LASPA charges operators of hospitality business, event centres on parking regulations

As part of efforts to mitigate traffic congestion on Lagos roads and further promote a model parking culture, the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA), has concluded arrangements to commence enforcement on event centres, hotels and night clubs across the State without valid parking permit.

The General Manager, LASPA, Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, gave the hint on Monday, stressing that it is mandatory for all event centres, hotels and night clubs operating in Lagos State to ensure compliance with the State Parking Regulations and obtain the necessary parking permit.

Adelabu noted that part of the provisions of the Lagos State Parking Authority laws is that all business/service providers and operators in the hospitality industry should register with LASPA and obtain a valid parking permit for effective parking control and management of traffic.

While stressing that LASPA, has held various engagements with the management of the different associations in charge of hotels, night clubs and event centres in Lagos State, to sensitise them on the need to comply with the state parking regulations, she however, informed that many of them are still defaulting.

She urged all owners and operators of hotels, night clubs and event centres, to take this warning as a final notice to ensure full compliance as the Authority will soon commence a comprehensive enforcement on defaulters of the State Parking

    Regulations.

Adelabu further emphasized that LASPA will not tolerate non-compliance with any of the parking regulations adding, that any facility that continues to operate without a valid parking permit will be sanctioned.

    • …urges youths to embrace skills

The Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) hosted the 2025 edition of Lagos Youth Skills Day during the week in Ikeja, Lagos, bringing together students, private sector leaders, and education stakeholders in a shared push to promote technical and vocational education among young Nigerians.

Coordinated by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Technical and Vocational Education, Comrade Giwa Murtala Moore, the event featured inspiring testimonials and renewed calls for youth empowerment through hands-on skills acquisition.

A major highlight was the keynote address by Hon. Dr. Saheed Mosadoluwa Abdullahi, CEO of Harmony Garden and Estate Development Ltd, who shared his inspiring journey from working as a bricklayer to becoming a successful real estate entrepreneur.

His story resonated deeply with the audience, as he urged youths to embrace vocational training as a viable path to financial freedom and career growth.

“Skills change lives,” Dr. Mosadoluwa declared, noting that technical expertise laid the foundation for his achievements, including projects like the acclaimed Lekki Aviation Town Estate developed by his firm, Harmony Gardens.

In recognition of his dedication to youth development and technical education, LASTVEB presented him with an Award of Recognition.

The award acknowledged his ongoing support for skills-based mentorship and empowerment initiatives.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Mosadoluwa expressed gratitude for the honour and pledged continued support for youth-focused initiatives.

I never threatened Obi, says Okpebholo

    • Restriction order undemocratic, unacceptable, declares ADC

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has denied issuing any threat to Anambra State former governor, Peter Obi.

He said he only stressed the need for high-profile individuals, particularly politically-exposed p ersons, to notify and seek security clearance from him before embarking on any public engagement within the state.

The Edo governor said it was his constitutional responsibility to safeguard the lives and property of residents and visitors alike.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, Okpebholo said his duty included ensuring adequate security measures were put in place during high-profile visits or events that might attract large crowd or media attention.

He said when such protocols were ignored; they created serious security vulnerabilities not only for the visitor, but also for citizens who might be caught in avoidable threats.

The statement said: “Governor Okpebholo’s position is particularly relevant in light of the rising attacks and abductions of religious leaders, especially Catholic priests and Christian clerics.

“Edo State has witnessed its share of these tragic incidents, including the abduction of seminarians and killing of clergy in recent years. Public donations made to churches, hospitals, or other faith-based institutions, while noble in intent, must be approached with caution and in full consultation with the appropriate security channels, to avoid exposing these institutions and their leaders to further danger.

“The governor’s comments on the need for discretion in public giving are rooted in security intelligence and moral responsibility.

“Furthermore, the governor’s concerns should not be twisted for political mileage by individuals seeking to score cheap points. The state government will not fold its arms and allow politically- motivated activities to endanger lives. We expect leaders, no matter how highly placed, to align with the protocols and security realities of the areas they visit.

“Governor Okpebholo is committed to a safe and inclusive Edo State for all. His administration is working to address the insecurity it inherited, and his call for coordination and orderliness should be seen as a measure of responsible governance, not hostility.

‘’Edo State Government will continue to welcome well-meaning Nigerians, provided appropriate security and procedural protocols are respected.’’

African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned the restriction order placed on the 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party, Peter Obi, describing it as unacceptable.

ADC’s National Spokesperson, Mallam Bolaji Abdulahi, said this yesterday in Abuja during a news conference.

He said that the pronouncements credited to Governor Monday Okpebholo that Obi or opposition leaders were not welcome in their state was undemocratic.

“This is not democratic and it’s a very dangerous pattern. Nigeria is a free country, and every citizen of Nigeria has the right to go anywhere in this country.

“We don’t need a visa in our country. We don’t need anybody’s permission to go to any part of our country,” he said.

Abdullahi stated that ADC believed that it could only get worse, if it’s not nipped in the bud.

“We in ADC are alarmed; we are worried that we have not even started big political activities.

“We have not started campaigns and already our governors are saying that some leaders of our party are not welcome in their states,” he said.

According to him, no state belongs to any governor but the people, noting: “We will go  anywhere we want in Nigeria. Nigeria is a free country.’’

    • Demand justice for victims

Scores of youths and indigenes of Ondo town yesterday trooped to the streets to stage a peaceful protest over the rising wave of cultism, drug abuse, violence and insecurity pervading the community.

The protest, held across major streets of the town, led by the President of Ondo Kingdom Youth Forum, Mr Kayode Folayegun, was in response to the rising spate of cult-related killings and clashes in the town.

The youth decried the activities of the proscribed cults, saying their activities had been threatening the peace of the community.

Folayegun lamented the activities of the cults, demanding that urgent actions must be put in place to end violence.

Calling for justice for slain youths that have fallen victims of the activities of the cults, he said people would not tolerate the continued silence of the government over the killings.

“We can no longer fold our arms while our fellow youths are being murdered in cold blood. There must be consequences for these heinous crimes. Over 48 persons have died of cult-related killings and clashes,” Folayegun said.

Olaitan Aseyege, a youth leader in the town, said cult-related activities and killings in the community had claimed  lives.

Osun 2026: Why voters should reject Adeleke, PDP, by NIWA boss

    • ‘People will not regret returning APC to power’

The Managing Director of National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Asiwaju Bola Oyebamiji, has urged Osun State residents not to return Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or Governor Ademola Adeleke to power in the August 7, 2026 governorship election.

He berated the PDP-led administration for allegedly mismanaging N1trillion of the federal allocation accruing to the state in the last 30 months.

Oyebamiji, a leading governorship aspirant in the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday during his continued state-wide consultation held at Ife-South and Ife-North local governments, said Osun State had been receiving over 300 per cent increased allocation, compared to what was received during the tenure of former Governor Gboyega Oyetola, yet there was no corresponding development in the state.

A chieftain of the APC, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has said the electorate would not regret returning the party to power in the August 8, 2026, governorship election.

He said this during a consultation visit by one of the party’s aspirants, Oyebamiji, to Obokun Local Government.

He said the party is prepared to meet the expectations of the electorate based on the needs assessment of the previous administration, as documented by the civic engagement agency.

Oyintiloye, who served as a Special Adviser to former Governor Oyetola, in the Ministry of Information and Civic Orientation, led the “Osun Civic Engagement” the agency that was established by the former governor to bridge the gap between the people and government, especially in the area of policy formulation.

He said that this was to assist the government in responding quickly to people’s needs.

Speaking further at the event attended by many bigwigs of the party in Obokun Local Government and beyond yesterday, he urged the electorate to support the party during the election.

“The blueprint to hit the ground running is already documented towards the expiration of the Oyetola’s administration and our incoming governor will definitely have a solid start with that document and his other initiatives that are already being fine-tuned”, he said.

He said the affairs of the state had been run aground under the current government, as manifested in the poor funding of education, health, infrastructure and key sectors in the state.

He said: ‘’Today, Osun is earning more than 300 per cent of what it used to get and everyone can attest that what is on ground is not commensurate with the massive earning. Osun has received close to N1trillion in the last 30 months of Governor Adeleke, yet the state has not been able to recruit teachers and health workers to improve the well-being of the citizens.”

The NIWA boss implored members of the APC to mobilise people for the Continuous Voter Registration and collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as soon as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) begins registration and PVC distribution.

APC leaders including former member, Osun State House of Assembly, Rufus Ajibodu, ex-Commissioner for Education, Folorunso Bamisayemi and Chairman of APC Local Government Chairmen, Elder Rufus Awotidoye, declared support for Oyebamiji.

Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, an ex-lawmaker, during the consultation by Oyebamiji at the weekend, held in Obokun, said the electorate in Osun State would not regret returning APC to power in 2026.

He said the party was prepared to meet the expectations of the electorate.

Lawyer kicks as Aiyedatiwa seeks constitutional backing for 33 LCDAs

The move by Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to secure constitutional backing for the 33 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) has again been rejected.

The latest development came as a lawyer, Tolu Babaleye, represented by a legal firm, kicked against Aiyedatiwa’s position to have legal backing for the 33 LCDAs.

The governor had last Friday at the public hearing of the House of Representatives Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, held in Akure, appealed to the Committee on the Constitution Amendment to recommend the inclusion of newly-created LCDAs in the proposed constitution.

Governor Aiyedatiwa said it was the interest of the government and people of the state that additional local governments be created in the state, citing how Lagos State LCDAs were being proposed for inclusion in the constitution as full-fledged local governments.

“In Ondo State, we have functional 33 LCDAs duly created by the state government. We strongly advocate that the proposed bill be expanded and these 33 LCDAs in Ondo State be recognised as full-fledged local governments in the First Schedule of the Constitution,” he told the committee.

Recall that the House of Assembly had passed the bill for the creation of 33 additional councils to co-exist with the 18 local governments of the state on August 15, 2023.

In September 2023, former Governor Rotimi Akeredolu signed the bill into law, a day after his return from three months medical leave – but the decision sparked crisis, with some communities and the opposition parties in the state rejecting the development, prompting legal tussle.

The Akure Division of the High Court in the state had in June 2024 nullified the creation of the additional 33 LCDAs.

Justice Adegboyega Adebusoye of the State High Court, who gave the verdict, had held that it was illegal for a governor (the late Akeredolu) to sign a law outside the state he or she governed.

Adebusuoye said the LG Creation Law 2023, which birthed the 33 LCDAs, stood nullified because the late Akeredolu signed the law in Ibadan, Oyo State, and not on Ondo soil.

But addressing reporters at the weekend, Babaleye, represented by the legal firm through a counsel, Beckiston Ataine, accused the state government led by Aiyedatiwa of attempting to bypass the court’s ruling by lobbying members of the National Assembly for the inclusion of the 33 LCDAs in Nigeria’s Constitution.

He described the LCDAs as “legally non-existent, as dead as fried plantains,” emphasising that the state’s continued recognition of the councils flouts the rule of law.

Ataine, who also represented the aggrieved residents of Akoko land, underscored the High Court’s landmark judgment that declared the creation of the 33 LCDAs illegal, null and void.

The lawyer recalls how the High Court had also ruled that the process for the creation of the 33 LCDAs was lopsided, disproportionately marginalising communities, particularly in Akoko land, in favour of others.

“The legal battle began when Akoko land residents, feeling short-changed by the uneven distribution of the LCDAs, sought redress in court.

“However, the state government’s response has been less than forthcoming. Although it filed an appeal against the judgment, no substantial progress has been made,” he said.

The law firm revealed that “the government failed to submit its brief of argument after reluctantly transmitting appeal records out of time, suggesting the appeal was merely a ploy to delay the enforcement of the court’s decision.

“Further compounding the issue, the state government applied for a stay of execution, a move Ataine dismissed as futile since declarative judgments, like the one nullifying the LCDAs, cannot be stayed under Nigerian law.

“The government’s actions show a blatant disregard for the judiciary,” Ataine said, expressing dismay that ‘’the state has continued to treat the LCDAs as legitimate entities, allocating resources and administrative functions to them despite their nullification. We are not here to clash with the government but to ensure justice prevails.”

He urged the people of Akoko to remain peaceful while the firm takes steps to formally advise the National Assembly on the legal status of the LCDAs.

“The judgment of the Ondo State High Court remains sacrosanct, and we call on the state government to respect it in the interest of harmony and fairness.”

He said: “I travelled in from Abuja last Wednesday. I decided to come by road to have a feeling of what the people are feeling. I discovered that the road is very bad. “When I alighted from my car to view the portions, some of the drivers and other road users told me they have been sleeping there for five, six days to one week, sleeping on the floor with mosquitoes biting them. Some of them are on business trips carrying goods; some are even carrying perishable goods. They cannot deliver them, and they cannot reunite with their families.

“Moved by the ugly situation, I promised to fix the road so that it can be accessible for them, and it is the promise I have come to fulfil today. We are not in government, but just to help road users in our own little way,” he said.

#JusticeforCoastalRoad: Protesters demand compensation for demolition victims

A coalition of protesters under the banner of the Coalition of Concerned Individuals staged a peaceful demonstration in Lagos, demanding fair and adequate compensation for property owners affected by the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.

The protest, held on Thursday, July 17, drew attention to the plight of residents and business owners whose properties were demolished to make way for the multi-billion-naira infrastructure initiative.

Protesters decried the lack of transparency, insufficient compensation, and what they described as government indifference to the human cost of the project.

Speaking during the protest, the Coalition’s spokesperson, Mr. Shina Loremika, criticised the government’s handling of the demolitions, accusing it of flouting due process and dispossessing citizens without adequate restitution.

“The government cannot continue to treat people like statistics. You cannot take over private property without proper compensation. It is unjust, it is unconstitutional, and it must be addressed,” Loremika stated.

The Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, designed to connect multiple southern states via a strategic coastal route, has faced mounting criticism for how demolitions have been carried out.

Civil society organisations and community members have pointed to widespread displacement and financial losses.

Earlier protests had erupted in the Okun-Ajah area of Lagos, where residents and business owners accused the government of forcibly evicting people without proper dialogue or compensation mechanisms in place.

As legal battles continue in court, affected individuals and rights groups insist they will not back down until the government offers justice and relief to those impacted.

The #JusticeForCoastalRoad campaign has since gained traction online, with thousands of Nigerians calling for accountability, transparency, and a more humane approach to national development.
