  • Meet ruling house to produce next Awujale of Ijebuland

Meet ruling house to produce next Awujale of Ijebuland

The selection of the next Awujale will follow the rotational system among four ruling Houses as provided by the governing chieftaincy legal instruments.

There are 13 kingmakers recognised by the chieftaincy declarations.

The process follows the Western State Chieftaincy Declarations issued under Section 4(2) of the Chiefs Law of 1957, establishing the customary law regulating the selection of the Awujale of Ijebuland chieftaincy.

Section 1 of the declarations established the four ruling houses entitled to produce the Awujale as Gbelegbuwa, Anikinaiya, Fusengbuwa, and Fidipote.

The order is as follows: Anikinaiya, Fusengbuwa, Fidipote, and Gbelegbuwa, which the declarations described as “the last ruling house”.

The Fusegbuwa Ruling House is expected to produce the next Awujale of Ijebuland in November 2025, The Nation has learnt.

Fusengbuwa is next to Anikinaiya from where the  Awujale of the Ijebu Kingdom, Oba Sikiru Adetona that just passed away hailed from.

Oba Adetona reigned for 65 years, from his installation on April 2, 1960, until his passing on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

Born on May 10, 1934, Oba Adetona was a prominent member of the Royal House of Anikinaiya and became one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning monarchs.

Oba Adetona, the 55th Awujale, died at 91. The deceased traditional ruler, who is the longest-reigning king of the Ijebu kingdom was buried according to Islamic rites on Monday at his Igbeba residence.

In January 2022, Governor Dapo Abiodun signed the “Obas, Chiefs, Council of Obas and Traditional Council Law of Ogun State 2021” during a ceremony at the Awujale’s palace in Ijebu-Ode.

The law includes a provision that preserves and protects the fundamental right of traditional rulers to be installed and buried according to their religious beliefs or convictions. This means that a Christian or Muslim traditional ruler in Ogun State may now legally choose a religious burial in line with their faith in addition to any required traditional rites

For the next Awujale, the candidate must be a male from the next ruling house in the line of succession, according to the chieftaincy declarations.

The process begins at a family meeting of the ruling house whose turn it is to produce the Awujale. It then progresses to the Odis and finally to the kingmakers.

It entails the ruling house nominating “at a family meeting to be summoned by the family head or family heads a candidate or candidates for the chieftaincy to be presented by the family head or family heads to the Odis.”

The Odi class has two members – the Ogbeni-Odi-Imesi of Ijebu-Ode and the Ekeji-Odi-Iletu of Ijebu-Ode.

The Osugbo class has just one member – the Oliwo of Ijebu-Ode

Lastly, the remaining four kingmakers belong to the Pampa class, who are the Agbon of Ijebu-ode, the Kakanfo of Ijebu-Ode, the Lapoekun of Ijebu-Ode and the Balogun of Ijebu-Ode.

LG crisis: Adeleke wept for 15 minutes in our meeting — Osun commissioner

Amid the deepening crisis surrounding control of local governments in Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke reportedly broke down in tears during a cabinet meeting held last weekend.

According to Hon. Dipo Eluwole, the state’s Commissioner for Education, the governor wept uncontrollably for about fifteen minutes and was unable to begin the meeting until he was consoled.

Eluwole made this revelation while speaking at a Digital Literacy Training for teachers in Ede, Osun State.

The Nation recalls that tension erupted after the Appeal Court reinstated sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) council executives, a decision the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) strongly opposed.

The fallout has led to the federal government withholding local government allocations since February 2025, creating financial strain across the state.

Eluwole lamented the disruption the crisis has caused, noting that Osun State previously enjoyed peace and development before the recent political turmoil. “There was peace before, but with what is going on now—the wrangling—I didn’t sleep until 2AM. I left the Government House at 11PM and kept making calls till morning. There is a serious problem at hand,” he said.

The commissioner urged citizens to pray for Governor Adeleke, stating, “God will guide his feet from stumbling; he will not lead us astray.” He also recounted how a traditional ruler recently shed tears over the deteriorating state of affairs.

“On Saturday, Mr Governor wept for 15minutes before he could start a meeting, 15 minutes! They were pacifying him, where is Nigeria going? It is not a sin to be a Nigerian.

“We know what has been happening before about three years ago in the education sector, you can see what is going on now, Osun state education is to be reckoned with today, we are making Nigeria proud unlike before where it was vandalism, hooliganism, raping, cultism…all are the things of the past in our schools.”

He continued, “Are you talking of infrastructure, If not for what is happening since February till now we would have seen many provisions in the school now, it is in the pipeline.

“The money we are supposed to be using for these things is what we are using to pay primary school teachers, local government workers, health workers and 5% to traditional rulers, everybody is taking their money as at when due. That is why we don’t have more teachers in schools, let us pray for Osun State and our governor, he meant good for the state.”

Group blasts Aregbesola, warns against anti-Tinubu campaign

The Grassroots Movement for Tinubu (GMT) in Ondo State has criticised former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, labelling him an *ingrate* for abandoning the All Progressives Congress (APC) and aligning with opposition leaders.

Aregbesola, once a staunch ally of President Bola Tinubu, recently joined a new coalition comprising former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party’s Peter Obi.

The group, which has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform, announced Aregbesola as its interim National Secretary and former Senate President David Mark as its Chairman.

Last week, Aregbesola visited Ondo State to begin grassroots mobilisation for the ADC in the Southwest.

However, the GMT has strongly warned him to stop attempting to sway the minds of Ondo residents against President Tinubu.

In a statement on Tuesday, the GMT’s Director of Media, Oyewamide Ojo, accused Aregbesola of political betrayal, insisting that the people of Ondo remain loyal to President Tinubu and continue to benefit from his administration.

“Aregbesola has joined the league of quislings in the Southwest. History will remember his ungratefulness and treachery. Those before him who took a similar path are now forgotten or remembered with scorn,” the statement said.

Reaffirming Ondo State’s support for the President, the group highlighted several federal projects currently underway in the state under Tinubu’s administration.

These include the dualization of the Akure/Ado-Ekiti road, the Akure/Ondo/Ore road, and the approved dualization of the Ilesa/Akure/Owo/Benin road.

The group also pointed to social programmes such as the federal student loan scheme, which has benefited students from the state, as well as other government initiatives aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians.

“The people of our state believe in President Tinubu’s vision for a prosperous Nigeria. They trust his Renewed Hope Agenda and remain committed to his leadership,” the group said.
