  • Three-year-old needs N500, 000 to survive

    Three-year-old needs N500, 000 to survive

One year after he underwent surgery as a result of inability to pass stool, three-year-old Taiwo Ojelabi needs N500, 000 for another surgical operation.

Taiwo, a twin baby boy who developed the problem during birth, had congenital abnormality with perforated anus.

When Mrs Doyin Ojelabi, a teacher at a private primary school and mother of the twin was pregnant, she registered for antenatal care at Goodwill Child Welfare Clinic and Maternity Centre; a private hospital located at Mabolaje area of Oyo State.

During routine ultra-sound screening, Doyin’s womb was confirmed twin gestation.

Though the hospital’s facility could not detect the abnormality during the screening process, it was detected after delivery, when one of the twins was unable to pass stool. The other twin baby boy had no health challenge at birth.

Consequently, the baby with abnormality was referred to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, the Oyo State capital where the first constructive surgery known as colostomy was successfully performed at a cost of N150, 000.

With the surgery, Taiwo could pass stool through a pipe connected to his abdomen.

Another surgery has been recommended for the final repair that will enable him to pass stool normally. The cost of the surgery is put at N500, 000.

While the mother is a teacher, her husband is a cobbler. They do not have such huge amount of money to enable their son to undergo the all-important surgery.

Confirming the development, the Medical Director of the hospital, Mr. Raheem Olaniyi, who personally mobilised support for the first surgery, appealed to well-meaning individuals for assistance, in

order to save the ailing twin from premature death.

Speaking in an interview, Doyin, who looked dejected having wept profusely, narrated how his son went through excruciating pain before he could pass stool.

She said: “I watched my twin baby reeling helplessly in pain whenever he wants to pass out excreta. He would cry very loud before the stool is passed out. While adjusting the pipe in the abdomen for him, he cries uncontrollably to the extent that veins in his body will be visible.

“It takes some minutes after the stool is passed before my child can get relief. We have exhausted all our fortunes on this ailment. In fact, feeding the children is a very serious problem, let alone buying drugs for them. My salary every month is less than N10, 000.”

Taiwo, who wore tattered clothes solicited financial assistance from governments and charitable organisations

to save the life of her son. She said the surgical operation ought to have been carried out if they money is available.

  • Group demands compensation over killings

The President of Ofuobi Igbo Organisation (OIO) and Eze Umuokorobia of Lagos State, Nnaemeka Agbo, has condemned the spate of killings in Igbo land by Fulani herdsmen. He said the ugly development has attracted the attention of Igbo youth at home and in the Diaspora.

He said the youth have studied the situation and were pained, adding that they are waiting for the Federal Government’s reaction.

Agbo said: “I thank Mr. President on the latest direction to security agencies to fish out the perpetrators and their sponsors. I also appreciate the concern of Ohanaeze Ndigbo and Governors of the Southeast geo-political zone on the plight of our kinsmen who lost their wives, children and husbands during the massacre in Enugu State.

“The Boko Haram insurgency began on the disguise of fighting against Western education. In no time, thousands of people in the Northeast were killed and millions displaced. The victims, including Ndigbo, lost properties worth millions of Naira. We shall not fold our hands and allow such killings to continue in the Southwest and Southeast. The Fulani herdsmen must be stopped.

“I therefore, call on all Igbo youth, governors and leaders to be pro-active in checkmating the barbaric killings of Ndigbo even in their fatherland by the herdsmen.  Vigilance groups should be established and equipped to guard against re-occurrence of such act.”

The Ofuobi Igbo Youth Organis-ation of Nigeria hereby demands as follows:

“That the Federal Government should set up unbiased panel of inquiry to unravel the remote and immediate causes of the massacre of Igbo people in Enugu State, investigate and establish if the Enugu State Commissioner of Police and the Army compromised in their duties. The killers and their sponsors must be brought to justice.

“That the Fulani herdsmen should leave Igbo land immediately to avoid reprisal attacks because they have killed more than 500 people; including children whose blood are crying to heaven.

“That the Federal Government should compensate the families of the deceased and provide relief materials to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) in Enugu State as being done in the Northeast.

  • Rape victims: Stakeholders seek support for centre

Rape victims: Stakeholders seek support for centre

Senator Florence Ita-Giwa has pledged her support for Mirabel Centre, Lagos a non-government organisation (NGO) providing free medical and psychosocial services for sexual assault and rape victims in Lagos.

Ita-Giwa, who revealed this following the expiration of the centre’s three-year sponsorship deal with the United Kingdom Department for International Development (DFID) in March this year, called on the government and individuals to help the centre because of the important roles it plays in the lives of rape victims.

Senator Ita-Giwa, a guest at an event tagged “Magenta and Black, Art and Fashion for Charity,” which aimed at raising funds through public support and auction of art works donated by friends and partners of the Mirabel Centre in Lagos, nearly betrayed her emotion during a presentation by the founder of the centre, Mrs. Itoro Eze-Anaba on some of the experiences of rape victims, particularly the story of 14-year-old girl who was raped severally by her father but was saved and treated free at Mirabel Centre.

She said such a man should have his organ cut off, because “that child has been killed as far as I am concerned.” She expressed her support for the centre, even as she urged the government and Nigerians to support the initiative in order to keep it alive.

“The Mirabel Centre is a wonderful idea. The management should continue with the laudable initiative; they have my support. I do hope the government will come in and give their support,” Senator Ita-Giwa said.

According to Mrs. Eze-Anaba, the Mirabel Centre, which is located at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), has provided free medical and psychosocial services for over 1,300 clients in the last three years.

”The funding for Mirabel Centre by DFID came to an end in March this year. We appreciate DFID’s support for the past three years. The Magenta and Black Art, Fashion event was born out of necessity and the passion of some friends of the centre  who felt compelled to do all they could to ensure the continued survival of the centre. We also felt that it was time that we Nigerians took personal responsibility for the protection of our sons and daughters, sisters and mothers from the scourge of sexual abuse,” Mrs. Eze-Anaba said.

Mrs. Ayotola Jagun, a supporter of the Mirabel Centre said she was surprised that despite the huge responsibilities and benefits of the centre to the society, it only got the attention of foreign organisation without any government’s assistance.

Other friends of Mirabel such as Victor Ehikhamenor, Gbolahan Ayoola, Jumoke Sanwo, Olumide Oresegun, Malaika Najem, Deola Ade Ojo and Lisa Folawiyo, among others, donated their works which were auctioned to support the centre.

Mother of a victim, Mrs. Anyanwu narrated how a 40-year-old man came into her house to rape her daughter.  She thanked Mirabel Centre for the free treatment provided to save the girl’s life. She urged the government and Nigerians to support the organisation, saying “Mirabel must not die.”

  • ‘We’ll provide quality education’

    ‘We’ll provide quality education’

The Executive Secretary of Ikorodu Local Government Area, Wasiu Ayodeji Adesina has said the council is committed to the provision of quality education for the citizens. He made the promise during this year’s edition of the Spelling Bee Competition organised for some primary and secondary students

    at the council’s secretariat.

Represented by his wife, Bolanle, the council chief advised the contestants to be committed to their studies to enable them to be useful to themselves and the society, saying that when they are valuable citizens, they would be able to contribute to the country’s socio-economic and political development. He also urged them to eschew all forms of social vices that may prevent them from becoming useful citizens.

He said education is the bedrock of any emerging society, saying “the event was aimed at encouraging our young ones to strive towards excellence and hard work as means of achieving greatness.

He said the competition was all about learning and improving one’s knowledge through spelling words that may prove taxing. He praised the efforts of Lagos State Government in improving the standard of education, saying that the competition serves as a continuous assessment for schools.

Praising the wife of former Lagos State Governor, Senator Oluremi Tinubu for initiating the competition as a way of improving quality of education in the state, the council chief said the annual competition has helped in no small way in widening the scope of knowledge of the participating pupils and students in the area.

Mr. Adesina reminded the audience of the fact that the Spelling Bee Competition serves as eye-opener not only for the youth, but also for adults.

Continuing, he said: “Spelling is a fundamental step in education and it should be taken seriously. It forms part of the fundamentals of reading even though many unintentionally ignore it. It is a matter that should be taken seriously.”

Uneanya (Mrs.), at the primary school category, Miss Ogundipe Zainab of Ayangburen Primary School, Ikorodu emerged the winner while Master Oke Chukwudi of Sham-el deen Junior Grammar School, Sabo Ikorodu emerged the winner at the secondary school level.

  • Osun’s emerging beautiful landscape

    Osun’s emerging beautiful landscape

Building up on its profile as a peaceful state with regular power supply and adequate security, Osun State inches towards an emerging tourist beauty.

Cities the world over acquire reputation of being visitors’ and tourists’ haven because of their beauties.

Cities are not just beautiful but are products of careful planning by the leaders or rulers of such cities.

Today, people celebrate Dubai. The city, in the heart of the Middle East, rose to prominence less than two decades ago.

That the city of Dubai now plays host to tourists, businessmen and women, world top sporting activities, political, economic and education summits is a testimony to the vision and planning virtuoso of one of the country’s greatest leaders, Sheikh Rashid Makhtoum.

Not quite long ago, we used to hear the phrase: ‘See Paris and die’. It was nothing but the planned beauty of the French capital city.

So also for the outstanding recreational and aesthetic beauty of Orlando’s Disney World in Florida, United States, that attracts millions of tourists yearly from all over the world.

This is perhaps, the motivational force that propelled the government of Osun State to embark on total reconstruction and planning of some of its ancient cities for upward upgrade to modern cities that will attract visitors and tourists alike.

This turnaround of the ancient cities to modern ones is part of massive Urban Renewal projects of the Rauf Aregbesola administration in the last five years.

Nine cities were pencilled down for renewal at a go, a massive and ambitious project indeed for a state such as Osun.

This giant initiative has once been described as the biggest exercise in the whole of Nigeria since United Nations’ Habitat began collaboration with states in Nigeria.

Under this programme, cities in Osun State will witness a significant turnaround in planning, beautification, aesthetics and social facilities.

Today, Osogbo, the Osun State capital, is gradually shedding its ancient toga and metamorphosing into modern city.

To say that the city is undergoing noticeable change in a seamless fashion might be an understatement.

Anybody who has not visited the state for some time now is bound to be taken aback by the consistent change the city has experienced.

One huge area of change is the centre point of the city called Old Garage. The place used to be a hideout for criminals and miscreants. Dirty, unkempt and haphazardly planned!

The city was an eyesore and unattractive to both towns’ people and visitors. But that was in the yesteryear.

The situation has changed dramatically that people, who have not visited the state in the last couple of years now find it difficult to manoeuvre their ways round the city.

It is no longer the dirty Old Garage but newly beautified Nelson Mandela Freedom Park. This recreation arena has astoundingly changed the terrain and landscape of the city.

The usual dark waterlogged, dark alley, bloodshot-eyed hemp-smoking youths which used to be the pictorial views of Old Garage have all disappeared.

Days and nights are no longer easily distinguishable in this city centre any time of the day one visits.

Pleasantly expansive, the whole Freedom Park has been tarred and street-lit. Equipped with a big hall for restaurants, events arena and a water fountain called the Atewogbeja Water Fountain, the park provides fun seekers the opportunity to relax and enjoy the undiluted and pure air. The emerging scenery is fascinating even though it is nearing completion.

The park has also been landscaped with lush green grasses and trees to make it environmentally and healthily friendly.

The place is equally equipped with a garden and playground for people around the area as well as visitors.

Besides, the park now serves as veritable venue for rallies, social and political events in the state – very large, accommodating and well-equipped for such occasions. Indeed, the Freedom Park has a hotel for visitors who want to spend their time entirely within this cosy environment.

It serves for other social purposes such as Motor Park for travellers who did not wish to go in their personal cars.

Now it is easier for them to drive into the park and take tickets for the custody and security of their cars by the park management until they return.

Opposite the park is a motor park where commuters can pick a car to wherever they are going. The makes this a sort of business district while still performing the socio-recreational functions.

Beyond the intended renewal, beautification, recreation, the Freedom Park creatively attracts people and tourists and serve other commercial purposes that are expected to enhance the revenue profile of the state government.

It is this new innovation that the government of Aregbesola intends to extend to other eight cities in the state so that wherever a visitor to the state finds him or herself, he or she feels comfortable and finds where to relax and rest.

This is a project to change the face of Osun State finally; transforming it into a modern city. Not one, not two, nine cities in the state!

  • Rotary donates borehole to Lagos community

Rotary donates borehole to Lagos community

It was prayer answered for residents of four communities-Olusanya, Papa Uku, Agbajowo and Ifesowapo Community Development Association (CDA), in Fanimokun area of Agege Local Government Area when they took delivery of a borehole donated by the Rotary Club of Agege.

The communities, located around Ipaja Road in the Agege suburb, had been living under acute shortage of potable water over the last two decades, with children and nursing mothers, running the risk of being knocked down by reckless motorcyclists or motorists as they move about busy roads, scouting for water in the adjoining neighbourhood.

Handing over the borehole to the Baale-elect of the community, before a crowd of dignitaries among who were the past District Governor for D9110, Dr. Dele Balogun, the Baale-elect Taiwo Oke, and other

community leaders, the President of the club, Mr Kolawole Ojelabi said the project was borne out of a needs assessment conducted by the club for residents of the area.

He said: “When I was coming in as the President of the club, I carried out the assessment of the needs of the people of this area. In this particular community, it was discovered that water is a very critical issue. Incidentally, as we were rounding off our assessment, I witnessed a kid carrying water that was hit by an okada as she made to cross the road into this community. That confirmed to me that this project is a must, to give relief to these people and put a stop to avoidable loss of life while looking for this essential commodity.”

He described the project as one of the six focal areas of Rotary International, under water and sanitation, adding that the club couldn’t embark on the second leg, which is sanitation, because it was usually school-focused.

He said the borehole, which is about 165 feet deep, was partly funded by District Grant and contributions from members of Rotary Club of Agege. He said the project was located in front of the Baale’s house in order to ensure that the community would take ownership of the project, maintain it and to ensure that there is regular supply of electricity with which to pump the water.

He assured that the club will always be available to maintain the borehole, even as he urged the community to set up a community corps to monitor all Rotary projects in the community.

“The next phase of the project is to provide a generator with which to power the borehole so that people would not lack water anytime there is electricity outage in the area.”

The former District Governor Balogun said the club had been active in so many public schools and other public institutions in the area, pledging that more infrastructure would be donated to the communities if proper care is taken of the water project.

“We promise that if they take very good care of this water project, many more projects would come to other communities around here,” Balogun said.

A community leader Bishop Julius Babatunde Olusanya commended Rotary Club of Agege for bringing such a laudable project to the area, adding that the project will, no doubt, serve millions of residents living in the

    area.

He assured that the community will take care of the project and ensure that it is preserved even for generations unborn.

The Chairman of the CDA, Alfa Ayodele Ayuba, popularly called Baba Sala, who spearheaded the location of the project in the area, commended the club for a promise fulfilled. He said the community will not forget the gesture as it would put a stop to their frustration concerning water.

“We know how much we spend on water in these communities and to now think that we can get water free. It is unimaginable. We are very happy, may the Lord continue to keep all members of the club who made this dream possible,” Ayuba said.

Another community leader, Mr Sola Lawal Tijani said: “We are happy that Rotary Club of Agege could give us life in this community, because water is life. We have been mounting pressures on politicians who used to come here to campaign to give us water. But look at a club that has come to provide water for us with no strings attached.

The Baale-elect Taiwo Oke said residents of the community cannot express how happy they were to see that they have water. He said he is happy that the risk associated with looking for water around the neighbou-rhood would drastically reduce and no child would die of accident, which he said was a usual occurrence in the area.

Southwest Report gathered that the four communities of Olusanya, Papa Uku, Agbajowo and Ifesowapo, in Animokun area have no fewer than 3,500 residents and have survived without potable water for ages.

“This is going to be a continuous programme. I must report back to you from time to time; I will also ensure that the town hall meeting we started continues so that we can discuss issues relating to the development of our communities,” he said.

Mr. Oladele further revealed that he has started lobbying the appropriate authority on the need to develop the region’s tourism potential in mineral resources and agriculture.

“We have what it takes to be rich in Oke-ogun, but the neglect by past administrations is responsible for our situation now. But we are gradually getting out of it as efforts are ongoing to develop the potential of Oke-ogun for economic advantage and development.

“I am also working hard to ensure that the abandoned Badagry–Sokoto and some other road and infrastructural projects are completed for the benefit of our people,” he said.

On what informed the distribution of the empowerment materials, the former youth leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State said: “We consider the needs of our people before making provision for the materials. We do not give to only APC members. Members of other political parties and security agencies are also benefiting.”
