#EndSARS: Five panel members resign in Anambra

    By Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

Five youth members of the Anambra State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on police brutality and extra- judicial killings have resigned.

They are Chijioke Ifediora; Henry Ugwu; Osonwa Chukwuka; Ebelechukwu Ngini and Chibuike Obiwuzie.

They announced their resignation, which took effect yesterday, in an open letter to Governor Willie Obiano.

Ifediora said their decision followed government’s insincerity towards the panel. He also accused the government of failing to provide the panel with the necessary logistics and support it needed to function effectively.

According to Ifediora, people were already seeing members of the panel as conniving with the government to deny them right to fair hearing.

Ifediora said the government has two weeks to fulfil all conditions to reconvene the panel, or youths would hit the streets in protest.

He said: “The government had demonstrated, through its treatment of the panel, that it was not set up to genuinely address the plight of victims and families of police brutality.

“Over 250 pending petitions from the 310 submitted, but no word from government since the panel adjourned early December, whereas it was to resume January 14.

“The application for more sitting days to enable the panel attend to cases had not been granted, and the society now sees members as conniving with government to deny them right to fair hearing.

“We refuse to be pawns in the game of the government, so we hereby resign our appointments and dissociate ourselves from the charade put up to give lip service to the people’s plights.”

  • Factional Ebonyi PDP to probe lawmakers for anti-party activities

Factional Ebonyi PDP to probe lawmakers for anti-party activities

    By Ogochukwu Anioke, Abakaliki

Factional State Working Committee (SWC) of the Ebonyi State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has directed some top party members to appear before its disciplinary committee for alleged anti-party activities.

This was contained in a statement by Chairman Onyekachi Nwebonyi, and Secretary Simon Anyigo.

The Nwebonyi-led faction had suspended some top party members in November 2020 following Governor David Umahi’s defection to the All Progressive Congress (APC). But members of the executive were sacked by the national leadership, and a caretaker committee, led by Fred Udogu, was set up to oversee the party’s affairs.

But the Nwebonyi-led executive announced the suspension of the National Assembly members, the caretaker committee members and two members of the House of Assembly for alleged anti-party activities.

It also challenged it’s dissolution by the national leadership at the Federal High Court.

The court last week sacked the Udogu-led caretaker committee and quashed the dissolution of the state executive.

The Nwebonyi-led SWC said yesterday that those it suspended last year for alleged anti-party activities should appear before the disciplinary committee. He promised that nobody would be victimised.

Those to appear before the disciplinary committee are former governor, now Senator Sam Egwu (Ebonyi North); Chairman, Senate Committee on Sports Obinna Ogba (Ebonyi Central) and Senator Micheal Ama-Nnachi (Ebonyi South).

The statement reads: “The SWC of the PDP, led by Onyekachi Nwebonyi, warns all members and office holders who may want to indulge in anti-party activities to refrain from such as the party will not condone that.

“Those who indulge in such acts will be disciplined in accordance with the party’s constitution. Those who are under suspension are also advised to appear before the disciplinary committee as nobody will be victimised.”

But Publicity Secretary of the Udogu-led caretaker committee, Silas Onu, said members of the Nwebonyi-led led SWC were no longer members of the PDP. He said Nwebonyi lacks the locus standi to ask party members to appear before his purported disciplinary committee, and so no one will appear before the committee.

He said: “There is no disciplinary committee of the PDP in Ebonyi State, and no member of the PDP will appear before any committee set up by Nwebonyi. Nwebonyi is no longer a member of the PDP. There is a judgment but we do not accept it.

“The judge is not a member of PDP and cannot claim to be more interested in a party matter. We are appealing the judgment and those purportedly suspended will not appear because we do not recognise Nwebonyi as a member of the PDP.”

As I speak, the government is into talks with different groups. We want them to come and take over that gas turbine, make it viable, sell power to the state government and Bayelsans. It is our property, it is our investment but let us also be customers to our own investment as offtakers.”

Ex-VC lauds FG for addressing lecture theatres crisis at FUO

    By Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

As the tenure of the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke (FUO), Prof. Seth Accra-Jaja, ended, he has lauded the Federal Government for addressing the lecture theatres crisis in the institution.

The outgone VC said at some point the university did not have structures that could be called lecture theatres but expressed satisfaction that the government had ameliorated the problem to the extent that the school now has well over twelve lecture theatres against one they used to have.

He, however, said the journey was not easy, but attributed his success while he held sway as the institution’s VC to teamwork and collaboration with students, lecturers and stakeholders.

The Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa State, is one of nine federal universities established by the Federal Government under ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in February 2011.

Prof Accra-Jaja, who spoke during his send-off on Thursday at Otuoke, also said when he came on board, the student and staff population stood at 2000 apiece.

He said the development was not proper for a university system, but expressed satisfaction that the situation had been reversed and the student population had grown to over 8,000 at present.

He said: “The success story and fulfilment of promises under my watch as Vice-Chancellor were made possible by the efforts of students, lecturers and management of the institution.

“Under my stewardship, FUO like every human organisation is comparable to a living organism, with its assembly of units functioning as a whole.

“We have improved on what we met on ground. For instance, when I came on board, the student population was 2000 same with staff population. We also had problem of two functional facilities with twelve programmes.”

Accra-Jaja added that his successor would be working from a more befitting edifice, adding that the transformation witnessed by the university is the beginning of better things to come.

The outgoing VC also urged the institution’s lecturers, students and staff to extend same support to his successor, Prof Teddy Charles Adias.

He said, “If we should go by the legal interruption, I don’t think, the youths will come out of the case but there is a saying in law that we should tamper justice with mercy and in justice man was condemned and at the same time in mercy man was redeemed. They are my brothers but something happened, so I had to forgive them.”

The presiding Judge, Justice H. N Ozoh after hearing from the complainant, discharged and acquitted the youths.
