    OPEN LETTER TO TINUBU AND GOVERNOR’S

    I did not support Tinubu right from the APC primary, I supported Professor Osibanjo and if opportunity arises between the two of them I will still support Osibanjo. I also supported Peter Obi in the general election, but after the general election has been held, winner has been declared by INEC and affirmed by the highest court in the land , the supreme Court of Nigeria, all we need to do as patriotic citizen is to support the government and criticize constructively when necessary but not to plan to destabilize the country because you do not like someone or the person you  prefer did not win.
    Is there hunger in the land? Yes, there is hunger. Is there hardship in the land? Yes, there is hardship? What are the  causes of  hunger and hardship?
    Causes of hunger and hardship are:

    1. Insecurity

    2. Removal of fuel subsidy.


    INSECURITY:


    “The insecurity situation in the country is taking its toll on farming activities as many small and large scale farmers in crisis-prone areas are abandoning their farms in fear for their lives, kidnapping, farm equipment and produce thefts, among others.
    Our Agric Editor, who has been monitoring the worrying situation, reports that what seemed to be a threat mainly to farmers in the northern part of the country initially, is now assuming a national outlook with many of their southern counterparts being attacked on their farms.
    Stakeholders in the agric sector have expressed concerns that if the ugly situation is not adequately addressed and quickly, too, the country’s effort towards attaining self-sufficient in food production would continue to suffer. – Daily Trust Newspaper ( 7 Sept; 2019).
    The insecurity in our farms that made the farmers not to be able to go to farm started in some few states like Benue, Taraba, Plateau, Kaduna before it spread to almost every part of the country. In elementary economics that we were taught about the law of Demand and Supply, if there are  scarcity of goods,  demand will be   higher than the supply,and  definitely there will be increase in price.
    What is the solution?
    The solution is with the President and all the state governors to strategize on the security security situation in the county particularly on our farms and farmers because the terrorists ( bandits) are preventing the farmers to go their farms, causing hardship on the people and using it as a weapon to attract more people to join them in their atrocities.
    Another solution pending the time there will be increase in harvest , government at all level should create many centers where people can go and buy groceries at subsidized prices . This should be among the short term solutions because the history of subsidy in our country is not palatable. Probably with your NIN and  voters card people can go to any of the centres and buy specified quantity of grains. This should be an alternative to the issue of sharing of food as palliative in which many people will not benefit.
    Another solution to have food security and reduce hunger in the land is to checked those that are taking our farm produce to other countries. It is good for our economy for our people to be importing  food and farm produce to other countries as many countries of the world are facing food shortages but we have to secure our home before we think of earning foreign exchange from agriculture. For now, Nigeria custom should permit those that want to bring  food to the country but deny those that want to take our agricultural food out of the country. There is available market here (250M people) for them to sell to and earn their money , then when we have food sufficient, we can start to export.
    Another long term solution is to convert the National Youth Service corp to ‘National Youth  Service Crops’. According to the available data Nigeria Universities and polytechnics admitted close to  2 million students and produce about 600,000 graduates. Can you imagine the tons  of food 600,000 graduate deployed to farm, provided with land, tools and seedling with increase in monthly alloweee can produce in a year.  Whatever that is produce in each of their farms should also belong to the  corp members in which government or individual can buy from them. At the end of the service year, this will entize many of them to agriculture, solve the problem of unemployment and the same time make the country to be  food sufficient and reduce hunger and poverty in the land.

    FUEL SUBSIDY: Since the beginning of the 4th Republic in 1999, all our Presidents have canvassed and tried to remove fuel subsidy. “Subsidy does not get to the poor; the middle and upper classes are the real beneficiaries. It is clearly unsustainable, subsidy in 2011 alone so far is over N1.3trillion, which is higher than our capital budget. Evidence shows that the price of fuel in Nigeria is below both the African and international average”.–  Dr Okojo Iweala in December 2011.
    Moreover, towards the  2023 Presidential election, the eventual winner Bola Tinubu, the second and third runner up, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi all campaigned that fuel subsidy will be removed . Peter Obi in one of his engagement with the people anchored by Seun Okinbaloye of Channels tv said and I quote *” subsidy itself is an organized crime and I can not allow it to stay a day longer”.*
    Consequently, all our leader cannot be wrong and wicked to deliberately want to punish us by taking away the subsidy.

    Solutions:


    What government should have done can still be done to ameliorate the cost and the consequential effect of subsidy that would have benefitted the majority of the people is for the governor of each state to subsidized transportation fare in their states. The greatest beneficiary of the removal of subsidy is the state government  with the increment in FAAC and they should have subsidized transportation in their states and this would have reduce the cost of transporting farm produce and cost of transporting commuter  from one place to another within the state or outside the state.
    Another solution to  ameliorate the effect of subsidy is the alternative to petrol which is Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) . The federal government through the Compressed Natural Gas initiative as reported by Punch Newspaper of 28th June, 2024 that the federal government will subsidized the conversion of vehicle to gas by 50%. That is the vehicle that should have cost #1.2m to convert, will pay #600,000. This is good but government have to do more. Government should have and can still ask the CNG initiative to give a timeline of 6 months, for  instance from now till January 2025 for those that want to convert their vehicle to gas to do so at no cost. Many Nigerians are still being sceptical about the conversion, many does not have #600,000 for the conversion. Making it free for the set of those that want to convert within 6 months will entize many vehicle owners to embrace it and also help in reducing the cost of transportation and ameliorate the suffering of the masses.
    The student loan is a good development that will go a long way to reduce poverty , reduce illiteracy, and school drop out in our county .
    The consumer credit is also a good initiative if it is well managed, it will reduce the burden of looking for money to buy everything people need and sometimes involve in corrupt practices to satisfy their needs.
    In conclusion, I want to appeal to all my fellow citizens to embrace dialogue with FG, and particularly engaged more with the  state government and state assemblies they are to free and dictatorial. Almost all the civil society we have in the county focused their attention on the federal government and 98% of the total population of Nigeria are in the states.
    President Tinubu should try and communicate directly with Nigerians and continue to take those tough decisions but with dialogue and understanding of the people.

We must not allow ourselves to be manipulated, nor should we engage in actions that could undermine our nation’s progress.

    President Tinubu, though newly in office, has already made significant strides to address the pressing issues affecting our communities. He is working tirelessly with a team of dedicated professionals to improve our country. Criticizing the government at this early stage is premature. We must not jeopardize the positive developments and potential benefits that are on the horizon.

    The lessons from the End SARS protest are clear: such movements can be hijacked by those with ulterior motives, leading to chaos and setbacks. Instead of protesting, I encourage you to channel your energy into constructive engagement with the government.
