Anambra State Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Agency has said it was ready to partner secondary schools in the state to develop solution-oriented apps and technologies.

Managing Director, Fred Agbata, spoke at the BossLadyLaw Business Challenge 2023 Finals and Awards Ceremony.

The event, held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, provided a platform for secondary school pupils to showcase their innovative ideas and entrepreneurial projects.

Agbata assured young entrepreneurs of his support, especially in advancement of technology education in Nigeria, encouraging interested schools to reach out to the agency for collaboration.

Underscoring that entrepreneurship was not for the faint-hearted, Agbata regretted that a staggering 90 per cent of new businesses failed in their first year, which he identified as a major challenge facing entrepreneurs.

He, however, encouraged participants not to be disheartened if their schools did not emerge as winners, stressing that success stories often stemmed from perseverance and resilience.

He added: “It’s important to learn from the experience and build upon the knowledge gained at such events. Don’t forget, the world eagerly awaits the contributions of budding entrepreneurs.

“Many people go to their graves afraid to try. There is never a special time to start a business, it’s your business, and the time is now.

“I must commend the organisers for their dedication to nurturing young talents and promoting innovation in Anambra State.

“I urge the pupils to pursue their dreams. The skills in the technology industry are in high demand with numerous opportunities for those willing to explore the field.”

  • ‘I’m not responsible for insecurity in Imo’

‘I’m not responsible for insecurity in Imo’

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma has said neither himself nor his government is instrumental to the killings in the state.

He spoke at his home town in Ozuh Omuma, Oru East Local Government during the dedication of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church Parish Ozuh Omuma, which the governor solely built and furnished.

In his remarks at the end of the service, an elated Governor Uzodimma thanked the dignitaries who came from different parts of the country and took the opportunity of the dedication to inform the congregation that neither he nor his government was instrumental to the killings in Imo State.

He described the insinuation as evil, devilish and an attempt to smear his image and blackmail his administration.

He said as a governor, he needed peace to serve the people well and urged those behind the insecurity to have a rethink or be ready to face the wrath of God.

The governor said despite the accusations and blackmail against his person and his administration, God had proved to be with him, adding: “Power belongs to God.”

He said as someone who had benefited from God’s grace, he owed God a lot of gratitude, noting that it was unthinkable for anyone to link him or his government to the cause of crises and violence in a state God made him the governor.

He admonished those responsible for the violence and carnage in Imo State to desist, “because they will at the end answer for their sins before God.”

Uzodimma said his ambition did not worth the blood of any human being.

Recalling the genesis of the newly- dedicated church he built for his community, the governor said he was inspired by the commitment of his late mother, Ezinne Rose Uzodimma, to church work, charity and the things of God.

He expressed fulfilment over the newly- dedicated church, saying, “a fulfilled life does not point to the number of wealth one has, but the number of faces that smile from one’s benevolence.”

The governor, who expressed joy that with the dedication of the church his mother will be happy wherever she is, said his joy knew no bounds, particularly as he looked at the smiling faces of the guests.

Explaining that the project was conceived some 16 years ago and modelled after the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama Abuja, Nigeria, he said he was encouraged by the late Catholic Bishop of Orlu, Gregory Ochiagha and the current Bishop, Rev. Ukwuoma, and regretted that Bishop Ochiagha was not alive to see the church completed and handed over to the diocese.

Governor Uzodimma expressed happiness that the people of Omuma and all well-meaning people of God were part of the dedication ceremony.

He said the church is but a token of appreciation of the numerous good things God has done for him.

He thanked the bishops, the clergy, particularly those from outside the state who joined in the dedication service.

In his Homily, Bishop Ukwuoma congratulated the governor on the uncommon feat of the building and donation of a “magnificent worship place of God to the Catholic Church.”

The bishop, who cautioned that “with the dedication of the church, it has now become the property of the diocese and the universal church,” warned against any infraction in the church.

He took the opportunity to appeal to the leaders to lead the people well “because there is a lot of hardship in the country.”

The ceremony was graced by five Catholic bishops, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, senators representing Imo State, Imo State Deputy Governor Prof. Placid Njoku, members of the Executive Council, traditional rulers and others

The event was organised in collaboration with the National Association Cross River State Students (NACRISS) worldwide.

She said the award, which was an annual event, was thefoundation’s modest way of improving the academic pursuit of indigent students of Cross River State origin, “especially at a time like this when Nigerians are going through difficulties occasioned by the petrol subsidy removal by the Federal Government.”

She said no stone would be left unturned to ensure the sustenance of the award, which cut across the payment of school fees, faculty fees, student house rent, transportation fare, feeding among other gestures.

According to her, “this is a dinner event of the National Association of Cross River State Students (NACRISS) worldwide, in collaboration with Florence Agogo Foundation. So, it’s a dinner and a scholarship disbursement and award night.

“Florence Agodo Foundation is a charity organisation that specialises in the need of children.

“Our areas of focus are health care, education and empowerment.

“In the area of education, we looked around the 18 local governments and selected our beneficiaries. I am a Cross Riverian from Obudu Local Government and overtime, I have tried my best to see how we can help to improve the academic sojourn of the indigents in our midst.

“So, when the president of NACRISS reached out to me, I felt in this kind of event we needed to have the presence of all the benefiting students so that we can assist them in the payment of their school fees, faculty fees, transportation, house rent, feeding and so on.”

The Special Adviser on General Duties to Cross River State governor, Mr. Ekpenyong Akiba, hailed the organisers and sponsors of the award ceremony for complementing the government’s efforts in the educational subsector.

Akiba, who was the chairman of the occasion as well as one of the honorary awardees, said the foundation’s bursary award to indigent students was in line with the policy trust of the Governor Bassey Otu administration.

Presenting an honorary award to the chairman of the event and other awardees, the NACRISS President, Worldwide, Akpeke Peter, said the award was to recognise ‘Cross Riverians’ that had impacted positively in the lives of students.

One of the beneficiaries, Precious Asuquo, thanked Florence Agogo Foundation and NACRISS for providing a platform where students were offered scholarship to support their upkeep in school.

  • NIPR summit and the ‘threat’ of Artificial Intelligence in PR

NIPR summit and the ‘threat’ of Artificial Intelligence in PR

    • By Abdul Ozumi

Communication scholars and public relations practitioners in Nigeria have declared that Artificial Intelligence (AI) cannot replace human intelligence in whatever guise. At the Annual General Meeting and Public Lecture of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Kano Chapter, the experts opined AI is designed to replace manual work effectively and quickly, and cannot override the need for human input in the workspace.

In his presentation on “Artificial Intelligence and Spin Doctoring in Public Relations Practice in Nigeria”, the guest speaker, Professor Abdalla Uba Adamu, questioned the hype around AI. He noted that even though the technology will aid human efforts in all endeavours, including PR practice and data collection, it is impossible for it to replace human instinct, interactivity and creativity.

The guest speaker stated that AI cannot have superiority over human abilities, since computers could have remain exactly the same way in a hundred years without human inputs. The human element, he stressed, is not easily replaceable by technology because effective PR strategies require the expertise and experience of skilled professionals.

Admitting AI has become an essential part of the business landscape as the technology presents new opportunities for growth and development, Adamu, who holds professorships in Science Education, and Media and Cultural Communication, contended: “AI is a tool, not a human, and lacks the emotions needed when it comes to certain parts of the business.”

Managing Director of Image Merchants Promotion (IMPR), Yushau Shuaib agreed that it is impossible for AI to replace human intelligence, saying the technology can only enhance the work of professionals in the areas of audience targeting, content generation, media engagement, online reputation management and crisis management.

“AI is nothing new; search engines, location search tools, spell checkers, reverse image apps, computer games, among other tools, share the same feature. We can’t deny the fact that AI saves time, increases efficiency, improves accuracy and enhances competitive advantages. It merely augments human intelligence but can never replace creativity, human interactions and natural instinct; one cannot fall in love with a robot in the real sense,” Shuaib averred.

President of NIPR, Dr. Ike Neliaku, who said humans are immensely valuable in public relations because the need for creativity in interactions cannot be replaced by AI, commended the NIPR Chapter in Kano and a Governing Council member Dr. Sule Yau Sule for facilitating the lecture on contemporary issues.

In his remarks, Kano Commissioner of information, Alhaji Baba Dantiye advised practitioners to be up to date with modern tools for communication. The senior government official called on NIPR to organise more capacity building programmes on artificial intelligence for spokespersons and PR experts.

After inaugurating the newly elected leadership of NIPR in Kano, Dr. Neliaku embarked on a facility tour of IMPR’s PRNigeria Centre which owns PRNigeria, Economic Confidential, Spokespersons’ Digest and other titles. The delegation inspected the Digital Communication Room, Conference Office, Research and Fact-Checking desks.

Mr. Shuaib said most of the staff are certified public relations practitioners with diverse skills in journalism, social media, strategic communication and fact-checking using artificial intelligence. IMPR provides mentorship programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students through internship placements in its Abuja and Kano offices.

The publisher said having realised the importance of AI in PR, the firm deployed the technology for audience targeting, content generation, media engagement, perception index, online reputation management and sentiment analysis in crisis communication. Some of the tech tools are deployed for predictive analytics, media monitoring, budgeting, social media management, video production and speech-to-text contents.

Dr. Neliaku offered to partner with IMPR, recalling he was recently briefed by NIPR Vice President, Professor Emma Dandaura on the areas of collaboration. He said: “As we are planning the hosting of the national spokespersons’ workshop, we have assigned Dr. Sule Yau Sule, a veteran spokesperson to governors, ministers and senators, to chair the Planning Committee.

“On the request of IMPR for partnership on its annual Spokespersons’ Communication Awards, we hope the forthcoming National Spokespersons Summit that has been approved by the Minister of Information and National Orientation will also be a better platform to showcase and celebrate outstanding public relations campaigns by organisations and individuals.

“With what I have seen at the NIPR Conference in Kano, our proposed workshop will also focused on various ways in which artificial intelligence can be used in PR practice, the technological tools, the potential risks and benefits, the ethical considerations and likely case studies so that participants can stay up to date with the latest development.

“Let me congratulate Mallam Shuaib, a multi-talented PR practitioner whom I have known for more than two decades, for mentoring young journalists and communicators. The IMPR has been one of our ambassadors, using its centres in Abuja and Kano to teach young communicators on stakeholder engagement, entrepreneurship and digital economy. When I came into office, I insisted we must relate well with our chapters and ensure that PR practitioners succeed.”

The highlight of the events were the awards of honour by NIPR in Kano to Prof. Adamu and Mr. Shuaib, as well as the presentation of books published by PRNigeria staff to Dr. Neliaku, his immediate predecessor Mallam Mukhtar Sirajo, and a member of the institute’s Governing Council, Mr. Bashir Adamu Chedi.

    • Enugu Senate seat: Tribunal strikes out Nnamani’s petition

Ebonyi State Election Petitions Tribunal has affirmed the election of Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced Francis Nwifuru winner of the March 18 poll.

It also declared Chukwuma Ifeanyi Odii of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as first runner-up and Bernard Odoh of All Progressives Grand Alliancev(APGA) as second runner-up.

But both Odii and Odoh and their parties, PDP and APGA, rejected the outcome and vowed to challenge it.

They subsequently approached the tribunal seeking the nullification of Nwifuru’s election on the grounds of non-compliance with the Electoral Act 2022 and alleged failure to score the majority of lawful votes cast at the poll.

In separate petitions, the duo of Odoh and Odii argued that Nwifuru was not qualified to contest the election on the platform of the APC because he was still a member of the PDP.

However, Nwifuru’s party, the All Progressives Congress, submitted a letter before the tribunal showing that the governor resigned from the PDP while serving as Speaker of the state House of Assembly, and defected to the APC before its primary election.

In its judgment yesterday, the three-man panel of the tribunal chaired by Justice O. Lekan held that the issue of nomination and sponsorship by a political party, being a pre-election matter, should have been challenged before the Federal High Court before the election.

The tribunal then declined jurisdiction to entertain the grounds of Nwifuru’s sponsorship by APC, saying it was an internal political party matter.he National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal sitting in Enugu has struck out a suit filed by Chimaroke Nnamani, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), challenging the victory of Senator Kelvin Chukwu of the Labour Party.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Chukwu as the winner of the Enugu East Senatorial District poll after he secured over 69,000 votes to defeat former governor of Enugu State, Nnamani, who got about 49,000 votes.

However, Nnamani had alleged that the election was marred by over-voting, irregularities, election malpractices and non-compliance with the electoral guidelines.

He also urged the court to declare him the rightful winner of the election or declare as invalid the results of the election.

Delivering its ruling yesterday, the tribunal upheld Senator Kelvin Chukwu’s victory.

It awarded a cost of N500,000 against the petitioners in favour of the three respondents, Kelvin Chukwu, Labour Party and INEC.

The three-man panel led by Justice Nusirat Umar unanimously dismissed the petition for being vague, lacking in merit, incompetent, generic and an academic exercise.

He asked the leaders of apex Ogoni socio-cultural  group, KAGOTE, an acronym for Khana, Gokana, Tai and Eleme, the four councils comprising Ogoniland, the Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People (MOSOP) and other Ogoni political leaders to wake up from their slumber and agitate for the rights of their people.

    • To facilitate six-lane road construction

Abia State Government yesterday began demolition of residential and commercial houses on Tower-Ossah-Michael Okpara Square road, leading to Umuahia.

It said the demolition would allow the building of a six-lane road from Enugu-Aba-Port-Harcourt expressway, leading to Umuahia, the capital.

Our correspondent reports that the Michael Okpara-Ossah-Tower road, over the years, because of huge influx of vehicles into the state capital, usually witnesses gridlock that forces commuters going into and coming out of Umuahia, including those using Enugu-Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway and Umuahia-Amachara-Obowo-Mbano road, to spend hours and sometimes days on the road, especially during the Yuletide.

The Nation had reported that the state government postponed the demolition by a fee weeks to enable it tidy up grey areas and allow owners of affected property to vacate their property, to give way for the demolition.

Our correspondent reports that the state government, on the expiration of the grace period yesterday, deployed heavy duty equipment in site to start demolition of the affected property, to give way for the commencement of the road project expansion.

While some residents are sad that they have been displaced from where they have been doing business in over two decades, others express happiness about the political will of Dr. Otti in doing what he promised ‘Abians’ during his campaign.

The state government said it had begun process for the payment of compensation fees to those whose structures would be affected in the demolition for the construction of a six-lane Ossah road in Umuahia.

‘Avoid feeding social media with negative narratives’

Anambra State ICT Agency has urged media influencers to resist the temptation of feeding the social media space with negative narratives about the state.

Managing Director, Fred Agbata, gave the advice yesterday at the one year anniversary celebration of the Wikimedia Anambra Network of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria, Wikimedia Foundation, WMF.

He said there were several positive stories about Anambra than the negative narratives being peddled by enemies of the state.

He congratulated the Wikimedia Anambra Network on her one year anniversary, underscoring its place in the Governor Chukwuma Soludo-led administration’s efforts to make the state liveable and prosperous.

He said: “Media practitioners must brace up to the challenge of projecting right stories about Anambra, especially through digital platforms such as the Wikipedia.

“If you don’t tell your story, no one will, because no one knows your culture and your realities the way you do. For example, editors in Lagos or elsewhere may not know exciting stories of Anambra communities.

“That’s why it’s important this kind of network multiplies across all parts of the country. It’s also why Anambra ICT Agency decided to work with the Network to assist in changing the narratives.”

Head, Wikimedia User Group, Anambra Network, Dr. Ngozi Osuchukwu, said the Network had planned and executed over 22 projects in the state and beyond since its one year of existence.

“These projects cut across many areas including health, governance and politics, community information, open knowledge and lately, they ignited a partnership with the state government, through the Anambra State ICT Agency.

“The Anambra Network won the network with the most participants in July’s ‘Naija Office Hour’. From here, people have been selected to attend Wikimedia international conferences.

“Last month, one of us was sponsored to Singapore for a Wikimedia activity. In the months to come, one of us is going to Morocco for Wiki activity and another person is going to India also soon.

“So, there are a whole lot of activities going on. Today offers us opportunity to count our numerous successes,” she said.
