  • Traders await road rehab

Abia State Government has concluded plans to dualise Faulks Road, a major road leading into the popular Ariaria International market, Aba Abia State.

That has left left the traders looking forward to the take-off of the project.

One of the renowned construction companies in Nigeria, Setraco Constructions Company,  will handle the job, it was gathered.

Ariaria which serves as a melting pot for traders from Southeast and Southsouth, including others from nearby West African countries, suffered neglect by previous governments resulting to perennial flooding and defacing of the market which the present administration in the state on assumption of office said it was going to address it.

Though The Nation was yet to gather when the project would take off and how much it would cost the state government to execute, government sources disclosed that the state government and the contractor had completed the signing of the MOU and other necessary documents of the road project.

According to a source who pleaded anonymity, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu visited Ariaria on Monday with the contractor for inspection of the market and the road to be rehabilitated after which it was expected that the construction company would move in their earth moving equipment to begin the construction work.

Speaking further, the source told our correspondent that part of the agreement reached by the Abia State government and Setraco was that they were going to dualise Faulks road to ease off gridlock usually associated with the road which serves as a major entrance and exit route for vehicles moving in and out of the market and stressed that the road when completed would have positive impact on trading activities in the market.

However, traders at the market have expressed their happiness over the news about the state government’s intention to reconstruct the road leading to the market and awarding the contract to a “reputable” construction company.

They however called on the state governor to set up a taskforce team that would consistently carry out on the spot assessment of the project to ensure that the contracting firm builds the road according to specifications on the contracts terms of reference.

The traders recalling that previous administrations in the state had reconstructed the road while their administrations lasted and attributed the use of substandard materials, lack of proper supervision and monitoring amongst others as reasons why the road especially “Ukwu Mango” continues to fail a few months after it was rehabilitated.

Lawmaker calls for urgent repair of road

A member of the House of Representatives representing Umuahia/Ikwuano, Sam Onuigbo has inspected failed portions of the Umuahia-Ikot Ekpene Road and called for its urgent repair.

The road has become a source of worry to the Ikwuano communities and road users, especially those travelling to Akwa Ibom or Cross River states. They spend several hours on the road because of its poor state.

Every year with the coming of the rains the road gets worse and this year is no exception as several portions are impassable, forcing motorists to seek alternative routes to their destinations. Rural farmers are also suffering.

The situation forced the communities of Ikwuano which are along the road to make distress calls to Hon Onuigbo who inspected the road to see things for himself.

The lawmaker sent an SOS to the federal Ministry of Works as well as FERMA, the road maintenance agency, to quickly fix the road

Onuigbo said that he and his colleagues in the National Assembly ensured that its repair was accommodated in the 2016 budget but lamented that the funds so provided can only foot palliative measures and not comprehensive repair that was recommended.

He described the about 60km road as strategic and important, passing through rich agricultural areas of the state to northern and southern states.

The federal lawmaker observed that many vehicles have been damaged while many lives have been lost due to the bad nature of the road and called relevant authorities to come to the aid of his constituents and other road users to enable them get connected to other parts of the state, as they have been cut off completely from them.

Chairman of the Ikwuano LG Council retired Major Emmanuel Awa told journalists that there are over seventeen dead spots between Ikwuano and Ikot Ekpene in Akwa Ibom state and that workers of his Council could not report to work today because of the bad nature of the road due constant rainfalls.

The traditional ruler of Ajata Nigu King Larry Ogbonna urged the government not to use unknown contractors for the road repairs again which is becoming a recurring decimal in the appropriation bill every year.

  • Two murders jolt Ebonyi

    Two murders jolt Ebonyi

The death of two Unity College pupils following their abduction is rattling the Okposi communit in Ebonyi State, the government and security agencies, reports OGOCHUKWU ANIOKE

The two boys have been buried in their communities in Enugu State amid agony. Still, it seems most of their effect of the death has been happening elsewhere: Ebonyi State.

Tochukwu Eneh and his friend Chukwuemeka Ugwu, who were Junior Secondary School pupils of Federal Government College, Okposi, Ebonyi State, had just rounded off their exams and were preparing to return home the following day. They wanted to arrive at home looking good, so they went with other schoolmates to Okposi community for a haircut. But then, as the report goes, a band of attackers came after them, driving the boys in different directions. Tochukwu and Chukwu-emeka were caught by the assailants and taken away. Several days later, their decomposed bodies were found on a river in the community.

Since then, the community has not been the same. Nor has Governor David Umahi been at peace. The security agencies have been equally roused up.

Federal Government College Okposi is one of the first generation unity schools. Established in 1965, it operated for about two years before the civil war started in 1967, hence the students could not continue their education in the college and had to be settled in two other institutions, FGC Warri and FGC Sokoto.

Between 1967 and 1995, the college premises were used for different purposes. They served as base for the Biafran army, Nigerian army, a temporary site for a federal polytechnic, a government secondary school and later a federal technical college. With the creation of Ebonyi State, FGC Okposi was re-established in 1995.

FGC Okposi is a coeducational institution with about 1,500 students on roll. The college aims to provide qualitative education for the young Nigerians some of who have achieved greater heights in their fields of endeavor.

The school has been leaving in harmony with the host community since inception but all that seems to have changed with the killing of Tochukwu and Chukwuemeka.

The students, Tochukwu Eneh and Chukwuemeka Ugwu, had finished their exams and gone to the town in company of some of their classmates for a haircut preparatory to going home when they were abducted by unknown persons.

Tochukwu hailed from Obioma, Chukwuemeka from Nsude, both in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Family sources said both JSS students having finished their final examinations were looking forward to reuniting with their families on May 13.

On the eve of their planned departure, a group of schoolboys, including Tochukwu Eneh and Chukwuemeka Ugwu, decided to get their hair cut outside the school. They had done so, and were on their way back to the school when they were accosted by some suspected hoodlums who ordered them to stop.

Alarmed, the youngsters scampered away in different directions but, in the ensuing melee, Tochukwu and Chukwuemeka were forcefully grabbed by the hoodlums and carried off. It was gathered that all the other students, except these two, made it safely back to school.

However, the frightened boys did not raise the alarm at once, maybe out of fear for the consequences of breaching school regulations, so the incident did not become known to the authorities until Friday, May 13, when Tochukwu’s guardian did not see him as they had earlier scheduled.

The said guardian, a lady who is a staff of FGC, Okposi, had some items which she wanted Tochukwu to convey to his mum in Enugu. When she learnt what had happened, she notified the school authorities and the parents of the victims of the abduction about the incident.

Upon receipt of the complaint about the kids, the police command in the state swung into action to track down the hoodlums down and save the boys.

The state governor, Dave Umahi also weighed in, directing the security agencies to unravel the whereabouts of the children.

The CP Peace Ibekwe Abdallah in company of the military and Department of State Security (DSS) officials made several visits to the community.

The visit paid off on Sunday when the decomposing corpses of the boys were discovered on a river.

A statement by the Ebonyi State Police Command’s spokesman, ASP George Okafor said the bodies were discovered at a bamboo grove in Ata River in the community.

He said the command received the report on the disappearance of the students on reported May 14.

“The CP led other senior police officials with the command’s Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) team for an on-the-spot assessment and rescue of the students.

The statement noted that in the course of interaction with the community’ leaders, youths and other stakeholders, it was discovered that two bodies were in a bamboo grove in Ata River, about half a kilometer from the college premises.

“In response to the information, the command recovered the decomposing corpses of the two missing students whose parents were there to identify.

It noted that their corpses have been evacuated and deposited in a morgue awaiting autopsy, as the command is presently investigating the matter and pledged to unravel the mystery behind their deaths.

“The command is appealing to all citizens to assist in providing relevant and timely information that would nip all forms of criminality in the bud,” it said.

The statement assured citizens of the state of adequate protection of their lives and properties at all times.

But Mr Bartholomew Eneh, father of Tochukwu, accused youths of the community of being responsible for the killing of his son and his classmate Chukwuemeka Ugwu.

Mr Eneh spoke to reporters in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

Mr Eneh said he called the school when his son failed to return on the day he was supposed to return after his exams and that was when the guardian told him that they were looking for him.

He said, “Since then I have been to Okposi twice and to Abakaliki twice.

“I am happy that the governor Dave Umahi gave the CP an order to properly investigate the matter. And since then she has been up and doing. Yesterday (Sunday) she was there with a team of security men from Police, Army and DSS. In fact the whole town was on fire when we came in. While we were holding meetings the CP got information that the bodies were in the river and we went there and their bodies were recovered.”

He said initial reports from medical doctors in the team revealed that the bodies were dumped in the river the same day they were abducted and accused the community youths of being responsible because the new principal refused to settle them.

“The old principal was the one who struck the deal with the villagers and some workers in the school were also benefiting as they used the opportunity to siphon money from the school authorities. But the new principal refused to be giving them money and these workers went and created the impression that the school was fighting the community. The group then threatened to punish the school in return. I believe the two boys were a victim of the problem and were just caught in the crossfire of the crisis between the community and the school.”

He called for justice to be served.

The chairman of the local government, Justice Ogbonna debunked the accusation levelled against the community.

According to him, the school since inception has been at peace with the community and the community will not now start having problems with the school.

A group known as Okposi E-8, expressed its profound shock at the death of the students. The group made up of indigenous people of Okosi based in Abuja, urged in a statement signed by its chairman Emenike Joseph Okorie and secretary Ugochukwu Ezekiel,  security agents to properly investigate the incident.

Some staff of the school have been arrested including the Principal for interrogation.

A source in the community said, “I suspect that one of the cult groups may have attempted to forcefully initiate the children into their group. You know they are initiating secondary school children into these cults these days. In some places even primary school children are also initiated.”

The two pupils were buried on Tuesday amidst tears and wailing by the community. Mourners called for justice. The bodies were first taken to the school after autopsy was carried out them by the police.

At the school the teachers and students were seen wailing and rolling on the ground. They described the late students as very disciplined and cheerful students and wondered why anybody would want to harm them.

  • Industrialist rallies Ndigbo

    Industrialist rallies Ndigbo

On a day people came from Enugu State to honour him in Anambra State, an industrialist, Chief Godwin Ezeemo urged the Igbo to unite for the region’s progress.

Members of the Anambra State People’s Assembly (ASPA) in Enugu led by their President-General Ugochukwu Okoli were in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State to confer the publisher of Orient newspaper with an award for his efforts in poverty alleviation.

ASPA, it was gathered, has over 1,000 registered members and 125 registered town unions from the 177 communities in the state.

The group helps to coordinate   Anambra indigenes in Enugu State and beyond, as well as promote Igbo unity and selfless service all over the world.

Ezeemo’s award by ASPA was not only for his contributions in poverty alleviation, but also job creation, philanthropy and determination for community development.

Speaking with The Nation during the event, President General of the group Hon Okoli said Ezeemo was selected for the award because of what he stood for in Igbo land and his contributions.

However, Okoli lamented that Anambra residents living in Enugu State were suffering untold hardship as a result of molestation and marginalisation from the Enugu indigenes, adding that as Igbo people is not supposed to be so.

This, according to him, was because the people see them as a threat to their business, adding that the association was already building a civic centre in the state which, according to him, they see as an Igbo centre.

Also, Comrade Mathias Ameke, who is the state chairman of the Progressive People’s Alliance (PPA) in Anambra, told the group to start looking inwards in discovering who takes the state to Eldorado.

Reacting after receiving the award from the group, Mr. Godwin Ezeemo, said the award came to him as a surprise without having prior notice of the group’s plans.

However, he decried the attitude of injustice and dehumanizing attitude which according to him, some Igbo indigenes suffer in their own land.

He said good governance and think home philosophy among Ndigbo are the panacea to the Nigeria problems.

Ezeemo, therefore, called for the promotion of Igbo unity, love and regional integration among the people of South East and part of South South despite their places of domicile.

He maintained that unity among Ndigbo will help to curtail any form of internal insurrection and lay solid foundation for the generations yet unborn in every Igbo land.

He thanked the group in Enugu state for the award, saying that such would spur him to do more for Ndigbo.

  • Coalition against genital mutilation

    Coalition against genital mutilation

UNICEF and an NGO are leading a campaign against female genital mutilation (FGM). They are seeking stiffer penalties for offenders, OGOCHUKWU ANIOKE reports

The United Nations Chil-dren’s Fund (UNICEF) and a non-governmental organisation, Inter-African Committee on Female Genital Mutilation have called for the end of female genital mutilation or FGM.

The age-old practice is said to be prevalent in Ebonyi and other Southeast and Southsouth states.

UNICEF and the NGO also wooed the media to help in speeding up the end of what has been described as a scourge.

Both organisations addressed journalists at a workshop co-sponsored by Federal Ministry of Information in Osogbo, the Osun State capital.

The theme of the workshop was “Female genital mutilation/cutting abandonment in Nigeria”.

National President of the NGO, Prof Modupe Onadeko expressed shock that every year three million girls and women undergo the painful and life-threatening crude operation.

Onadeko, a retired professor of Medicine, said that Ebonyi, Imo, Osun, Nasarawa, among other states in the country have high prevalence rate and called for the total abandonment of the practice.

She stated that apart from the pain the girls and women go through during mutilation other dangers associated with the Female Genital Mutilation includes, risk of contracting HIV/AIDS, urinary tract infections, fracture and death and called for the support of faith-based organisations in the campaign to end it.

Prof Onadeko debunked insinuations and traditional beliefs that uncircumcised girls are usually promiscuous and do not get married. She also condemned the use of the finger by mothers and mothers-in-law especially in Ebonyi and Imo states in pricking, piercing or cutting the clitoris, adding that such practices amount to circumcision.

Prof Onadeko urged the state governments to domesticate the law prohibiting female genital mutilation and rights of newborns and women, adding that there should be stiffer penalties for offenders.

She said the various types of female gentile mutilation or circumcision account for the increasing number of prostitutes and mortality of women during child delivery.

Onadeko, a retired professor of medicine from University of Ibadan said that research had revealed that 95 percent of prostitutes in Nigeria had their female organs mutilated by circumcisers.

“No Anastasia, no analgesics, some could bleed to death. Their belief is that if the clitoris is allowed to grow it could grow longer than the male organ, and then there would be two masters in one boat. They also believe that cutting the woman would drive away evil spirit from the girl child or woman. Some say it is to make her not to be promiscuous, so would remain a virgin for the husband or her would-be husband. Any of them who failed to do it is mutilated in the seventh month of pregnancy”.

She explained that any cutting of the female genitalia is harmful, and violation of her rights, and called for implementation of any existing laws against the practice while the state that had not enacted such laws should do so.

Onadeko said that the prevalence of the mutilation is more in Osun state with 77% prevalence, followed by Ebonyi state 74 %, Ekiti 72%, Imo 68%,  and Oyo 42%.

She noted that the worst of the mutilation is the infibulations type where the girl-child or woman has her genitalia stitched up leaving  only a small hole for her urination and menstruation.

The professor explained that the cutting accounts for the series of protracted labor and ultimate complications in child delivery including VVF, and had in many cases resulted to deaths.

“There is no need for cutting any parts of the body of any person except for medical reasons. In the cases of these mutilations they are done in respect or obedience to culture and traditions. In some cases these children are held down by able bodied men or women for them to be cut, their bodies/face are cut with unhygienic implements to give marks so that no other family can claim them.”

The medical expert said that leaving the female organ as created does not make her promiscuous rather makes for pleasurable marriage and normal child delivery.

Many other experts drawn from various disciplines delivered talks at the workshop.

In an opening remark, the Chief of Communication UNICEF Nigeria, Doune Porter said the agency decided to put up the programme to partner the media in combating the act and commended the Wife of the President for the proposed flag off of the campaign against FGM/C scheduled to hold in Abuja on Tuesday.

The Chief of Communication said that the agency has recorded greater success in the advocacy pointing out that the agency would not relent until the country records total abandonment of the practice.

Porter further said that some practitioners in Ile Ife, Osun State have abandoned the act and joined in the advocacy and called other practitioners in areas where there is prevalent cases to abandon the

practice and join in the advocacy.

She also commended the Federal Ministry of Information and the United Nations Fund for Population Activities, UNFPA for collaborating with the agency in the media dialogue.

Journalists across the Southeast, Southsouth and Abuja participated in the dialogue and resolved to champion the campaign in their different state.
