  • Life Insurance vs Health Insurance: Which is Most Important?

Most times, we are caught up in the dilemma of choosing what insurance policy to secure. With a number of insurance policy types like, Travel Insurance, Auto Insurance; and many more, choosing what’s relevant and what to ditch, may prove cumbersome and tedious.

In this post, I will not outrightly be telling you what insurance policy to choose between life and health. I will simply provide insights into their properties and components, forming a backdrop to complement your decision as a prospective policyholder.

I might strike a chord if I mentioned that one form of insurance policy should not necessarily be chosen over another. Both death and illness are uncertainties that should be covered. Neither of them bears an announcement letter, indicating its date of arrival and what not. The steering principle has always existed – To painstakingly weigh one’s options when considering an insurance policy.

There are a number of factors to consider: For instance, you should consider the number of dependents or your financial capabilities. In the long run, you would be responsible for determining the most consequential insurance policy as it resonates with your need(s) and sensibilities. This could also appeal to those who are looking to retire.

    The Life Insurance Policy

If you’re considering choosing a life insurance policy, you should note that it serves a different purpose from the health insurance policy.

In the case of a life insurance policy, the beneficiary nominated by the policyholder is compensated in cases of a demise.

Who should secure this policy? If you have people depending on you, life insurance policy looks like what you should secure. As a young adult, it’s possible you’re the breadwinner of the family; responsibilities aren’t just for the old.

    The Health Insurance Policy

This covers medical expenses incurred by the policyholder. Medical bills including prescription fees, counselling fees and the likes are also accounted for.

If you’re considering securing a health insurance policy, one of its goals is to ensure that people can afford their medical expenses without compromising on good health. Other than this, there are a number of reasons why you should consider health insurance.

Young persons are usually associated with this kind of health policy because it is short-termed. Moreover, if you do not have kids, securing the life insurance policy may not be needful, if you are being cost-conscious. This is, however, not a getaway to securing both policies if need be. If you’re looking to secure an insurance policy as a millennial, you should check out these bespoke tips here.

    Conclusion:

Both policies are inevitable. it’s not extraneous to secure both the health insurance and life insurance policy. As a matter of fact, we highly recommend it because uncertainties are associated with both illnesses and death.

There’s a saying that, “costs are like fingernails; you should cut them accordingly”. What implication does this have for you as a policyholder? It is possible to secure both life and health insurance policies without necessarily breaking the bank.

  • HUAWEI Y9s: Everything you need to know

Based on deep insights of market trends, Huawei has a strong understanding of what younger consumers are looking for – they put a strong emphasis on product appearance and uniqueness and want to be entertained while enjoying a premium user experience. In response to this, Huawei launched the HUAWEI Y9s to meet younger users’ requirements for smartphone products.

A phone that is all screen

The HUAWEI Y9s is a big phone. Not only does it have a HUAWEI Ultra Fullview display that is 6.59 inches, but it is also free of notches, holes or sliders. HUAWEI Y9s sports a 6.59-inch negative LCD display (2340×1080) with a 1,500:1 contrast ratio. It has a wide color gamut of 85% (typical value) and can display 16.7 million colours. In addition to natural color reproduction, the screen brings out the finest details and make colors more saturated and vibrant.

Instead of using the mainstream notch design, dewdrop and hole-punch display, HUAWEI Y9s uses a FullView Display with a pop-up camera design to deliver a true FullView Display experience. With a boundary-free screen and sharp details, the display takes the smartphone viewing experience to a higher level.

HUAWEI Y9s features a micro-seam earpiece and a hidden ambient light sensor to make upper and bottom bezels thinner. Y9s has a 30% thinner top bezel and a 6% thinner bottom bezel. Along with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9, the screen-to-body ratio is increased to 91% (AA/CG). Such ultimate bezel-less design breaks the boundaries of a screen to bring users a wider and brighter FullView Display experience.

A cool auto pop-up selfie camera

With a large bezel-less display, Huawei had to find a way to add a front-facing camera. The result? A 16-megapixel camera with F2.2 aperture that raises out of the phone’s top edge when needed and then closes after you’ve finished snapping selfies. Huawei also designed an intelligent fall protection detector to retract the camera when it detects any free falls.

The front camera can also identify instantly and accurately eight scenarios of different objects and scenes thanks to artificial intelligence. The latter also implements diverse photographic effects, such as butterfly lighting, by reconstructing the light source to provide 3D portrait lighting for selfies and portraits.

48MP AI Triple Camera in the back

The AI Triple Camera system includes a 48MP Main Camera, an 8MP 120-degree Ultra Wide Angle Camera and a 2MP Depth Camera. With a native resolution of 48MP, the main camera enables users to create clear images and capture more amazing details.

The main camera is a 6 Plastic (6P) lens. Compared with a 5P Lens, it can capture more light, which gives the camera a higher resolution and contrast to further improve image quality. In addition, the main camera uses a 1/2-inch sensor to provide greater light sensitivity, allowing the device to produce enhanced image quality in low-light environments.

The practical 8MP Ultra Wide Angle Camera offers a 120-degree field-of-view and supports Ultra Wide Angle Video. It is 53.8% wider than the traditional 78-degree lens, almost doubling the viewing angle. Whether for wild nature scenes or group photos, the Ultra Wide Angle Camera can capture a wider view and more fun.
Meanwhile, the 2MP Depth Camera works with the Main Camera to measure the distance between the subject and the camera. By doing this, it can create professional bokeh effects to highlight the subject just like using a wide aperture lens

    Premium power
Huawei added a massive 4,000mAh battery to HUAWEI Y9s. At the core of this device, is Kirin 710F chipset, and the operating system is EMUI 9. In addition, this phone comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM good enough storage for all your pictures, videos and files.

Side-Mounted Fingerprint: Unlock in 0.3 Seconds

HUAWEI Y9s adopts a side-fingerprint design, which combines the power button and fingerprint unlock button into one. This design ensures the integrity of the front and back panels, and also makes the idea of “using one button for multiple purposes” a reality. Slightly tap the button to lock/unlock the screen. Press and hold for one second to activate Voice Assistant. Press and hold for up to three seconds to switch off the phone. In terms of unlock speed, HUAWEI Y9s provides instant recognition and unlock, which takes only 0.31 seconds with just one tap.

Premium Quality at an Affordable Price
From the inside out, the new HUAWEI Y9s is optimised to provide a combination of premium design and powerful performance at an affordable price.

HUAWEI Y9s features a Fullview Display with an integrated pop-up camera. It also learning from Huawei flagship’s optical design concept and uses a glass back to re-interpret the beauty of salt flats. Besides, it brings upgraded features, such as a 48MP rear AI Triple Camera system. As the latest addition to the HUAWEI Y Series, Y9s will take entry-level smartphones to the next level, delivering more fun and enjoyment to users.

The HUAWEI Y9s is now available in Jumia, SLOT and Pointek nationwide.

  • Politics of Economics: 2020 ushers Nigeria’s consequential decade

    By J Dare

By the end of 2019, our collective love of iPhones and iPads made Apple a U$1.3 trillion company – and yes, a trillion dollars, with over US$200 billion cash in the bank. Contextually, it means Apple’s market capitalization is equivalent to half of Africa’s total gross domestic product (GDP) in 2019.

US$200 billion indicates enough cash-on-hand to finance Africa’s entire infrastructure deficit for a year.  A close second is Microsoft with US$1.2 trillion; Google and Amazon each hover around US$ 900billion. The collective market capitalization of these four companies – parts of the so-called “Big Tech”— is bigger than the GDP of India or Africa.

Welcome to the ‘new world’ of economic power fueled by disruptions and unprecedented corporate influence. In this new decade, the pace of technology will not only deepen disruptions, the pace of disruptions may create inadvertent socioeconomic problems than opportunities for Africa, including Nigeria.

The great news is Nigeria can still mitigate the imminent risks of disruptions from Artificial Intelligence, Fintech, Intelligent Automation, and Autonomous Mobility with deliberate and committed government efforts.

In a global contest of innovative feats, Nigeria as a nation, needs to define her role in the ‘new world’.  Today, the world recognizes the remarkable achievements of creative Nigerians in global entertainment – Music, Nollywood, and Fashion. The accomplished Doctors of American cities, Ivy League professionals of European cities, and the audacious business traders of Asian capitals make up a stellar group of Nigeria Diaspora – a group whose immense generosity amounts to more than US$ 20 billion in annual remittances – for aging parents, property developments, extended family support, and businesses.

Yet, Nigeria’s role in this ‘new world’ of disruptions cannot solely rely on the accomplishments of the diaspora and Nollywood.  As part of the “last frontier” in the global economy, the world is coming to invest, experiment, and sell technology to Nigerians. These foreign direct and indirect investments will likely be underpinned by strategic interests that do not always align with Nigeria’s economic interest.
The investments will take advantage of loopholes in fair competition, quality standards, employment standards, licensing, and fragmented markets.  It may not inherently result in mass upward mobility, knowledge transfer, and financial inclusion of average Nigerians. In other words, foreign investments that come with only foreign senior leadership, minimal local content participation, and stifle local competition will likely create future social conflicts and broaden income disparity.

    Old development models are obsolete.

According to the African Development Bank, “the continent’s infrastructure needs amount to $130–170 billion a year, with a financing gap in the range $68–$108 billion”.   By 2050, Nigeria’s population is expected to double; in 10 years, Lagos’ already strained infrastructure will see significant population growth from migration. Housing deficits will sharply increase in urban areas without mortgage facilities; sanitation and congestion will pose health risks.  Here is the straight talk: Nigeria does not currently generate enough oil revenues or tax revenues to close the infrastructure and housing deficits.

The great news is the world has more than enough capital to close Africa’s infrastructure deficit through smart partnerships of Private Infrastructure. So, what is the solution? Nigeria needs to establish a transparent and well-capitalized quasi-government infrastructure bank with autonomy to operate, raise capital, support credit enhancements, and expedite bankability thresholds.

By reducing project development and capital-raising cycles for credible project sponsors, private capital will accelerate private infrastructure participation alongside the Buhari Administration’s public infrastructure goals.  The developments of vast infrastructure will take at least 10 years – with available capital, completed studies, and legal framework – this is the decade to spearhead deliberate efforts to close these deficits.

    Incentivize a Venture Capital culture.

In the past few years, young Nigerian-founders have made headlines with investments from Silicon Valley, London, Asia, and South Africa. These headlines have inspired the often overlooked and unconnected young minds on human possibilities. Young people are forming communities of tech enthusiasts and change-makers with increasing global validations of Paystack, Flutterwave, Interswitch and others.
Yet, raising capital from abroad or winning the Y Combinator and TechStars ‘lottery’ for mentorship is still impractical for most young Nigerians.  Therefore, new legal frameworks and laws are recommended to incentivize corporate entities, non-financial institutions, and wealthy Nigerians to invest in the aspirations of average Nigerians: startups and informal traders.  Venture capital shall significantly reduce the lending gaps for small-medium enterprises, capital mismatch, and high-cost of capital that have beleaguered local innovation.

Invariably, we must double our investments in primary and secondary education for 21st century skills set and ingenuity.

    Our decade to build.

I have always admired the Nigerian work ethic and creativity if given the right opportunities. The average Nigerian values the dignity of work!  We have built communities, industries, and overcame big challenges despite the odds. With clear vision and public sector partnership, we can build our own renaissance to compete with Asia’s rise. We, as a nation, must send strong signals through deliberate government policies of equality that the young dreams in Makoko slums are as valid as those in the high-rise of Banana Island.  We must extend a hand of recognition to the young commodity traders of Kano and Benue with big aspirations of someday competing with Dangote Sugar.  The young girls of Niger Delta creeks that want to study Biotechnology and Engineering to foster clean energy in their forlorn villages. And the children of roadside chefs in Bodija and Jalingo that believe in the seemingly improbable journey of becoming Governors and the President should become common success stories.

Let this decade be our decade! The decade we build for the future population growth and co-lead Africa’s imminent disruptions. The decade we shift our minds from senseless ethnic and religious divides to common purpose. The decade we imbue gender, social class and ethnic equality in our institutions to harness the potentials of all our people for our country – and to shape and disrupt the world.

  • NGO battles FGM adherents

    By Maxwell Jelil

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is illegal in Nigeria, but in parts of Kwara State, it is still ongoing.

A non governmental organisation, Kick Against Genital Multiple ( KAGM) is wagging a war against the FGM.

Executive director of KAGM, Mr. Funso Alimi said the body will put every resources to end the debasement of women.

He said many communities in Nigeria still engaged in the age-long practice.

In Kwara State for instance, the family of Arogunde Adeniyi Oladipupo of Idiogun, Offa town engages in female circumcision.

It is customary to do circumcision for all female children.

With the attendant pains, infection and disease like HIV/AIDS contacted through circumcision, the campaign to end it became more potent.

Some bold people are resisting practice, a position that put them at conflict with the adherents of FGM.

Oladipupo’s refusal to allow them performed FGM with their daughter drew the ire of the family head and this resulted in conflicts.

His father, a strong politician is battling the Oladipupo to enforce the FGM. The wife ran with the grand child to her father’s house, but the husband father went for them.

This forced Oladipupo to flee to Ghana, in order to protect the grand child. Despite this, it has been cases of threat to their lives.

The battle has being raging and worrisome. They have been reliably informed that the circumcision exercise will continue to fester because of the huge wealth at the disposal of the head of the family.

According to Alimi: “We are determined to do what ‘End Cutting Girls’ are doing to put an end to FGM in Nigeria are doing. It is no longer acceptable to subject the girl child to this barbaric act.

“We recently visited the family of Arogundade Adeniyi Oladipupo in Kwara who are still practising FGM. We let them know the danger and why it must end. We shall prosecutes families that refuse to end the barbaric acts.”

Kwara State Police authorities are aware of the development and willing to act on petition brought before them.

He said: “No convictions have been made because only few states have ratified the law. Much advocacy is needed to make people aware of the act.”

A 2017 report by the UN Population Fund estimates that one in ten women between the ages of 15 and 49 have undergone FGM in Nigeria.

The report says that the practice has reached alarming rates in six Nigerian states, including Kwara. According to the report, Kwara and states in the North Central are fighting hard to end FGM.

However, Nigeria’s First Lady Aisha Buhari had called for the elimination of the practice since 2016.
