NEFGAD urges Tinubu to stop trial of hunger protesters

*Says trial of minors not good for president’s administration’s image

The Network for the Actualisation of Social Growth and Viable Development (NEFGAD) has urged President Bola Tinubu to end the trial of #EndBadGovernance protesters who were arraigned on Friday.

Four teenagers among the 118 people arraigned before a Federal High Court in Abuja in connection with the protest collapsed a few minutes after the commencement of proceedings.

They were accused of treason following their arrest during the August 1 to August 10 #EndBadGovernance protests.

The arraignment of the teenagers in particular drew wide criticism from many quarters yesterday.

In a statement signed by its Country Head of Office Akingunola Omoniyi, the organisation said the trial of the minors was not good for president Tinubu’s administration’s image.

Akingunola said that the “look and appearances of the suspects speak loud enough to conscience of reason and for those that care to listen, that the government cannot wage war against its future leaders with this kind of charges, and in this fashion and style.”

The statement added: “Even if the matter succeeds in court and the juveniles end up in prison, the government and the nation are still the big losers.

“NEFGAD is a citizen sector advocacy group with keen interest in the greatness of the country and its leaders, hence, this clarion call is for President Bola Tinubu alone and not to anyone, and it is our expectation that he listens and act fast by halting the trial before it is too late.”

According to NEFGAD, Justice Egwuatu granted bail to 67 of the 76 minors that were arraigned to the tune of N10m each.

Ex-minister urges Nigerian businesses to adopt Chinese networking approach

Former Minister of Power, Professor Barth Nnaji has called on Nigerian businesses to adopt a social network-driven approach, taking cues from the Chinese Guanxi business culture, for increased business opportunities.

Nnaji, who is the Chief Executive Officer of Geometric Power Aba, Abia State, gave this advice at the opening of the 3-day Business Summit held at Amadeo Event Centre, Enugu with the theme: “Transposition of Interest in Service Delivery”.

The event was organised by GMD of the COPEN Group, Dr Ugochukwu Chime, under the corporate social expression through Barnabas Hope Foundation, to provide a platform for knowledge exchange, networking, and discussions on emerging business trends in Nigeria.

The former minister, who delivered a keynote speech at the event, explained that the Chinese social network-driven approach to doing business, also known as “Guanxi” emphasizes building strong personal relationships, leveraging social networks, and prioritizing trust and reciprocity, which usually lead to significant business opportunities.

He noted that such business approach among other things emphasised on personal relationships in building trust, loyalty, and familiarity with partners, suppliers, and clients, adding that it enhances social networks by leveraging connections through family, friends, alumni, and professional associations.

Nnaji added that one of the benefits of such approach was that it helps the individuals maintain dignity and reputation in business interactions as well as pioritizing collective interests over individual goals.

He added that such approaches usually lead to increased trust and cooperation; improved communication and efficiency; enhanced reputation and credibility; better access to market information and long-term partnerships and collaborations.

While appreciating the promotion of interactions as part of the objectives of the summit, which gives rise to ideas or creativity, Nnaji lamented the exodus of young professionals from Nigeria and advocated stakeholder capitalism as a more sustainable business model.

He also said, “for our economy to have a turn around, we need to be sensitive to our environment, energy to drive the industries and entrepreneurship to facilitate economic growth”.

  • Rivers Ijaw blasts INC-led Okaba for taking sides in crisis, choosing ethnicity over justice, fairness

Rivers Ijaw blasts INC-led Okaba for taking sides in crisis, choosing ethnicity over justice, fairness

The Rivers Ijaw Peoples Congress (RIPCO) on Wednesday faulted the recent position of the Ijaw National Congress (INC) led by Prof. Benjamin Okaba, saying Okaba betrayed his position by choosing to take sides in the political crisis rocking Rivers State.

In his recent statement, Okaba among other things portrayed the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, as a peacemaker; the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as the aggressor and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the enabler of the crisis.

Okaba, who claimed that though the Presidential peace accord was skewed to favour Wike, said Fubara met all the conditions for peace contained in the agreement.

He said within three weeks after the agreement, the 27 lawmakers defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) accusing federal institutions of supporting the actions of Wike against Fubara.

But in an open letter on Wednesday, RIPCO faulted the claims of Okaba, saying the INC press release was laced with numerous falsehood and half truths.

The letter, which was signed by RIPCO’s Leader, Senator George Thompson Sekibo; Director-General, Dr. Rowland Sekibo and Secretary, Dr. Erastus Awortu, said Okaba’s approach had only succeeded in escalating the tension instead of calming it.

The letter said: “Rather than calming the tensions, the INC President’s approach appears to exacerbate the crisis in Rivers State. For reasons only known to him,
Professor Okaba has chosen to allow the situation to escalate further. His statements, marked by inconsistency and lack of clarity, leave us no choice but to correct the narrative for the benefit of the public.

“As his relatives and fellow Ijaw brothers under the INC umbrella, we feel responsible for ensuring that the public receives a more balanced and accurate understanding, especially given his failure to live up to the expectations of a leader and father figure for the Ijaw people of Nigeria”.

Knocking out all the claims of Okaba, RIPCO highlighted the half truths contained in Okaba’s statements and harped on the actions and utterances of Fubara that rubbished the whole essence of the presidential peace agreement.

The letter said: “First, the purported defection he mentioned was before the President’s intervention.

“Governor Siminalayi Fubara, after agreeing and signing the terms of the intervention agreement, gathered people in the government house the next morning, where they publicly condemned the president’s intervention as unconstitutional and attacked the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the President.

“Governor Fubara, in a meeting with some Ijaw leaders from Bayelsa, declared that the document he signed was unconstitutional, that he signed it to keep the Assembly members floating, and that it was just a mere paper without legal backing.

“Thereafter, Governor Fubara sponsored some so-called elders and civil society to challenge the Presidential Intervention Peace Agreement in court and declined to uphold its contents. In
contrast, the Assembly members withdrew their matters and impeachment notices already
served on him in accordance with the terms of the Intervention Peace Agreement.

“Governor Fubara, in utter disregard of the truce, mobilised thugs and trucks in an attempt to demolish the residential quarters of the Assembly members, but for the timely intervention of security agents.

“In furtherance of his contempt of the agreement, Governor Fubara ignored the Assembly and continues to run the state without an Assembly including not laying the 2024 Budget to this day”.

The letter continued: ” In disregard of the truce, he refused to conduct local Government elections. He went ahead to set up Caretaker Committees for the LGAs even after the Supreme Court had made the decision on it. In furtherance of his arrogance, he did not send the names of the caretaker committee members to the Assembly for screening and confirmation.

“The governor’s attempt to conduct LG elections was only after the Supreme Court’s judgement on local Government autonomy. This made the purported elections run foul of all known democratic regulations. We can go on and on, but our attempt is not to expose him further for his fictitious claims”.

RIPCO in the letter insisted that Okaba’s statement was done in bad faith and mentioned instances, which Okaba betrayed his office and the principles of justice and fairness

The letter said: “The Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress, foreseeing the potential for the political situation to deteriorate, took proactive steps to address the issue. On the 4th of June 2024, RIPCO sent a
delegation of 200 Ijaw sons and daughters, led by Senator Chief George Thompson Sekibo CON, to the INC headquarters in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

” This delegation met with the INC Executive, including President Benjamin Okaba, to discuss the deepening political crisis in Rivers State. RIPCO called for the INC’s intervention, as the
crisis had begun to divide the Ijaw people in Rivers State, with factions loyal to either Governor Fubara or Barrister Wike.

“We cautioned that if the INC took sides, it could lead to open conflict within the Ijaw community, reminding the leadership that not all Ijaw people could be expected to align with a single political party or faction within a political party.

“RIPCO also observed that inflammatory comments from Ijaw leaders outside of Rivers State have intensified the tensions rather than contributing to a peaceful resolution.

“We urged the INC to intervene and broker peace between Governor Fubara and Barrister Wike to prevent further political division among the Ijaw people in Rivers State.

“INC’s Initial Commitment to Peace In response to these concerns, the INC Executive, led by President Okaba, acknowledged the need for intervention. The INC leadership thanked the RIPCO delegation for their efforts to promote peace and committed to undertaking a peace mission in Rivers State.

” Professor Okaba personally promised to lead an INC delegation to meet with all factions involved at a round table and primarily bring all Ijaw sons and daughters together”.

The group said on June 13, 2024, the INC President fulfilled part of his commitment by visiting Rivers State, where he met with Ijaw factions loyal to Governor Fubara and those loyal to Barrister Wike, including RIPCO leadership, but the group said it doubted the sincerity of the gesture because Okaba came alone without members of his executive.

On their agreements, RIPCO said: “Okaba solicited that the RIPCO members maintain peace in Rivers State, even in the face of adversity.

“The INC President promised to lead a group of respected Ijaw statesmen to foster peace in Rivers State and address the crisis on two fronts. He would engage the Ijaw factions in Rivers State to unite the community. He would then initiate a roundtable discussion between Governor Fubara and Barrister
    Wike.

“All these efforts were expected to conclude before the end of July 2024.
Having reached these commendable agreements, the leadership of the Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress is still waiting for Professor Okaba, the INC President, to follow through on his promise to convene the two crucial meetings aimed at securing peace between the two main Ijaw factions and between Governor Fubara and Bar Nyesom Wike, the FCT Minister”.

Rivers Ijaw people said having failed to fulfill his promise of intervening in the matter, Okaba lacked the moral standing to pass a judgement on the matter.

RIPCO said: “Okaba’s premature condemnation of one party and open support of another undermine the principles of justice and fairness that the Ijaw people have always upheld.

“It is a murder of justice on the altar of ethnicity. It is stated that ‘he who comes to equity must come with clean hands’. It is pretty evident that Professor Okaba cannot adjudicate on a sensitive matter, such as this, because his hands are no longer clean.

“Therefore, we received the INC President Professor Okaba’s recent press release with great surprise and disappointment. Rather than advancing the peace process that he had previously committed to lead, the INC President has instead issued a public statement that not only condemns Barrister Wike but also places sole blame on him for the tensions in Rivers State. At the same time, Professor Okaba praises Governor Fubara as the leader pursuing a path of peace.

“This selective and inflammatory rhetoric starkly contrasts his earlier pledge to maintain neutrality and facilitate reconciliation. His actions appear to undermine the very principles of fairness and diplomacy that are critical for resolving the crisis.

“We believe that Professor Okaba, having failed to act as he initially promised, no longer holds the moral authority to pass judgment on this sensitive issue— particularly while the matter is still pending adjudication in his court.

“By prematurely condemning one party while openly supporting another, he compromises the core values of justice and impartiality that the Ijaw people have always championed.

“His behaviour represents a grave miscarriage of justice, where ethnic bias takes precedence over
fairness. As the saying goes, ‘he who comes to equity must come with clean hands,’ and it is clear that Professor Okaba’s hands are no longer clean. This raises serious concerns about his ability to lead a complex race, such as the Ijaw ethnic nationality, with the impartiality and integrity it demands”.

RIPCO insisted on its call for for fairness and unity in confronting the crisis rocking Rivers saying Ijaw people had long been known for their impartiality and commitment to fairness in handling disputes, regardless of the individuals involved.

“In this spirit of justice, we, the Rivers Ijaw People’s Congress, reject Professor Okaba’s one-sided narrative and condemn his divisive actions, which can set the Ijaws in Rivers State against themselves. His behaviour suggests that he is not interested in resolving the crisis but rather in deepening it for reasons best known to him.

*We expect Professor Okaba, though not of Rivers State, and the INC leadership to guide themselves as statesmen in their conduct and utterances to uphold the unity, peace, and cohesiveness of the Ijaw people wherever they are found, particularly in Rivers State.

” We urge all stakeholders to disregard Professor Okaba, the INC President’s baseless claims and act in the best interests of Rivers State and the broader Ijaw community in Rivers State, putting aside personal and political differences for lasting peace.

“Finally, our brother, the INC president, has only murdered justice based on ethnicity, which amounts to a chilling betrayal of fairness”.

Forum backs Umeoji for Anambra gov poll

The Anambra Leaders Forum has asked Chukwuma Umeoji to join the Anambra governorship election race next year on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

The Forum noted that Umeoji’s experience, grassroots popularity, and proven leadership make him the ideal flagbearer to unify the people and secure victory against the incumbent, Governor Charles Soludo.

The Convener of the forum, Nwafor Peter at a press conference, said the Anambra Leaders Forum was united in its commitment to ensuring Umeoji becomes the APC flagbearer.

He said the Forum would purchase and bankroll the APC governorship election Nominations and Expression of interest form for Umeoji to show how serious it is.

“The Anambra Leaders Forum strongly supports his candidacy and will work tirelessly to ensure he emerges victorious as the APC flagbearer. We urge all Anambrarians to join us in this critical mission for the future of our state,” Peter said.

He added: “Hon. Umeoji’s extensive experience serving the people at different political levels has cemented his reputation as a leader with strong grassroots ties. His ability to engage effectively with the local communities ensures that he understands the pressing needs of Anambrarians. His political success, including his track record of listening to the masses, makes him the candidate who will address real challenges faced by the people.

“With a distinguished career in the legislature and public service, Umeoji brings vast experience to governance. He is known for his pragmatic approach to policy implementation, which ensures inclusive growth, security, and economic progress. Umeoji’s leadership experience within the National Assembly has positioned him to leverage national resources for state development.

“The Anambra Leaders Forum stands united in its commitment to ensuring Umeoji becomes the APC flagbearer. As a demonstration of our dedication, we will volunteer to purchase the APC governorship nomination form for Umeoji. This gesture is a testament to our belief in his capacity to lead Anambra into a brighter future. His candidacy represents a fresh start for the state, with leaders and citizens alike eager for genuine progress.”

Peter said governor Soludo’s alleged failure means the APC would win the state if the party gave the ticket to Umeoji.

According to him, Umeoji is the right choice to lead Anambra out of stagnation and into a future of growth and prosperity.

He said: “Governor Soludo’s administration has been marked by economic stagnation and an inability to fulfill key promises. Issues ranging from unemployment to deteriorating infrastructure continue to plague the state. Umeoji presents a much-needed alternative—a leader with practical solutions to create jobs, improve local economies, and enhance security across the state.

“Governor Soludo’s unpopularity and failure to deliver on key areas have opened a clear path for Hon. Umeoji to gain wide support across party lines. Umeoji’s political influence extends across constituencies, making him capable of garnering widespread votes and unseating the incumbent with ease. His strong affiliation with the APC at the national level will also position Anambra for federal support and partnerships, creating more opportunities for the state’s development.”

He added: “Anambrarians are yearning for change, and Umeoji offers the leadership that will prioritise their welfare, growth, and security. Under his leadership, Anambra will witness transformation in key sectors like education, healthcare, agriculture, and industrial development.

“Anambra cannot afford another term under a leader disconnected from the needs of the people. Umeoji’s candidacy will galvanize a movement against the status quo, uniting Anambrarians in the pursuit of a prosperous and secure future. The upcoming election represents a critical opportunity to remove Soludo’s failed leadership and elect a leader genuinely committed to the state’s progress.”

It features the Rainforest Gallery, an exhibition building within a replanted rainforest, the Art Guesthouse for visiting artists and researchers, and the Artisans Hall, which reimagines traditional Benin architecture as a space for contemporary artisans to showcase their work. Through partnerships, MOWAA connects contemporary art with West Africa’s rich heritage, creating opportunities for artists and scholars from Africa and its diaspora.

  • CSO scores Budget Minister Bagudu high

CSO scores Budget Minister Bagudu high

The Initiative for Transparent Leadership (ITL) has commended Minister of Budget and Planning Senator Abubakar Atiku Bagudu for what it described as his outstanding performance in promoting transparency, inclusivity, and sustainable development.

At a briefing, the CSO praised Bagudu’s efforts in ensuring an equal spread of budgetary allocations across the six geo-political zones.

The group said that marks a significant departure from previous administrations where certain regions were favored over others.

Its Executive Director,  Fabian Opialu, said under Bagudu’s leadership, the budget follows an even spread, ensuring that all six geo-political zones benefit from concrete projects that meet tangible realities on the ground.

This level of accountability, he said, is unprecedented and highlights Bagudu’s commitment to transparency in governance.

The CSO also commended the improved allocation of resources and their prioritization.

Opialu lamented that previous administrations struggled with ensuring that key sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security received the necessary funding.

However, he noted that Senator Bagudu has worked meticulously to ensure that resources are allocated to projects based on national priorities and needs, rather than political considerations.

Opialu further said that this has led to visible improvements in several key sectors across all regions of the country.

He said Senator Bagudu’s actions have been firmly in support of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which prioritizes the economic integration of marginalized groups, particularly women and individuals with disabilities.

The CSO added that the Minister has played a critical role in ensuring that these groups are not only included but are also empowered to contribute meaningfully to the economy.

He said: “Unlike previous administrations where budget allocations often remained theoretical, under Senator Bagudu’s leadership, there has been a strong focus on implementation and monitoring of projects.

“For the first time in many years, we are witnessing robust systems being put in place to monitor projects and their progress, ensuring that funds allocated to specific regions are utilized for the intended purposes. This level of accountability is unprecedented and highlights the commitment of Senator Bagudu to transparency in governance.

“Furthermore, one of the most remarkable successes of the current administration is the improved allocation of resources and their prioritization. Previous administrations struggled with ensuring that key sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and security received the necessary funding.

“However, Senator Bagudu has worked meticulously to ensure that resources are allocated to projects based on national priorities and needs, rather than political considerations. This has led to visible improvements in several key sectors across all regions of the country.

“Another significant achievement under Senator Bagudu’s tenure is the periodic review of projects and programs to ensure conformity with the objectives laid out in the national development plan. The ability to adapt and make necessary changes to the implementation process is a sign of great foresight. Regular evaluations have allowed the Ministry to correct course when necessary, ensuring that projects remain aligned with the government’s overall goals of promoting inclusivity and sustainable growth.

“Additionally, Senator Atiku Bagudu’s actions have been firmly in support of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, which has inclusivity at its core. This agenda prioritizes the economic integration of marginalized groups, particularly women and individuals with disabilities.

“Senator Bagudu has played a critical role in Ensuring that these groups are not only included but are also empowered to contribute meaningfully to the economy. Unlike in previous administrations where inclusivity was merely a slogan, the current administration, through Senator Bagudu’s efforts, has made tangible progress in integrating these groups into the economic system a realistic endeavor.

“Another key governance issue that Senator Bagudu has helped address is youth unemployment. Nigeria’s youth population is one of the largest in the world, yet successive administrations have struggled to create meaningful opportunities for this demographic even on their meticulous planning, but only touching the surface.

“Senator Bagudu has been a trailblazer in contributing practical strategies for implementing the administration’s youth empowerment policies in her budgeting and planning. Through initiatives such as vocational training, digital skills programs, and entrepreneurial support, young Nigerians are being equipped with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing economy. This is a marked departure from previous administrations, where youth empowerment policies were often poorly implemented or underfunded.

“Evidently, Senator Bagudu’s performance as Minister of Budget and Planning is underpinned by his great foresight. Amidst the noise and complaints surrounding critical economic reforms, such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the deregulation of the foreign exchange market, Senator Bagudu has remained steadfast in his support of these policies.

“He has demonstrated a deep understanding of their long-term benefits for Nigeria’s economy, recognizing that short-term pain is sometimes necessary for long-term gain. His advocacy for these policies has helped to shape public discourse and build support for the administration’s reform agenda.”

The CSO recommended areas for improvement, including enhancing public engagement, intensifying monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and expanding youth empowerment programs.

Opialu emphasised the importance of transparency, accountability, and inclusivity.

SAN seeks AGF’s intervention in human rights violation by Enugu monarch

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Chukwuemeka Ofodile has petitioned the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and the Minister of Police Affairs, requesting for an investigation into frivolous allegations, constant harassment, intimidation and flagrant violation of the rights of his clients who are prominent sons of Agunese Mmaku Autonomous Community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Ofodile demanded for a probe of the alleged roles played by the traditional ruler of Agunese community, His Royal Highness Igwe Cyprian Maduabuchi Nevobasi and security personnel, in the ordeal of his clients, namely Vincent Okafor Esq., Theophilus Chukwu, David Okeke, Chief Okeke Emmanuel Uwa, Chief Ochie Moses Cuka, Chief Okolie James Ikegwuonu and Chief Simeon Ogbonna Okike.

The senior lawyer equally asked for the investigation of the roles allegedly played by the security officers involved in the entire saga of arrests and incarceration of his clients, particularly the involvement of two officers of the Criminal Investigation Department (C.I.D) of the Enugu State Police Command, Blessing Oguche and one Nnamdi, to see whether due process was followed.

The petitioner urged the Minister of Justice and his Police Affairs counterpart to order the immediate release of his clients who are still being incarcerated at the Enugu Correctional Centre for bailable charges, most of which are baseless.

The petition dated September 19, 2024 was made available to reporters in Abuja.

The petition reads in part: “Note that sometime in 2022, HRH igwe Cyprian Novebasi maliciously attempted to mislead and weaponise government agencies by filing a baseless petition to the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security departments, falsely accusing 16 prominent men of Agunese community, including our clients whose names appear in this petition, of sponsoring the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) and the Eastern Security Network (ESN).

“This was a blatant attempt to silence these young and progressive individuals who opposed his oppressive rule and to force them into submission or exile. When his deceitful plot was exposed and rejected, he was compelled to retract the false allegations. However, since his initial scheme failed, HRH Igwe Cyprian Maduabuchi Nevobasi has now resorted to fabricating new charges, accusing these same men of inciting local conflict and violence, this time, leveraging corrupt police officers to arrest and intimidate them.

“His actions are clear abuse of his traditional office, as he continues to mislead authorities and manipulate the justice system to prosecute these individuals for standing against his tyranny. We urge the authorities to see through these repeated attempts to use false claims as a means of consolidating his power and oppressing his critics.”

The lawyer insisted that it was the calculated efforts of the monarch to strike mercilessly on gentlemen of goodwill in the community, by using the Nigeria Police Force and the DSS to haunt, harass, intimidate, arrest, and instigate baseless court charges to instill fear in them and other well-meaning members of the community.

He noted that since after the December 30, 2021 town union elections, which the monarch thwarted and cancelled over alleged security threat, members of the community speaking up against him and his perceived rivals have been framed, arrested and accused of all kinds of trumped up charges.

He maintained that his clients were being persecuted because they insisted that the town union should function freely and independently, while it works in concert with the traditional stool for the overall development of the community.

He stated that officers of the Nigeria Police Force arrested Mr. Theophilus Chukwu and he was arraigned on May 8, 2024, and then released on August 13, 2024, only for him to be re-arrested on the same day and re-arraigned for the second time on August 20, 2024.

According to him, Chukwu’s offense was aligning with those opposed to the sale of community land by the monarch, and his philanthropy and goodwill, having mobilised illustrious sons of the community to pool their meager resources together to assist their neglected community in carrying out some self-help projects, such as the renovation of dilapidated schools and maintenance of rural roads, which did not appear to have gone down well with the traditional ruler.

The petitioner stated that Vincent Okafor as a private legal practitioner had filed a fundamental rights action on behalf of Mr. Theophilus Chukwu at the Port Harcourt Federal High Court, and he was arrested and detained.

“The officers of the Nigeria Police Force arrested Barrister Vincent Okafor on September 6, 2024. When the charge was shown to Vincent Okafor, he expressed complete surprise, saying he was not even in the village. On the day in question, August 13, 2024, he was in faraway Lagos, making an appearance for a client in charges No. M/44/2024-C.O.P vs. Odinaka Orji.

“Mr. David Okeke was brought to the Enugu State Correctional Centre without arraignment or remand order. The day they took him to court, the business of the court was over. They took him to State C.I.D Enugu detention. The State C.I.D rejected him and they took him to Enugu Correctional Centre.”
