Ahead of the 2026 governorship election, the National Secretary of All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ajibola Bashiru, has warned party members against using agitation for zoning governorship ticket to split the party..

Basiru, during a stakeholders meeting held at the APC state secretariat in Osogbo, urged aspirants for the governor’s seat to campaign only with their profile and not by sentiment or zoning.

He said: “I want to caution every one of us against using zoning agitation to polarize our party ahead of the election; it may not augur well for us. Anybody that wants to contest should use his personal profile to enter the race.

“I, Ajibola Bashiru have a rich profile that puts me in the frontline to lead the state. I am eminently qualified to be the governor of this state. I served as a Commissioner two times, I don’t have any blemish, if I did, they would have filed a petition against me.

He highlighted that he had occupied several political positions and he had performed well without blemish, hence he could lead the state.

“I served as a Senator and I was even appointed as the spokesperson of the Senate. God counted me worthy as our leaders in the party unanimously agreed to make me the National Secretary of the party.”

Gbajabiamila launches free transportscheme for students, elderly in Lagos

    • Urges all political appointees to be selfless

THE Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, has launched a scheme, GbajaRide, that will provide free transport to primary and secondary as well as the elderly that are 65 years and above in Surulere Local Government Area.

At the official launch of the scheme on Saturday, 33 mini and medium buses were unveiled to drive the project.

Speaking at the event, Gbajabiamila stated that he is not tired of serving the people of Surulere, stating that serving Surulere has been good stress for him.

He emphasized that the purpose of government is to allow people pursue and achieve their God-given ambition.

Justifying the need for the scheme, Gbajabiamila who donated 13 units of 32-seaters and 20 units of 18-seater King Long branded buses, said: “The purpose of government, and indeed the point of all public service, is to create the conditions that allow individuals and society to pursue their God-given ambitions, achieve success by the strength of their own endeavors, and thrive through the best efforts. Now, this recognition of the role of government underpins the Renewed Hope programme of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration. It informs all the policy, political, and administrative decisions this administration has taken since assuming office nearly two years ago.”

Expatiating, the former Speaker said: “The Gbaja Ride programme we are launching today is also a product of that determination to use the instruments of government at all levels to ease the lives of our people and empower our citizens to do more and achieve greater things. Access to safe, efficient, and reliable public transport services is imperative in the local environment at large. Access to these services, especially for young children in school, for older people, for the less able, and for all those who struggle with their income, can be the difference between succeeding in school or failing because of a lack of regular attendance.”

While noting that the free ride scheme is in partnership with the Lagos Metropolitan Transport Agency (LAMATA), Gbajabiamila assured that besides school students, the aged, the buses would be available to all other residents for intra-city shuttles at a steep discount of 25% below the pre-payment rates for all the routes where these buses will be available.

The former lawmaker representing Surulere 1 federal constituency, who reiterated that the free transport scheme was his own modest contribution to ameliorate the sufferings of the downtrodden masses, however urged all political appointees to ensure that they continue to contribute their quota to uplift the constituents.

“I believe by doing this, we have in our own little way contributed to the development of the society. If you look at the world over, any thriving economy, whether it’s America, whether it’s Germany, whether it’s South Africa, whether it’s Uganda, whether it’s Ghana, there is no economy that can thrive without a good transportation system. That is why in many countries, transportation is cheap.”

The President, he reiterated “has cleverly and rightfully removed subsidy from petrol. Very quietly, with his help, we have been able to at least here in Surulere subsidize transportation for our people. I think that is savings. The intervention is that those who need help the most, priority will always be given to our senior citizens.”

This is just as he revealed that he has written off the cost of salaries of 100 employees for the free transport scheme, insurance, fuel and other sundry expenses for three months, reiterated the need for other well-meaning Nigerians to emulate his gesture of charity giving which aims to impact the society at large. .

Speaking earlier, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), who also doubles as the Project Advisor, said the Gbaja Ride is a poverty alleviation scheme as it would enable subscribers save N20, 000 monthly and N240, 000 annually all thanks to the concession.

Also speaking at the event, Dr. Olukemi Amure, who represented the Managing Director of LAMATA, Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, lauded the scheme, even as she assured of her agency’s commitment to sustain the gesture.

In his remarks, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Lagos chapter, described Gbajabiamila as not just the face of Surulere but also the party at large.

Ojelabi, who was represented by the Deputy State chairman of APC Moshood Mayeigun, said, “With your name (Gbajabiamila) alone we’re fit to go, we have 24 hour light in Surulere. It is worthy of commendation.”

The highpoints of the occasion was the formal commissioning of the buses by Gbajabiamila, who was joined by other dignitaries including former and serving political appointees, public servants, community leaders, royal fathers from Ikate, Ijora, Agboyi-Ketu, to mention just a few.

Green Earth Action Foundation Sponsors Major Makoko Waterfront Cleanup Challenge in Lagos

In commemoration of Green Earth Action Day, the Green Earth Action Foundation (GEAF) sponsored a transformative environmental initiative, the Makoko Waterfront Revival, held on Tuesday, April 29, 2025, to restore the heavily polluted Makoko waterfront in Lagos and inspire collective climate action.

The event was organized by Life in My Hands Initiative (LIMHI), a youth-led environmental nonprofit dedicated to grassroots ocean conservation, environmental education, and community empowerment in coastal communities. It brought together over 60 passionate volunteers from across Lagos, including local Makoko youths, NYSC corps members, and climate advocates.

GEAF’s sponsorship played a critical role in the success of the initiative funding logistics, mobilization efforts, cleanup materials, community sensitization, and volunteer coordination. Their contribution enabled the team to engage deeply with the Makoko community, restore key parts of the waterfront, and ignite long-term interest in sustainability among local residents.

The Makoko Waterfront Revival was the first of its kind in Nigeria a fully youth-led, community-anchored cleanup competition in a floating slum, combining environmental action with civic education, household engagement, and cross-generational dialogue. Volunteers were grouped into teams, each tasked with clearing specific zones while simultaneously sensitizing residents. Youth volunteers, elders, and children worked side by side, demonstrating a rare and powerful show of intergenerational climate solidarity.

Over the course of the day, more than 1,500 kilograms of waste mostly plastic, domestic waste, and debris was removed from the waterfront and surrounding areas. The cleanup also targeted a notorious fuel-dumping zone, now cleared and marked for follow-up sensitization and enforcement.

The challenge wasn’t just about cleanup—it was a powerful blend of environmental education, action, and advocacy. As part of the sensitization efforts, youth-led teams visited households, distributed educational pamphlets, and engaged residents in simple but impactful dialogues about pollution, plastic use, and ocean health.

“This event showcased the power of youth-led change backed by visionary support,” said Eniola Omotoye, Project Engineer of Life in My Hands Initiative and the official GEAF Green Earth Action Day Ambassador for Lagos. “GEAF didn’t just fund a cleanup—they helped us spark a movement in Makoko, one rooted in community pride and environmental justice.”

The Makoko Waterfront Revival was part of a globally synchronized environmental effort, with coordinated events taking place in cities across Nigeria, including Abuja, as well as internationally, under the banner of Green Earth Action Day. The initiative underscores the urgency of ocean restoration, the value of youth engagement, and the importance of equitable action in marginalized coastal communities.

Other organizations that lent support include the Conservation Leaders Network, Ocean Uprise, LNSC and LAWMA, while Makoko community elders and youth leaders helped facilitate local participation and dialogue.

Moving forward, Life in My Hands Initiative plans to return to Makoko with follow-up activities, including workshops on upcycling, environmental art with children, and stakeholder dialogues on pollution enforcement and resilience building.

Ogun residents cry out over pollution by recycling firm

Residents of Excellent Estate in Igboloye community,  Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State has cried out to Governor Dapo Abiodun over alleged pollution of their community by a tyre recycling company, Terra Aqua Ltd.

A statement jointly signed by the chairman and secretary of the residents association, Pastor Chidi Ulelu and Alhaja Badmus urged Abidoun to intervene before it’s too late.

The statement read in part: ”Their business activity in a summary involves burning tyres to release both the gas and solid components and use it to produce syngas and blackoil to be used as fuel for their other factories and economic benefit. The process releases very poisonous hydrocarbons into the atmosphere and the surrounding environment and these hydrocarbons are poisonous to human beings, animals and plants as they poison the air, the land, the surface water and underground water causing a lot of harmful effects, sicknesses and even death.

”When the company starts operating their factory  an asphyxiating and pungent odour is usually emitted choking people and leading to shortness of breath. On some occasions they emit terrible smoke and on one occasion there was an unimaginable fire outbreak on top of overestimated half a million old and used tyres stored openly in their compound and they keep gathering more.

”’On May 2, 2023 we wrote a detailed request to the Ogun State Ministry of Environment to come and stop them since they are operating illegally and destroying lives of people.

”They stopped them to see if there can be a remedy, there was no remedy but unilaterally they started operations again. By February 19, 2024 we petitioned the Governor of Ogun and referred to our earlier letter to the Commissioner of Environment in Ogun state. Later we went to governor’s office in Abeokuta on a peaceful protest and were addressed by a representative of the governor who promised to intervene but they failed to do anything.

”We continued protesting and writing to the ministry more than eight times in between  till January 2025 when the fire broke out in their pile of hundreds of thousands of tyres and later the Commissioner of Environment visited in company of Ado-Odo/ Ota local government chairman and shut down the company indefinitely, this very January 2025.

”Suddenly last week they started operation again and the community mobilized and peacefully stopped them because we asked them for the authority from the commissioner and they said their own management told them to operate in defiance to government closure order. Their latest act is to resort to intimidation and harassment of community leaders by threats and also using security agencies.

Meanwhile, in his response, the Managing Director of Terra Aqua Ltd, Mr. Salako said that it was not true his company has been polluting the community.

He said: ” There is no truth in the allegations. My company does not emit any effluent into the air or discharge waste water into the community.

”I reported the matter to the police after the residents embarked on a protest at my company’s premise and smashed window glass and manhandled some of my workers.”

  • Tinubu administration not ‘Yoruba government’, says Afenifere

Tinubu administration not ‘Yoruba government’, says Afenifere

Pan Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has rejected the tagging of the administration of President Bola Tinubu as a ‘Yoruba government.’

It said the administration remained a Nigerian government that did not ascend to the presidency by tribal inheritance but by democratic choice.

Afenifere said Tinubu emerged from votes cast in faith by Nigerians of every tongue, creed, and religion.

It noted that to ‘label this administration as “Yoruba” and weaponize that label as grounds for sabotage is not only dishonest, but a vile act of tribal opportunism and sedition. We reject it utterly.’

National Organising Secretary of Afenifere, Abagun Kole Omololu, in a statement, said the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari was not branded a “Fulani government,” adding that no tribal coalition was formed to deny Buhari a second term on the grounds of ethnicity.

The statement hailed Dr. Sandra Duru for speaking truth to conspiracy. Her voice is a reminder that integrity still walks among us, and that silence, in the face of wickedness, is not an option for those who love this country.

Afenifere condemned what it termed campaign of calumny and false allegations against President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

According to the statement, “We reject the weaponization of false allegations as political tools — especially when such weapons are aimed at innocent men, families and private lives.

“We strongly decry the internationalization of fabricated domestic issues by those who authored the falsehood in the first place. This is akin to setting fire to your own seat in a cinema and running out crying “Fire! Fire!” — not out of alarm, but out of selfish ambition. It is selfishness that seeks to burn down the image of the nation to satisfy the ego of one person who believes that except she has her way, the country should not have peace.

“Nigeria is not a personal or tribal empire. Our nation will not bow to tribal blackmail. It will not bend to invented narratives. And it will not break under the weight of conspiracy. Let all patriots rally to the defence of truth, justice, and constitutional order. Let us remember that nations fall not only when tanks roll through streets — but also when lies, repeated often enough, begin to sound like truth.

“We have come too far to be dragged backward by petty ambition disguised as activism. Let us reject the agents of sabotage — not because they threaten one man, but because they threaten all of us.”
