  • ‘Govt must provide jobs as panacea to youth unrest’

‘Govt must provide jobs as panacea to youth unrest’

    Kunle Akinrinade

ONLY provision of massive jobs can curb youth unrest in the country, a clergyman, Prophet Joseph Olu Ayeni has said.

The cleric, who is the founder and senior pastor of Voice of Salvation Evangelical Ministry, Ketu, Lagos State made the remarks on Wednesday while announcing a weeklong annual convention of the church starting from November 29.

He said the youths of the country who are mostly unemployed deserved to be meaningfully engaged to discourage them from committing crimes.

‘’ With what we recently witnessed during the EndSARS protests that rocked the country and the role played by the youths, the government should initiative genuine moves that would lead to a massive provision of jobs for our teeming unemployed young men who are major actors in violence and crime.

‘’The job of the church is to offer morals, godliness, and spiritual guidance to youths and their parents, but a hungry man is not only a hungry man but can also be driven to crime by hopelessness as a result of having no job to do. Hence, both the federal and state government, as well as local government areas, must facilitate jobs for these young Nigerians.

He added: ‘’ Our annual convention starts on November 29 and ends in the first weekend of December/ This year’s convention promises to uplift and bless our members and non-members spiritually with heavenly grace from God.’’

‘’First Sunday of December is significantly set aside for celebration because we haven’t lost any member of our church since our church started several years ago.’’

Southeast youths condemn Operation Crocodile Smile VI

    By Chris Njoku, Owerri

The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has condemned the kick off of Operation Crocodile Smile VI in the region.

President-General of the coalition Goodluck Ibem, in a statement on Thursday, described the move as ill-timed and ill-advised. He said it was a calculated attempt to use brute force in administering a peaceful region.

The statement reads: “Such operations by the Army usually end in cutting our youths in the name and under the pretext of security enforcement. The infamous operation Python Dance or Egwu Eke, in 2017, still haunts the collective memory of Southeast youth to this day.

“The Army should rather focus its operation in Borno State and other northern states where Boko Haram terrorists and insurgents have taken root. We are convinced that there could be sinister motives by the Army’s Operation Crocodile Smile VI in the Southeast and Southsouth.

“We advise the Army to take its Operation Crocodile Smile Vl to Borno, Katsina, Adamawa and other northern states ravaged by Boko Haram terrorists and bandits. The Southeast is not in any war and is very peaceful; it is totally out of place to bring in the Army to a peaceful locality.”

The communiqué reads: “The congress will continue with the ongoing withdrawal of services until concrete and tangible steps to curb insecurity are seen to be made by the government. While this decision may appear painful and insensitive to the public, NMA wants to state that the rising spate of kidnapping of about 10 more victims since the onset of this strike further justifies its position.

“We appeal to our members to remain steadfast and committed to this decision as nobody is immune to this devilish act. NMA calls on other professional bodies and Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to support us in demanding for improved security from the government.”

  • ‘Litigations against Diri’s administration hampering development’

‘Litigations against Diri’s administration hampering development’

    By Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

Bayelsa State has said the incessant litigations against Governor Douye Diri’s administration is hampering development.

Commissioner for Information and Orientation Ayebaina Duba, who spoke after the State Executive Council (SEC) meeting on Thursday, lamented that the numerous suits against the Diri-led administration were intended to distract, inconvenience and slow down the wheel of development.

About 45 Non-Governmental Organisations, under the aegis of Bayelsa Non-Governmental Forum (BANGOF), filed a suit against the government for its finances and borrowings.

Duba said the state recognised the constitutional rights of the NGOs to sue the government, but the court actions were nothing more than fishing expeditions, distractions and a drain on the state’s lean resources.

He said: “Whereas the appropriate response will be made by the state’s lawyers, we wish to note that these sorts of suits, which are nothing more than fishing expeditions, distractions and a drain on the lean resources, will not be helpful in our quest to build a prosperous and united Bayelsa.

“This is yet another episode of a well-established but unfortunate pattern of over 12 litigations which have amounted to nothing more than judicial harassments and disturbances that this regime has been subjected to…

“It is difficult to evade the conclusion that opponents of this government, having failed to unseat Diri through frivolous suits, have purposed to distract and inconvenience it and prevent or slow down the wheel of development.”

  • Obiano, Ubah renew battle over alleged N25b bond

Obiano, Ubah renew battle over alleged N25b bond

    By Nwanosike Onu, Awka

Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano and Senator Ifeanyi Ubah (Anambra South) have renewed their war of words over an alleged N25 billion bond.

Ubah challenged the governor to tell the people why he took the bond, but Obiano described the allegation as bizarre.

The senator, in a voice note, said the government raised a N25 billion bond from the Debt Management Office (DMO), Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning for failed federal roads which the state has rehabilitated or reconstructed.

According to him, the bond was approved without the National Assembly’s knowledge.

But Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment C-Don Adinuba said a bond cannot be issued secretly as the House of Assembly, DMO, Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and Economic Planning, the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) must be involved.

He said: “Every bit of the transaction must be transparent and made public. The state has not raised any money from the DMO or the Federal Ministry of Finance, under a bond or any financial instrument, from any institution or organisation.

“Our record of prudent financial management and integrity is well acknowledged far and near. It is tough to speculate how Ubah came about the N25 billion bond which the state purportedly raised surreptitiously from the DMO/Federal Ministry of Finance. The only thing that any individual can possibly think about is the promissory notes which the government received in two tranches from the DMO/Federal Ministry of Finance for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of failed federal roads.

“Anambra is today regarded as a model in governance. Despite limited resources, it is ahead of every other state in a lot of areas, including the employment rate which economists regard as the most important indicator of economic performance.”

The GOC assured criminals within the Southeast and Cross Rivers State that they would meet with decisive and appropriate action by the security agencies.
