‘Why Akwa Ibom is developing fast’

The Chief Press Secretary to Akwa Ibom State Governor, Mr. Ekerete Udoh, has attributed the accelerated development in the state to good leadership over the years.

Udoh, receiving the new executives of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, on a visit to him, said the state is blessed with good governors.

He lauded the strides of successive governors in key areas of road development, aviation, electricity, education, health, industrialsation and agriculture.

“I can say that the state has been quite lucky with the quality of governors it has produced since the return of democracy. Right from Obong Victor Attah through Senator Godswill Akpabio and Mr. Udom Emmanuel and now Pastor Umo Eno, the state has been blessed with quality leaders, who have translated their quality into infrastructural renaissance we are seeing in Akwa Ibom today.

“Not only have they touched all key areas of health, education, agriculture, industry and infrastructure, they have also focused on areas that were of importance to the state at their own time such that Akwa Ibom has become a reference point when you are talking about development within the sub nationals in Nigeria.

“For instance, if you know how Uyo, the state capital, was in the 80s, a glorified rural area with thatched and mud houses in some major streets, with just one modest guest house in those days and compare that with the now modern city filled with quality neighbourhoods and wide boulevards, then you begin to appreciate the impact of successive governors of the state,” Udoh said.

The new chapel Chairman, Mr. Anthony Bassey, advocated development partnership between the state government and correspondents.

Bassey, who also called for increased editorial relationship between the office of the CPS and the chapel, said such would not, however, jeopardise quality and factuality of reports from the correspondents about the activities and actions of the state government and its officials.

Also present at the meeting were the SSA to the Governor on Media, Mr. Aniette Usen; Vice Chairman of the chapel, Comrade Isaiah Eka; Comrade Udeme Utip (Secretary); Comrade Lovina Emole (Assistant Secretary); Comrade Iniobong Ekponta (Treasurer) and Comrade Emeka Samuel (Financial

    Secretary).

At the centre of the disagreement are Commissioner for Economic Development Emem Bob and the Chairman of Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state, Mr Iniobong Robson.

The duo have been summoned by the House of Assembly to explain the modalities they adopted in arriving at the 1, 072 nominees for the Federal Government’s grant.

They are expected to brief the lawmakers on the modalities employed in arriving at the 1, 072 nominees for the Federal Government’s conditional grant for businesses, being part of Federal Government’s scheme to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal.

The duo are expected to appear before a Special Ad-hoc Committee of the House today.

Recall that the Federal Government had disbursed N50 billion to 774 local governments in the country as part of its programmes aimed at alleviating the effects of fuel subsidy removal.

Stop bush burning, NOA warns Bayelsa residents

The National Orientation Agency (NOA) has called on Bayelsa State residents to stop bush burning, to avert its dangerous and deadly effects on the environment, human health and communities.

Bayelsa State Director, NOA, Mr. Ellis Nria Dappa, made the call yesterday when a non-governmental organisation, the Women Organised for Mentorship and Advocacy Network (WOMAN), visited him in his office at the Federal Secretariat, Yenagoa.

He said the call was in line with the agency’s efforts to address major environmental issues in Nigeria, especially in Bayelsa, to sustain national values through collaboration with civil society organisations.

He said the collaboration between the NOA and organisations such as WOMAN underscored the importance of joint efforts in promoting environmental sustainability and upholding national values.

“The call to stop bush burning in Bayelsa aligns with our broader commitment to environmental advocacy and collaboration with relevant stakeholders,” Dappa said.

He, therefore, sought the support of NGOs to mobilise communities, raise awareness and implement sustainable strategies to prevent and manage bushfire burning in Bayelsa.

The President of WOMAN, Lady Eunice Nnachi, lauded the NOA’s advocacy, sensitisation and awareness creation initiatives, which she said focused on the value of wetlands and the need to prevent destructive practices such as bushfires and burning of tyres.

Nnachi noted that smoke inhalation from bushfires could result in respiratory problems, cardiovascular issues and other health complications.

She, therefore, called on residents to seek another means of clearing their bushes instead of bushfires, saying they could lead to air and water pollution, respiratory issues and poor water quality.

PISE-P to partner Google, Amazon, Microsoft for South East development

The Peace in the South East Project  (PISE-P) initiated by the deputy speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu is to partner with Google, Amazon, and Microsoft for the development of the southeast region and the nation as a whole.

PISE-P is an initiative that canvasses a non-kinetic approach toward resolving the security challenges in the southeast region.

Receiving a delegation from Neuo Mobile Communication and Technology Limited, Kalu said technology is a major catalyst for youth employment in the 21st century.

The deputy speaker commended the delegation for their innovation and commitment to making a difference in the ever-evolving world of technology, while giving a nod to the partnership proposal with Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, noting that it’s for the benefit of Southeast indigenes and other creative minds.

He said: “I see greatness in this mustard seed, I see great opportunities out there. I have seen your passion to make a difference, and your understanding of the time that we are in, the time of digitalization.

“You have not only earned the trust and recognition of being registered and licensed by the relevant regulatory government agencies, which is the first step to make sure that you are involved with the type of technology that is not going to be anti-government

“It means you’re compliant towards the goals and aspirations of the current administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. You came with both the software and the hardware which are the two sides of information, and communication technology.

“We are accepting the partnership for Google, and Amazon to partner with Peace in the South East project. We know what that’s going to do for our people, both in south East and other parts of Nigeria. It’s about time we prove to our people that we are better than the hands we use in holding guns, the same hands can build innovative solutions to our problems.

“It’s about time that we prove that those boys can create solutions that we all will celebrate. All they have been asking for is a listening ear. The Peace in the South East Project has made itself available to be the listening ear. We will be their mouthpiece showcasing their needs. Technology will be one of the routes to achieving that, with your visit, I believe this is an audacious, auspicious moment to explore potential collaborations and partnerships. I’m sure with that we will further our shared goals. Thanks for your creativity, I promise that this office will support creative minds like you.

“Your example of making innovative technology affordable and accessible aligns perfectly with our shared vision for a digitally inclusive society. In the business of manufacturing and selling mobile phones, tablets, desktops, and laptops under the brand name “NEUO,” your company would be providing opportunities for employment and gainful engagement for the youth.

“Furthermore, your dedication to developing applications and software tailored to suit the unique requirements of your clients showcases your commitment to meeting Nigerians’ contemporary technology needs.”

Executive Director of Business and Development of the company, Joseph Asuquo told the Deputy Speaker that the purpose of the visit was to introduce the company and congratulate him on his emergence as the Deputy Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives.

Ubah to Soludo: you’re scared of me

    • APC governorship aspirant pledges one term

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain and the senator representing Anambra South, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah, says Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo is attacking him because he’s scared of him.

He told reporters yesterday in Nnewi that Soludo had not rested since he declared his interest to contest 2025 governorship election.

He vowed to spend one term of four years if elected as governor, advising Prof. Soludo to give the citizens good governance, which he promised them, instead of being afraid of his shadows.

The reason for one term, Ubah explained, was to complete the turn of Anambra South Senatorial District in the spirit of the gentleman’s agreement guiding the zoning and rotation of the governorship position of the state since 2014.

Soludo is also from Anambra South and he is spending second year of his first tenure in office.

Ubah said he would not only do one term of four years, he would also conduct local government elections within four months if given the opportunity to serve ndi Anambra.

He said four years were enough for any focused governor to do great things and change the lives of his people positively.

Describing the development in the state as very slow, Ubah said 80 per cent of his blueprint or idea for the development of the state were innovative and beyond the capacity of his opponents.

He said if voted as governor, Anambra State would be the commercial and health hub in the Southeast and Nigeria in general.

He expressed disappointment about the way Governor Soludo disrespected the traditional institution.

He said the governor’s action was petty and unfortunate, adding that he would do much better in the classroom than in governance.

“Everybody has his or her calling. Some are in classroom, others in business and vice versa. The governor is not good in what he is doing now. We have to tell ourselves the truth.

“My plans for the development of Anambra State are huge. As a private person and politician, I have done great in the transformation of the lives of many people.

“I have equally done it in sports, education, commerce, employment and in overall youth and women empowerment. I have the capacity to make the people of my state happy again and I am ready too,” Ubah said.

  • Delta to engage local contractors in projects

Delta to engage local contractors in projects

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has assured local contractors of his administration’s commitment to engaging them in project execution across the state.

He, however, said the quality of work done by local contractors would determine the level of patronage from the government.

Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Mr. Reuben Izeze, said yesterday after inspecting ongoing construction work on Orere bridge that the bridge, upon completion, would link up 30 communities in Ughelli South Local Government to other parts of the state.

He hailed the contracting firm for the job done so far and said Governor Oborevwori’s administration would patronise contractors with proven competence and capacity to deliver good projects.

He said: “I am very pleased with this project, the famous Orere bridge, because it’s something I advocated over the years.

“Let me state unequivocally that I am impressed with what I am seeing on ground, considering that the contracting firm, Obakpor Engineering, before now had been one of those companies that had been accused of cutting corners, not having the professionalism to deliver on projects.

“But here we are standing across the project that is being handled by Obakpor Engineering and you will think you are standing on Trans-Warri Ode-Itsekiri bridge that is being handled by a foreign firm.

“What he has done so far is that he is bridging the gap between our indigenous contractors and their foreign counterparts.’’

“One of the cardinal legs upon which the MORE Agenda of Governor Oborevwori stands is ‘Opportunities for all’ and it means everybody will have the opportunity to prove themselves.

“The quality of your work will determine how much patronage you will receive from the government. I can say categorically that Obakpor Engineering has improved tremendously in terms of manpower and equipment.

“The contractor has said he will be out of site completely within the next nine months and this goes to show that Obakpor Engineering has come of age and they will continue to improve as we move forward. It is a fantastic job, but like I will always say, there is room for improvement.”

On the length of the bridge before the river, Izeze said the bridge was designed to ensure high flood waters did not impede usage of the bridge when there was flood around the corridor.

“If you understand this terrain, the over 30 communities that make up the Ewu Kingdom in Ughelli South are entirely an Island and they don’t need much rains before the flood starts.

“To get the proper sloping, the bridge is designed such that there is enough distance before the river so that by the time flooding starts, it will not disturb the usage of this bridge,” Izeze said.

State Director of Highways, Mrs. Juliet Aboloje, said Orere bridge is 500m cutting across 25 spans of 20metres each with access road of 4.3km and 1.36km arterial roads.

The contractor, Mr. John Oguma, said the project was delayed by yearly flooding, causing a loss of four months of active work annually.

Land dispute: Uwazuruike vacates house for cleric

Leader of Movement for Actualisation of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, has said he has vacated his property in Imo State, which has been a subject of dispute between him and Owerri Catholic Archdiocesan Bishop, Lucious Ugorji.

Uwazuruike said he acquired the land in 2012, but was surprised that after many years, the archbishop surfaced to lay claim to the property.

Archbishop Ugorji, however, claimed that the land belonged to the church before Uwazuruike built his house on it.

Uwazuruike, in a statement yesterday by his media adviser, Chris Mocha, said he withdrew the case from the Court of Appeal and directed his security men to vacate the land for the sake of peace.

“From the bottom of my heart and for peace to prevail in the Southeast and Imo State in particular, take the land, you have won me,” Uwazuruike said.

He, however, alleged that eight of his men arrested on the day officials of Owerri Capital Development Authority (OCDA) came to demolish his house were yet to be released and called for their immediate release.

“The members are being detained at an undisclosed police station in Owerri,” Uwazuruike alleged.

  • Allegations against NNPCL boss dismissed

    Allegations against NNPCL boss dismissed

A group under the aegis of Niger Delta Women for Change (NDWC) has dismissed allegations of oil pipeline surveillance contracts racketeering by the Executive Vice President (Upstream) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Mrs. Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan.

Describing the accusations as “baseless,” NDWC President, Esiri Ikomoni, speaking at a news conference in Warri, Delta State, rejected calls for her removal over the development.

Flanked by Oritsemisan Juliet and Sophia Tamaralayefa, the group’s secretary and public relations officer, she said the allegations against Mrs. Eyesan did not align with her track record of professionalism and ethical conduct, adding that “NNPCL remains committed to fostering an environment of transparency and accountability.

“NNPCL adheres to a strict and transparent procurement process, ensuring that contracts are awarded based on merit, competitiveness and compliance with all relevant regulations.

“Mrs. Eyesan has consistently demonstrated her commitment to ethical practices, promoting a level- playing field for all stakeholders involved in the procurement process.”

Urging the public and the media to exercise caution in spreading unverified information and to await the outcome of official investigations into the allegations, she expressed confidence that truth would prevail.

“In the face of baseless and malicious attacks, Mrs. Eyesan, the esteemed Executive Vice President (EVP) of Nigerian Petroleum Company Ltd (NNPCL), stands resilient, determined to reframe the narrative surrounding her dedicated service and outstanding achievements.

“As a key strategist of one of Africa’s biggest companies, she led teams that developed corporate strategy, influenced government policies, regulations, laws, while orchestrating commercial agreements (including infrastructure development for local and multinational projects),” Ikomoni said.

She said the recent attempts to undermine EVP’s contributions have been identified as not only malicious, but also fuelled by tribalistic blackmail.

“In response to these attacks, the EVP remains steadfast in her dedication to the principles of professionalism and inclusivity. Her commitment to advancing the energy industry, irrespective of tribal affiliations, stands as a testament to her vision for a unified and prosperous Nigeria,” the group’s president added.

  • The unending Obaseki, Shaibu feud

    The unending Obaseki, Shaibu feud

Until June 19, 2020, Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, and his deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu, were prominent figures in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo. However, ahead of the September 19, 2020 governorship election, they defected to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Despite the disagreement with his former APC ally, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, the then National Chairman of APC, Obaseki insisted on retaining Shaibu as his running mate on the PDP platform, securing re-election.

While Obaseki sought re-election under the PDP banner, he desired control over the party’s structures, ranging from the ward to the state levels, a request met with resistance from Chief Dan Orbih, the PDP National Vice Chairman, Southsouth, and the immediate past Edo Chairman of PDP. As Obaseki’s second term, set to conclude on November 12, 2024, approached, Shaibu, from Edo North senatorial district, expressed interest in succeeding his boss. However, Obaseki, supporting Lagos-based lawyer Asue Ighodalo, from Edo Central senatorial district, cited the need for equity, justice, and fairness, especially since the immediate past governor, Oshiomhole, hails from Edo North senatorial district.

Shaibu’s gubernatorial aspirations triggered attempts by the 24-member Edo House of Assembly to remove/impeach him. In response, Shaibu filed a suit against the plot at the Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja. Following the intervention of prominent Nigerians and, subsequently, Shaibu’s withdrawal of the suit, Obaseki was left perturbed by his deputy’s actions, leading to a strained relationship between them.

Following their discord, Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki relocated his deputy, Comrade Philip Shaibu, from his office in Government House to a less prestigious building within the Government Reservation Area (GRA) in Benin, the state capital. The tension between Obaseki and Shaibu escalated recently over the renovation of the Edo Interdenominational Government House Chapel in Benin. Obaseki, through his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Religious Matters, Rev. Osagie Ehrunmwunse, who also serves as the Pastor-in-Charge of the chapel, accused his deputy of attempting to exploit sacred entities, such as religion, to stir political sentiments among Nigerians and the people of Edo. He said: “In the last couple of days, we have seen posts on social media and various media outfits, suggesting that the State Government has shut down the chapel, and prevented people from using it as a place of worship.

In response to the recent discord, Edo Governor Godwin Obaseki accused his deputy, Philip Shaibu, of orchestrating a false narrative and attempting to stir religious animosity to embarrass the government. Obaseki asserted that Shaibu was behind the dissemination of a video with false commentary, and he highlighted the deputy governor’s involvement in an outdoor mass with Catholic faithful, suggesting a connection to the circulated video.

Obaseki emphasised that Shaibu was present at the 57th Executive Council (EXCO) Meeting held on November 1, 2023, where approval was granted for the renovation and remodeling of the Government House Interdenominational Chapel. The governor pointed out that Shaibu served as Vice Chairman of the Council during that meeting. The renovation project is managed by the Edo State Public Building and Maintenance Agency, and the approved contract sum was N300,161,278.17.

The governor accused Shaibu of being aware of the government’s action to renovate the chapel but choosing to create religious animosity in the state. Obaseki urged Shaibu to redirect his efforts toward his political aspirations rather than using sacred matters as fodder for his campaign. However, an ally of Shaibu countered Obaseki’s statements, accusing the governor of being economical with the truth regarding the avoidable face-off over the chapel’s renovation.

The response from the deputy governor’s associate characterizes Obaseki’s statement as an afterthought, claiming that the government is taking drastic steps by dismounting a chapel that has been in existence for over two decades for political reasons. The ally questioned the authenticity of the unsigned extract purportedly from the Executive Council, pointing out conflicting statements from Obaseki’s aides regarding the chapel’s status. They argued that the approved renovation cost of N300,161,278.17 seemed excessive for a chapel renovation with less than ten months left in the government’s tenure.

Accusations were made about a verbal notice given to the chapel’s Catechist to vacate immediately, suggesting a declaration of war on the church, particularly the Catholic faith to which Shaibu belongs. The deputy governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ebomhiana Musa, declined to respond. In a separate incident, a Sienna vehicle belonging to Philip Shaibu Governorship Campaign Organisation was reportedly attacked in Ekpoma, Edo Central senatorial district. The coordinator of the organization in Esan West Local Government Area, Otoide Abas, faced the attack after concluding a meeting with PDP’s Ward 10 (Illeh) members. Hoodlums allegedly emerged from a white Hummer bus labeled ‘Ameosa Motors,’ vandalising the vehicle and firing multiple shots. This same bus was said to have been involved in a previous incident where thugs accompanied a PDP governorship aspirant to Uchi Day celebration in Auchi, Edo North senatorial district.

Shaibu has faced multiple challenges in his campaign, including the vandalism of billboards in Edo. Despite these obstacles, he remains committed to his mission of reclaiming the state from individuals prioritising personal gains over the welfare of the people. The ally of Edo Deputy Governor expressed concern over recent events, calling on security agencies to compel the Obaseki administration to rein in its agents and ensure the safety of all participants in the election. They emphasized the need for a peaceful democratic process and called for those responsible for the attacks to face the full force of the law. The ally urged supporters to remain calm, shun violence, and continue embracing peace.

Edo Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu, disclosed his deep hurt over Governor Obaseki’s support for Asue Ighodalo, an outsider, instead of him. Shaibu accused Obaseki of betrayal, withholding allocations to his office for over six months, and playing the role of a political godfather despite their joint commitment to fight against god-fatherism in Edo politics. He clarified that he is not fighting Obaseki but asserted that Obaseki declared a full-scale war against him for seeking the PDP governorship ticket.

Shaibu expressed optimism about emerging as the PDP standard bearer despite the challenges, citing divine guidance and widespread support. He emphasized that his ambition is rooted in a divine conviction to serve Edo State and take governance back to the people. Shaibu acknowledged financial support from various sources, attributing it to God’s intervention, and affirmed his commitment to becoming the next governor of Edo State. Edo Deputy Governor, Shaibu, expressed optimism about his chances of securing the PDP’s governorship ticket in the primary election on February 22, 2023, and winning the subsequent election. He emphasized his street credibility, capacity, and commitment to being the next governor of Edo State, believing that it is his turn to lead.

Shaibu reaffirmed his loyalty to Governor Obaseki despite ongoing challenges, including the withholding of allocations to his office for the last six months. He acknowledged his sacrifices and role in delivering flagship projects in the state. Shaibu urged PDP leaders to avoid divisive politics and intimidation, advocating for unity within the party. Speaking at a yuletide party hosted by Chief Dan Orbih, the leader of PDP’s Legacy Coalition in Edo, Shaibu commended Orbih’s leadership qualities and urged fellow governorship aspirants to prioritize peace and unity for the party’s success in the upcoming elections. Orbih emphasized the need for issue-based campaigns and called for sacrifice to ensure the party’s continued presence in Osadebey Avenue beyond November 12, 2024. The event was attended by other PDP governorship aspirants, including Anselm Ojezua and Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama.

On December 1, 2023, Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu celebrated his 54th birthday, and Governor Godwin Obaseki extended warm wishes, thanking him for his support in developing Edo State over the past seven years. Obaseki acknowledged Shaibu’s contributions to the administration’s transformative efforts and commended him for being an exemplary husband, father, and family man. Shaibu expressed gratitude for Obaseki’s thoughtful wishes, emphasizing his unwavering commitment to their shared mandate of prioritizing Edo State’s interests.

In response to some internal political tensions, Shaibu declared his intention to run for the governorship of Edo State in the 2024 elections on the platform of the PDP. The declaration event had to be moved to another venue due to scheduling conflicts with allies of Governor Obaseki. Despite challenges and divisions, Shaibu expressed confidence in his candidacy and outlined five core pillars that would be the foundation of his campaign for the development and prosperity of Edo State. The PDP’s candidate for the elections would eventually be determined through a competitive process involving Obaseki-backed Asue Ighodalo, Shaibu, and other aspirants within the party. The political landscape within PDP was described as a “house of commotion.”

Shaibu, said at his declaration: “Back in the day, you did not just call me ‘Mr. Constituency Project,’ for nothing. In my time as a legislator, I delivered 49 constituency projects at the state level, and 13 solid constituency projects within my short stint at the federal level. I have fought the good fight for you, my people. Along the way, I suffered humiliations, and enjoyed many moments of victory, but I am thankful in all things.

“I have been pressed, but not crushed, persecuted but not abandoned, badly hurt but not destroyed. I resonate with the tireless and irrepressible spirit of the Edo People. By the grace of God, nothing and no one can stop us. After all, I be original Edo son, 100 per cent home boy. This is why today, I stand before you with great conviction and resolve, as I declare my intention to run for the office of the Governor of Edo State, on the platform of the PDP, in the upcoming 2024 election, and I am confident that with your support, we can take Edo State to even greater heights.”
