He’s right, netizens react to Dangote’s ‘no power, no prosperity’ statement

Nigerians on social media have taken turns to commend president of the Dangote Industries Limited, Aliko Dangote, following his “no power (electricity), no growth, no prosperity” comment.

Dangote, in an explosive speech at the Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (MAN) Summit in Abuja on Tuesday titled: ‘Rethinking manufacturing in Nigeria,’ stated among other issues that “Import dependence is equivalent to importing poverty and exporting jobs; no power, no growth, no prosperity; similarly, no affordable financing, no growth, no prosperity and there is no industrialization without protection.”

In reaction to what many Nigerians considered a bold statement from a giant investor and stakeholders, an X user with the username Udufirstson stated that “the foundation of development is built on electricity; no nation can progress without power. However, Nigerians prioritize tribalism over confronting evil.”

Nwandu said: “Baba put your money where your mouth is. Lobby for favorable energy policies, and invest in power infrastructure.”

Mustapha Salaha, like Nwandu, advised “that is the more reason why we need you within the power sector. we’re inviting you to please come and explore the opportunities within the power industry for growth and prosperity.”

Adekanbi Riliwan inputted that “power is a major key to sustainable development and economic growth in any nation.”

Donald encouraged more investors to speak up, stating that “Aliko how I wish you have been speaking up this way for a very long time. But it’s okay keep it up.”

Seyi Stevens declared that “If any govt in Nigeria can fix electricity to 100 per cent it has solved over 50 per cent of the economic problems, this is a clear fact.

“Nigerians are very hardworking people and ready to work in any system that has basic infrastructure.”

AITEO ends contracts with Amotoi Global Services, other security providers

Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company (AEEPCO) has terminated its security surveillance or contractual arrangements and agreements with a lawyer, Clement Amunaboye (trading under the name and style of Amotoi Global Services Ltd).

The oil firm also terminated any similar contract with three others: Obiene M Obiene (also known or referred to as “Organiser”), Thomas Livingstone and Christopher Ezekiel Enu.

In a statement on Monday, July 1, 2023, the operator of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC)/Aiteo Joint Venture on OML 29, said the termination was “with immediate effect.”

AEEPCO alerted the public and, in particular, “all regulatory and government authorities within the oil and gas industry, all law enforcement and security agencies, all relevant third parties associated or connected with matters relating to the security of its operating installations and infrastructure, howsoever connected or wheresoever located.”

It explained that the developments followed the “confirmation of the occurrence of various damaging nefarious activities that have compromised our operations, constituting grave safety violations, manifesting high fraud, injurious criminal activity, gross negligence and the unacceptable cumulative exposure of our assets and business, perpetrated by the within-named entities and individual security contractor and service providers.

“Accordingly, any/all relationships/transactions with them, whether jointly or severally, purportedly on our behalf, cease forthwith.

“Any further involvement with these entities or individuals ostensibly pertaining to our company is hereby disclaimed.”

Commenting on this development, AEEPCO’s Group Managing Director, Victor Okoronkwo, said: “For years, our company and its stakeholders have borne the worst impact of the consequences of crude theft, facilities vandalization, crude trafficking culminating not only in substantial financial losses but causing severe disruption to our operations.

“Despite the painful price we have had to pay, it is particularly galling to discover that we have been undermined by the entities or individuals who are supposed to secure our facilities and output.

“This speaks to the depth of the decay and the severity of the problem facing producers like us and calls for a heightened, urgent and comprehensive escalation and implementation of corrective measures.”

  • Anambra 2025: Why APC must zone governorship ticket to the south, by Pope Amaefuna

Anambra 2025: Why APC must zone governorship ticket to the south, by Pope Amaefuna

Political zoning has proven to be the catalyst for equity and the most critical stabilizing factor in Nigerian politics due to the peculiarities and dynamics of our heterogeneous political culture.

It has become almost impossible to divorce equity and fairness from zoning as they complement each other in the actualization of a peaceful and progressive society.

Contrary to the flawed idea that zoning is an APGA invention, it is imperative to clarify and highlight that fact that zoning is a natural law, a universal political principle and a fundamental egalitarian mandate for inclusivity, progressive politicking and equitable leadership.

Article 20(IV) (e) of the APC CONSTITUTION states that all considerations, rules, regulations and guidelines of our great party must reflect and uphold the principle of equitable rotation of political office and candidacy to reflect zonal spread, balance, fairness and equity.

In 2010, the eternal leader of Ndigbo, Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu in his insightful and foresighted perspicuity broached the idea of zoning in Anambra state when he highlighted the need to steer the state towards the path of equity by zoning power to Anambra North and this catalyzed the motivation for the then governor to mobilize towards ensuring that political moves are made to ensure that the northern zone of Anambra state succeeded him.

The politics of Anambra state has enjoyed relative stability, equity and fairness thanks to the adoption of the zoning principle as major political parties acknowledged the power rotation formula as reflected by the choice of candidates paraded in Anambra elections in the past decade.

In reality, no argument against power rotation and the relative peace it has brought to most states in Nigeria can stand against informed scrutiny as such argument is antithetical to the sagacity, inherent wisdom and political foresight which informed the drafters of the 1999 constitution and informed the enshrinement of the federal character which is a federal adaptation of the same principle of equitable inclusiveness in the constitution of our homogenous society.

In our post military political history, the introduction of equity in the governance of Anambra has proven to be the most stabilizing legacy bequeathed on our dear state by our democratic leadership.

It is therefore a very worrying development for any school of thought, individual, group or political party in Anambra state to openly canvass or suggest for the discontinuation, interruption or truncation of the zoning arrangement which has ensured inclusiveness, fairness, equity, peace and progress in Anambra state. Such aspirations to thwart a working model can never be in the best interest of Anambra state but rather a stark manifestation of dubious, questionable and personal political/economic interests.

In reality, APC can no longer afford to continue playing opposition politics in Anambra state and all hands must be on deck to ensure a power shift in the 2025 governorship election.

Considering the disposition of the Anambra electorate, if the APC makes the mistake of failing to field a strong and popular candidate from Anambra south in favour of parading a candidate from any other zone, then it is safe to kiss the governorship aspirations of the party goodbye as the move would truncate the remaining four years tenure of Anambra south.

The implication is that a new candidate from any other zone might tentatively lay claims to an eight year tenure instead of four and that is the last thing any right thinking anambarian wants at this epoch.

It is not rocket science neither is it difficult to understand that politicking against the established political culture of ndi Anambra is tantamount to political suicide as such a move will further alienate our great party from an already disgruntled electorate that has been negatively conditioned by the “nkea bu nke fa” ideology for almost two decades.

It is also fallacious, erroneous and outlandish to claim that zoning produces mediocrity, as some political jobbers with ulterior motives lamely but vehemently contend.

For proper perspective, Lucky Igbenedion, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, James Ibori, James Bala Ngilari and Joshua Dariye have either been tried or convicted of mismanagement of public funds and abuse of office and none of them was a product of zoning in their various states.

The fact remains that there is an incredible abundance of political talent and world class leadership materials in every single LGA in Anambra state. There is no dearth of qualified individuals and party men in Anambra south with natural ability, professionalism, experience, clout and capacity to effectively run our beloved state.

Very importantly, the proponents and advocates of No zoning should be wary of what they preach as they risk swallowing their own vomit when the advocacy for IGBO PRESIDENCY arises considering the fact that an Igbo presidency without zoning would be akin to the fabled camel trying to navigate through the needle’s eye.

These crusaders of NO ZONING in Anambra state must not discountenance the fact that the world is watching and the possibility that what they promote today might come back someday to strike a debilitating blow on their personal integrity, political fecundity and sincerity of purpose as supporting zoning at the federal level and then assuming a volte-face at the state level is ideological hypocrisy.

Considering the political culture of Anambra state today, any party that did not abide by the zoning formula adopted by stakeholders in rotation of the governorship seat of the state stands no chance of winning the forthcoming guber poll and historical indices support this position.

The Anambra state APC can only win the 2025 Anambra state governorship election if we can come together and unite to support a strong candidate from Anambra south who has the capacity, structures and personal grassroots’ following to match APGA at the polls.

The card carrying saboteurs in APC who have preoccupied and positioned themselves on the negotiation table with APGA with the goal to sabotage the party in exchange for a few wads of dollar bills should be identified by the national working committee of APC and punished accordingly.

Any APC member who is currently crusading for no zoning has been compromised and commissioned to work against the party and such a character (with their executive sponsors) should be considered enemies of the party who are actively working against the party interests.

APC cannot continue to betray its own candidates. It is time to come together, cage the white elephant in the room and make a strong statement in 2025.

Pope Amaefuna, An APC Stalwart writes from Oraukwu.

  • CG Adeniyi: Impactful PR in Customs Management

CG Adeniyi: Impactful PR in Customs Management

    • By Yushau A. Shuaib

On June 13, 2024, an email from Janice Hills of the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) announced a campaign, “100 Days of Impactful PR at Customs Service”, as a finalist for the 2024 Golden World Award (GWA) in Public Relations. It will now proceed to the second round, where more materials, including documents, relevant web links, images, and videos will be submitted to enable the jury to decide on the winning entries.

The campaign, a testament to the strategic leadership of the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, was previously honoured with a Certificate of Excellence at the 2024 Africa SABRE Awards, a prestigious recognition at the annual conference of the African Public Relations Association (APRA) in Cote d’Ivoire.

The campaign chronicled Adeniyi’s innovative approach and the deployment of public relations tactics – during the first 100 days at the helm – as he engaged Nigerians and several stakeholders on the new Customs Act and the Reform Agenda within the sector. The CG assumed office on June 19, 2023.

A week before handing over to President Bola Tinubu, former President Muhammadu Buhari signed the Nigeria Customs Act, amending it for the first time in over 64 years. This presented Adeniyi the opportunity to raise awareness about the transformative import, value, expenditure, and accountability changes promised by the new Act and the stricter penalties and sanctions for Excise duty violations.

The Act specifies that appointment of the Comptroller General would no longer be open to non-career individuals, as it empowers the President to appoint a CGC from career-serving officers, provided they hold a rank not lower than that of an Assistant Comptroller General (ACG).

As a distinguished Fellow and ex-Vice President of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Adeniyi played a pivotal role in fostering stakeholder collaboration. His efforts were instrumental in aligning the NCS’s core responsibilities with President Tinubu’s priorities in trade facilitation, revenue collection, societal protection, and cooperation. This demonstrates the NCS’s unwavering commitment to national goals.

Within three months in acting capacity, Adeniyi intensified awareness campaigns through capacity-building programmes, stakeholder engagements, and media interactions. One of the major challenges he faced was managing the trade embargo between ECOWAS member states and Niger Republic after the coup. Amid public outcry over border closures which affected businesses and towns, Adeniyi’s crisis communication involved consultations with community leaders, youth groups, etc, towards providing relief and legitimate options.

His leadership and managerial skills ensured border security, influenced the citizenry’s compliance with customs reforms, boosted revenue generation and instilled a sense of optimism and hope for the future. It also considerably contributed to the productivity of his management team. Impressed by the unparalleled feat and strategy deployed, President Tinubu confirmed Adeniyi’s appointment as substantive Comptroller General from October 19, 2023.

Interestingly, Kabir Abdulsalam of PRNigeria and Maryam Na’Allah of Spokespersons Digest, both staff writers at Image Merchants Promotion Limited, studied and documented Adeniyi’s public relations strategies in their forthcoming book titled “Impactful PR in Customs Management.” With a blurb by Vice President Kashim Shettima and a foreword written by Dr. Ike Neliaku (NIPR President), the book highlights well-coordinated PR approaches in leadership and management.

Key aspects covered in the literature include how press coverage and media engagement created required awareness and sensitisation of customs reforms. Similarly, the effect of regular engagement with stakeholders in facilitating interagency cooperation and earning public support is also highlighted. Organised special events through lively interactions and fruitful deliberations have been valuable in promoting the new legislation and other service endeavours.

The book emphasises more strategies for engagement and communication during crises and recognises the effectiveness of third-party narratives. It focuses on primary PR tools in its twelve chapters – event management, crisis communication, stakeholder engagement, press release writing, social media, lobbying decision-makers, corporate social responsibility, reputation management, in-house publications, employee relations, and media monitoring.

While the book will be unveiled at the annual Economic Confidential Summit in Abuja in July, the accomplishment of the Customs Service under Tinubu’s administration is quite obvious. Due to Adeniyi’s trade facilitation measures, including 24-hour port decongestion/clearance and removal of multiple checkpoints with dedicated import and export terminals, the NCS has achieved an unprecedented revenue collection of 75%, compared to the previous year.

Adeniyi, a humble and detribalised Nigerian, has demonstrated inspirational leadership that motivates staff across all levels and backgrounds to strive for excellence and make sacrifices. His selfless attitude has created a culture of unity and dedication, inspiring others to work towards a common goal of serving the national interest.

Additionally, the Comptroller General’s anti-smuggling efforts, through strengthened partnerships, have led to massive seizures of wildlife products, deadly weapons, and hard drugs, among other contrabands that are injurious to the country’s economy and life of the people.

Adeniyi’s communication approach and proactive policies have influenced public perception and showcased the tangible benefits of effective PR strategies. The Customs chief’s visionary management has not only transformed the NCS, but also restored trust and elevated its reputation. His PR management indeed has the potential to inspire future leaders to harness the power of strategic communication, leaving a lasting legacy in the industry.

Human rights group calls for neutrality of Police in Rivers, security interventions

A coalition of local human rights groups in Nigeria, the Human Rights Advocacy Crusaders (HRAC) has urged the Police and other security agents in Rivers State to maintain neutrality and impartiality in the ongoing local government crisis.

In a statement by Pastor Jerry King Nicholas, the group said taking sides could lead to further violence and clashes between supporters of different parties, resulting in deaths and destruction of property.

After the expiration of the tenure of LG chairmen, vice and councillors, Governor Siminalayi Fubara ordered heads of administration in the 23 local government areas to take over.

He subsequently swore in caretaker chairpersons in accordance with the law. However, some LG chairmen have insisted on holding on to their offices.

According to Nicholas, the expiration of the tenure of local government chairmen and other officials is a constitutional matter, hence security agents should not allow “power grabbers” to have their way.

“The law is clear: the 1999 Constitution and Section 9(1) of the Rivers State Local Government Law No 5 of 2018 provide for a 3-year tenure for local government chairmen, with a possibility of a second term,” he said.

“We inform the security agents that the law No 2 of 2024, which attempted to extend the tenure of the outgoing chairmen by six months has been expunged from the laws of Rivers State by Justice D.G. Kio of the state High Court.

“This means that the outgoing chairmen cannot rely on a non-existent law to continue in office,” he stated.

The Human Rights Advocacy Crusaders urged the security agents to prevent violence and maintain peace while allowing the democratic process to unfold, and ensuring that the rule of law is upheld

“We also urge the former chairmen and others who are still eligible to seek re-election into the councils whenever elections are scheduled by the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission, rather than resorting to violence,” Nicholas added.

“We refer to the judgment of the Supreme Court in the case of the Attorney General of the Federation versus the Attorney General of Abia State (2021), which ruled on the tenure of council chairmen in the state, and applies to all states of the federation.

“We reiterate that security agents must remain neutral and not take sides with any party. They must also prevent violence and maintain peace in Rivers State while allowing the democratic process to unfold, and ensuring that the rule of law is upheld.”

    • Jubilation as Soludo’s wife offers free health insurance worth N12.5m to PWDs in Anambra

Jubilation as Soludo’s wife offers free health insurance worth N12.5m to PWDs in Anambra

Jubilation erupted on Wednesday, June 13, at the Governor’s Lodge in Anambra State as the governor’s wife, Nonye Soludo, enrolled 1,000 Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) into the state’s Health Insurance scheme.

During a town hall meeting organized to promote her Healthy Living Initiative, Soludo announced that the package, valued at N12,500 each, aims to ensure equal representation and opportunities for all.

She emphasized that with adequate attention, PWDs can contribute unique values to the journey towards a livable and prosperous Anambra State.

She urged the beneficiaries to use the health premium fully to their advantage, just as she advised them to prioritise their health, eat right, and imbibe personal and environmental hygiene to stay healthy and alive.

She said: “I invited you because I love you all and look out for you. My husband’s administration also appreciates your undying desire to bring your best to the table of good governance.

“As I behold your amazing faces, I see strength, tenacity, doggedness, and unbeatable ambitions. This is why Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative, is giving out 1000 health insurance slots free to PWDs in the state.

“This is our own way of saying that we care about you and we know that health is the greatest wealth. This free health insurance will be your passport to access the best medicare anywhere in the state.

‘I want you to ensure that you use the health insurance fully to your advantage. When you notice any sign of infirmity, do not waste time visiting your doctor,” she said.

Chairman of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities in Anambra, Mr Ugochukwu Okeke requested the inclusion of PWDs in the Healthy Living campaign.

He regretted that PWDs were more affected by issues of healthy living as a result of different challenges hinging on their various nature of disabilities.

“Including PWDs in your campaign will help get the awareness and support down to our members, thereby enabling an inclusive society,” he said.

Also speaking, the Director of Centre for Disability and Special Needs Research, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Prof. Williams Obiozor advocated for more support and inclusion of persons with disabilities in society.

He said empowering and catering to the well-being of PWDs was a collective effort and should not be left to the government alone.

Earlier, Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo appreciated the Governor’s wife for the demonstration of love for persons with disabilities in the state.

On his part, Executive Secretary of Anambra State Health Insurance Agency, Simeon Onyemaechi, said the package cost N12,500 annually to get medicines and treatments for health conditions covered by the scheme.

NDLEA laments women’s involvement in illicit drug

…as Soludo launches “Clean Anambra of substance abuse”

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Anambra state has expressed worry over the growing number of women involved in drug abuse, saying one out of every four users of illicit drugs is a woman.

State Commandant, Dan Onyishi stated this on Thursday in Awka during the launch of Operation Clean Anambra of Substance Abuse by Healthy Living With Nonye Soludo.

Delivering a seminar on “Role of Opinion Leaders in Fight against Drug/Substance Abuse in Our Communities”, Onyishi regretted that Nigeria has a 14.4 percent drug abuse prevalence rate, with a 40 percent projection by 2030.

He said: “According to recent statistics, Nigeria alone has 14.4 percent drug abuse prevalence rate and it was projected that by 2030 it will rise to 40 percent if nothing is done.

“The major concern is that women, especially young girls are embracing substance abuse. One out of every four drug abusers is women and one out of five will suffer substance abuse disorder.

“As key nurturers, moulders and caregivers in the society, women should not be involved in illicit drug abuse. As an agency, we are taking the sensitisation and enforcement into the communities because the grassroots campaign is one sure way to address the menace of drug abuse.

“We’ll also collaborate with the governor’s wife who is Chairperson of the State Drug Control Committee in the state so that the 40% projections would not come to pass in the state.”

Wife of the State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo lamented that substance abuse had become a pandemic in the society and required collective effort to tackle.

She blamed the high rate of crimes, violence, and health complications especially among youths to the menace, urging parents to be closer to their children to monitor their activities, listen, and counsel them daily.

She said: “Watching our young, vibrant population held back and fighting for freedom from this avoidable danger brought tears to my eyes. That visit is one of the reasons we are here today

“Most disheartening is the fact that these dangerous substances have found their way into schools and into the hands of children.

“The illicit drug economies are booming to the detriment of our society. The proliferation of synthetic psychoactive substances is another issue of crunch concern.

“Our homes are losing the sacredness of culture and moral traditions. Our communities have become havens for drug peddlers and manufacturers who use the element of fear and intimidation to silence the people who are willing to assist local authorities with valid information.

“Unemployment, deprivations, and social crisis have also played their part in heightening the danger. It is now time to take the bull by the horns and approach the problem with the seriousness that it deserves.

Earlier, Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike said that the campaign would save the youths from degenerating into a generational tragedy with drug addiction.

President-General of Anambra State Association of Town Union, Titus Akpudo promised to take the message against substance abuse to the nooks and crannies of the state.
