Uzodimma’s inauguration a celebration of people, says govt

Imo State Government yesterday said next Monday’s inauguration of Governor Hope Uzodimma for a second tenure is a celebration of the people.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy and Chairman of the Publicity Sub Committee for the Inauguration, Declan Emelumba, made this known yesterday at a news conference in Owerri.

He said: “Although dignitaries from across the globe are billed to attend the inauguration, the event is actually about celebrating Imo people, who have shown so much love and support for Governor Uzodimma and his government.”

He said more than 100-member committee set up by the governor for the inauguration was working to achieve success.

  • Knocks, kudos for Soludo on crisis trailing conferment of titles

Knocks, kudos for Soludo on crisis trailing conferment of titles

Mixed reactions have trailed the suspension of a traditional ruler of an Anambra community and threat to others by the state government over the conferment of chieftaincy titles on some individuals during the Yuletide.

Residents who spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in interviews yesterday blamed the traditional rulers for their woes, while others said the government was overbearing.

NAN reports that the Anambra government on January 8, through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, suspended Igwe Damian Ezeani of Neni community for conferring chieftaincy title on Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah.

The government, which accused the traditional ruler of not complying with the provisions of Traditional Ruler Code of Conduct (2020), also threatened to sanction those who abused the process.

Mr Sam Okeke, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, said if there was a law which said the state should know about any conferment of chieftaincy titles, the government was right in its actions.

Okeke, however, said it was unfortunate that such a law existed in the first place because it was the prerogative of traditional rulers to decide who to confer titles on and that it should not be a matter for the government.

He described as a jamboree, a situation where traditional rulers conferred titles on as many as 30 persons on one occasion without clear criteria or proof of how the beneficiary impacted the welfare of the people and infrastructure development of the community.

According to him, “I do not think it is fair to dethrone or suspend a traditional ruler for conferring chieftaincy titles on people, it amounts to restricting their rights and privileges.

“The law cannot be actually very justifiable, it actually should not be there in the first place because it affects their image natively,” he said.

Okeke, an international lawyer, said the behaviour of some of the traditional rulers was controversial and that some of them had compromised their stool by being politically-inclined.

He said the abuse of the traditional institution was perpetrated mostly by those who were supported by the government to ascend the throne, adding that when they yielded to be candidates of government, abuse is inevitable.

Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka, founder of Ogilisi Foundation, an Igbo sociocultural organisation, said traditional rulers deserved better treatment in the hands of the government for the collective image of Igbo people.

Ezeonwuka said although some traditional rulers erred in their actions, they should not be sacked as students in a classroom as had been the case in recent time, but the government should instead set up a panel of inquiry.

He said it was reprehensible for any traditional ruler to confer chieftaincy title for personal interest and monetary gains, but anyone who had contributed to the development of his community was entitled to a chieftaincy title.

Ogilisi, as he is popularly called, said traditional rulers could as well use such gestures to attract individuals who could execute development projects in the communities.

According to him, it should not have been the case but because the traditional institution has been made to become part of the government, where the government pays the piper, they should dictate the tune.

“Government gives them vehicles, pays them salaries, they depend on the government so they should be under government control.

“They should have set up an inquiry made up of people with good knowledge of tradition, not politicians. These people will look at the issues and advise the government appropriately and help the government play safe.

“The threat and sack of Igbo traditional rulers is not good for the dignity of the stools and image of the people,” he said.

On their part, the Ikemba Front, a political pressure group, said singling out a traditional ruler for conferring a chieftaincy title on Ubah, who had indicated interest to contest the 2025 governorship election, was a show of political desperation by Soludo.

Mr Arinze Awogu, the National Coordinator of the group, condemned what he called “selective justice” meted out to Igwe Ezeani and by extension Ubah.

According to the group, no fewer than 177 eminent personalities were conferred with varying chieftaincy titles during the yuletide and new year celebrations by no fewer than 21 highly revered traditional rulers across Anambra.

“We wondered why Igwe Damian Ezeani should be singled out for vilification and witch hunting

“We challenge the government to publish clearance letters issued in favour of all  the recipients of chieftaincy titles,  showing that they complied with *Section 2 C* of the _Anambra State Traditional Rulers Law,” he stated

The group described *Section 2 C* of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Law as draconian, repugnant to natural justice and good conscience and an affront to the independence of the sacred traditional institution.

A source who pleaded anonymity said the law was made by the traditional rulers themselves, passed by the State House of Assembly and signed into law by the state governor in 2020.

The source said since the traditional rulers conscientiously made the law for themselves, they should be bound by it as it was not a creation of Soludo’s administration.

Onoh exhibited Tinubu’s seven wonders in seven days – Onoh

President Bola Tinubu’s former spokesman in the south east, Dr. Josef Onoh, has flaunted what he described as the President’s achievements in the first week of 2014, saying they have been “sweeping.”

Onoh noted that in just one week, the  President has been able to demonstrate how fast and decisive a leader could be in matters of national interest, particularly when they are germane issues to a nation in a hurry to overcome challenges.

He stated that in one of the recent events, the Deputy Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria in charge of financial system stability, Aisha Ahmed was arrested and detained by the Department of the State Service (DSS) over alleged fraudulent acquisition of shares in Polaris bank, Titan Bank/Union Bank, including how the sum of $300 million was raised to complete the acquisition of Union Bank by Titan Bank.

He explained in a bid to sanitise the financial system, Tinubu through the Central Bank of Nigeria(CBN) dissolved the board and management of Titan Trust Bank and three others, adding that the dissolution was in response to a report submitted by the Special Investigator on the CBN and Related Entities, Jim Obazee.

According to Onoh: “Mr. President had within the week suspended a Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu, over matters that have to do with alleged misappropriation of funds in governance, particularly in the present era of economic crunch when cautiousness is what is required to gain public confidence in government.

“In an intertwined connection, another minister was summoned over a controversial contract scam allegation.”

He further said that President Tinubu pursuant to prudence management of funds reduced his travel entourage and dramatically cut costs on travel matters by 60%,  an action he said was in obedience to the public agreement that he should cut cost of governance, particularly while on local and foreign trips.

“Going forward, the president in his zeal to scale up productivity, relieved the Chief Executive Officer, CEO, of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), and his Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) CEO counterpart, of their duties.

“It was with the same dispatch that Mr. President ordered for blacklisting of degree certificates obtained within six weeks from universities in the Republic of Benin and went further to announce plans by the federal government to build a new Chinese-built steel plant in Nigeria.

“In the busy week, President Tinubu launched the Nigeria immigration automated passport portal to ease the pressure of citizens obtaining international passports for their travel arrangements.

“He went further to clear the ₦12 billion outstanding for the Super Eagles and other national teams and has begun payment for the wage support benefits to civil servants, while disbursing ₦105.5 billion for 266 road repairs across the country.

“In the international scene, President Tinubu within the week intervened to bring peace in Sierra Leone after the November 2023 failed coup attempt in the West African country.

“Moving forward, he approved the appointment of a new board and management team headed by Jalal Arabi for the National Hajj Commission (NAHCOM), pending confirmation by the Nigerian Senate. The appointment was to ensure hitch-free and seamless 2024 Hajj operations.

“The President mandated the appointees to dedicate themselves to the task of ensuring that operations of the National Hajj Commission are more efficient, transparent, and responsive to the needs of Nigerians.

“In the same vein, the President has approved the appointment of nine qualified Nigerians to serve on the board of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission (NCPC) under the chairmanship of Colonel Aloche Adole.

“Clearly Mr. President has so far upheld his covenant with the people and given hope to the hopeless which is a testament of our renew hope and the major reason we are united to stand on his mandate,” he stated.

  • Diri urges Fed Govt to review maritime assets protection policy

Diri urges Fed Govt to review maritime assets protection policy

Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has called on the Federal Government to review its policy of using non-state actors in its effort to secure the maritime environment of the country.

Sen. Diri, who expressed concern that the continued use of such unconventional security agents might cause greater security challenges in future, called for the strengthening of the Nigerian Navy to perform its constitutional responsibility.

He spoke yesterday during a visit by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogala, at the Government House in Yenagoa.

Represented by his deputy, Sen. Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, the governor said individuals and groups should not be allowed to execute oil pipelines surveillance and protection contracts independent of the supervision of conventional security agencies.

He said safeguarding the nation’s territorial waters is the exclusive preserve of the Navy and should be supported in every way possible to enable it effectively secure oil and other critical national assets in coastal communities.

“Already there have been reported cases of violation of human rights and security breaches by surveillance contractors in local communities around the state,” he noted.

He took the opportunity to commend officers and men of the Nigerian Navy serving in the state for demonstrating professionalism in discharging their duties, which he noted, had helped Bayelsa to remain one of the most peaceful states in the country.

Calling on the Navy to sustain the tempo, Diri suggested to the Chief of Naval Staff to give official recognition and rewards to the officers for their professional efficiency so far.

The governor said: “The cry of the Bayelsa State Government is that non-state actors are not the best to protect our oil assets. In the name of oil pipeline protection contracts, most of them violate the rights of our people in our localities.

“Let us not do things that we will regret as a country tomorrow. What the Federal Government is doing right now is like cutting the nose to spice the face.

“You don’t need to cut off your head because you have rotten teeth. You simply look for took brush. You will be surprised that we will get to a point where some of these non-state actors will start to challenge.

“I will suggest that the Nigerian Navy should be allowed to play that role to protect our critical oil assets. The Federal Government should therefore rejig or reinvent its security strategy to secure these assets.”

Continuing, he said: “Bayelsa State and the Nigerian Navy are one. The Navy is part of us, and we are part of the Navy.

“The naval officers in Bayelsa State are very professional in their duties. I have to commend them for that. They have helped make Bayelsa one of the safest states in Nigeria.

“The Navy should give these officers an official recognition and reward them accordingly for their high professional efficiency.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogala, said the Nigerian Navy could not do without Bayelsa State in view of the state’s strategic location and the critical oil and gas facilities it is hosting in the Niger Delta.

Admiral Ogala, who described the recent electoral victory of the Governor and his Deputy as a true victory for the people of Bayelsa, appealed to the government and people of the state to sustain their goodwill towards the Navy for better services.

The CNS particularly called on oil bearing communities to see the Navy as a friend and to show cooperation in the provision of credible information to curb criminality in the state.

He said: “Your victory is a victory for the people of Bayelsa State. You have done well in your first term and you will even do more in your second term.

“Bayelsa and the Nigerian are partners because Bayelsa is in the core of the Niger Delta. Bayelsa holds a lot of resources in oil and gas, and the protection of these assets is a key role of the Navy. The Navy’s duty is to create an enabling environment for the oil companies to produce their maximum output, and there has been significant improvement so far in the last six months.

“This is possible with the cooperation of the Bayelsa State Government  and the people; the Bayelsa State Government has also provided resources to the Navy. So we have a cordial relationship with the oil-producing communities, and we need more cooperation in intelligence and information to curb criminality around the facilities.”

The Chief of Naval Staff was accompanied on the visit by several top-ranking naval officers, including the Flag Officer Commanding, Central Naval Command, Rear Admiral S.J. Bura, and the Commander of NNS Soroh, Commodore A.O. Ojebode.

Onu emerges PDP candidate to contest Umahi’s seat

An Abuja-based lawyer, Mr. Silas Onu, has emerged as the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for next month’s by-election for Ebonyi South Senatorial Zone.

The Chairman of the Electoral Committee, Lekan Rotimi, said Onu garnered 143 votes out of the 144 votes cast, while one vote was declared invalid.

The other candidate, Senator Ama Nnachi, scored zero votes.

Mr. Ama Nnachi represented the zone from 2019 to 2023.

He was the candidate of the party for the 2023 general election, but lost to former Governor David Umahi

The primary election was held at the party’s Afikpo Local Government Secretariat yesterday.

It was monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officials.

The seat became vacant following the appointment of Senator Umahi as a minister by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Onu hailed the electoral committee for an unbiased officiating of the election.

He thanked the delegates for electing him to fly the party’s flag.

The candidate called on party members to support him to win the election, hoping that he would emerge victorious.

Onu will contest for the seat with All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Anthony Ani, who emerged at the weekend from the party’s primaries.

The other major opposition party, Labour Party, however, produced two parallel candidates from two parallel primaries on Sunday.

The election comes up on February 3.

  • Oil spill again hits Rivers community

Oil spill again hits Rivers community

Barely four months after two oil spills occurred at Eleme communities in Rivers State, another spill has hit K-Dere, in Gokana Local Government this year.

The incident, which happened on January 3, reportedly came from the Petroleum Products Marketing Company (PPMC) pipeline right of way that pumps crude to Port Harcourt Refinery.

Community members attributed the spill to equipment failure.

The Nation in Port Harcourt learnt that leakage occurred from a section of the facility, which ruptured and spilled crude into the community’s environment about 17 years ago and was repaired, but not clamped.

A statement by the Executive Director of Youth and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) in the state, Fyneface Dumnamene Fyneface, said the community was insisting on a Joint Investigation Visit (JIV) with the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA), to the spill site, apparently to ascertain the cause of the leakage before repairs would be carried out on the pipeline.

The community’s resistance stalled the quick attempt by PPMC to fix the spill point.

“But the company has temporarily stopped the spill with a cement barricade, to enable it continue the transportation of crude needed for the test run of the Port Harcourt Refinery, pending when requirements are met and permanent repairs are expected on the spill point,” Fyneface said.

    • Over 50 indigenes rendered homeless

The traditional ruler of Amakohia Autonomous Community in Ikeduru Local Government of Imo State, Eze Innocent Alaribe, has called on the Federal Government to intervene in the gully erosion in the villages in his area.

He said over 50 indigenes of the community had been rendered homeless, including himself.

He added that his palace had been abandoned by his cabinet chiefs and family members.

“If I want to visit my palace, I will park my vehicle at a long distance and trek to the place. My subjects are afraid of even going there. We have cried out several times to the government, but nothing has happened. We will, however, continue to appeal to them to come to our aide,” Alaribe said.

The President General of the community, Goddie Ukwu, who took reporters round the affected areas, lamented that the incident had forced many of the indigenes to desert their ancestral homes.

He said the erosion had disconnected his community from its neighbours, making the cost of transportation in and outside the area very expensive.

“We are going through hell in my community right now. Many homes have been abandoned because of erosion. This erosion can ‘swallow’ a two storey building. Three buildings have caved in and my people are leaving outside their homes.”

He expressed fear that the rains are coming and that the experience the people will go through to reach their homes will be tormenting because of the gullies.

“The road is no longer accessible. Before we go in and out of here, it’s like a merry go round. Okada will take you through bush path that you will almost be afraid if you are a visitor that they want to kidnap you.”

“Our school is daily losing students because parents are afraid to enrol their children in the school that is very close to the erosion site.

“Look at the airport, it’s very close to us from here, yet very far because of the erosion that has divided us from our neighbouring communities. We appeal to the government once more to help us. It’s beyond us,” Ukwu said.

    Minister drums support for Tinubu

The Minister of State for Petroleum in charge of Gas Resources, Ekperikpe Ekpo, has embarked  on a reach out to the people’s  initiative, taking full advantage of the long Yuletide  holiday to interact with the people of Akwa Ibom State in shoring up support for his principal, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

To drive the initiative, the minister

has been organising programmes to assure his audience of the president’s forthrightness and commitment in turning around the Nigerian trajectory in the right direction.

Speaking with Leaders of Thought under the aegis of Akwa Ibom Democratic Forum (ADF), the former federal lawmaker thanked members of the ADF for believing in the aspiration of President Tinubu in the keenly contested 2023 presidential election, and for selling his Renewed Hope manifesto in the state during the campaigns.

“I want to acknowledge the significant role the ADF played in the last general election in the state. One way or the other, you all played key roles in the daunting task of ensuring that my boss, President Tinubu, secured his victory. I assure you here and now that your efforts and personal sacrifices won’t be in vain,” he said.

The message was the same when the minister granted audience to the state working committee and a local chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Obong Stephen Ntukekpo and Mr. Joseph Ekanem.

“Rest assured that despite the mounting economic challenges, Mr. President is equal to the tasks and will surmount them. He is a tested and trusted hand,” the minister said in his opening remarks.

He advised party faithful and leaders to be Pan Nigerian in their outlook and move pass partisan politics for the overall interest and development of Nigeria.

He stressed that President Tinubu’s government was for every Nigerian irrespective of party affiliation or religious persuasion.

He urged members and leadership of Akwa Ibom State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) to give the Tinubu administration the benefit of the doubt and fair hearing in their reports as the Fourth Estate of the Realm.

He promised that with the Presidential Initiative on CNG and other bold moves of Mr. President, the global energy crisis would be a thing of the past in Nigeria.

Led by its Chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk, the State NUJ in the spirit of the season, was on a Christmas visit to the minister and to formally congratulate him on his assumption of office as a minister of the Federal Republic and the first Nigerian gas czar.
