A socio-cultural orga-nisation, Igbo Ekwezuo, has justified a list it sent to President Muhammadu Buhari for ministerial consideration.
The list was detailed in a letter to the President on July 13.
It read in part, “Your Excellency in our 2015 second quarterly meeting held in Owerri, the Imo State capital, we reviewed the activities of the government in the recent years and posited corruption as the bane of governance in the country. Consequently, we resolved that we shall nominate and recommend some of our credible and dependable sons and daughters for consideration in your present and future appointments as a way to mitigate corruption in public office”.
In a statement made available to journalists in Owerri, the Imo State capital, after its monthly National Executive Council (NEC) meeting and signed by the President General, Chief Chibuike Obieshi, the group explained that the action was necessitated by the need to ensure that political appointees of Igbo extraction meet the standard of the new government.
It noted that most of the political appointees from the Igbo extraction, who had served the country in the past, soiled the image of the sub-region, adding that its intervention in the current process is to redress the trend.
The statement said, “It is high time the integrity status of an individual determined how far he can go on the leadership ladder of the country and this group will henceforth help the government to connect with those who have the right pedigree to serve the country”.
The statement also faulted those criticizing it for forwarding some names of politicians to the President, insisting that the action was designed for public good.
The group further challenged other ethnic nationalities in the country to emulate the example and ensure that “political appointees from their domain are people who are morally above board and this will guarantee the opportunity for the right caliber of people to mount the reins of governance in the country”.
Giving insight on the list sent to the President, the group disclosed that “the list contained 13 names from the 5 Igbo speaking states in Nigeria including one each from the Igbo speaking parts of Delta and Rivers states. Three women made the list and the choice of the names was neither based on partisan or religious sentiments”.

MOTORISTS and residents have appealed to government to repair the Ndiwu Itumbuzo in Bende Local Government Area of Abia State.
The road is described as a death trap characterised by large potholes and gullies.
It leads to Itunmbanuzo in Akwa Ibom State which was last repaired many years ago.
The road was built in the 70s by the government of late Chief Sam Mbakwe under the old Imo state government and currently those using this road are doing so at the risk of their lives with its attendant potholes which are big enough to swallow a car.
This 7km rural road infrastructure has never been touched by subsequent administrations after it was built years ago, even as the road has economic value with the area being a food basket from the state
A trip from Itzumbuzo to Bende the headquarters of the local government area which usually take less than thirty minutes has now become a journey of one hour due to the poor state of the road and the people need government attention urgently to survive.
Over the years due to lack of maintenance the road has become a pitiable one and intervention from government was not forth coming and need urgent repairs, while cocoa which is abundant from the area has been left to the economic benefit of the people of a neighbouring
state.
Gullies and sizeable potholes have taken over the roads, motorists and okada rider have to meander and manoeuver in order to make their journey and a trip from Itumbuzo to Bende local government area or any other part of the state.
The people are therefore calling on the government to come and help them and mobilise a quick intervention to repair at least the damaged portions of the roads for now because the suffering is becoming unbearable.
One of the motorists who gave his name as Sampson Ibe said that the last they saw a caterpillar in the area was in the 70s when the road was built, “I’m sure that if not for people who travel to the city, some of them may not have seen a caterpillar in their lives”.
Ibe said that government should come to their aid if they want them to have a sense of belonging and save them from untimely deaths because of the poor standard of the road over the years.
An indigene of the place, Abel Kalu decried the poor nature of the road, saying that it has cost them revenue which they would have got from cocoa merchants who have stopped coming to buy from them because of the bad road.
Kalu said that they have waited to no avail for government assistance and intervention on their rural roads, which has taken over twenty years and have decided to embark on a make shift repair and maintenance of the roads.
He said that women and men are made to fill empty cement bags with sands; the girls bring stones while the young men do the road repairs by dumping the materials at the gully part of the road to make the road motor able.
A woman from the area, Mrs Ori Kalu said that government should come to their aid, as many of their people have died because of lack of good road to access health care facility outside the community and called for urgent attention on the road.
Mrs Kalu said that their farm produce are being consumed by them as people who normally come to their place to buy food have stopped coming, “Making us to consume whatever we produce instead of selling them for us to make money”.
The curtain has been drawn on the one-month long activities that marked this year’s August Meeting in Imo State, but not without its benefits.
This year’s theme was ‘Dare to Dream…it is Possible’. The empowerment of women and the girl-child was the focus of deliberation.
Various women groups from across the country and beyond sponsored such communal projects as healthcare centre, markets, town halls, as well as award of scholarship to deserving students.
The wife of the state governor, Nneoma Rochas Okorocha, also gave out fully furnished buildings to widows and other indigent persons under her pet project, She Needs a Roof Project (SNARP).
As early as 6.30am, thousands of gaily dressed women converged on the venue, defying the early morning drizzle and dancing gracefully as they awaited the arrival of the special guest, wife of the President, Hajia Aisha Buhari.
The event as expected did not fall short of expectation in any ramification. The expectant but cheerful looks on the faces of the women, confirmed that this year’s theme, which challenged the women to rise above traditional limitations and dream of a better tomorrow was apt and appreciated.
One by one the colourful groups filed out according to their Local Government Areas and marched round the expansive Square singing and dancing to the admiration of the cheering crowd.
The wife of the President, who was impressed by the large turnout of women and their obvious craving for a better society, charged them to continue to preach peace and work for the unity of the country.
Aisha who was represented by the Vice President’s wife, Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, stated that women have no option than to ensure that the nation remains united, adding that, “Nigerian women must continue to dream big, and work towards achieving big”.
According to the President’s wife, “the time has come for women in Nigeria to rise and do what they are good at doing, which is to build good homes. If women in the country do what they are expected to do the nation will not be the same and the women themselves and Nigerians will never be the same too”.
She enjoined Imo women particularly to remain united adding that “with unity of purpose they can upgrade the state to an enviable height of greatness”, while commending the Governor’s wife for changing the lives of the less privileged women through her pet projects.
Governor Okorocha in his speech solicited for more opportunities and roles in governance so that they can exhibit their potentials, noting that “if I didn’t give my wife the opportunity to showcase her endowment, I would not have known that she is a woman with great ideas.
He assured that Imo people would do all they could to support President Mohammadu Buhari to ensure he succeeds, stating that “President Buhari must succeed since he has all it takes to make a good President”.
He commended the wife of the President and wives of state governors who were in attendance for honouring the 2015 Imo women August Meeting.
In her speech, the host and wife of the state governor, noted,
“The value of every office depends on the extent such office is used to serve God and humanity. The office of the Governor’s wife would be meaningless if it is not used to add value to the lives of the people and that realisation gave birth the pet project christened ‘She Needs A Roof Project’ (SNARP)”.
She stated that she had used the opportunity afforded by her office to her to spur women of the state to dream big to enable them achieve big, which she said necessitated the theme of this year’s Women August Meeting.
The Governor’s assured that she would continue to pilot the affairs of the Imo women to discover and promote hidden talents among them.
Dignitaries at the event included the Deputy Governor of the state, Eze Madumere and wives of the governors of Edo, (Mrs. Iara Oshiomhole), Enugu State (Mrs. Monica Ugwuanyi), Plateau (Mrs. Lalong), Abia (Mrs. Nkechi Ikpeazu), and the Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, Mr. Kelechi Ugwu.
Relief has come for needy residents of six communities in Anambra State. An organisation called ASA-World made up of the state indigenes resident overseas provided free medical care for the people.
The mission, according to the ASA-worldwide and ASA-USA President, Dr. Nwachukwu Anakwenze, who led the delegation, will cost 800,000 dollars.
The group told The Nation that they have no regrets thinking home because medical challenges the poor masses face are much.
It was the reason the team brought diagnostic equipment and drugs to be left behind for resident doctors and other health officials to continue using.
The six communities that benefitted in this first phase of the ASA-World largesse are Oko in Orumba North Local Government Area, Abagana in Njikoka and Obosi in Idemili North council areas.
Others included Ihembosi and Ozubulu, both in Ekwusigo council area as well as Oba in Idemili South local government area.
Anakwenze, said the medical mission is supported by ASA-world membership in 27 countries that embraced others like Canada, Dubai and Switzerland among others too.
At Oko, 1,100 people suffering from different ailments were treated and drugs given to them, while Abagana counted 8, 500 people, Ihembosi, 1,200, Obosi 1, 300 and Ozubulu with 1,200 patients.
Interestingly, one of the black–Americans that was involved in the trip to Anambra State, Mrs. Teressa R. Kemp traced her ancestral home of her father to Awka about 187 years ago.
She said that she organised Igbo Arts and Cultural festival in South Carolina as she has taken interest in works of African people, while describing Nigeria especially, Ndigbo as hardworking, intelligent, unassuming and entrepreneurial in nature.
Kemp, said her great grandfather named Osinachi, was trafficked over 187 years ago as a blacksmith from Awka into slavery as confirmed by DNA.
She told theNation that she had written a book “keeper of the fire” an Igbo metal smith from Awka, detailing the story of her forefather.
According to her, “I am proud to be linked to Ndigbo, the world has prospered because of Ndigbo”
The vice president, ASA-worldwide and president of ASA-UK, Christian Onuoha, said they are taking off the challenge from the government, adding that they are doing things that would benefit the poor masses.
He lamented that the people could not go to hospital because of lack of funds, adding that area of the 2015 medical mission to include scholarship mission from ASA-South Africa, while ASA-Canada will embark on awareness and orphanage visits.
A London-based early year’s education specialist, Mr. Bright Dumaka said Nigeria would maximise its potentials for greatness through a sustained strategic long term planning and implementation of an early year’s education policy.
This, according to the man with interest in tourism and hospitality, would translate to gains in so many areas.
Dumaka argued that the society as a whole would be far stronger as a cohesive and leading force, if this is made a priority project undertaken by the stakeholders responsible for the communities.
He said, “In addition, it makes the care for the re-evaluation of community values by policy makers, stakeholders and adults in general to consciously adopt a long term strategic plan to maintain those values that make us dynamic and enterprising as a community but change the ones that adversely affect us.
Like the alternate government, the Women’s August Conference has raised the infrastructure profile in the region, upgrading schools, building health centres, markets and rehabilitating roads, among others. At this year’s edition, the anticipation is even more. OKODILI NDIDI and UGOCHUKWU UGOJI-EKE report
It has the colours and pull of Christmas, drawing women from every part of the globe to the Southeast. But unlike the feast of December 25, the August Women’s Conference has an enduring brief: to make better homes, improve infrastructure and encourage women to come away from apparent obscurity. The result on all counts has been fair but everyone, including the women themselves, seems to want more this time.
•From left: Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu; his wife Nkechi; wife of Abia Deputy Governor, Lady Vivian Oko-chukwu, and wife of Abia Deputy Speaker, Lady Ndidi Cosmos Ndukwe at the 2015 Abia Women’s August delegates conference held in Umuahia
Gathering every August in each of the Southeast states, the women have rehabilitated rundown schools, built and equipped health facilities, patched up roads, taken care of widows, and, among other things, saved many lives by providing medication to ailing people. They have even got apparently irreconcilable couples to start loving one another again.
Their agenda will expand when they gather later in the month. In Abia State, as women prepared for the conference, Governor Okezie Ikpeazu assured them of his administration’s readiness to help them achieve more, telling them to choose any project and forward a funding proposal to him through the Ministry of Women Affairs and his wife’s office.
That is not all. Governor Ikpeazu told the women that his administration will do everything possible to stop expectant mothers from dying during childbirth. He equally pledged to provide microcredit for Abia women in addition to increasing their presence in the political space.
In Imo, the state government has told the women to surpass their past achievements, go to rural communities and raise the standard of life there to augment what the Rochas Okorocha administration is doing.
The month of August may not mean much to people from other parts of the country but it is a month marked with glitz, fanfare by Igbo women. It is a time to take stock of the previous year and reposition and strategise for the next. It is marked with activities which include town hall meetings, free healthcare services and philanthropic works, which is rounded off with a grand finale sponsored by the state government.
At the grand finale, various resolutions reached by the various communities across the state are harmonised and prepared into a working document that will assist the government to identify areas of priority in the demand list of the communities.
The communities are wearing a new look, the women are working round the clock to ensure that they impress their husbands.
At the end of every August meeting, for instance, most community projects like healthcare centre, markets, schools and women empowerment schemes are often conceived and funded by the women groups.
Also, communal challenges like poverty, diseases and sometimes communal crisis are tackled by the women who usually influence their husbands to assist in community development projects.
•Some of the women proudly exhibited the work of their hands
The period also affords the women the opportunity to reunite after years of separation and build stronger friendship. Most times misunderstandings and business matters involving Igbo women in the cities are resolved during August meetings and appropriate punitive measures taken to discourage acts that could endanger the unity of the women.
It is also during the meetings that issues of scholarship to deserving but indigent students and empowerment programme for widows and other vulnerable women in the society are conceived and implemented.
This year’s edition from all indications is not going to fall short of the expectations. In fact there is strong likelihood that it may surpass last year’s edition by the quality of the preparation of the state government.
Already, the wife of the President, Aisha Buhari, is one of the guests that will be coming to deliberate with the women and encourage them on how to build a virile community through mutual cooperation.
Imo State Deputy Governor Eze Madumere urged the women to deploy their wealth of experience to finding a solution to the many challenges confronting the communities.
He appealed to them to partner the government in any capacity they can to build prosperous and safer communities, noting that the responsibilities of building a better society should not be left in the hands of the government alone.
Prince Madumere assured the visiting women of adequate security as they converge, adding that the Rescue Mission Administration takes the issue of the security of life and property seriously.
He said, “May I use this opportunity to welcome our women to this year’s August Meeting. As you move around the state, even in the remotest part of the state, you will notice the tremendous change that is sweeping through our dear state, the unprecedented infrastructure development and you will indeed be proud to be an Imolite. I therefore urge you to explore all avenues to contribute in your own little ways to what the government is doing”.
Some have criticised the forum, saying it is fast losing focus and becoming mere political and social gathering. Worse, the critics say it has become a tool in the hands of mischievous politicians who manipulate its proceedings and outcomes.
Even the cost of preparationhas also been condemned, just as some women are accused of doing everything, sometimes, unimaginable in order to be available for the monthly gathering.
Commenting on the gains of the August Meeting, Sir Peter Okala, a community leader, said it,
“When great minds gather, they can canvass for peace and development in the society. It is highly important for people to come together, not just the women but also the men and youths to brainstorm the challenges confronting the society”.
Governor Okorocha, during last year’s grand finale, said that the August Meeting under his watch has well thought-out themes with a view to adding value to the gathering of families and communities.
In Abia, Ikpeazu directed women holding political appointments to empower their colleagues also.
The governor’s wife, Mrs Nkechi Ikpeazu said that the Abia Women’s August Delegates Conference (AWADEC) was conceived to create a paradigm shift that would make the women at the community level to seek self-realisation.
She said, “We are trying to change the perception of our women to become empowered psychologically, socially and economically and also get them to re-evaluate whatever projects they have set out for themselves, to ensure that…projects match certain criteria…and have direct impacts on women’s economic and social status, and improve their knowledge across the spectrum of womanhood.”
The new General Officer Commanding (GOC) 82 Division of the Nigerian Army Brigadier General Ibrahim Attahiru has taken office in acting capacity, urging his commanders to prioritise capacity development of troops.
He observed that the 82 Division is a peculiar one that has the capacity to fight both on water and land.
Attahiru spoke at the handover ceremony held at the GOC’s Conference Room, Headquarters, 82 Division Complex in Enugu.
The new Chief Dragon further reiterated that his administration would focus on training and retraining of troops with contemporary equipment and would create situation awareness within 82 Div Area of Operational Responsibility.
He described the mantle of leadership that came to him as an act of divine providence.
He also enjoined officers and soldiers of the Division to tender their maximum and unflinching support in the renewed effort intensified against crimes and its related offences within 82 Division’s AOR.
Attahiru further noted that the outgoing GOC was a mentor and worthy of emulation by all following his achievements and developmental strategies witnessed by the Division since he assumed duty emphasising that the standards set will never be forgotten in a hurry.
The outgoing GOC 82 Div Maj Gen Shehu Yusuf thanked officers and soldiers of the Division for their relentless effort which made his tour of duty a complete success. He called on them to remain steadfast and also extend similar loyalty, to his successor.
He described the new GOC as a seasoned infantry officer who has sufficient understanding and knowledge of the Division’s Area of Operational Responsibility.
Yusuf while congratulating the new GOC for his appointment also said that he was particularly happy that the new GOC is coming from 13 Brigade Calabar where he had also earlier commanded before becoming the GOC 82 Division stressing that he is fortunate and knows him to be very hard working senior officer.
Traders of Ariaria International market, Aba Abia State have pleaded with the government to save them from flood threatening to sack them from their shops.
The traders lamented that they were gradually losing their customers to their contemporaries in other parts of the commercial city as their shops have been flood and inaccessible since the rains set in.
Some of them who spoke to our correspondent, expressed fears that if the situation was not urgently addressed they would risk losing their wares to the water anytime it rains heavily.
“Remember that there was a time when our neighbours selling drugs lost over N2billion to flood in this area. We weren’t spared either if not that the drinks and fruit juice that we sell can be washed and dried up. But some people that sell travelling bags also had a share of the flood impact.
“The thing is that since then, some of us now rent or bought out rightly some of the lockup shops upstairs which we use as our parking store and use this place that we are now as our display shop.
“You have seen it for yourself. How many persons did you see coming into this flood to buy or even to price for anything? Thank God you were here when someone called me to bring something for him at Enyimba. That is how we now sell things here; customers will call you on phone and you will go and deliver the customer’s order wherever he or she asked you to deliver the goods.
“Thank God that you are here. It is not a rumour. We can only move in and out of our shops with rain boot. The water initially was flushing into that former portion of land initially occupied by fire service not until a structure was erected on the land and since then, it has been from bad to worse situation.
“Recall that the former governor Chief T. A Orji repaired the Ukwu Mango area which did not also last long before it failed as a result of the inability of water coming from the uppermost part of the market to see where it would flush into.
“We want the state governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu to come to our aid. We are really suffering and don’t know what else to do. He has started doing roads in Aba. We want him to come to our aid in order to help us come out of this ugly situation that we have found ourselves”, Mr. Joseph, a trader in the A Line pleaded.
Our correspondent who was at the area, reports that transport fare from Ariaria Police Station to Ariaria Junction which usually cost N50 now costs N100 because of the deplorable road and the effect of flood within the A Line-Ukwu Mango area.
Governor Ikpeazu recently awarded the contract for the construction and rehabilitation of about seven roads in the commercial cit, promising more dividend of democracys.
He also said that changing the face Enyimba City is a priority of his administration.
The National Boundary Commission (NBC) has directed both Abia and Ebonyi states to submit before the end of the month four copies of any documented information that could be helpful in tracing their boundary lines.
This was contained in a 12-point communiqué issued at the end of a joint meeting of officials of NBC, Abia and Ebonyi states interstate boundary held in Umuahia.
The communiqué said that the technical committees of both states were expected to proceed to Abuja for the delineation of the boundary in accordance with already screened and accepted documents.
It is expected that the stakeholders of the communities along the dispute boundary areas are to sustain the relative peace through joint utilisation of the border resources of both states.
The communiqué which was presented by the national director of NBC, Dr Mohammad Ahmad, directed the police to release all those detained from both states as agreed in the resolution of 1st August this year.
It said that investigations into the reported case of a missing Chukwuma Akwa of Ivo local government area of Ebonyi state will continue, adding that adequate security be provided for the Joint Field Team whenever they are on duty.
The communiqué further directs that the federal government, and the two states involved should provide logistics such as fund, vehicles among others to their representatives on the field exercise.
It is also expected that the chairmen and traditional rulers of the affected local government areas should carry out joint enlightenment campaign in the areas, while status quo should be maintained until the boundary is properly defined.
The communiqué said that the committee directs that the joint field team will be inaugurated on November 17th 2015 at Umunneochi council area, while the field work shall commence at Uru-Lokpanta axis all in Abia state and will be completed on or before 18th December, 2015.
In his speech the host and deputy governor of Abia state, Hon Ude Oko-Chukwu listed the steps so far taken by governments of both states to usher peace over the years, including addressing the 15th July incident at Umunneochi/Ivo area of both states.
Oko-Chukwu reiterated the readiness of Abia state government to cooperate in the joint efforts to demarcate the boundary between the two sister states as soon as possible, while calling on NBC to speed up action in resolving the boundary issue permanently.
In his own address the deputy governor of Ebonyi state, Dr Eric Kelechi Igwe said that the government of Ebonyi state attaches top priority to the boundary resolution and called on the meeting to discuss all issues dispassionately while pledging their cooperation towards a peaceful resolution.
A group known as Alex Otti prayer network, in conjunction with Abia State students, have staged a peaceful demonstration to protest the reported attempt to assassinate in Abuja the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in the last election.
It was reported that some gunmen went to Otti’s guest house intent on killing him. They ended up killing a policeman there.
The group which staged the demonstration at Ikputu village in Isiala Ngwa North, blocked the major road linking Aba with Umuahia carrying placards, some of which read, ‘Otti is the mandate; it’s a matter of time; No weapon fashioned against Otti will prosper.
There were others.
Speaking with reporters during the demonstration, the leader of the group Catchist Jonah said that the group is worried about the assassination attempt on Otti.
The protesters condemned the plot to kill Otti.
Jonah said that the people of Abia State who freely gave their mandate to Otti are not happy over the recent development where people tried to eliminate him because of politics.
He said that the people of the state are worried about the deplorable condition of the state and that they believe that Otti is the right person to correct the anomaly.
“That is the reason we gave him our mandate”.
Jonah said that the mandate given to Otii should not be toyed with, stressing that the youths of the state especially the students will not allow the mandate to be stolen.
The leader of the prayer network said that people like them should no longer stay back and watch things go wrong in the state.
“Therefore, we are pleading with traditional and religious leaders to join us in this race to liberate our state”.
Jonah said that the demonstration was going on simultaneously in other parts of the state to show their anger over the way some people tried kill a man in order to scuttle his ambition.
Jonah said their group has over 500 non-violent members, who nevertheless want the people of the state to be aware that things are not going the way they are supposed to be, politically.
