Seven killed, many injured as NURTW leadership crisis turns bloody

    By Ogochukwu Anioke, Abakaliki

At least seven persons have been killed while many were seriously injured as members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers clashed in Effin, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Though details of what led to the clash were still sketchy at the time of filing this report, a source in the community said the clash is an escalation of a leadership crisis in the union.

The source said the faction of the union from Effin clashed with the faction from Ezza Effium over sharing formula for the revenue generated from the park.

He said the clashes spiked into the community leading to casualties on both sides.

Houses, cars and other properties were also torched as the crisis spilled over into the community.

There was pandemonium in the community as the crisis escalated with many deserting the community to neighbouring communities.

Also, health workers and staff of the National Population Commission who were on assignment in the area were cut in the crossfire.

Following the incident, Ebonyi State Government announced a ban on activities of the Union in Effuim Motor Park in Ohaukwu Local Government Area.

The Commissioner for Internal Security and Conflict Resolution in the state, Mr. Stanley Okoro Emegha, announced the ban in Abakaliki, yesterday.

Emegha said the clashes engulfed the entire Effuim and Ezza Effusion communities because the Chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers in the area allowed politicians to meddle into the affairs of the union.

He said that Ohaukwu Local Government authorities would be mandated to take over the park where the incident emanated from.

“It was not something that happened on the grounds of IPOB, neither was it a politically related matter; it was a national transport union case dragging the leadership of a motor park.

“It has been a matter I handled earlier before this time directing that National Union of Road Transport Workers is an organisation recognised by the federal government but has no right in our motor park because we discovered that what they were doing was not in tandem with the peace effort of the state government”, he said

The commissioner said all government personnel on special national assignments in the community, who were trapped by the crisis, had been rescued while the area was calm, following the deployment of security men.

“All the people trapped in the area, not only health personnel, but also staff of the National Population Commission, were safely evacuated. My office deployed security and vehicles on the directive of the governor and all of them were rescued. No scratch on them and the place is calm now.”

Emegha said when he contacted the State Chairman of the union, he claimed to be out of the state and wondered why he should be absent from the state when his union was in crisis.

He warned that the government would bring to book all the politicians, whether serving in the government or in the opposition party, who played a role in sparking up the crisis.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Aliyu Garba, said over nine persons were critically injured and receiving treatment at the hospital.

He said some suspects had also been arrested while investigation continues into the matter.

“Actually, it was my first litmus, but like I told you, normalcy has been restored; we have lots of them that have been arrested and investigations are ongoing.”

Aliyu, who visited the scene, said normalcy had been restored as police operatives and personnel from sister agencies have been moved into the community.

It was also gathered that Governor David Umahi dispatched the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kelechi Igwe, who visited the area to calm the situation.

Ikpeazu recalls suspended Chief of Staff, dissolves State Executive Council

    By Sunny Nwankwo, Aba

The governor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu has approved recall from suspension, his suspended Chief press of Staff, Dr. Anthony Agbazuere.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Chief press Secretary to the State Governor, Mr. Onyebuchi Ememanka in yesterday.

Ememanka who didn’t disclose reasons for the recall of the suspended Chief of Staff said that Agbazuere’s recall was with immediate effect.

Agbazuere was suspended from office by Governor Ikpeazu after a video showing him (Agbazuere) spraying money on selfstyled Onitsha based prophet, Chukwuemeka Ohanemere, AKA Odumeje in his (Agbazuere’s) office. An action that attracted wide condemnation by members of the public who faulted Agbazuere’s action not only as a public office holder, considering his office and the fact that the state government has made Abians to understand that the state is suffering paucity of funds.

Ememanka in the statement also disclosed that the governor of the state also approved the immediate dissolution of the State Executive Council.

“All those affected by this dissolution are to handover all government properties in their possession, together with their handover notes, to their respective Permanent Secretaries.

“The governor expresses his deep appreciation to these men and women for their services to the people of Abia State, and wishes them well for the future,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, it was gathered that some of the serving Commissioners have started lobbying for reappointment by the governor who is expected to announce the new nominated commissioners names to the State House of Assembly for confirmation by next week.

Unconfirmed reports have it that Commissioner for Works, Bob Ogu and a few others including the Education commissioner, Kanaelechi Nwangwa are likely going to make the list of new commissioners’ based on their performance in the office while their is uncertainty about the reappointment of the Trade and Investment Commissioner, Cosmos Ndukwe among others who may not make the current list of commissioner nominees.

Okowa confirms four deaths, 11 hospitalised in Agbor gas fire disaster

    By Okungbowa Aiwerie, Asaba

Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, confirmed that four persons died from injuries sustained in an explosion at a gas plant in Agbor, Ika South LGA.

He said 11 people were hospitalised.

He described the fire disaster as an unfortunate incident and announced that the state government would pick the bill for medical treatment of the victims.

He said the surviving patients were referred to a specialised centre for the treatment of burns at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for further treatment because of the high degree of burns they sustained.

It was an unfortunate fire incident involving a gas station where the tanker was trying to discharge gas.

“We have visited the place and the victims and we have seen the extent of damage caused by the inferno.

We lost four people, three children and a woman.

“After my visit to the two families that lost their dear ones, I also visited the Central Hospital at Agbor where they were initially rushed to with varying degrees of burns, ranging from 80 to 90 percent.

“They were immediately offered medical services even though they wouldn’t have been able to attend to them because of the extent of the burns; so they have to transfer them to the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, and the University of Benin Teaching Hospital with aid of ambulances provided by the state government.

“I have directed the Commissioner for Health to make some deposits at the hospitals to enable them to have full treatment,” he said.

The governor said complaints of inadequate medical care for the victims at the Agbor Central Hospital were misplaced, adding that most people who complained didn’t have an idea of what they were talking about.

“I have listened and heard the complaints. Haven listened to the Medical Director and the extent to which they went; obviously the patients had severe and extensive burns.

“Any burn that is above 30 percent is a major burn and we are talking about 80 to 90 percent burns here.

“So they needed to be moved to UBTH, a specialised centre for the treatment of burns. When you have such a degree of burns, many hospitals will not accept them because the survival rate is low,” Okowa explained.

On siting of gas plants at residential areas, he said he would liaise with the State House of Assembly to come up with a law regulating such investments.

“Obviously, it’s a sad situation and we thank God that this one wasn’t close to a densely populated area, otherwise the damage would have been more.

“I have just told the member representing Ika South Constituency, Hon. Festus Okoh, that I am going to meet with the House of Assembly to enact a law to that effect,” he stated.

  • Edo SSG, APC chair at loggerheads over Obaseki’s performance, COVID-19

Edo SSG, APC chair at loggerheads over Obaseki’s performance, COVID-19

From Bisi Olaniyi, Southsouth Bureau Chief

The Secretary to Edo State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie, and the State’s Caretaker Chairman of the main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), Col. David Imuse (rtd.), are at loggerheads over Governor Godwin Obaseki’s alleged poor performance and insensitivity in properly tackling COVID-19 in Edo.

Imuse declared that the re-elected Obaseki, with four petitions against him at the tribunal in Benin and appeal over his controversial University of Ibadan’s (UI’s) forgery and perjury case at the Court of Appeal in Abuja, was confused about ensuring good governance in Edo, thereby grounding the government to a halt.

Edo APC chairman stated that rather than for Obaseki to be accumulating huge loans for the state’s unborn generations in order to recoup the funds he gave to the tax collectors in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to get the party’s ticket mid last year, he should do the needful by resigning.

Imuse also accused Edo governor of paying lip-service to the fight against the spread of the dreaded COVID-19, thereby exposing residents of the state to hazards.

Responding, Edo SSG, yesterday in an online statement, however, described the state’s APC chairman’s criticisms as always opting for infantile and insensitive remarks, thereby displaying irresponsibility.

In the statement which reads in part, Ogie said: “Edo State Government has continued to perform its statutory responsibility of delivering good governance to the people in the face of economic shocks and social dislocations caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

“Civil and public servants’ salaries are being paid as and when due, contractors are being mobilised monthly and are back at sites, retired workers are getting their pensions and operators of businesses are paying their taxes.

“We are also making good progress with the management of the COVID-19 outbreak, particularly in reducing the infection rate. We have also got commendation from the Federal Government on our case management regime, with emissaries sent to understudy our home-care protocol, as a result of its efficacy.

“The government, in the last two months, has undertaken comprehensive capacity building programmes for workers in the civil and public service, to prep them up to deploy technology in governance. A widely-publicised recruitment exercise has also been ongoing to inject not less than 1,600 professionals into the public service.

“In the last 30 days, thousands of Edo people and investors have processed their Certificate of Occupancy (CofO) through the Edo State Geographic Information Service Agency.”

Anambra 2021: Ojukwu’s mentorship edge for my guber dream – APC aspirant

    From Sunny Nwankwo, Aba

A governorship aspirant in Anambra State, Sir Azuka Okwuosa has said that his interest to contest the November 6 gubernatorial poll was born out of his desire to provide true democracy and its dividends to the people of the state in line with the convictions of the late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu.

Okwuosa who is vying for the exalted seat in the state the under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), said he was mentored by the late Ikemba following his long association with him.

He further revealed that Ojukwu created an indelible mark of greatness and potential in his life and political activities, insisting that he could not have achieved such feat without his (Ojukwu) mentorship who he served, learnt from and followed till death.

He lamented what he described as negative impact of bad administration of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) government in the state and its effect on the downward trend in development of the state.

Okwuosa, a former Commissioner in the state,  restated his preparedness to return the state to its lost glory if elected.

“What Anambra needs is a home-grown and experienced politician who lived amongst the people and understood the state properly,” he added.

  • Confusion in Rivers APC over membership revalidation

Confusion in Rivers APC over membership revalidation

    Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

CONFUSION has enveloped members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Rivers State, following the party’s membership revalidation billed to commence on January 25.

Already, the party had been hit with two conflicting court orders obtained by its two factions in the state ahead of the exercise.

The High Court sitting in Rivers State granted an order of interim injunction restraining the party’s National Executives, Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee from conducting the exercise in Rivers pending the determination of the motion on notice.

The order was granted following a suit filed by Mr. Nna Okpara Egburuka and Mr. Gilbert Kilsi, members of the party from the faction controlled by Senator Magnus Abe.

The APC, the party’s National Caretaker Committee Chairman, Mai Mala Buni and Mr. Isaac Ogbobula, were named as defendants to the suit.

The order was granted by Justice O. Graham, and signed by the Court’s Assistant Chief Registrar (Litigation), Patricia Victor-Nwoke.

A copy of it said: “That an order of interim injunction be and is hereby made restraining the first defendant’s National Executives, Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, (CECPC) and the defendants acting by themselves or through their priciest or agents, however described from scheduling, sanctioning, or conducting any membership registration exercise of the first defendant in Rivers State in the absence of validly elected ward executives of the party in Rivers State pending the hearing and determination of motion on notice for interlocutory injunction”.

But another court order, which was obtained from the High Court sitting in Abuja by party members loyal to the Transport Minister, Rotimi Amaechi also resurfaced in Rivers.

The order signed by Bello Ibrahim asked the defedants or any person acting through them to allow the party and all the members of the Rivers State chapter of the caretaker committees at the state, local government and ward levels to without inhibition perform their functions including the membership revalidation.

It was gathered that the counter orders had generated tension among the party members, who were said to be confused about the possibility of participating in such exercise.

A top member of Abe camp, who spoke in confidence said the ordered issued by the Port Harcourt division of the High Court superseded the one obtained by the Amaechi’s group from the Abuja Division.

“The truth is that Rivers has a peculiar case because there is a subsisting Supreme Court judgement, which indicates that only the executives empowered by a party congress can handle the affairs of the party.

“What we are saying is that in the spirits of that judgement, the party should wait till after its Congress in Rivers before undertaking such major party exercise. They ran to the Abuja High Court to get an order, but the order we have in Rivers is superior going by the hierarchy of courts”, he said.

But the Amaechi’s camp was reportedly making arrangements to go ahead with the exercise despite fears of possible violence.

A notable APC member, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, raised the alarm that some party leaders in the state were planning to disrupt the exercise in their wards by deploying thugs.
