Tragic death of policeman hours to promotion

His family was eagerly waiting to usher in the New Year because of the good tiding it will bring for its breadwinner. His promotion to inspector was to take effect January 1. But three hours to the New Year, Sergeant sunday Clement, 41, was knocked down by a commercial motorcyclist and he died, BISI OLADELE reports.

All had been set for the New Year celebration. Members of Sergeant Sunday Clement’s family were in high spirits for the double joy which January 1, had in stock for them. It was to be the witness of a New Year and the day the promotion of his bread winner to inspector would have taken effect. But it was not to be.

The late Clement, 41, was a Sergeant with the Highway Patrol in Akinyele Police Division, Ibadan the Oyo State capital. He was one of the drivers in the unit.

His team went on duty on Ijaye/Iseyin Road on the eve of the New Year to wrap up the year when a commercial motorcyclist allegedly knocked him down while he was crossing the road. Within one-and-a-half hours of the accident, Sunday died, terminating the double joy awaiting him and his household last January 1.

His widow, Bola, in an emotional recall of how her heartthrob died on New Year’s eve, said she was at the middle of a church service to usher in the New Year when her phone rang repeatedly. The repeated calls forced her to excuse herself from the church to return the call to her husband’s telephone line that had been calling.

But she was greeted by a strange voice that declared: “This is not your husband. I am his boss. Your husband had an accident a while ago and we have rushed him to a private hospital in Akinyele. Please come over here.”

She continued: “After receiving the call, I didn’t know what to do. I invited one of my friends in the church to accompany me to the hospital. On getting to the hospital, the doctor told me that he had internal bleeding; having fallen on his occiput. The injury on the occiput was deep but the doctor plastered it after applying treatment. He advised us to take him to the University College Hospital (UCH).

“When we got to UCH, they admitted him immediately. The doctors told me that he needed oxygen. Hence, they asked me to go and look for a large amount of money. Then, I came home reluctantly, thinking of the sad incident and where to get such huge amount of money.

“I arrived at home at 1:00 a.m. When I called again, they told me he was responding to treatment.”

But at noon of January 1, Mrs Sunday said her pastor, accompanied by some others, visited her to break the sad news that her husband was dead. They revealed that he actually died before the break of the New Year.

According to her, his colleagues explained to her that her husband initially declined to join them for the duty that evening but later changed his mind to perform the last duty in 2015.

On arriving at the spot where the team operated, they recalled that Mr Sunday led the prayer for the entire team and their operation that night.

“A few minutes later, he crossed the road to the other side to urinate when an oncoming commercial motorcyclist (popularly called okada), knocked him down. It was between 8:00 and 8:00 p.m.” she said.

She revealed that the motorcyclist was a 17-year-old who could not offer anything. He has since been detained.

On what the Oyo State Police Command was doing on the matter, Mrs Sunday said the command had been taking all necessary steps to give him a befitting burial and process his benefits for dying in the course of discharging his duties.

Mrs Sunday described her husband of 13 years as a father to her, their children and his siblings.

“I can’t forget him. He took our welfare (our children and I) very seriously. He was a father, mother-everything to me. I will miss his immense understanding, patience and care. He showed understanding very well,” she said.

Also recalling his brother’s death, Sunday’s younger brother, Mr Godwin Namba-Clement, said it still seems like a dream.

According to him, a friend called him on telephone from Ibadan on January 1 to inform him of his elder brother’s death which he dismissed because it sounded impossible for death to come so suddenly that way. Godwin lives with their parents in their home town, Kachia, Kaduna State.

He said: “On New Year day, after returning from church, a friend called me from Ibadan and told me Sunday was dead. I thought it was a joke. Then, I called my brother’s wife and she confirmed it. I had to travel to Ibadan immediately. His colleagues took me to the scene of the incident. It is still unbelievable.”

Sunday completed his promotion course in September, last year after which he was elevated to the higher rank of Police Inspector. The promotion took effect on January 1, 2016.

Sunday is survived by wife and three children.

Monarch pledges peace, development at Erijiyan Day

The Olohan of Erijiyan Ekiti in Ekiti State, Oba Omosebi Adegoroye Agunsoye II, has promised that his reign would usher in peace and rapid socio-economic development in his domain.

He spoke at the Erijiyan Day celebration. The event was the first since the king’s installation some months ago.

The monarch thanked the indigenes at home and in the Diaspora for their co-operation and contributions to the growth and development of the community. He urged them to do more, saying in unity, the town would achieve greater development.

He challenged his subjects to come home and participate in communal activities that could attract investors to establish companies in the town. He said if investors come with their businesses into the town, it would be beneficial to the indigenes.

“Erijiyan is your Jerusalem and must be developed,” he said.

Oba Adegoroye appealed to the Ekiti State Government to assist in tackling the challenges which the community is experiencing. He listed these as bad roads, dilapidated schools, lack of electricity, youth unemployment and lack of women empowerment programme, among others.

The carnival-like event provided the indigenes the opportunity to mark the first coronation anniversary for the monarch who was installed on July 15, last year as well as an opportunity to raise funds for various developmental projects of the community, which included renovation and extension of the monarch’s palace.

Oba Adegoroye succeeded the late Oba Olufemi Alade, who died in 2012.

The event was well-attended by the sons and daughters, who danced to the rhythm emanating from different traditional dance drums such as bata, agere, gangan, agogo and sekere.

The Chiefs, elderly men and women, market men and women and youths later assembled in groups to pay homage and perform some traditional rites to the king.

Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has reiterated his commitment to partner with the monarch not only in infrastructural developmemt but also in sustaining the peaceful co-existence in the town.

Governor Fayose, who was represented by the Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Hon. Governor Fayose reiterated the commitment of his administration to partner with communities in areas of development and provision of basic amenities that would enhance their living standard.

He pledged that his government would continue in its stride to ensure better lives for the people.

The Chairman, Erijiyan Day Planning Committee, Mr Dare Oluwatayo, expressed appreciation to government officials, guests, clubs and societies for their presence and contributions to the town’s development projects, urging the indigenes to continue to support the monarch in his efforts to take the community to a greater height.

  • ‘How to achieve steady fuel supply’

‘How to achieve steady fuel supply’

The Independent Petroleum Marketers’ Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), has urged the Federal Government to support the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation’s (NNPC’s) decision to supply petrol to IPMAN members to stem scarcity.

Last month, as part of its intervention measures to stem fuel scarcity, resumed supply to members of IPMAN. The Corporation’s decision led to massive truck out of premium motor spirit (PMS) to members of IPMAN, which helped to check exploitation of motorists by scrupulous marketers during the Yuletide season.

IPMAN’s National Operation Controller Comrade Mike Osatuyi told Southwest Report that but for NNPC’s massive supply of petrol to its members in December to address the scarcity across the country, the price could have been astronomical. He said over 300 trucks of PMS were supplied by NNPC last December 24 last year, making it possible for Nigerians to access fuel without much stress.

Osatuyi said if the Corporation continues to partner with members of IPMAN, the country will not witness fuel scarcity again because members of the association own 84 per cent of the total filling stations in the nation.

“Members of IPMAN own and control about 84 per cent of the retail outlets in this country. So, now the government is ready to work with us, we too are ready to work with them. If they give us the fuel, we will sell it. NNPC can only supply 52 per cent of our national need. I understand and have confirmed that they have stepped up importation to bridge the gap. I believe they will sustain the intervention. If they sustain it, we are ready to sell to the public at government’s approved price.”

Osatuyi, who also owns retail outlets, stated that one of his filling stations, Nyce Petroleum located at Akute, Ogun State, benefited from the NNPC’s intervention measure. He said his filling station got two trucks of 40,000 litres and 36,000 litres, making a total 76,000 litres of petrol.

He said their members across the country benefitted from the intervention, adding that NNPC’s decision, if sustained, would go a long way in ending fuel scarcity and selling of petrol above government’s approved pump price. He assured that his station and those of other members of IPMAN would continue to comply with government’s directive and ensure a 24-hour sale so that motorists and commuters would not suffer.

He said: “Our members want to thank the Federal Government for what it is doing in terms of PMS intervention scheme. You can see that the government is bringing petrol to dealers to sell at official price and we are doing that. They brought two trucks to my station. This is unbelievable. We have never seen this before. I want NNPC/PPMC (Pipeline and Product Marketing Company) to continue and sustain it. We at IPMAN can assure the government that we will support them now they have agreed to partner with us. We will not fail them. This is for the benefit of the masses, which the government of President Muhammadu Buhari stands for.”

Osatuyi, however, noted that the ultimate thing for the government to do is to deregulate the downstream sector.

He said since former President Olusegun Obasanjo deregulated diesel about 14 years ago, nobody has heard anything about diesel scarcity. If petrol is deregulated, we will have various prices of marginal differences but fuel must be available.

He said sharp practices are carried out by some marketers because the product is regulated and inadequate, noting that with deregulation, motorists will avoid buying from retail outlets that don’t operate transparently.

During last year’s fuel scarcity, some marketers sold petrol between N120 and N150 per litre as against N87 depending on the part of the country. Besides, some of these marketers sold with under-dispensing pumps despite the high price.

It is not only IPMAN that calls for deregulation of the price of PMS, the Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) and other dealers as well as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) want the price deregulated. The IMF recommended an automatic price change mechanism that will occur slowly.

The NNPC has also started price modulation, which will ensure slow price decrease or increase depending on the price of crude at the international market.

  • APC chieftain seeks more funds for councils

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State, Prince Ayodeji Abass-Aleshinloye, has called for a reversal of allocation sharing formula in favour of local governments in Nigeria.

Abass-Aleshinloye made the call while featuring on a radio and television programme in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The APC chieftain, who is a former chairman, Oluyole Local Government of Oyo State, faulted the current allocation sharing formula which gives the lowest percentage to the 774 local governments in Nigeria, stressing that it renders the councils incapable of pursuing policies and projects that stimulate growth at the grassroots.

According to him, local governments are the closest to the people, meaning that they require more funds to address issues in communities that make the entire nation.

Explaining the socio-economic reasons for mass hunger, unemployment and impoverishment of Nigerians, especially at the grassroots level, the former council chief identified lack of adequate fund and autonomy for inability of local councils to measure up to the expectations of the people for optimal service delivery.

“A situation as it is now in the country that gives local council as the tier of government closest to the people the least and meager revenue allocation does not augur well for democracy and development except the allocation formula is reversed to give local governments the highest allocation,” Abass-Aleshinloye said.

Prince Aleshinloye also posited that agriculture as the basic industry at the grassroots level should be encouraged, supported and subsidised to make it attractive and as a solution for youth employment, food security and poverty eradication in the country.

He said: “With the collapse of oil price in global market and the attendant dwindling national earnings from oil and gas, Nigeria has no choice than to embrace agriculture as a solution to poverty, hunger, unemployment and dwindling national income as the most realistic bailout. With this, local governments should be the central focus of revivi-ng agriculture and rural economy.”

He, therefore, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his emphasis on agriculture as the cardinal focus of his administration. He also appealed to Nigerians to support the present administration.

  • Residents beg Ambode to repair their roads

Residents beg Ambode to repair their roads

An appeal has been made to the Lagos State Government to include the Adewale Adegun–Isale Haruna Road, in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area, in its priority list of roads to be rehabilitated this year.

The Chairman of Ifako Harmony Estate Community Development Association (IHECDA) Mr Tunde Akinwumi made the appeal while taking reporters round the two roads rehabilitated by the Community Development Association (CDA).

He said the Adewale Adegun Road, which traversed Karaole Estate is critical because it links with Isale Haruna and could take traffic off the newly expanded College Road for motorists going to Ogba in Ojodu Local Council Development Area (LCDA).

He said former Governor Babatunde Fashola, in July last year, directed Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC), to rehabilitate the road, wondering why the order was not obeyed.

He said his CDA, in conjunction with Karaole CDA had written to Governor Akinwumi Ambode concerning the development, but nothing has been forthcoming.

He said: “The Adewale Adegun Road falls squarely within the purview of the mandate of the state government because it would lead to Isale Haruna and through it to another council area, Ojodu LCDA.

Sometime in July last year, when Governor Babatunde Fashola paid a condolence visit to the widow of our former Chairman Kunle Alex Fadipe, he had directed the Public Works Corporation to work on the road and PWC men came, but soon abandoned the project. We have written to the present governor to revisit the road and we hope it would be given priority in this year’s budget.”

Akinwumi said the IHECDA, through contributions and levies by residents, spent about N4 million in rehabilitating two major roads–the first being Sowemimo Street (which was a 140 square metres stretch) shared

with the neighbouring Karaole Estate and Harmony Drive (490 square metres long), within Harmony Estate.

According to him, while Sowemimo Street cost the CDA N2.215 million, rehabilitation of Harmony Drive cost N1.750 million.

Stating why the CDA took the step in mitigating further deterioration of the roads, Akinwumi, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) said: “We decided to take our destiny in our hands after repeated attempts to get the support of the state and local governments failed. Based on recommendation of some

experts, we decided to rehabilitate some strategic roads that were common to us. So, we embarked on total rehabilitation of the Sowemimo Street which was in Karaole Estate, and when we finished that, we

moved into our estate, where we decided to complete the Harmony Drive from where a resident, who had donated the road several years ago, left it off. We completed the entire stretch of the road.”

He said the CDA, under his leadership, intend to ensure that all inner roads within the estate is tarred in the next two years, urging residents to continue to support the good works of members of the executive through prompt payments of their levies and dues.

“As far as we are concerned, we would continue to spend whatever money we got judiciously to advance the cause of the estate,” he further stated.

Akinwumi, therefore, urged politicians to ensure that they deliver services to the people on whose mandate they rose to position of authority. People should have the value for the taxes and levies they are paying to the government, he said.

A resident of the estate, Mr Olubusi Odole described the road project as “unimaginable”. He said several times in the past, he had bemoaned his luck, as he usually patronises the mechanics for repairs, adding that with the road repaired, that would reduce.

Another resident, Mr Kunle Fadipe praised the CDA leadership for taking the estate to a new high. His successful execution of the road project without any hitch and inconvenience is a testimony to the power of leadership and integrity.

A trader who identified herself as Mummy Tomiwa said she was particularly pleased with the completion of rehabilitation work on the Harmony Drive, adding that the topography of the area had badly damaged the earth road before the executive moved in. She further said that with the repair, the pains and worries of residents living in the area have largely been abated.

  • Training for technical institutions

    Training for technical institutions

A group of professionals, the Eko Heritage, through the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Board, has embarked on skills acquisition training for technical and vocational institutions.

The Executive Secretary, Lagos State Technical and Vocational Board, Mr. Olawunmi Gasper said Lagos State is training and re-training brick-layers, furniture makers, tailors, welders, electricians, computer repairers, handsets repairers and motor mechanics, among others.

“We are re-training and upgrading them,” he said.

This, he said, was to ensure that all technical and vocational institutions in Lagos State meet international standard and be able to compete favourably with their foreign counterparts in technical fields.

Gasper revealed that the group was partnering with over 15 companies for the training. Based on the prescribed standard, he said, the companies have promised to absorb and employ the trainees immediately after their education, adding that the training is being monitored by the respective companies or industries.

Speaking on the theme “Youth Bulge and Restiveness in Lagos: Technical and Vocational Skill to the Rescue”, Mr. Gasper, who was represented by the Skills Development Officer, Adebisi Abubakar said the training would enable our artisans to measure up to standard in whatever they do; instead of bringing artisans from the Republic of Benin and other parts of West African countries to carry out technical works in the country.

He also said the board has embarked on what it called modern apprenticeship training programme (MATP) to re-train the graduates for a period of one year, especially those who studied Economics, History and Geography. “When most graduates are out of school, they don’t have anything to do. For this reason, they are going on hand training. They would be posted to different industries and we have supervisors that would train them on industrial attachment,” he said.

He, however, stressed the need for people to understand the difference between paper qualification and field qualification, adding that we are only after the national vocational qualification (NVQ).

“Within the next five years, the state would be able to operate on this system whereby we are not after paper qualification, but after the NVQ1”, he added.

Chairman on the association, Femi Scott, said the group was a purposeful, dynamic and selfless organisation which is known for people-oriented programmes.

Being one of the fast-growing socio-progressive organisations in the state, Scott said the group had conducted the establishment of Eko Trumpet Newspaper, Census Awareness Campaign in partnership with The National Orientation Agency (NOA), periodic visit to the motherless babies’ homes and primary health care centres; in partnership with the Committee on Dental Health Education, among others.

He said the group was partnering with the government, non-governmental agencies as well as eminent personalities in moving the state forward.

“I want to sincerely thank the donors of this pre-fabricated building for deeming it fit to bring another innovative and positive change to Government College, Ibadan. “My prayer for you is that you will be blessed beyond human comprehension “.

Senator Kwankwaso also expressed delight to be part of the change mantra which the donors have brought about in the school.

He expressed his love for education, saying it is the currency for the future.

Senator Kwakwanso, who also congratulated the principal , staff , students and management of GCI on the new pre-fabricated building recalled that from 1999-2003 and 2011-2015 when he served as governor of Kano State, he did all he could to promote education.

“This will provide solution to the issue of mass accommodation problem. It’s the first of its kind in Africa in providing cost-effective and viable products. The company remains committed to its obligations to assist government in bridging the gap in providing affordable houses in Nigeria,” Mr. Okagbue said.

The elated Principal of GCI, Mr. Sola Oladele said he was so excited with the development, adding that before now, the state of accommodation in the school was such that grieves everyone who has passed through GCI.

His words: “I am so happy to be the Principal of the best college in Africa and we need to give glory to Almighty God for the wonderful gift. I sincerely thank the 65-71 set of the school for their contributions to the development of the school. “Before now, we used to weep, but today, they have brought joy to the school. I am so proud of the old boys because all the fantastic projects in the school were carried out by them.”

Chief Jolaoso noted that the concept of jubilee celebration in the association began some seven years ago when it was established as a tradition among the old boys to celebrate 50 years of the school.

While expressing profound gratitude to Vita Foam Nigeria PLC for the gesture, Chief Jolaoso noted that “in GCI, we do experience acute shortage of accommodation; with dilapidated structures all over the school. As a result, he said, the school principal lives outside the college.”

But with the donation of the pre-fabricated building, the principal can now move into the three bedroom building, while the remaining one will serve as office for the association.”

Alhaja Bankole, who gave the advice during her 70th birthday anniversary in Lagos, said training the young ones in the fear of God will give the parents peace of mind and bring delight into their lives when they are old.

According to her, parents who train their children in accordance to the norms of the society are laying strong foundation for the future of the family.

She said: “I thank God for all He has done in my life and for the power, wisdom and knowledge given unto me to train my children and for them to adhere to my training instructions. It is an epitome of good parenting when parents train and discipline their children at tender age.”

She regretted the current trend when many parents do not deem it fit to appreciate what God has done in their lives.

The event was well attended by politicians, business associates, captains of industries as well as families and well-wishers across the country.

  • Eze Ndigbo hails Ambode

    Eze Ndigbo hails Ambode

Eze Ndigbo of Lagos State, Christian Uchechukwu Nwachukwu has praised Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for his people-oriented policies and programmes.

Eze Nwachukwu spoke after Ambode’s inspection of construction work on Ago Palace Way in Okota.

During the inspection, Ambode expressed dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work on road. He said the construction had taken so long, warning the contractor that his administration would not tolerate further delay in completing the job.

“You ought to have known the importance of this road. Delay in its completion further compounds the pains and anguish the people go through while plying the road. The road is so strategic because it traverses FESTAC Town, Amuwo-Odofin to Ojo Local Government Area, Isolo Local Council Development Area via Ejigbo to Alimosho Local Government Area and other areas. You have up to the first quarter of 2016 to deliver the road, unfailingly,” Ambode said.

Responding, the General Manager of China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation Limited (CCECC) the construction firm handling the project, Mr. Li Bing promised that the company would expedite action on the work in order to meet Ambode’s deadline.

“We promise to work hard in order to complete the work on time. We will not fail you. We will be accelerating the work in order to complete it before the end of first quarter of the year. We hope we can get more support from the residents,” he said..

Eze Nwachukwu noted that Governor Ambode’s action which has put the contractor handling the project on toes indicates that he has the welfare of the masses at heart, even as he said that Lagosians always have the luck of being governed not only by governors who are committed to providing good governance to them but also governors who are humane such as former Governor Ahmed Bola Tinubu, Ex-Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) who is currently the Minister of Works, Power and Housing and Governor Ambode.

He also said if the road is completed as directed by Governor Ambode, residents of the area would be very grateful to him as that will show that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is working towards realising its promises to the people.

Eze Nwachukwu thanked the Commissioner for Works, Mr. Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson for pressurising the contractor to complete the road so as to ameliorate the suffering the residents of the area have been experiencing for a long time now.
