LASTMA rescues driver as truck plunges from Lagos bridge

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has rescued a severely-injured driver whose truck plunged from the Pen Cinema Bridge in Agege.

According to a report by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, made this known in a statement on Saturday in Lagos.

The statement was signed by Mr Taofiq Adebayo, Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, LASTMA.

According to Bakare-Oki, the accident occurred on Saturday on Old Abeokuta Road, Agege, and involved a fully-laden truck with registration number GGE 624 Y and two painted commercial Volkswagen buses.

He said that LASTMA officers responded swiftly and successfully extricated the severely-injured driver and immediately entrusted him to officers of the Elere Police Division.

He added that the driver was subsequently conveyed to the General Hospital, Ile-Epo, for urgent medical intervention.

“Preliminary inquiries suggest that the truck driver, who suffered grievous fractures to both hands, lost control of the vehicle while navigating the Pen Cinema Bridge.

“Consequently, the truck plunged from the bridge, landing upon the two commercial buses stationed beneath,” he said.

The LASTMA boss said that in a bid to safeguard other road users and forestall secondary incidents, the authority’s personnel swiftly secured the accident site by cordoning off the area and diverting vehicular traffic.

“Thereafter, operatives of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority Response Unit expeditiously cleared the wreckage, thereby restoring unimpeded traffic flow along the axis.”

Bakare-Oki implored  motorists, particularly truck operators, to exhibit heightened vigilance and circumspection, especially with the onset of the rainy season.

He urged strict compliance with road safety protocols, and urged drivers to use the newly-installed speed-limiting devices, a measure strategically deployed to mitigate accidents and promote collective road safety.

He wished the driver rapid and full recovery.

“For prompt traffic assistance or to engage the services of LASTMA officers on any Lagos thoroughfare, kindly contact the agency’s toll-free hotline: 0800 00 527 862,” he said.

Second anniversary: Ologere commissions palace, empowers residents

Traditional ruler of Ogereland, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, Ologere of Ogere Remo, Oba James Obafemi Saliu, Kankanbiina II, yesterday, commissioned his ultra-modern palace as part of activities marking the second anniversary of his ascension to the throne.

The monarch empowered many indigenes and non-indigenes in the town on Thursday.

During the empowerment programme, many artisans went home with different tools and equipment, 50 others received  N100,000 each.

Speaking on why people from different ethnic groups benefited from the empowerment programme, he explained that he did that to recognise the diversity that exists in the transit community. “The town has Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa, Igede, Tivs, among others. All these people are part of us, and we cannot be doing things for only the Ogere indigenes, so we must extend the hands of fellowship to all these people.”

He, however, called on the beneficiaries to make use of the equipment, adding that doing so would make him very happy and would motivate him to do more subsequently.

Osun/Oyo boundary: Disputed areas belong to Osun – Oluwo

    • Olubadan warns land expansionists, land grabbers, other trespassers

The Paramount Ruler of Iwoland, Osun State, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale, has countered a report purportedly originating from the Olubadan palace, Oyo State, Oba Akinloye Olakulehin.

The Olubadan, speaking through the Ekerin Olubadan, Oba Hamidu Ajibade, had declared that Oba River was the boundary between the city of Ibadan and Iwo town.

While affirming that Iwo town had no claim over the disputed boundary area, Olubadan stated that Oba River remained a long-established boundary between the city of Ibadan and Iwo town.

The Olubadan disclosed this at an emergency meeting of Obas, Mogajis, and Baales from the boundary areas of Ibadan and Iwo, held in the Committee Room at the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, Ibadan.

Reacting, the Oluwo stated that the claim that Odo Oba is the boundary between Ibadan and Iwo is false, incoherent, a blatant distortion of facts and a deliberate plot to heighten the tension of the original land owners and cause chaos in the affected areas.

He said no one had the right to make such a pronouncement when the matter is before the National Boundary Commission (NBC).

He stressed that such a statement was synonymous with contempt of the federal government and sabotage of the effort of the AIG Zone XI, Emuobo Fred Ekokotu, who had intervened and invited the two parties to respect the status quo.

He advised the palace of Olubadan to respect the government represented by the Police and the NBC and refrain from comments likely to fuel further destruction in the area.

Oluwo affirmed Papa Ebira as the established boundary of Iwo with a map officially demarcated in 1991 when Osun was created out of the old Oyo State.

He revealed that the affected villages, such as Paku, Ogunajo, Oloola Molamu, Papa, Tifede, Ejemu, are all ancestral villages of Iwo with Osun State Government facilities and polling units.

A statement released by Oluwo and made available to newsmen through his press secretary, Alli Ibraheem, reads “I read the statement credited to Olubadan palace, Oba Akinloye Olakulehin, that Oba River is the boundary of Iwo with Ibadan, with dismay, coming at a critical moment when the AIG Zone XI, Emuobo Fred Ekokotu, is making a concerted effort to restore peace at the affected villages. Just two days ago, he invited the two parties to his office and tentatively directed the duo to stay off the affected villages.

“As a peace loving father to the nation, I calmed the people of these villages. I encouraged them to respect the decision of the AIG and await the report of the National Boundary Commission. Any other message is an affront to the NBC and the police representing the government in resolving the dispute permanently.”

The Iwo monarch insisted that the time has come when the issue of boundary dispute between Ibadan and Iwo be  permanently resolved

“Let’s conduct ourselves and encourage our subjects to be law-abiding. No one is greater than the government. We should allow the government to do their job. Peace is priceless and should be promoted.”

    Olubadan clears air

Meanwhile, Olubadan, speaking earlier on the disputed boundary, warned those whom he described as land expansionists, land grabbers and other trespassers to leave forcefully acquired Ibadan land without further delay in their own interests.

“I seriously warn land expansionists, land grabbers and other trespassers to leave forcefully acquired Ibadan land without further delay in their own interests.

“The established fact that Ibadan people are lovers of peaceful coexistence and therefore accommodating should not be taken for granted or misinterpreted as cowardice, Yiyo ekun bi t’ojo ko.”

Olubadan urged the Obas, Mogajis and Baales in the affected areas to protect their territorial integrity and ensure the ownership of land belonging to Ibadan is not compromised.

The monarch stated categorically that trespassers should be prepared to face the music.

He enjoined traditional title holders in Ibadan-Iwo boundary areas to give maximum support to the Olubadan of Ibadanland as well as the Oyo State Government to ensure that the land forcefully and fraudulently taken over is reclaimed.

Present at the meeting were Ekarun Balogun of Ibadanland, High Chief Sarafadeen Ali, Obas, Mogajis and Baales among others.

  • AMBO2026: The banker who walked through fire to rebuild Osun

AMBO2026: The banker who walked through fire to rebuild Osun

    By Sulaiman Gafar

In the pages of Nigeria’s modern political history, few names carry the quiet authority of Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji. Where others rely on noise, he speaks through action. Where many seek attention, he delivers impact. Today, as Osun State stands at the edge of a pivotal decision, the case for Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji—strong, strategic, and rooted in a legacy of results—is not just compelling. It is urgent.

His journey into public consciousness did not begin in the campaign circuit, nor was it paved with empty promises. It began in Nigeria’s financial sector, where for over 28 years he earned his reputation not by proximity to power but through excellence in performance. From Wema Bank in the late 80s to senior executive roles at Spring Bank and Enterprise Bank, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji built a career on turning numbers into narratives of growth. He wasn’t just present in the room—he was the one rewriting the rules. Recognitions like the Central Bank’s Star Performer Award and Trans Bank’s Most Profitable Manager citation were no surprises. They were inevitabilities for a man who treated results like a standard, not an exception.

But while others may have settled into comfortable retirement after such a run, Oyebamiji was destined for harder work. In 2012, a failing state enterprise—OSICOL—was handed to him. It was bleeding cash and credibility. Most had written it off. But where others saw rot, he saw opportunity. He walked in with clarity, reshaped its financial model, installed discipline, and executed with military precision. Within five years, ₦300 million became ₦6 billion. He didn’t just revive OSICOL; he redefined what was possible when private-sector insight met public-sector responsibility. What was once a deadweight on Osun’s books became a thriving holding company under the name Omoluabi Holdings.

At OSICOL, some of his legacy projects include the construction of the Corporate Headquarters of Omoluabi Holdings at Abere, the establishment of a viable mega Petroleum and Gas Station in Abere, and strategic investments in real estate across highbrow areas of Abuja and Lagos. He also initiated a thriving cocoa plantation in Osogbo and spearheaded the rebranding and standardisation of the Essence Table Water brand, turning it into a household name across Nigeria.

The transformation didn’t go unnoticed. In 2017, Oyebamiji was tapped once again, this time as Commissioner for Finance in Osun State. It was not an easy season—national revenue was thinning, state debts were mounting, and faith in government was wearing thin. Yet under Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji’s financial stewardship, Osun didn’t sink. It stood. Salaries were paid without drama. Infrastructure continued. Internally generated revenue began to climb.

When he took over the affairs of the Osun Ministry of Finance in 2017, he reformed the ministry and grew the IGR from ₦6 billion where he met it, to ₦24 billion by 2022. Under his leadership, Osun State was commended for the effective implementation of the SLOGOR programme—a European Union–supported reform initiative. These efforts earned the Governor the prestigious ‘Best Governor on Efficiency of Public Expenditure’ award from the World Bank’s States’ Fiscal Transparency, Accountability, and Sustainability (SFTAS) program. During the same period, the State also received the Award of Excellence as the top performer in Domestic Revenue Mobilisation.

Similarly, under his direct supervision, Osun became a strong contender in the World Bank–backed SFTAS programme. It is no surprise that the state was rewarded with millions of dollars in three consecutive years while the programme lasted. During his tenure as Head of the Consolidated Fund (HCF), Oyebamiji also delivered on the SIFMIS programme, strengthened the Treasury Single Account (TSA) regime, and helped nurture the Public Procurement Agency into a cornerstone of financial accountability.

Then came the national stage. In 2023, when President Tinubu’s administration was looking for a fixer to reposition the National Inland Waterways Authority, the choice was easy. Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji was appointed as Managing Director, and just as he had done before, he got to work. Within months, 15 new operational boats were introduced. An administrative complex and staff clinic were commissioned. A pioneering Waterways Transportation Code was launched to reduce accidents and ensure safety across Nigeria’s neglected inland transport routes. River Marshals were deployed, public-private partnerships began taking shape. He improved staff welfare, commenced child care payments for staff, facilitated the first-ever foreign training in the agency’s history, initiated the payment of 13 months’ salary and other staff entitlements, and in 2024, reduced boat accidents and deaths on Nigeria waterways by 30% and for the first time in decades, NIWA became something more than a forgotten agency. It became a symbol of what efficient leadership can do.

What makes Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji different isn’t what he says. It’s what he consistently does. While politics has become a theatre of talking heads and empty gestures, he remains a man of substance. His governance style is rooted in capacity, not charisma. In boardrooms, ministries, or federal agencies, he has never chased attention. He has simply earned respect. His blueprint is not theoretical—it exists in the numbers, in the policies he crafted, in the institutions he revived.

Osun is not a state in need of reinvention. It is a state in need of restoration. A state that deserves to be led by someone who has scaled the learning curve, who understands the weight of governance, and who is prepared not just to serve, but to deliver. Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji represents such without complacency. Reform without recklessness. Leadership without ego.

As the election season approaches, voters must ask a simple question: do we gamble on rehearsed ambition, continue with the legendary dancer or do we reward proven leadership? Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji is not a stranger to results. He is the architect behind them. He is not here to promise change. He has already executed it—repeatedly, across sectors, at scale.

The future of Osun cannot be left to chance. It must be entrusted to a man who understands both the heartbeat of the people and the blueprint of sustainable progress. In this critical moment, ASIWAJU MUNIRUDEEN BOLA OYEBAMIJI is not just an aspirant. He is the answer.

Sulaiman writes from Osogbo,  Osun State.

“Even if you are young , you are working, and suddenly you lose your jobs, either through termination of appointments or inability of your working place to continue operations, there is a system that will signal to the government that this person is not working again. The government gives priority and take care of such person that don’t have job any longer until he secures another employment.

“For the retirees,  they know that when they retired, there is a provision for them to live on.

Adeola condemns killings in Ogun border communities

Senator representing Ogun West, Olamilekan Adeola has reiterated his condemnation of killing of residents of Ogun communities bordering the Republic of Benin by the operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS).

Adeola popularly called Yayi who bemoaned what he described as “incessant killings” of Ogun West residents by the customs men in the name of tackling smuggling, declared that the killings must be stopped.

The Senate Committee Chairman on Appropriations, said that everyone residing in the border communities cannot be tagged as smugglers, rather, they are legitimate inter-border traders, stressing that the killings by the operatives of the customs are without justification.

Adeola stated this while speaking at the 2nd Edition of Town Hall Meeting/Mega Empowerment and Thank You Tour, held at Imeko town, Imeko-Afon Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Friday.

At the event attended by leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), traditional rulers and trade associations, youths, women and artisans numbering 4,000 were given empowerment tools.

Adeola expressed dismay at what he described as a “selective opening “of petrol stations, emphasizing that concerted efforts have been initiated   at the National Assembly to facilitate the reopening of all the stations.

Speaking on the empowerment programme, the senator said that the programme was organized to reward constituents in Ogun West for voting him as their senator.

He explained further that the distribution of the empowerment tools was decentralized to accommodate and empower more beneficiaries in all the five local government areas in the senatorial districts.

While warning the beneficiaries of the empowerment scheme not to sell the tools but use them to enhance their businesses and crafts, Adeola assured them that he would continue to give qualitative representation and facilitate more developmental projects to Ogun West.

He, however, submitted that rehabilitation work will commence soon on the road from Rounder to Olorunda, while the ongoing road construction in Ilara, Ilase, Oja Odan and Eselu as well as Iwoye-Oke Agbede-Moriwi will soon be completed
