them that the essence of the World Freedom Day was not just being free from shackles of slavery, trafficking enslavement, but also being emancipated through education and acquisition of right values.

Quoting Jean Jacques Rousseau, the French philosopher, Obi said: “When Rousseau said in his book ‘The Social Contract’, that man is free, but everywhere in chains, he meant not just slavery as you and I know, but also the dangerous type of slavery occasioned by ignorance, which proper education only can overcome.”

On the visits, Obi donated N2 million to both schools, N1 million to each of them.

Obi who recently returned from Rwanda and Kenya on similar school apostolate, has also been visiting schools in the northern part of the country.
