Cleric urges Nigerians to shun negative confessions, preaches hope amid hardship

The Founder and General Overseer of The Anointed Saviour’s Church International, Molete, Ibadan, Rev’d Samson Fapohunda, has urged Nigerians, especially Christians, to refrain from making negative confessions about the country, particularly during difficult times.

Speaking during a Thanksgiving service to mark his 75th birthday, Rev’d Fapohunda warned against what he described as the tendency to “fall with the fall.”

He emphasised that maintaining a positive mindset and speaking positively, even in the face of adversity, could help bring about a turnaround in the nation’s fortunes.

Reflecting on his life journey, the cleric attributed his achievements and survival to God’s abundant grace, mercy, and favour.

He noted that while life has taught him many lessons, the most profound is that only God’s mercy can truly transform any negative situation for the better.

He said, “I give glory to God Almighty who gave me the opportunity from a humble background and turned around my life.

“I lost my father at the age of 10years and things were really rough and tough, but I thank God for his grace. Since that time I lost my father till now, I have passed through all manner of things, but I always use my life as an example for many people, because I didn’t fall with my fall.

“What I mean is that, for example, in this country and maybe in our individual lives, if things or situations fall, do not fall with it. If you don’t fall with fall, then you may control the fall, and that was what happened in my life.

“If the country falls, let’s say something goes wrong, that is a fall, and the people are saying, the country is bad, or condemning the country, that something has gone wrong, with that, we are falling with the fall. But if you stand up, stay positive and be optimistic even though things are rough and tough, then you are not falling with the fall. Things will turn around, and we all will be better for it.

“So I use the example of King David. Before he became a king, God used him to kill Goliath. Everybody said he could not do it, nobody gave him a chance, and even King Saul did not support him. But the boy said, I will go, for God will support me. So David did not fall with the fall, even though they said he could not make it.

“We are going to make it in this country. Even though there are positive signs towards that already, let us trust that God will make things work out well very soon. We should not give room for negativity.”

He enjoined the government and political office holders to shun nepotism and psychophancy at the expense of competence, so that things will turn around for good.

“Growing up, I went through a lot, but thank God, today. I lost my father at a very young age, and all hope seemed lost at the time; that’s why I thank God for the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo for the free education scheme at his time.

“That is why I urge those in government, if they can make education like it was of old. If I had to pay for school as it is today, maybe I won’t be able to enjoy any form of education, back then”, he stressed.

Noting that today’s Christianity is not like it used to be in times past, he urged church leaders to be cautious in putting a financial burden or stress on their members, saying many people who attend churches these days are those in need of one help or the other.

He added, “Christianity is no more than it was back then. Christianity in the past was different from what we have now. In those days when we started, we wanted to stand with the people and not what obtains now. We wanted to work and serve our Master, and we even engage in petty jobs to sustain ourselves

“We were not looking for money, but now, it’s not like that. Everybody wants to become a millionaire in this field. In my church, we don’t call people out for donations or financial support during programmes like we see Churches do these days.

“That is why we don’t celebrate the church anniversary among others. The categories of people that come to church these days are either those who have one challenge or the other. For instance, those who need healing, those seeking employment or trusting God in one way or another other and when you ask people to start donating, most times people get frustrated and discouraged because they don’t have the means.

“Churches back then asked people to give based on what they had, but these days things have changed. That’s why the church in those days was very different to what we have now.”

Rally behind our new Oba, Oyo Speaker appeals to Eruwa indigenes, residents, others

The Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin has called on the people of Eruwa, both at home and in the diaspora, as well as residents and well-meaning Nigerians, to unite in support of the newly crowned Eleruwa of Eruwaland, Oba Samuel Adegbola.

Speaking at the official coronation ceremony held at the Eleruwa Stadium over the weekend, Ogundoyin described the event as a historic milestone that marks the restoration of dignity, peace, and tradition after years of a protracted chieftaincy crisis.

“Today is a day of history, healing, and homecoming. After years of legal battles, division, and uncertainty, we rejoice in the coronation of Oba Samuel Adebayo Adegbola. We are happy that the long wait has ended,” Ogundoyin said.

He noted that the annulment of Oba Adegbola’s initial appointment in 2019 plunged the community into turmoil, but his eventual reinstatement has restored Eruwa’s cultural identity and traditional leadership.

The Speaker commended Governor Seyi Makinde for his bold leadership and commitment to justice in resolving the crisis, saying his intervention demonstrated respect for fairness and traditional institutions.

He urged all stakeholders, including royal families and community members, to embrace reconciliation and peace for the progress of Eruwaland.

“We must now close the door on conflict and open the gates to unity, growth, and development. Let us all work with Oba Adegbola to bring lasting progress to Eruwa,” he added.

  • Stop distracting Tinubu with 2027 talks — Osun ex-lawmaker

Stop distracting Tinubu with 2027 talks — Osun ex-lawmaker

A former member of the Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called on political leaders to refrain from distracting President Bola Tinubu with discussions about the 2027 general elections.

Oyintiloye, who served on the now-defunct APC Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), made the appeal on Sunday, urging politicians to allow the president to focus on addressing the country’s critical challenges.

In a statement, the ex-lawmaker noted that President Tinubu inherited a troubled economy in 2023, marked by a mounting debt burden, a weakening naira, and unsustainable fuel subsidy expenditures.

He stressed the need for national unity and support to enable the president tackle these pressing issues.

“Through his technocratic background, halfway through his administration, he had rekindled a ray of hope that many Nigerians seemed to have given up on.

“His bold steps on reform, starting with the removal of fuel subsidy on his first day in office and later collapsing multiple exchange rates into a single market-determined rate, are now yielding positive results” he.said.

The former lawmaker said that it was worrisome how politicians were discussing who would get what ahead of the 2027 elections, while the president was busy dealing with various challenges confronting the country.

“Some people are already jostling to be Vice President. The President is facing serious tasks to keep the economy healthy, defeat the evil of insurgency, and fix critical infrastructures that are not being supported anymore.

“The noise-making of these political opportunists, hell-bent on causing distractions, is capable of slowing down progress.

“It is becoming nauseating, to say the least. The 2027 election is still over a year and a half away, and yet those chasing positions won’t allow the president to work. That must stop forthwith,” Oyintiloye said.

The APC chieftain, who noted that the president’s administration was just two years into office, said that the 2027 elections should not be at the forefront at the moment.

“There are many pressing national matters that the president is attending to at the moment.Distracting him with who gets what ahead of 2027 and even 2031 elections is absurd and uncalled for.

“What the president needs at this point in time is our collective support, prayers, solidarity, and not unnecessary clamor for power struggle ahead of 2027”, he said

  • Senator Adeola hails Tinubu for signing landmark tax reform bills into law

Senator Adeola hails Tinubu for signing landmark tax reform bills into law

Senator Solomon Adeola (APC, Ogun West), Chairman of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, has commended President Bola Tinubu for signing into law four landmark tax reform bills aimed at overhauling Nigeria’s fiscal system.

In a statement issued by his media adviser, Kayode Odunaro, the senator said the new laws will significantly reshape the nation’s fiscal landscape by removing oppressive taxes on vulnerable Nigerians, simplifying tax compliance, boosting domestic productivity, and making Nigeria more attractive to foreign investors.

Adeola, a public finance and tax expert, also lauded the National Assembly for its diligent review and passage of the bills.

He praised the legislature for acting as a true people’s parliament by engaging stakeholders and the public in wide-ranging consultations, public hearings, and expert analyses, particularly on contentious provisions within the reform bills.

“This participatory process ensured that the final legislation reflects the collective interest of Nigerians, striking a balance between fiscal sustainability, equity, economic growth and social welfare that aligns fully with the vision and values of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu,” he stated.

Senator Adeola, who is also a member of the Senate Finance Committee that midwifed the laws, said that with the enactment of the four transformative tax laws – Nigeria Tax Act, Nigeria Tax Administration Act, Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act and Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act, the President has demonstrated yet again, purposeful leadership and political will to initiate and see through critical reforms required to promote inclusive growth and economic development in Nigeria.

“In specific terms, the Nigeria Tax Act will provide a unified fiscal legislation governing taxation in Nigeria, while reducing tax duplication and multiplicity in order to simplify tax compliance for individuals and businesses. The Nigeria Tax Administration Act will provide uniform procedures for consistent and efficient administration of tax laws in order to facilitate compliance by taxpayers and optimization of tax revenues,” he stated.

He stated that the Nigeria Revenue Service, (Establishment) Act which replaces the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) with the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) expanded the mandate of the revenue agency to include optimising government revenues from tax and non-tax sources.

He added that the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act sets up the Joint Revenue Board to harmonise and coordinate revenue administration in the country as well as provides the legal framework for the operations of Tax Appeal Tribunals and introduces the Office of the Tax Ombudsman for protection of taxpayers’ rights.

“Importantly, it is worthy to mention that these reforms will deliver tangible and far-reaching benefits to ordinary Nigerians. Key among these is the zero-rating of VAT on essential goods and services such as basic food items, education, healthcare, sanitary products and locally manufactured pharmaceuticals, making them more accessible and affordable for the general population. In addition, individuals earning ₦800,000 or less annually are now fully exempt from personal income tax, thereby easing the financial burden on low-income earners and boosting their disposable income,” he stated.

Among other benefits of the tax reforms laws, according to Senator Adeola, are the fact that small businesses and start-ups stand to gain significantly through higher turnover thresholds for tax exemptions, streamlined registration and filing processes and protection against multiple taxation across federal, state and local levels with rural and underserved communities are expected to benefit from better allocation of tax revenues towards critical infrastructure and public services such as schools, health centres, and rural roads.

Senator Adeola enjoined all well-meaning Nigerians to support the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President and the full implementation of the historic tax laws that promises the maximization of peoples’ welfare and economic prosperity for all.

“The signs of Nigeria’s economic recovery under President Tinubu’s leadership are clear and measurable. GDP growth rebounded to 3.86%, the fastest in three years, while national revenue rose to ₦21.6 trillion from ₦12.37 trillion, reflecting stronger fiscal performance.

“The budget deficit dropped from 6.2% in 2023 to 4.17% in 2025 and forex reforms have restored investor confidence, stabilizing markets. Inflation is declining, the Naira has stabilized and the dual exchange rate regime has been abolished, creating transparency and attracting over $40 billion in foreign investment. Non-oil exports have grown by nearly 40% and Nigeria recorded a ₦18 trillion trade surplus” the senator stated.

  • LG polls: Sanwo-Olu hails Oladega for loyalty to APC despite losing ticket

LG polls: Sanwo-Olu hails Oladega for loyalty to APC despite losing ticket

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, on Tuesday, hailed a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area, Prince Ibrahim Kehinde Oladega,  for his sense of loyalty and patriotism to the party despite losing the chairmanship ticket in the recently concluded primaries.

Sanwo-Olu gave the commendation when he hosted APC chairmanship and councillorship candidates in the July 12 Local Government Elections at a stakeholders’ parley held at the State House, Marina, where the governor presented the party’s flag to all the APC candidates.

While delivering his speech centered on the need for the party members not to take the forthcoming election for granted and to work for the success of the party, the governor asked Oladega, who anchored the event, to come out for special recognition for standing by the party despite losing tickets twice.

Sanwo-Olu said: ” He (Oladega) also bought nomination form for elective position (twice) but today he is a happy boy. He is the person who teaches me how to speak the Awori dialect, and his time will soon come to get there.

”He (Oladega) is a prince, yet he did not leave the party once the leaders decided on the direction the party was taking with regards to who the candidate is.”

He (Oladega) is still the one anchoring today’s event and calling all the candidates. If he had left the party, would he have had the hour to anchor today’s event? Such is the example I want you people to look at and emulate that, whatever it is our differences, we must resolve them and come together because a house that stands together stands united. So, let us use Oladega as an example of an aspirant who did not become a candidate, yet, his loyalty to the party is unflinching. This is what we should take home to our communities that we are happy, and the governor and all party leaders have not taken us for granted.”

”Seeing us in a uniform fabric says something that we are united and that we are a party that did not take people for granted and that we are united and we must ensure that we do not disappoint all the leaders that have come to validate and support your candidacy,” Sanwo-Olu added.

The campaign train of the All Progressive Congress (APC) rolled into Ikorodu Division yesterday, where party chairman Cornelius Ojelabi promised rewards for members who deliver their units during the council poll.

Urging Lagosians to endorse the party during the local government election, he assured that its government at the federal, state, and local government levels will not compromise the interest and welfare of Lagos State.

Ojelabi, accompanied by other party leaders, campaigned for chairmanship candidates from the Lagos East Senatorial District at the rally held at the Government Secondary School, Ogolonto.

He also announced plans for a mobilisation committee to engage various groups, including youths, women, and others, starting from Monday.

The chairman urged party members to highlight the achievements of President Bola Tinubu at the federal level, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu at the state level, and Senator Adetokunbo Abiru to the electorate, saying that voting for the APC would ensure the consolidation of these achievements.

Ojelabi expressed confidence that a united party would emerge victorious in the elections.

He said: “If you work for the success of the party, the leadership of your LG is taking note and I assure you that at the end of the day, you will be adequately rewarded. If we work together as one big family, there is no political party in Lagos State that will defeat us. The only party that has structures in all the 376 wards in Lagos is the APC.

“Let us come together and contribute our quota towards the success of the LG election. We are not taking it lightly; we need to showcase ourselves and let everyone know that APC is strong. If all of us are on the same page, victory is ours.
