  • Abia Warriors target  Rivers United’s scalp in Aba

Abia Warriors target  Rivers United’s scalp in Aba

Matchday 16 of the Nigeria Premier Football League arrives at a critical juncture in a season already defined by tight margins, surprise contenders and shifting momentum across the log. With the title race wide open and relegation battles intensifying, every fixture this weekend carries renewed significance , writes TUNDE LIADI.

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) enters Matchweek 16 this weekend with a blockbuster fixture in Umuahia, where Abia Warriors host the formidable Rivers United in what stands out as the star attraction of the round.

Other high-profile encounters include champions Remo Stars welcoming former champions Enyimba to Abeokuta, while second-placed Nasarawa United set an ambush for in-form Shooting Stars in a spicy Monday night showdown in Lafia.

Eight fixtures headline  tomorrow’s programme, with two more to follow on Monday in Ilorin and Lafia. The weekend action kicks off in Maiduguri as El Kanemi Warriors lock horns with Barau by 3pm at the El Kanemi Stadium. With the Borno Army sitting 15th on the log with 18 points, they desperately need maximum points to steer clear of relegation worries. Barau, 18th  with 16 points, will be equally fired up to avoid sinking deeper, especially with a pending home fixture against Rivers United scheduled for December 18th.

Kwara United face Niger Tornadoes in Ilorin aiming to bounce back from a narrow 3-2 defeat to Barau in Kano. A win would drag the Harmony Boys toward mid-table safety, but Tornadoes—fresh off a morale-boosting victory over Remo Stars—will fancy their chances of causing an upset.

Champions Remo Stars must forget their recent slump as they battle Enyimba at the MKO Abiola Stadium. The Sky Blue Stars have lost back-to-back games against Tornadoes and Shooting Stars, piling pressure on Daniel Ogunmodede’s men to respond. Enyimba ended their own bad spell with a 2-1 win over Rangers but must defy a poor recent record against Remo Stars. Interim coach Lawrence Ukaegbu and incoming boss Ayodeji Ayeni have a daunting task in Abeokuta.

Rangers, woke up late in Aba last weekend, must now redirect their frustration toward Bayelsa United as they attempt to revive their push to the top. The Prosperity Boys failed to beat Katsina United at home last weekend and need to recover lost points in Enugu.

In Bauchi, 12th -placed Wikki Tourists—fresh off a 4-0 pummelling by Bendel Insurance—host league leaders Ikorodu City. Abdu Maikaba’s men will be eager to appease angry supporters with a statement performance, but Ikorodu City have shown impressive composure both home and away.

The headline fixture comes from Umuahia, where Abia Warriors, now sixth with 23 points, hope to revive their season after a slide that has seen them collect just two points from their last four matches. Their last victory dates back to November 2 in Minna. Facing a Rivers United side unbeaten away after 13 matches and with just one league defeat all season, the Umuchineke Boys must produce their best to halt the Pride of Rivers. Rivers United’s domestic dominance comes in sharp contrast to their CAF Champions League struggles. The question remains: can Abia Warriors end their unbeaten away run?

Elsewhere, Kano Pillars host Kun Khalifat in Katsina with the awareness that anything short of victory worsens their crisis. Plateau United face Warri Wolves in Jos, hoping to put an end to their disappointing run. Monday’s action begins in Ilorin, where Katsina United seek back-to-back wins at their adopted ground as they host plucky Bendel Insurance. The final game of Matchweek 16 sees high-flying Nasarawa United tackle Shooting Stars. A win for the Solid Miners could send them back to the summit—if Ikorodu City stumble in Bauchi

  • FULL LIST: 2026 World Cup new entrants

FULL LIST: 2026 World Cup new entrants

With a record 48 national teams set to compete, the 2026 World Cup will offer several countries their first taste of football’s biggest stage.

While Brazil have played in all 22 previous tournaments, 132 of FIFA’s 211 member associations have never participated.

    Cape Verde

With a population of around 600,000, Cape Verde, an archipelago off Africa’s west coast, became the second smallest country to reach a World Cup finals after Iceland in 2018, when they qualified in October. However, that record was soon surpassed by Curacao.

Cape Verde earned their spot by defeating Eswatini, capping a remarkable rise in football over the past 40 years.

The nation played its first World Cup qualifiers in 1990, gradually building a competitive team with players of Cape Verdean descent from around the world. Their current squad includes six Dutch-born players and one Irish-born player: Shamrock Rovers defender Roberto Lopes. Lopes, 33, was born in Dublin but qualifies for Cape Verde through his father and was recruited via LinkedIn.

    Curacao

The tiny Caribbean island of Curacao will become the smallest nation ever to play in a World Cup after drawing with Steve McClaren’s Jamaica to secure qualification. The record previously belonged to Iceland in 2018, but Curacao, with a population of just over 150,000—comparable to Cambridge or Huddersfield—and a land area of 171 square miles, surpasses them in smallness.

Former England manager McClaren resigned after Jamaica, needing a win for their first World Cup appearance since 1998, drew 0-0, including a late penalty that was overturned by VAR. Curacao’s coach Dick Advocaat, absent from the match for personal reasons, will become the oldest manager at a World Cup at 78, surpassing Otto Rehhagel’s record with Greece in 2010.

Curacao, located 37 miles off the coast of Venezuela, only became a country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands in 2010, following the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles. Ten years ago, they were ranked 150th in FIFA’s world rankings; today, they sit 82nd.

    Jordan

Jordan has also secured its first-ever World Cup qualification. The Arab nation first entered the qualifiers 40 years ago but had never advanced until now. They clinched their spot by finishing second in AFC Group B, behind South Korea.

In 2016, former Tottenham, Portsmouth, and QPR manager Harry Redknapp briefly oversaw Jordan’s World Cup qualifying campaign, recording an 8-0 win over Bangladesh and a 5-1 loss to Australia.

    Uzbekistan

Uzbekistan has also progressed from the Asian qualifiers for the first time. They previously came close to qualifying for Germany 2006 and Brazil 2014, falling in the final rounds. The team features notable talents, including Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov, the first Uzbek to play in the Premier League.

    Who else could join them?

Suriname narrowly missed their first World Cup appearance after leading their qualifying group for most of the campaign. A final-round defeat to Guatemala allowed Panama, who beat El Salvador 3-0, to secure automatic qualification.

Suriname will have another chance in the inter-confederation play-off in March; a successful campaign would make them the lowest-ranked team ever to qualify, currently sitting 123rd in the world. The South American nation has a population of just over 600,000, roughly the size of Leeds.

Also participating in the inter-confederation play-off is New Caledonia. The French territory, comprising dozens of islands in the South Pacific, has a population just under 300,000. Their squad consists largely of part-time players from the 10-team New Caledonia Super Ligue and others who compete no higher than the fifth tier of French football.

  • Osimhen’s bicycle kick secures 3-2 win for Galatasaray over Samsunspor

Osimhen’s bicycle kick secures 3-2 win for Galatasaray over Samsunspor

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen scored the crucial winner as Galatasaray survived a late fight back from Samsunspor to secure a thrilling 3-2 victory in their Super Lig clash on Friday.

Galatasaray came into the match looking to end a two-game winless run after a Champions League defeat to Union St.Gilloise and a draw with Fenerbahçe. Determined to end that run, they made a brilliant start with Leroy Sané opening the scoring in the eight minute.

Victor Osimhen then doubled the host’s lead in the 29th minute of the game, receiving a superb pass from Sané before finishing past Okan Kocuk, making it 2-0 and giving Galatasaray a comfortable lead going into half time.

Samsunspor started to dominate the game in the second half in search for a goal and they got rewarded in the 56th minute of the game when Anthony Musaba scored to reduce the deficit, making the scoreline 2-1.

Emre Kilinc then scored the equaliser in the 88th minute, curling in a brilliant ball from the edge of the box to beat goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir. However, in the dying minutes, Osimhen scored with a brilliant bicycle kick, securing all three points for the hosts.

The result means that league leaders Galatasaray are up to 36 points in 15 games, increasing their gap over second-placed Fenerbahçe to four points. Meanwhile, Samsunspor remain fifth on the table with 25 points in the same number of games.

Osimhen’s brace means he has now scored 11 goals for Galatasaray this season. He now has five goals in the Super Lig to go with his six Champions League goals. For club and country, the 26-year-old has racked up 16 goals this season.
