    • FCSC chair pledges more excellent service

The Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), Prof. Tunji Olaopa, has promised to offer more excellent service to the public.

Olaopa spoke yesterday when the Oyo State government gave him the state’s Merit Award.

In a letter conveying his nomination as a recipient of the award to mark the golden jubilee of the state’s creation, the government said he was being honoured for his “selfless service to the growth and development of Oyo State and for ably representing the state on the world stage”.

In his acceptance of the award, which was conferred at an event hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, Olaopa acknowledged what he called the subtext of the recognition of his modest accomplishments.

These, the FCSC chairman said, were meant to keep up his “unfailing efforts in pushing the boundaries of institutional and governance reforms that will connect, for example, the Oyo State public administration system to the larger federal system in terms of delivering the dividends of democratic development that the citizens of Oyo State need so badly, to make life better for them”.

On behalf of himself, the Afijio and Awe community and the Olaopa family, the FCSC chairman expressed appreciation to “our leader, the indefatigable Governor Seyi Makinde” and his team for considering him worthy of the recognition.

Expressing his determination to be of more service to the state and be a source of inspiration for its development, Olaopa offered what he called a “solemn promise to you, dear Excellency, that I will not stop working to keep pushing Oyo State ahead in the frontier of excellence”.

The FCSC chairman said he had every reason to be proud of his origin as an indigene of Oyo State.

He said: “No matter what one has gone on to achieve in life, one has every reason to be proud to have come from Oyo State for many reasons.”

Listing his reasons for showing gratitude for the award, the former Federal Permanent Secretary and professor of Public Administration noted that Oyo State “is a land of historical legacies, cultural heritage, and sociopolitical dynamics that stand it out as a formidable context of development in the whole of the Southwest Nigeria”.

He added: “When we talk of the glorious days of governance and of the civil service, it is the Southwest headquartered in Oyo State that is being referenced – standing tall as the Pacesetter State, a state of many firsts; a state like no other.

“The reason that ‘aji se bi Oyo la n ri, Oyo ki i se baba eni kokan’ has such a deep meaning that resonates with most indigenes.

“From the collective responsibilities of past leaders —traditional and political — to the current and exemplary leadership of the incumbent governor, Oyo State has consistently been pushed through the trajectory of internal development in all ramifications that make it truly the ‘Pacesetter State’ indeed.

“However, to set the pace demands that one must always be deploying frontier, thinking that puts the state ahead in terms of creative development initiatives.”

According to him, it is remarkable that Oyo State has benefited on average from committed leaders since it was created in 1976.

Olaopa hailed Governor Makinde for sustaining the developmental orientation with significant evidence of infrastructural progress to show for it.

The FCSC chairman urged Oyo as the lead state in the Southwest, to demonstrate being a pacesetter in creativity in leveraging inter-state partnerships to harness economies of scale, deepen infrastructural progress and restore the Southwest as an economic corridor in the context of fiscal federalism in Nigeria.

Tinubu, Oyebanji hail Ondo’s developmental strides

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has hailed Ondo State for its remarkable and consistent development over the past 50 years, describing the state as a shining example of steady growth and purposeful leadership.

Speaking yesterday at a colourful ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of Ondo State in Akure, President Tinubu said Ondo had demonstrated strong dedication to the advancement of democracy and progress, especially in education, infrastructure and human capital development, adding that the state’s growth trajectory remained a source of pride to the country.

The President, represented by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji- Ojo, spoke just as Ekiti State Governor, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, and former governor of Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, praised the resilience, unity and commitment of the people of the state, noting that the state had recoded significant achievements across sectors since its creation in 1976.

The President said: “As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Ondo State, I hold the people of Ondo State with very high regards. I recognise the resilience, industrial and civic responsibility of Ondo people.

“During the last national election, the people of Ondo State demonstrated remarkable participation, discipline and commitment to democratic ideals. Your engagements strengthen the nation’s democracy and reinforce our belief in purposeful leadership. I deeply appreciate your support and I assure all citizens of Ondo State that my administration remains commuted to serving Nigerians equitably”.

Governor Oyebanji, who congratulated the government and people of Ondo State for sustaining the vision of its founding fathers, acknowledged the state’s consistency in delivering meaningful development, stressing that Ondo had continued to play a vital role in the socio-economic advancement of the Southwest and Nigeria as a whole.

The governor noted that the progress recorded by Ondo State served as motivation for other states to remain committed to policies and programmes that enhanced the welfare and well-being of their citizens.

“I bring greetings from your brothers and sisters in Ekiti State. We started this journey together 50 years ago, but 29 years ago we left and we are so grateful to God that Ondo is going up and up and good things are happening in Ondo State. We are so proud of the development strides Ondo State has achieved.” the governor said.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu and other dignitaries for joining the state in celebrating its golden jubilee, described the 50th anniversary as a significant milestone that reflects the sacrifices, vision and collective efforts of the founding fathers and successive administrations that have contributed to the growth and transformation of the state.

He also commended the people of Ondo State for their enduring unity, resilience and support for government initiatives over the years and urged them to continue to work together in peace and harmony, assuring the citizens that his administration remained focused on building a more prosperous, inclusive and sustainable future for the state.

Noting that Ondo State has made remarkable progress in critical sectors such as education, health care, infrastructure, agriculture and industrial development, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining policies and programmes that would further improve the standard of living of residents, attract investments and create opportunities for economic prosperity across the state.

It is recalled that Ondo State, like Ogun and Oyo states, was created from the old Western State, when the country embraced the 19-state structure in 1976. Ekiti State was carved out of the old Ondo State on October 1, 1996.

Drama as suspect dares court to jail him over alleged death threat

There was mild drama yesterday at the Akungba-Akoko Division of the Magistrates’ Court in Ondo State as a suspect, Mr Segun Orungbeja, challenged the magistrate during his arraignment over an alleged threat to kill a man with a cutlass.

Mr Orungbeja stunned the courtroom when Magistrate K. A. Kolawole asked what led to his arrest.

Angry, the suspect fired back: “If you want to sentence me, you can go ahead; my God is watching you.”

The outburst disrupted proceedings before order was restored.

Police Prosecutor, Inspector Ola Boboye told the court that Orungbeja allegedly threatened to kill one Abiodun Akintunde with a cutlass.

According to the charge sheet, the alleged offence is contrary to and punishable under Section 86 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

Defence counsel, B. J. Eniayewu, pleaded for leniency and bail, urging the court to temper justice with mercy and assuring that his client would not abscond.

In his ruling, Mr Kolawole granted the suspect bail but ordered that he be remanded pending the perfection of the bail conditions.

The case was adjourned until February 4.

Wife of Oyo Governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde, has donated writing materials to public schools across the state as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of Oyo state.

She described education as greatest legacy that can be passed on to future generations.

Mrs Makinde said the initiative was deliberately designed to place children at the centre of the Oyo@50 celebrations.

She stated that the growth and stability of the state depend largely on quality of education given to its young population.

According to her: “Our children are the future of Oyo State. The state belongs to you, and if you work hard, you will inherit it and take it forward.”

She thanked teachers and members of the Oyo@50 Anniversary Planning Committee for making the programme possible.

According to her, education remained the most effective tool for breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering individuals to contribute meaningfully to society.

“Education is the greatest legacy we, as a government and as parents, can give to our children. When you are educated, you can lift yourself out of poverty, defend your family with a strong voice and make informed decisions for yourself and for the future of Oyo State.”

Mrs Makinde urged beneficiaries of the stationeries to make proper use of it, calling on them to cultivate strong reading habits and remain focused on their academic pursuits.

“As you receive these materials today, do not forget to enrich your brain. Read your books, make the best use of this stationery and continue to work hard. Your education is important for the growth and development of Oyo State.”

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hon. Olusegun Olayiwola, described the initiative as a strategic investment in the state’s future, noting that access to basic learning materials plays a critical role in improving educational outcomes.

“This programme reflects the commitment of the Oyo State Government to strengthening public education. By supporting our students with learning materials, we are laying a solid foundation for academic excellence and ensuring that no child is left behind.”

He commended teachers for their dedication and urged students to remain disciplined and committed to their studies.

The Senator representing Osun West Senatorial District, Senator Adelere Adeyemi Oriolowo, has described the death of renowned businessman and community leader, Alhaji Sulaiman Ola Aremu, popularly known as Aremu Motors, as a monumental loss to Iwoland and Osun State at large.

In a condolence message, Oriolowo said the passage of Alhaji Aremu marked the exit of an iconic leader whose life embodied integrity, hard work and selfless service.

He noted that the late Aremu was a rare figure whose influence cut across business, community development and traditional institutions in Iwo.

The lawmaker described the deceased as a living testament to the fact that true greatness is measured by character and impact rather than academic qualifications.

According to him, Alhaji Aremu rose from humble beginnings to prominence through vision, determination and resilience, despite not having the advantage of extensive formal education.

Oriolowo recalled that the late businessman began his journey to success in the transport sector, a venture that laid the foundation for his entrepreneurial growth and lifelong commitment to service.

The Senator noted that his philanthropy and community spirit earned him widespread respect and trust among the people.

Oriolowo further highlighted the late Aremu’s close relationship with the late Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Asiru Olatunbosun, describing him as a loyal friend and trusted ally who played a significant role in supporting the monarch’s ascension to the throne.

He said this reflected the deceased’s strong belief in loyalty, destiny and service to tradition.

The Senator also recalled Alhaji Aremu’s contributions to key community institutions, noting that he served as the first Chairman of the Iwo Day Celebrations and was a member of both the first and second Iwo Board of Trustees.

He added that the deceased personally provided logistical support during the 2006 National Population Census, a contribution that helped Iwo emerge as the most populous local government area in Osun State.

Describing him as a respected businessman, farmer, community leader and patriot, Oriolowo said Alhaji S. Ola Aremu left an indelible imprint on the political, economic and social development of Iwoland.

  • Oil discovery: Ogun govt reaffirms jurisdiction, cites legal, historical evidence

Oil discovery: Ogun govt reaffirms jurisdiction, cites legal, historical evidence

Ogun State Government has reaffirmed its territorial jurisdiction over Eba Island in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, dismissing claims from some quarters in Ondo State as misleading and capable of triggering avoidable communal tension.

The clarification follows public debates and a motion sponsored by Donald Kimikanboh Ojogo, representing Ilaje Federal Constituency in Ondo State, after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the commencement of drilling activities at an abandoned oil well located on Eba Island.

In a statement issued yesterday, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, Kayode Akinmade, said Eba Island where the approved oil well is located falls within Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun State.

According to Akinmade, boundaries between states and local governments in Nigeria are constitutionally defined and properly documented by the National Boundary Commission (NBC), adding that official boundary maps and records clearly situate Eba Island within Ogun State.

READ ALSO: The men who ruined a republic

He explained that Eba is a long-established community within Ogun Waterside, whose status predates Nigeria’s independence and has remained unchanged through successive political and administrative reorganisations, including the 1976 state creation exercise that carved Ogun State out of the former Western State.

“Since 1976, there has been no constitutional amendment, judicial pronouncement or federal gazette that altered the boundary placing Eba outside Ogun State,” the statement said.

The government clarified that there are two distinct locations known as “Eba.” While one is located near the Ondo State forest reserve, the larger Eba Island—where the oil well approved by the President is situated—lies entirely within Ogun State’s coastal corridor.

Akinmade noted that the presidential approval for drilling followed extensive due diligence by Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and other relevant federal institutions, all of which confirmed that the oil well is located within Ogun State territory before clearance was granted.

He added that the deployment of national security assets, including naval formations around the drilling site, further demonstrates federal recognition of Ogun State as the host state.

Providing additional context, the statement disclosed that in October 2024, the Molokun of Atijere in Ondo State formally approached the Osobia of Makun-Omi in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area, seeking permission to conduct business activities on Eba Island. The request was declined and subsequently reported to the Ogun State Government, NNPCL and security agencies.

According to the government, this engagement amounted to a tacit acknowledgment of Ogun State’s jurisdiction over the area.

On historical claims being circulated, the Ogun State Government described reliance on colonial documents from 1919 and 1920 as misleading, pointing instead to Colonial Government Gazette No. 660 of April 29, 1950, which clearly defined the boundary between the former Ijebu and Ondo provinces and superseded earlier notices.

The government also cited lease agreements, historical community records and survey documents—including the Olokola Free Trade Zone Survey Plan—as further evidence establishing Eba Island as part of Ogun State.

Administrative validation by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was also referenced, with the polling unit at LA Primary School, Eba, officially registered under Makun/Irokun Ward in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area of Ogun State.

Akinmade said that following the discovery of hydrocarbon prospects in the coastal corridor, Ogun State Government conducted independent verification of the well coordinates using geospatial and cartographic technology, which confirmed that the wells are located within Ogun State boundaries.

He added that Ogun State has worked closely with the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and NNPCL in securing the asset and preparing it for commercial exploration, including facilitating the establishment of naval security infrastructure in the area.

While cautioning against the spread of misinformation and inflammatory narratives, Ogun State Government called for restraint and responsible engagement by all parties.

The government reaffirmed its commitment to the rule of law, peaceful coexistence and cooperation with the Federal Government in safeguarding national assets, saying the people of Makun-Omi Kingdom have assured authorities of their readiness to maintain peace and protect lives and property.

“The facts are clear and the law is settled. Eba Island where the approved oil well is located is in Ogun State,” the statement concluded.

  • Crisis brews over Idanre kingship tussle

Crisis brews over Idanre kingship tussle

Fresh controversy has trailed a process to fill the vacant Owa of Idanre stool in Ondo State, as the ruling family of the late monarch, Oba Fredrick Adegunle Aroloye, has petitioned Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, alleging attempts by some government officials to subvert laid-down procedures and impose an ineligible candidate on the community.

The family, in the copy of the petition obtained by The Nation at the weekend, accused officials of the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs of backing a candidate they described as unqualified, warning that such interference could trigger unrest and threaten the peace of the ancient town.

In the petition signed by their solicitor, Akinyemi Omoware, the family alleged that the ministry was conniving with and giving undue support to Kayode Aroloye to enable him contest for the stool in violation of the Registered Chieftaincy Declaration and the Chiefs Law of the state.

They said the declaration spelt out that only biological sons of previous holders of the Owa title were eligible to ascend the throne.

The family expressed concern that despite what it described as the clear legal position, the ministry had allegedly continued to accord recognition and assurances to Prince Aroloye.

READ ALSO: The men who ruined a republic

It warned that any attempt to foist an ineligible person on the ruling house could cause crisis, breach of peace and possibly a breakdown of law and order in the community.

Recall that the disputed stool became vacant following the death of Oba Aroloye in July 2024 at the age of 102.

Following his demise, the ruling house formally notified the state government through the ministry and sought approval to begin the process of selecting a successor, in line with tradition and the law.

They said the ministry, in their letter dated June 4, 2025, directed the Chairman of Idanre Local Government to convey government approval for the commencement of the selection process in accordance with the Registered Chieftaincy Declaration and the government’s White Paper on the Morgan Chieftaincy Review Commission of 1981.

According to them, the documents recognise only one ruling house, the Owa’s House and clearly outline the criteria for eligibility.

The family further alleged plans to sideline the legally recognised kingmakers by appointing warrant chiefs to influence the selection process.

Citing the Chiefs Law, they argued that warrant chiefs could only be appointed where existing kingmakers were unable to form a quorum, noting that nine of the 12 recognised kingmakers were alive and capable of carrying out their constitutional responsibilities

Describing the alleged moves as unlawful and provocative, the family called on Governor Aiyedatiwa to intervene and direct the ministry to strictly comply with the extant laws guiding the selection of traditional rulers.

“Consequent upon the above, we appeal to Your Excellency to call the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to order and direct it to adhere to the extant Registered Chieftaincy Declaration of Owa of Idanre. It is only in this regard that enduring peace can be sustained in Idanre,” the petition added.

They, however, expressed confidence that the governor would uphold the rule of law and take steps to prevent any action capable of destabilising the community.

However, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Amidu Takuro, dismissed the claims when contacted for reactions.
