Imo demolishes criminal hideouts in Owerri

The Imo State Government has intensified its campaign against criminality with the demolition of several identified hideouts in Owerri and its   neighbouring communities.

The operation, carried out during the week, forms part of the broader security initiatives under the Governor Hope Uzodimma effort to stamp out criminal activities in the state.

Among the demolished locations were black spots at Irete, Ihiagwa, around Emmanuel College and behind Deeper Life off Aba Road, and Avu Junction (behind the new prison). Security intelligence confirmed that these locations served as bases where criminals planned and launched nefarious activities, including kidnapping and armed robbery.

Residents, who came out in large numbers to witness the exercise, expressed gratitude to Uzodimma for his determination to rid the state of criminal elements.

Some described the governor’s action as courageous and timely, noting that the cleared areas had long been sources of fear.

One resident said: “We thank our governor for taking this bold step. These places were giving us sleepless nights. By clearing them out, he has restored peace and safety to our community.”

Another resident added: “Governor Uzodimma has shown once again that he has the interest of the people at heart. We  are grateful for his commitment to protecting lives and property.”

The exercise also led to the arrest of several suspects, with weapons recovered and handed over to security agencies for further investigation and prosecution.

Speaking during the operations, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Monitoring and Compliance, Nze Chinasa Nwaneri, who coordinated the operation, reaffirmed the administration’s resolve to stamp out crimes across the state.

“This government, under the leadership of His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodimma, will not allow criminals to have any hiding place in Imo State. We will continue to identify, dismantle, and demolish every known black spot until our communities are safe and free from fear.”

He said the priority of Uzodimma administration is to protect the lives and property of the people, adding that the governor has identified security as the bedrock of development.

He vowed that he would not relent until Imo State becomes one of the safest places to live and do business.

Nwaneri disclosed the government will carry out similar operations across the state until all criminal hideouts are completely eradicated.

Abia ADC still embroiled in leadership crisis amidst coalition talk

There is bad blood among few members of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Abia State as they have continued to lay claim to the structure of the party in the state.

The two factions led by one Deacon Iyke Nwoke and the Obinna Don-Norman led faction have been engaging each other in a media war as they both claim authenticity of the party’s leadership.

The leadership crisis in the party, our correspondent reports, would further scare away potential coalition parties who would have helped the party to become a force in the state’s political turf in 2027.

Community demands justice after violent attack

The Umualumaku community in Uzoagba, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, has demanded justice following violent attack by suspected hoodlums.

According to them, the incident left a local vigilante, identified simply as Obinna battling for his life after being shot in the leg by the suspected hoodlums.

In a petition dated July 5, 2025, addressed to the Director of State Services, the National Security Adviser, and the Inspector General of Police, made available to newsmen in Ibadan, Umualumaku community alleged that the suspected hoodlums had orchestrated several violent attacks against them.

The petition, stated: “In the early hours of May 6, 2025, the suspected hoodlums stormed our community boundary armed with sophisticated guns, machetes and clubs to vandalise our gate.

“They engaged in shooting, took 15 persons hostage, and fatally wounded one vigilante, who is currently in intensive care.”

An eyewitness, Mr Akuta Innocent, said he received a phone call from his superior to call his security men to proceed to where the gate was being erected to avoid further damage to it.

He said on approaching the where the gate was erected, he saw a Siena through illumination of the street light.

He explained that the vehicle, conveying unknown persons drove pass the area more than five times on the fateful night.

Akuta explained that after the incident, he returned to the scene with a view to gathering possible items as evidences.

He said upon arrival at the scene at the early hours of the day around 6am, he recovered “three empty cartridge of AK47, and two empty cartridges of assault rifle, and two shovels, hammers, face-cap, and a pair of slippers” were recovered and handed over to the police.

Barrister Kingsley Onunwa, the Legal Adviser for Umualumaku people, who also confirmed the matter has been charged to court, expressed confidence that justice will be duly and adequately served at the end of the case.

He described the incident as unfortunate, unwarranted and uncivilised, calling for justice and adequate compensations for Obinna whose life, he said has been rendered meaningless by the perpetrators and sponsor of the dastardly act.

The victim, who has been hospitalised since the incident on June 1, 2025, while narrating his ordeal said he was on a night patrol with a colleague when suspected hoodlums opened fire on them at one of the community’s security gates.

He said: “It happened on June 1, I’m one of the security men, we have local security from my village. So, me and my senior security men were on routine patrol on that fateful day.

“We have a security gate and around 10 and 11pm, we usually close it for security reason and by 4am in the morning, we reopen it.

“We had erected the first and second gates. This is the third one we erected. The whole village and our chairman said we should go and monitor it.

“So, we were about seven in number on that day but me and my brother patrolled towards were the new gate was erected around 1am at night.

“Immediately I flashed my touch light on them and queried who was there, they opened gunshot and shot me in the leg. That was how it happened.”

Obinna, who has been transported to Abuja for further medical attention and security inquiries to aid investigation, lamented that the severity of his gunshot injury has rendered him incapacitated and unable to perform his fatherly role to his three young children as he has been confined to hospital bed.

  • 2025 Afiaolu Festival gets corporate support

2025 Afiaolu Festival gets corporate support

    By Chinaka Okoro

The Nnewi people in Anambra State are known for their positive traditional and cultural Afiaolu Festival. This manifests in all aspects of their lives, including the food they eat and the drinks they consume.

One of the cultural festivals they are known for is the Afiaolu Festival. Afiaolu is a traditional festival held annually in Nnewi, Anambra State, in August every year.

It commences on Eke day with what is traditionally described as Iwaji, a traditional breaking of the new yam that symbolises gratitude and the start of the harvest season.

This year, a corporate entity such as Life Continental Lager Beer was part of those that embraced and participated in the rich cultural heritage of Nnewi.

This is done by taking a leading role in supporting the Afiaolu Festival.

This collaboration not only highlights Life Beer’s commitment to tradition but also cements its position as a true partner in the celebration of Igbo identity and progress.

To demonstrate this commitment, the management of the company, led by its Corporate Affairs Manager (East) of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Joy Egolum, paid a courtesy visit to His Royal Highness, Igwe Kenneth O. Orizu, on Saturday at his regal palace in Otolo Nnewi.

The visit was a gesture of respect and a reaffirmation of Life Beer’s dedication to the upcoming Afiaolu Festival—an event deeply embedded in the cultural tapestry of the Igbo people.

“The Afiaolu Festival is more than a tradition; it is a vibrant celebration of harvest, heritage and communal unity,” the monarch said.

“Life Beer has always been an ardent supporter of traditional festivals. But, this year, we are amplifying our presence, pouring resources and creativity into making the 2025 Afiaolu Festival a spectacular homage to the enduring culture of the East,” Egolum said.

Life Beer has long stood as a beacon of Igbo entrepreneurial spirit and cultural pride. On the alignment between the brand and the people of Nnewi, she said.

“The resilience and enterprise of Nnewi’s people resonate deeply with what Life Beer represents. Their culture, passed down through generations, is a living testament to strength and unity. We are honoured to carry this torch alongside the oldest monarch, whose blessing fortifies our resolve,” Egolum stated.

This year’s Afiaolu Festival, which takes place on Wednesday, August 27, promises to be a substantial cultural experience like no other.

Life Beer is set to transform the festival grounds with stunning displays and vibrant activations.

Among the highlights will be the construction of the tallest yam pyramid—a towering symbol of agricultural abundance and the backbone of Igbo sustenance.

In a novel collaboration, Life Beer will partner with renowned chefs of Eastern descent who will share culinary wisdom and uplift local cooks, bridging generations through food and tradition.

    Moreover, the festival will honour

the day’s largest yam, an emblem of prosperity and nature’s bounty, in a ceremony that celebrates both the earth and the hands that nurture it.

“Those who will attend the festival can look forward to thrilling contests, life-changing prizes and a generous flow of Obiagu, which is our signature beer, available free to all who join in the celebration,” Egolum revealed with infectious enthusiasm.

Prince Obi Orizu, representing HRH Igwe Orizu and the people of Nnewi, warmly welcomed the Nigerian Breweries team. He expressed deep appreciation for Life Beer’s unwavering support of the Afiaolu festival and other cultural activities, highlighting the mutually beneficial partnership with Nigerian Breweries.

“Our relationship has thrived over the years, and we are eager to see it flourish even more to strengthen the cultural fabric of Nnewi,” he said.

Chima Dim, Senior Brand Manager of Life Beer, echoed this sentiment, describing Afiaolu Festival as “a bold proclamation of identity and cultural pride.”

We are not merely participants this year; we are innovators, ready to reimagine the festival experience and deepen our bond with the people of Nnewi.”

For the people of Nnewi, Afiaolu Festival is more than just a harvest festival; it is a sacred season of thanksgiving, a vibrant expression of unity and cultural pride. It is a time when families, masquerades, communities and visitors from far and near come together to share in joyous merriment—filled with the rhythms of traditional music, the flavours of age-old cuisine and the warmth of communal spirit.

This pulsating celebration reaffirms identity, preserves heritage and strengthens bonds that define the Igbo spirit.

  • Abia North 2027: APC chieftain tells ex-Deputy Gov to drop ambition, back Senator Kalu

Abia North 2027: APC chieftain tells ex-Deputy Gov to drop ambition, back Senator Kalu

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Edward Kalu Okocha, has commended the immediate past Deputy Governor Hon Ude Oko Chukwu, on his recent defection to the ruling Labour Party (LP) but urged him not to seek the Abia North Senatorial seat in 2027.

In a statement on Sunday in Ameke Abiriba, Okocha described Oko Chukwu’s defection as a bold and strategic step, noting that his decision to join Governor Alex Otti’s Labour Party underscores his commitment to the progress of Abia State and Abia North Senatorial Zone in particular.

He, however, cautioned the former Deputy Governor against allowing the excitement of his new political chapter to push him into contesting the Senate seat, stressing that Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has already positioned Abia North favourably through quality representation and seniority in the National Assembly.

“Distinguished Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has been doing an outstanding job in the Senate, bringing meaningful projects and empowerment to our zone. His legislative experience and seniority make him a strong contender for principal positions, including the Senate Presidency, which would be a game-changer for our people,” Okocha stated.

The APC chieftain drew from political history, recalling how he supported Oko Chukwu’s third-term bid in the Abia State House of Assembly in 2010, despite opposition from some quarters.

According to him, that strategic decision later paid off as Oko Chukwu went on to facilitate key projects such as the skill acquisition centre in Abiriba and eventually rose to the position of Deputy Governor.

“This same strategic thinking is needed today. As we look towards 2027, Abia North stands to benefit more by rallying round Senator Orji Uzor Kalu for re-election, thereby positioning him for greater responsibilities in the Senate. That is the path to unlocking more development and opportunities for our people,” Okocha added.

While congratulating Oko Chukwu once again, Okocha appealed to him to prioritise the collective progress of Abia North Senatorial Zone by supporting Senator Kalu’s re-election bid in 2027.

Mbah said that the state had stocked food, non- food materials, daily consumables and shelter materials such as foams and blankets, among others.

Mbah said that the State Government had taken all the necessary precautionary measures to ensure that flooding and the attendant losses did not occur in the state.

She said that on receipt of the predictions from both the Nigeria Meteorological Agency and Nigerian Hydrological Service Agency, SEMA first declared ‘Operations Desilt all Drainages’ in all the Local Government Areas.

According to her, the operation was totally successful as we got the buy-in of the council chairmen and traditional rulers of communities in the state for the campaign. “We also embarked on flood mitigation sensitisation among the communities in the council areas already identified as susceptible to flood.”

“We currently run radio jingles in different radio stations in native language for expansion of the dissemination of early warning information and precautionary mechanisms.

Mbah said that SEMA had been working in partnership with the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in interacting with other critical stakeholders on flooding preparedness programmes.

“SEMA staff, every last Monday of the month, undergo in-house training to enhance their operational capacity towards achieving disaster risk reduction both on flooding and any other emergencies in the state,” she said.

  • I remain Onishe of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom, says Delta chief

I remain Onishe of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom, says Delta chief

High Chief James Asika Onwordi has reaffirmed he remains the Onishe of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom in Aniocha South Local Government Area of Delta State, and would continue to serve diligently in that role.

Chief Onwordi’s reaffirmation came in response to a letter circulated on Tuesday, alleging his suspension as the Onishe of Ubulu-Uku (the Traditional Prime Minister of the Kingdom) by His Royal Majesty, Agbogidi Chukwuka Noah Akaeze, the Obi of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom.

Responding to the development, in a statement in Abuja, on Thursday, Chief Onwordi, dismissed the letter in its entirety, describing it as “baseless, mischievous and a calculated attempt to sow confusion within the kingdom.”

According to him, the letter was allegedly signed by one G. U. Ofulue, a man who, he noted, holds no recognised position within the palace structure.

He said: “To the best of my knowledge, Mr Ofulue is neither the Palace Secretary nor the Secretary to the Obi-in-Council of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom. He is equally not a member of the Obi-in-Council, the Traditional Council of Aniocha South Local Government Area, or the wider Delta State traditional framework.”

He stressed that his position as the Onishe of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom is both historically established and government-recognized. He explained that, as a traditional chief, he is duly certified and registered by the Directorate of Chieftaincy Affairs in the Office of the Delta State Deputy Governor, as provided for under the Traditional Rulers Council and Chiefs Law of 2008.

Chief Onwordi noted that the procedure for suspending or removing a traditional chief is clearly spelt out in Section 28 (1)(2)(3) of the law, and that no such process has ever been initiated against him, describing “the purported suspension letter as lacking any legitimacy or authority.”

He reiterated that at no time had any issue been raised between him and His Royal Majesty, Agbogidi Chukwuka Noah Akaeze, the Obi of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom.

“I have not been summoned to any meeting, nor have I received any notice of complaint or disciplinary procedure. The claim of my suspension is simply not true,” he said.

While condemning the letter as “a caricature and a demonstration of rascality”, Chief Onwordi called on the relevant authorities to investigate the source of the misinformation and to caution those attempting to destabilise the peace of Ubulu-Uku Kingdom.

He urged the people of the community and the general public to disregard the false publication and remain calm, assuring that he will continue to perform his duties as Onishe without obstruction.

  • Okonjo-Iweala’s praise for Tinubu’s reforms plus for 2027 re-election

    Okonjo-Iweala’s praise for Tinubu’s reforms plus for 2027 re-election

Renowned policy analyst and All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain from Anambra State, Pharmacist Ikeagwuonwu Klinsmann, has hailed the recent commendation by Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), describing it as “a strong endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s bold reforms and a compelling reason Nigerians must continue to support his leadership beyond 2027.

Okonjo-Iweala, in a recent meeting with Tinubu acknowledged the macroeconomic stability achieved through reforms such as subsidy removal, unified exchange rates, and fiscal discipline, stating, “Tinubu has to be given the credit for the stability of the economy… You cannot really improve an economy unless it’s stable”.

She, however, stressed the urgent need to complement stabilisation with economic growth initiatives and stronger social safety nets to cushion the pains of reforms on ordinary citizens.

In a statement in Abuja, Klinsmann welcomed her assessment, viewing it as both validation and a strategic call to action.

As a committed APC stakeholder, he expressed readiness to support this vision.

“President Tinubu has done the hard part of stabilizing the economy. The next step, as Dr. Okonjo-Iweala rightly said, is to create jobs and strengthen safety nets. This is not a criticism but a natural progression of reforms, and as loyal stakeholders of the APC, we stand ready to support this vision,” Klinsmann said.

He pointed to recent data as strong evidence of the solid foundation laid by the government: Nigeria’s inflation rate has steadily eased for four consecutive months, cooling to 21.88 percent in July 2025 while GDP grew by 3.13 percent in the first quarter as a result of rebasing, expanding the economy’s size to over N372.8 trillion ($244 billion).

These show that President Tinubu’s reforms are producing results. Nevertheless, growth still lags behind the ambitious 6 to 7 percent target for 2027.

Klinsmann also invoked IMF and World Bank assessments that caution continued vulnerabilities – specifically Nigeria’s rising debt service burden estimated at 15.1 percent of GDP, persistent food inflation at 22.74 percent despite overall gains and structural budget fragilities, including expensive fuel subsidies and high recurrent spending.

As strategic, morale-boosting actions, Tinubu’s economic team deserves praise, Klinsmann emphasized.

He described the GDP rebasing as a significant analytical milestone – reducing Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio from 52 to 40 percent, aligning it with global norms. But he warned: stability must translate into tangible improvement in people’s lives.

Proposing forward-leaning solutions, Klinsmann recommended a four-pronged expansion plan:

According to him: “First, scale up social safety nets through targeted interventions – conditional cash transfers, school feeding, and food vouchers to shield citizens from hardship while reforms mature. “Safety nets must not be an afterthought,” he said, referencing Okonjo-Iweala’s emphasis on cushioning the vulnerable. The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Klinsmann suggested, should be expanded to cover 20 million additional low-income Nigerians. He also called on the National Assembly to expedite the passage of the Social Safety Net Bill and the Jobs Growth Initiative Act, to institutionalize these measures.

“Second, launch a national job creation initiative centered on agri-enterprise, renewable energy, digitization, and MSMEs. Back this with zero-interest loans, grants for youth and women, and streamlined regulatory supports to position entrepreneurship as the engine of recovery. Klinsmann recommended that scaling up of the Women Exporters Fund and digital economy initiatives to empower women and young people; and expanded access to health insurance and vocational training for millions of low-income Nigerians. He also called for strong coordination between fiscal and monetary authorities to stabilize the naira, curb inflation, and ensure reforms yield tangible benefits for ordinary Nigerians.

“Third, accelerate infrastructure-led growth: roads, ports, broadband, and power – creating both immediate jobs and long-term competitiveness. Klinsmann pointed to Nigeria’s services sector growth of 4.33 percent contributing 57 percent to GDP as evidence that even incremental investments yield significant returns.

“Fourth, prioritize sectoral modernization, especially agriculture – where insecurity has reduced output in states like Benue by 21% – to ensure food security, export capacity, and resilience. Agricultural modernization, Klinsmann opined, should factor-in irrigation, and storage, to ensure food security.”

While urging the Federal Government to foster regional and International trade, Klinsmann advised the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreements should be expeditiously ratified, to unlock export opportunities for Nigerian businesses. He also called for the negotiation of bilateral trade deals with the EU, UAE, and India, to diversify export markets.

Klinsmann reaffirmed that these are collaborative enhancements, not directives. “We share the goal of inclusive prosperity. We don’t stand apart – we stand together, as partners in progress,” he said.

He reflected that these policy refinements come at a critical juncture: with inflation still painful and the high cost of staple foods like rice rising over 153%. A recent general strike over wage hardship, Klinsmann noted, further underscores the urgency of social support.

Read Also: Reforms can restore investors’ confidence, unlock AfCFTA opportunities – Okonjo-Iweala

Yet, with global confidence returning, as seen in improved debt metrics, rebased GDP, and calming inflation, Klinsmann argues that Nigeria stands at an inflection point. President Tinubu’s first tenure has delivered stability; the next political dispensation must deliver shared prosperity. “The path to 2027 must be about translating stability into opportunity for every Nigerian. Nobody is better positioned than President Tinubu to conclude the laudable work he has courageously started,” Klinsmann said.

Klinsmann reminded Nigerians that reforms of this magnitude are never without pain, urging patience and unity. “We must remember that transformation is a process. Nigerians should not despair but rally behind Mr. President, because the dividends of these reforms will surely come. Okonjo-Iweala’s global voice confirms that we are on the right course.”

Klinsmann concluded by reaffirming his confidence in Tinubu’s leadership, saying the foundation laid for economic stabilization is historic and must be built upon with deliberate people-centered policies.

“President Tinubu has laid the foundation. Now is the time to raise the structure – a Nigeria where every citizen has food on the table, jobs in their hands, and hope for a better future.

” With his leadership and the people’s support, 2027 will not just be about winning elections but consolidating prosperity for all. If we stay the course, Nigeria can become one of Africa’s strongest growth stories by 2027 – not just in charts, but in lives transformed.”
