Lawyer sues Bayelsa Assembly over state’s debt

    By Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

A human rights lawyer, Ebikebuna Aluzu, has sued the Bayelsa State House of Assembly over the state’s debt profile.

The plaintiff is praying the House to release information concerning the report of the state’s Auditor-General on the accounts for the year ended December 31, 2012 to December 31, 2019.

The matter has been adjourned till December 21 for further mention.

The development follows last Thursday’s approval by the Assembly for Governor Douye Diri to secure another N17 billion loan from multiple sources to fund his administration’s policies and programmes. The House of Assembly expeditiously granted the approval upon return from its long vacation.

Checks at the website of the Debt Management Office (DMO) showed that the state’s debt profile, as at June 30, stood at N150.05 billion while as at March 31, the debt stock was N154.9 billion, indicating a marginal decline.

Bayelsa residents lament as robbers, cultists take over Yenagoa

    By Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

With the near absence of police operatives at their different duty posts, armed robbers and armed cultists have taken over many communities in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.

Lately, many residents of the state capital have suffered hoodlums’ attacks as robbers and cultists armed with axes, cutlasses and guns invade their houses on a daily basis.

It was learnt that virtually all parts of Yenagoa metropolis are affected by the nefarious activities of the hoodlums who unleash mayhem on the helpless residents with impunity.

While cult groups engaged in violent raids of popular Swali market and some residents of Amarata, Tombia, Obele, Onopa, Biogbolo, Ekeki, Tombia, Agudama, among other areas, armed robbers use commercial tricycle, popularly known as Keke NAPEP to raid residents at night along major roads in the state capital.

Though the Bayelsa capital did not witness violence compared to Lagos and some other states, it was gathered that many officers and men of the police have dumped their duty posts in the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests that rocked the country.

The state-owned security outfit, Operation Doo Akpo, that was gifted some security vehicles under Dickson are conspicuously missing on the streets of Yenagoa compounding the woes of residents who have nowhere to run to.

A journalist and state correspondent of a national newspaper escaped a robbery attack by whiskers on Thursday night along Azikoro road, near the Ekeki Police station.

The journalist, who did not want his name mentioned, said: “The incident occurred opposite the popular  Unique Bar. I survived their attack by whiskers  but one of the girls standing on the roadside was robbed of her phone and other valuables.

“They operated in a keke and were fully armed. Up till now, there’s no police on the road. Are they on strike? I really cannot fathom why the entire metropolis has been taken over by robbers and miscreants. The authorities should let us know why the police are not on their duty posts. I think it is obvious that the security operatives have abandoned us to our fate.”

Also a newspaper vendor, identified simply as Henry, was visited by robbers in his Azikoro village residence where they robbed him of his phones, money and other valuables in his apartment.

A visit to the Yenagoa office of a telecom giant, MTN, showed a sharp increase in persons seeking to recover their lines stolen with their phones.

Reacting to the development, the spokesperson for the Bayelsa State Police Command, Asinim Butswat, said “We commend Bayelsans for the maturity exhibited during the EndSARS protest as the command did not witness any riotous protest. The command will intensify patrols and surveillance to address the current security situation in Yenagoa and its environs.”

“The North, through President Buhari, will enjoy uninterrupted eighth years tenure till 2023, and definitely with fairness and equity, the President will surely hand over to a Nigeria from Southeastern part of the country.

“It is our prayer as members of APC that Mr. President will hand over to a Nigerian from Igbo stock as the only Southern zone yet to take a shot at the Presidency since 1999.

THE chiefs, elders, women, youths and people of Opu Nembe Kingdom of Nembe Local Government Area of Bayelsa State on Saturday protested against an oil major, Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company Limited, over its alleged economic rape and environmental liabilities.

They, therefore, gave a quit notice to the oil company with effect from November 14, 2020, to leave the Oil Mining Licence (OML 29), saying that Aiteo was no longer welcome in their communities afterwards.

During the peaceful protest, which took place yesterday, the chiefs of the kingdom were all dressed in black attires, a development that indicated that they were mourning the “death” of the oil major in the kingdom.

Addressing journalists at Opu Nembe comprising Nembe-Bassambiri Kingdom, the Chairman, Council of Chiefs, Chief Oriaingo Oruwari, said they were protesting against national economic sabotage, strangulation of host communities, ecological destruction, contract racketeering and corporate wickedness.

Oruwari expressed the kingdom’s resolute rejection the oil firm imposed upon them as the joint venture operator of Nigeria’s most historic and highest onshore producing OML 29 despite their strong objection from the start.

He said since five years since Shell Petroleum Development Company allegedly surreptitiously sold OML 29  to Aiteo without any consideration of host communities’ pending legal and equitable rights, it had been anguish on all sides for the communities.

AIG Zone 9 denies imposition of chairman on PCRC members

     Sunny Nwankwo, Umuahia

THE Assistant Inspector-General of the Nigeria Police Force in-charge of zone 9, Headquarters, Umuahia, Abia State, Baba Tijjani has debunked media reports that he imposed the incumbent chairman of the Police Community Relations Community (PCRC), Dr. Collins Obi on members.

AIG Tijjani in a statement signed on his behalf by the zone’s Public Relations Officer; SP Janet Egwu who described the allegation as baseless and unfounded, reminded anyone accusing Tijjani to recall that he (Tijjani) had not been transferred to the zone 9 Command Headquarters in 2018 when they (PCRC) conducted their election.

According to Egwu, the incumbent leadership of PCRC led by Dr. Obi was handed over to him by his predecessor, AIG Wilson Inalegwu, now retired.

Egwu while countering the allegation that the incumbent zone 9 PCRC leadership has served for ten years said that the command views the continued running of the zone’s PCRC by caretaker committee set up by the National Body of the Police Community Relations Committee as a clear manifestation of unconstitutional conduct.

Putting the record straight, Egwu said “The allegation that he-Dr. Obi has served for ten years is false. His first tenure started in 2014 and expired in 2018. During the 2018 election, Dr. Obi was re-elected for a second tenure which will expire in 2022. PCRC Constitution in Article 20(1) and (2) is relevant

“..However, it is pertinent to note that this is the third (3rd) time caretaker committee is set up since 2019, from the onset; Sir James Uzoma was appointed as caretaker chairman in a letter dated 30th March, 2019.

“The second appointment of Chief (Hon.) Egenti Raymond Ezenwata (KSM) as chairman of a seven (7) man committee to function for three months in a letter dated June 30th, 2020.

“Surprisingly, the third letter for the caretaker committee appointing Chima Chukwunyere as chairman in a letter dated 2nd October, 2020 was sent.

“In view of the above series of caretaker committees set up by the National Body, it is a clear manifestation of unconstitutional conduct.”

AIG Tijjani in apparent move to nip the zone 9 PCRC leadership squabble which has lingered over the years in the bud informed the national body of the PCRC that the Command would henceforth recognise and deal with the Obi led leadership whose tenure, he maintained would end in 2022.

“Zone 9 Command Headquarters hereby affirm that Dr. Sir Collins Ugochukwu Obi and his elected members remain Zone 9 PCRC recognised Executives and comfortable with same.”

    Ebonyi Assembly suspends lawmaker indefinitely

    By Ogochukwu Anioke, Abakaliki

Ebonyi State House of Assembly on Friday suspended indefinitely the member representing Ebonyi North West Constituency, Victor Aleke, over alleged misconduct.

This followed a motion of urgent public importance moved by the House leader, Victor Chukwu and seconded by the member representing Ohaukwu North, Chinedu Awoh.

Chukwu also moved a motion that the Chairman of Ohaukwu Local Government Area, Clement Odah, be suspended alongside the lawmaker.

He said the motion stemmed from the findings of the ad hoc committee set up by the House to investigate the financial activities of Ohaukwu Local Government.

The leader said findings of the committee indicted both Aleke and Odah, and that there was need for the House to sanction them to serve as a deterrent to others that might indulge in similar acts in future.

Chukwu said the committee discovered a lot of financial improprieties, including inflation of contracts sum allegedly by Odah’s administration, which according to him, shouldn’t go unpunished.

He alleged that Aleke who was a member of the committee became a’a green snake in a green grass’, by allegedly conniving with Odah to sabotage the assignment; an act he said was against the House rule.

Chukwu said Aleke had “committed other infractions in the past which he described as not just dishonorable, but breaches the peace of the House, adding that such should not be overlooked any longer.

He urged the House to suspend both Aleke and Odah pending when the determination of the allegations against them.

But the motion for the suspension of Odah was stepped down by the Speaker, Rt. Hon Francis Nwifuru, who said it would be discussed during the next plenary, while Aleke’s was upheld.

Meanwhile, there was a mild drama as the member representing Ezza South State Constituency, Hon Chris Usulor, opposed the Speaker.

He requested that there should be headcount of the lawmakers at the plenary to know those in support or against the suspension of Aleke, before he makes his ruling.

But Nwifuru quickly told him that his request was against the House rule.

Aleke was not present in the chamber when his suspension took place on Friday.

On whether the suspension of Aleke had any connection with his alleged refusal to decamp to the APC with Governor Umahi, the Chairman, House Committee on Information, and Member representing Ishielu South, Hon Arinze Chukwu, said it had nothing to do with defection.
