ASUS ROG Strix G16: Performance

The ASUS ROG Strix G16 G614 is an impressively configured machine that benefits significantly from packing in a high-end combo CPU-GPU. The CPU is Intel Core i7-13650HX CPU, part of Intel’s new Raptor Lake mobile CPU line-up. This processor, built using a 10-nanometer manufacturing process, integrates six Performance Cores (P-cores) and eight Efficiency (E-cores) and has a maximum of 20 threads. The combination of an Intel Core i9 and a NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 laptop means modern games barely present any challenge for the G614. A natural caveat with most gaming laptops is that excellent performance is often hindered by two issues: fan noise and chassis heat. The ASUS ROG Strix G16 didn’t have either of these issues, with the combination i9-4080 ensuring the laptop never struggled with performance in any department. Given that this is often the primary concern with gaming laptops, seeing the Strix G16 largely unaffected was a relief.

Display Performance:

The ASUS ROG Nebula branding may evoke thoughts of deep space, but it denotes the G16’s remarkable features: a QHD+ display with a 240 Hz refresh rate and a rapid three-millisecond response time. This resolution, refresh rate, and response time blend are among the finest available today. It typically yields intricately detailed visuals without the drawbacks of screen artifacts like glitching or tearing. It’s worth noting that achieving consistently smooth performance on 4K displays can still challenge the hardware capabilities of certain laptops at present.

The G16’s display has been honed for exceptional performance. The G16’s display is also Pantone Validated for those who want to use it for design work. As we’ll see in the performance section, the laptop is powerful enough for this work.

Gaming performance

The GeForce RTX 4060 discreet GPU in our review model is a step from the entry-level GeForce RTX 4050 in Nvidia’s mobile GPU line-up. One of its biggest drawcards for gamers for this new video card is its 24 ray-tracing cores, which supercharge the rendering of light and shading in games and 3D applications, allowing for more realism than was ever possible. The GeForce RTX 4060 also supports DirectX 12 Ultimate, the latest version of the DirectX API and the one that will ultimately power a whole new generation of AAA games. It’s a decent piece of hardware with some good future-proofing support. This particular RTX 4060 GPU was tuned to a TGP of 140 watts, which is the maximum possible.

Battery Life

the ASUS ROG Strix G16 is built to perform as a high-speed, latency-free gaming laptop and does this very well. But you can also use it as a daily device. It’s small and portable enough to fit in a backpack, and the power brick isn’t too unwieldy. The device’s battery also supports this approach, with a surprisingly long life for a gaming laptop. With a capacity of 90 watt-hours, the ASUS ROG Strix G16 battery should provide good runtimes away from the socket. However, the notebook only achieves more than nine hours in the WiFi web surfing test with active graphics switching.

Conclusion

With the mobile Nvidia GeForce RTX 4080, the Asus ROG Stix G16 hits the sweet spot between performance and cooling. The G16 also does not have to shy away from direct comparison with its supposedly stronger family member, the ROG Strix Scar 18 with its RTX 4090, as most benchmarks of the two laptops are very close. Moreover, the G16 should be significantly cheaper.

Considering its recent launch, the ASUS ROG Strix G16 in Nigeria is currently unavailable but should be available across ASUS Nigeria partner stores from December 2023.
