Also speaking, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezurike stated that the aim of the Health Week was to ensure reduction in maternal mortality and improve child survival ratio in the state.

He said the exercise entails antenatal care, health education and immunisation, among others.

  • Businessman escapes death

It was a lucky day for Ekele Okpara, an Ohiya Umuahia-based business man as he escaped death by the whiskers. He was shot at by unknown gunmen, wounding him in the process.

The victim, who narrated his story to newsmen on his hospital bed said he was returning from a business trip when he saw five men in what looked like uniform of security men standing on a jeep at Bende Road at Nkata Ibeku.

Okpara said he reasoned that the five men standing beside the SUV car were up for something sinister.

He said: “When I saw the five men, my inner mind urged me to stop and turn back, but the other urged me to go ahead as they might be policemen on duty. Probably, if I had obeyed the promptings of my mind, I would not be in this situation.”

The victim said when he approached the men, he heard them shout ‘stop’ and immediately they started shooting and their bullets tore his stomach and his intestines gushed out.

Okpara said when they saw blood gushing out from his stomach, they felt that he has died. They quickly entered into the waiting SUV and sped off.

“I started shouting for help which attracted passersby who took me to the hospital,” he said.

He said his shout attracted a woman who was passing by and who came to his rescue and drove him in his car to a nearby hospital where doctors carried out surgery on him.

He said: “When the woman came close and saw me, I pleaded with her to drive me to any nearby hospital. However, the only problem facing us at that point was that she said that she had never driven an automatic car before, but I encouraged her and told her what to do.”

A close friend of Ekele at the hospital who is also a businessman at Ohiya in Umuahia South who was with him shortly before the incident said having bought kerosene at a filing station, Ekele had asked him to take the kerosene to his (Ekele’s) family for use.

The friend, who spoke to Southeast Report in confidence, said he was saved by providence as he would have been in the car during the time of the incident. “I would have been in the car with him; and I was saved by the special grace of God,” he said.

He explained that several bullets were removed from Ekele’s intestines by the doctors.

“The things that were removed from his stomach could fill a litre of water, including the bullets,” he said.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer of Abia State Command of the Nigerian Police, Ezekiel Udeviotu denied any knowledge of the incident, but promised to confirm later.

  • NOA D-G seeks joint effort to fight corruption

Taking over reins of power on May 29, President Mohammadu Buhari identified corruption as an evil that must be tackled if Nigeria would develop as a nation.

This is why the National Orientation Agency (NOA) embarked on the sensitisation of citizens on the need to entrench transparency and accountability in governance.

At the Ebonyi leg of the event which held at the Staff Development Centre Abakaliki, the Director-General of NOA, Mr. Mike Omeri stressed the need for Nigerians to promote value reorientation as part of efforts to stamp out corruption in the country.

Participants at the event were drawn from the academia, civil service, traditional and faith-based organisations.

Mr Omeri said fighting corruption is a collective responsibility; urging all public office holders to reject corrupt practices in order to achieve national development.

He said: “Corruption has been repeatedly emphasised to be the bane of our national development. This is a social vice that has greatly impeded our developmental process and security; and it is contributing immensely to our socio-economic backwardness; hence the need for all Nigerians to have an attitudinal change and shun corrupt practices in all ramifications and also to make conscious efforts to complement the present administration’s initiative in this regard.”

Represented by the Director, Political and Civic Education of the Agency, Mrs. Ngozi Ekeoba Mr Omeri identified corruption as a threat to national unity and called on public servants to lead the fight against the menace.

The Director, National Orientation Agency in the State, Dr Emma Abba explained that the change agenda of President Buhari had placed a huge responsibility on the agency and called on all field officers to rise up to the challenge.

In a paper presentation, a Lecturer in the Department of Public Administration, Ebonyi State University, Dr. Onwe S. Onwe identified lack of patriotism as the major cause of corruption in Nigeria.

He said: “The war against corruption in Nigeria started long ago. Several military and civilian governments promised to fight it and indeed tried by setting up different anti-corruption agencies, but the end seems to be far. It is hypothesised that the environment of any society provides the necessary institution or platform for corruption to thrive or not.

“Perhaps, the public officials have the capacity to recreate a formidable environment and platform that is capable of checkmating corruption in Nigeria. Therefore, the need for the role of public officials in fighting corruption is a crusade that every well-meaning Nigerian should be part of, at least, by doing what is right in our immediate environment.

“This is necessary because Nigerian- the giant of Africa-is ranked as one of the most corrupt nations in the world. If corruption war is won in Nigeria, the war against insurgency will be easier, unemployment will be reduced, hunger and crime will also be addressed and Nigeria can regain her pride of place among her contemporaries.”

Some participants called on the Federal Government to review criminal justice system in the country for effective prosecution of corrupt politicians.

Governor David Umahi, in a message to declare the event open, stated that his administration was replicating the anti-corruption policies of the Federal Government in the state.

  • Lawmaker donates bus to church

    Lawmaker donates bus to church

The lawmaker representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Ossy Prestige has donated a 32-seater bus to the authorities of St. John’s Anglican Church, Osusu Aba under the Diocese of Aba.

Speaking during the handover exercise, Prestige said the gesture was in fulfilment of his campaign promise to the church when he solicited its support during the 2015 general election. Expressing the hope that the bus would assist the church in solving its transportation difficulties; the lawmaker urged them to make judicious use of the facility.

Stating that churches played significant roles in his election as a lawmaker, he pleaded for their continued support through prayers. He promised that he would not relent in advancing the cause of the city.

He said: “It pains me that economic activities in Aba are not what they used to be in the past. Many shop owners are no longer in their shops again. Some of them are either driving keke or have left the town because things are no longer the way they used to be.

“It is my wish to see business and economic activities come back to life again in Aba. I will be happy to see that those who left Aba for other cities came back to Aba.”

Responding, the Archdeacon in charge of St. John Osusu Parish, Venerable Alexander Ihemekwala thanked the lawmaker for his generosity of spirit, stressing that the car donated to the church would go a long way in helping the church in propagating the Gospel of God.

He promised to put the car to good use. He urged other politicians in the state to emulate the gesture of Hon. Prestige who was not compelled to pledge and redeem the promise he made before God and man.

Most of the parishioners who spoke to reporters said it was the first time a public office holder would make a promise and freely fulfilled the promise. They expressed optimism that the lawmaker’s tenure would be a clear departure from what obtained during the tenures of former representatives of the zone.

In a related development, Hon. Prestige has promised to donate a 500KVA electricity transformer and to sink a borehole with overhead tank to the people of Egbelu Ihiorji, Ohanku community in Aba South Local Government Area.

The lawmaker was in the area to commission a 300KVA transformer and water project executed by the community.

According to him, the 500KVA would serve as a relief to the load on the 300KVA while the borehole with overhead tank was to further enhance the distribution of water within the community.

Speaking on the deplorable nature of roads in the area, Prestige attributed the total collapse of infrastructure in the area to neglect, abandonment and insensitivity of former members of Senate and House of Representatives. He promised to do his best possible to ensure that their roads would be given a facelift in no distant time.

Some of the residents, including Eze Emejiaka, who the lawmaker had earlier visited, thanked him for coming to the area, even as they hoped that he would address some of the challenges which residents of the area are experiencing.

  • Foundation rewards outstanding students

    Foundation rewards outstanding students

For excelling in their academic work, despite obvious socio-economic challenges and ‘adversity’, some students selected from across secondary schools and tertiary institutions in Imo State have been rewarded by the R.I. Uzoma Educational Foundation (RIUEF).

A total of 13 students from secondary schools and four students from tertiary institutions, including the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Imo State Polytechnic and Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, got cash award ranging from N50,000 to N100,000 each in the maiden “Excellence in Adversity” Award of the foundation.

In his address at the presentation ceremony held at the R.I. Uzoma Memorial Cathedral Hall, Bishop’s Court Nkwerre, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the foundation and the Archbishop of Anglican Diocese of Orlu, Most Reverend Bennett Okoro said the foundation was established in the memory of a one-time Minister of Education in the defunct Eastern Region, Sir Rueben Ibekwe Uzoma, who propounded the Free Universal Primary Education (UPE) following the Macpherson Constitution of 1951.

According to him, the foundation has the core objectives of promoting quality education for Nigerian youths, irrespective of social, gender or religious background through the institution of awards, bursaries and prizes for students and educators alike, to promote awareness on educational needs in Nigeria and network with similar organisations in and outside Nigeria for the benefit of education and to support the provision of modern educational facilities towards the enhancement of learning in Nigeria.

Presenting the awards, a member of the Board of Trustees of the foundation and daughter of the late educationist, Dame Ada Okwuosa, said the beneficiaries were selected on a “non-denominational and non-partisan basis from independent secondary schools  and both state and Federal Government-owned tertiary institutions,” to underscore the public-service role and philosophy of the late Uzoma.

She further stated that “the foundation is also a tribute to his passion for equal access to education for all, which led him in his lifetime to have personally sponsored the education of several individuals who were not his children.

“We don’t refer to the beneficiaries as indigent students but they are students who have excelled in their academic work despite the challenges that could have made them do otherwise. They conquered socio-economic challenges to be the best in their respective classes and that is why this edition of the award is tagged Excellence in Adversity.

“The foundation’s programmes have kicked off in Imo State with a view to extending it to the national platform in the next few years when more funding will be available.”

A Principal in one of the benefitting schools, Anglican Secondary School Okigwe, Mr. Orji Idimakale, commended the foundation for the initiative, noting that the monetary award will go a long way to assisting the beneficiaries.

Mr. Ahioha Ndubuisi, the Dean of School of Business, Imo State Polytechnic Umuagwo, described the initiative as a noble gesture that will assist the students in reaching their goals.

He maintained that the current economic situation in the country has placed a lot of burden on the students and has inhibited their success in many ways.

“What the foundation has done will go a long way to assist the students with their financial needs and will spur others to work harder with the hope of clinching the award in the next edition.

Obiano’s wife donates food items to the needy

Wife of Anambra State Governor and founder of Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ), Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano has begun distribution of items to widows, orphans and some less-privileged persons.

The distribution of rice and money for soup condiments to beneficiaries across the 177 communities in the state according to her was part of her community tours which kicked off at Ayamelum and Anambra East, Oyi and Dunukofia council areas.

She addressed the crowd which comprised beneficiaries from the various communities and members of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the respective council areas at St Joseph’s Field, Anaku, Ayamelum and Otuocha, Anambra East.

She said she came to ensure that indigent women, widows and orphans in the communities do not have a bleak Christmas.

Other items donated to the beneficiaries to enable to celebrate the Christmas included bags of fertiliser, cassava stocks, hundreds of bags of rice plus N3, 000 each to 20 women and widows, school bags and writing materials, among others.

Mrs. Obiano thanked the women and members of the community for turning out en masse to welcome her, assuring that she would continue to train and empower the people in order to be self-reliant.

She challenged those who wanted to be empowered to identify and register with her NGO in order to benefit from the empowerment and training programmes organised from time to time.

She noted that the gesture was made possible through the support and donations of philanthropists and well-meaning persons to her pet project, CAFÉ.

She stressed that her efforts were targeted at supporting the good governance of her husband, Chief Willie Obiano.

Describing her husband as an action governor, Mrs. Obiano informed the people that old people in the state were being paid stipends monthly despite the lean resources of the state government.

In his remarks, former chairman of local government area and State Secretary APGA, Mr. Tony Ifeanya thanked Mrs. Obiano for empowering the people of his area, even as he commended Governor Obiano for attracting Coached Farms to Anaku.

  • Kinsmen back minister

Kinsmen of the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, in Egbuoma community in Oguta Local Government Area of Imo State have urged him to display the high moral values for which the community is known in the discharge of his duty.

In a communiqué issued by the Egbuoma Stakeholders’ Forum and jointly signed by the Chairman, Sir Simon Muomah, Secretary, Nkeonye Okeke and the Publicity Secretary, Comrade Uche Chukwudi respectively, the community assured that the minister is one of the thorough bred politicians from the state who will fit in properly in President Muhammadu Buhari’s change agenda.

According to the communiqué, the community has suffered indescribable marginalisation in the past, despite being an oil-producing community and as a result will give all necessary support and prayers for the minister to succeed as a mark of appreciation to President Buhari and Governor Rochas Okorocha for nominating one of their sons as a minister.

The communiqué stressed further: “In line with the norms and values of our community, we will continue to support our son as he assumes duty as the Minister of State for Education and we also thank President Buhari and Governor Okorocha for remembering our community.

“We are not in doubt that Anwuka will deliver on his mandate. We are assuring Mr President that his entire community is behind him and that his antecedents conform strongly to the change agenda.

“We are equally seizing this opportunity to appeal to President Buhari through the minister to address some of the challenges confronting the zone, which include lack of basic infrastructure, environmental degradation and unemployment, among others.”

  • Anambra, Enugu, Kogi in peace meeting over oil wells

Since the discovery of crude oil deposits in the boundary areas of Anambra, Enugu and Kogi states, the affected communities have not known peace. Members of these communities in the areas have taken up arms against one another as the states lay claim and counter-claim over which state the oil wells belong to.

The building of a private refinery, the Orient Petroleum Resources Plc owned by Anambra State-born business men at the area did not assuage the people. Rather, it escalated the crisis as Anambra and Kogi states engage each other in fierce clashes.

The three oil-producing states met recently and have resolved to take steps aimed at addressing the continuous oil-related crisis existing among their communities.

Rising from a stakeholders’ meeting in Enugu recently which was tagged “Inaugural Meeting of Peace, Truth and Reconciliation” and which featured various stakeholders from the communities, they affirmed that their various communities would make good use of the oil in the area.

In his opening remark, the immediate past Special Adviser to the ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on Petroleum Resources, Dr. Emmanuel Egbogah, regretted that the communities across the states have under-utilised the “blessings

from God” in the form of oil in their lands.

According to him, it was unfortunate that there is no peace existing among the oil-producing states, adding that the various stakeholders should put their differences aside and work for the good of one another.

His words: “We are given a blessing by the presence of oil in our communities and we are trying to throw away, to scatter this blessing. It is not proper. So, we are gathered here today to bring ourselves back to that blessing. To work in unity, tranquillity and understanding so that we can actually feed from that blessing.

“If we understand the meaning and benefits the host communities have individually and collectively, then we wouldn’t have been having one form of misunderstanding or another.”

In a related speech, the President of Host Communities of Nigeria (a body uniting communities with oil and gas deposits in Nigeria); Prince Mike Emuh emphasised that without peace, nothing meaningful can be achieved from these communities of Anambra, Enugu and Kogi states. He assured that his group will ensure that lasting peace will be realised shortly.

Prince Emuh further urged the government(s) of the affected states to put more efforts so as to guarantee the safety of lives and properties in these communities.

Also speaking, a representative of Orient Petroleum Resources Plc, Mr. Marcel Ifejiofor, expressed the commitment of the companies to better the lives of members of the host communities.

While pointing out that the oil companies cannot operate successfully without the help of the host communities, he called on the various communities to play their part to bring about peaceful co-existence.

“We need encouragement and support from local communities for a safe and secure environment; and encouragement for enough investments through which these communities could be developed.

“So, we strongly believe that our company will bring heavy investment to these

    communities,” he said.

Pointing out that the usual factors responsible for persistent problems between oil companies and host communities is lack of understanding and communication breakdown, he said the company will do all within its powers to live up to expectations.

“We believe that we are going to empower the communities with scholarships and various other rural projects to aid mutual co-existence,” he said.

Speaking to newsmen in an interview, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to Anambra State Governor, Hon. Ngozi Okoyo revealed that the government of Chief Willy Obiano has been doing all within its powers to enthrone peaceful co-existence within these communities. She noted that Governor Obiano’s administration has committed resources and time, all geared towards achieving peace among the communities.

Furthermore, another delegate representing Enugu State, Mr. Mike Nwakife advocated for an alternate means of conflict resolution for peace to reign. He frowned at the attempt of some people to hurt others or even take others’ lives over the misunderstanding among the communities as, according to him, the Igbo culture and tradition forbid such.

He further regretted that Enugu State is being taken for granted even though the state hosts a large amount of oil in the region, especially in Iga community. According to him, none of the professionals from the state are featured in the employment schedule of the oil companies, adding that such act is totally uncalled for.

While cautioning that the state wouldn’t resolve to any violent means for it to gain recognition, he said for peace to reign among the three states there was need for fair treatment and equity.

In his submission, a representative from Anambra State, Sir Kingsley Nnabuenyi, said there had been series of unresolved issues among some of the feuding communities outside of oil. He said that there had been communal problems existing in the past before the issue of oil came up.

“Oil became an escalating factor. So, we have to look at the root of the problem and resolve these things historically first,” he added.

At the end of the meeting, a committee was set up to devise a means of putting an end to the oil-related crisis. Members of the committee were drawn from the three affected states and the executive of the Host Communities of Nigeria. The committee was given two months to conclude its assignments.

  • Federal roads: Death traps in Southeast

Federal roads: Death traps in Southeast

For the first time in the history of Aba North and South Federal Constituency, the lawmaker representing the zone visited some federal roads to have firsthand information about their level of dilapidation. SUNNY NWANKWO reports that the lawmaker’s three-day inspection of the roads and some project sites in Aba presented a grieving situation

It was not a pleasant moment for the lawmaker representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rotarian Ossy Prestige penultimate week.

His three-day tour of Federal Government roads and some project sites in Aba and its environs presented a grieving situation. The roads, in particular, were in deplorable condition so much so that he could not hide his resentment over government’s inertia to enhance the well-being of the people.

For an on-the-spot assessment of the nature of the roads, the lawmaker visited Asa-Ohabiam-Port Harcourt Road; Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway, Aba-Ikot- Ekpene Expressway, Ovom-Azumini and Akpu-Aguwa-Pepple Street road gully erosion project site which is yet to be completed many years after the Federal Government had awarded contract for the ecological problem to be fixed, among others.

Speaking with newsmen at the end of the tour, Prestige, who was visibly worried about his experience, said he didn’t know that the dilapidation of the federal roads and some other infrastructure was that awful. He was also surprised at the level of decay of other project sites he visited; including Ariaria International Market.

Bothered about the negative impact the state of infrastructure in Aba would have on the economy of the state if drastic measures were not taken to address the situation, the lawmaker said he was going to invite members of the House Committee on Works to Aba as part of his efforts to further push for urgent attention of the Federal Government to the plight of Aba residents.

He also reiterated his commitment to ensure that Aba was given a facelift, even as he said that business and economic activities would be rejuvenated in a city that was once noted for its ingenuity and interest in small and medium-scale enterprises.

He said: “It is unfortunate that people who have represented the zone in the past left it to degenerate badly to the extent that people were forced to leave the city for neighbouring Akwa-Ibom State and other Southeast states where they feel is more conducive for their businesses.

“When I moved the motion about the deplorable nature of roads in Aba at the floor of the House, I never knew that it was this bad. You are all witnesses to what we saw at Port Harcourt Road, Ariaria Market, Aba-Ikot-Ekpene Road, the Azumini and other places that we visited.

“It is a clear pointer to the fact that there was the urgent need for accountability on what the constituency fund for Abia North and South was used for over the years. And to further push for the need of my constituents to be heard and their problems solved, I would be proposing for a visit to Aba by members of the House Committee on Works for them to see things for themselves. By so doing, they will appreciate that what I have been saying about Aba is not a fallacy but the truth; that Aba is in dire need of infrastructural development in order to bring back its glory.”

Some of the residents who spoke to journalists described the visit of the lawmaker as apt; stressing that it was the first time a representative of the zone would come and feel the pulse of the people he is representing.

They expressed the hope that the lawmaker would deliver to them the dividends of democracy for which he was elected.
