  • All eyes on Kennedy Centre as  W’Cup 2026 Draw holds today

All eyes on Kennedy Centre as  W’Cup 2026 Draw holds today

The countdown to the first 48-team World Cup begins in earnest today  as the draw for the 2026 finals takes place in Washington, with Donald Trump set to dominate much of the attention.

The most logistically complex World Cup in history will be held across North America from June 11 to July 19, with 16 more teams added to the global showpiece, up from the 32 nations involved in Qatar in 2022.

Today’s ceremony, at the Kennedy Centre on the banks of the Potomac River, will be a star-studded event but Trump will take centre stage.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has developed a close relationship with Trump, including making several visits to the White House.

Now the US President is widely expected to be the first ever recipient of the FIFA Peace Prize, which will be awarded during the draw ceremony, “to recognize the enormous efforts of those individuals who unite people, bringing hope for future generations,” as Infantino put it.

Even the choice of draw venue is a nod to Trump, who earlier this year installed himself as chairman of the Kennedy Centre, a performing arts venue opened in the early 1970s.

Holding the draw there also means the US capital gets to play an active role in the World Cup itself having been overlooked as a match venue.

The ceremony will be co-hosted by supermodel Heidi Klum and American actor and comedian Kevin Hart, and will feature performances by Village People, Andrea Bocelli and Robbie Williams.

NFL legend Tom Brady, ice hockey icon Wayne Gretzky and former NBA superstar Shaquille O’Neal will be among the stars helping to conduct the draw.

Trump has made the World Cup a centrepiece event of both his second presidency and the 250th anniversary of US independence next year.

But he has not hesitated to inject domestic politics into the preparations, threatening to move World Cup matches from Democratic-run cities if he deems conditions to be “unsafe”.

“I would call Gianni, the head of FIFA, who’s phenomenal, and I would say, let’s move it to another location. And he would do that,” Trump said recently.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum will also be in attendance at the ceremony.

Eleven of the 16 World Cup venues are in the United States, with three in Mexico and two in Canada.

The political element to the draw saw Iran vow to boycott the ceremony because the United States refused to grant visas to several members of its delegation.

Iranian Football Federation president Mehdi Taj denounced the USA’s decision as “purely political”. Iran subsequently announced on Wednesday that it would now send representatives, including head coach Amir Ghalenoei.

Lionel Messi’s Argentina are the reigning champions after winning the World Cup for the third time in Qatar in 2022.

They will be among the top seeds along with European champions Spain, record five-time winners Brazil, France, Germany, England, Portugal, the Netherlands and Belgium. The three host nations complete the first pot of seeds.

The decision to expand the tournament has also cleared the way for several first-time qualifiers, including Cape Verde, Jordan and Curacao.

But it is not to everyone’s liking – “The monster has been unleashed,” is how former FIFA chief Sepp Blatter described the 48-team format in an interview with CBS.

The teams will be split into 12 groups of four, with the top two from each advancing alongside the eight best third-placed sides to the last 32.

For the first time, the draw will be done so as to ensure the four highest-ranked nations are kept apart – Spain, Argentina, France and England will not be able to meet before the semi-finals, if all four top their groups.

Six places at the finals are still to be decided in playoffs, the winners of which will be among the bottom seeds – the favourites will therefore want to avoid Italy, World Cup winners as recently as 2006 but who failed to qualify for the last two tournaments.

The opening match will be held at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, before the tournament unfolds over nearly six weeks, culminating in the final at the MetLife Stadium just outside New York City.

Because of the complexity, teams will only learn the full details of their match venues and kick-off times on Saturday,  a day after the draw.

  • Kano Pillars, Customs, CNS extend dominance at CGC Volleyball Premier League:

Kano Pillars, Customs, CNS extend dominance at CGC Volleyball Premier League:

The intensity of the 2025 Comptroller General of Customs Volleyball Premier League final phase heightened midweek as teams across both the men’s and women’s categories delivered pulsating displays at the indoor sports hall of the Moshood Abiola Stadium, Abuja.

Building on the momentum from Day 1—where CNS Spikers, Nigeria Customs Service, and the Police Force recorded commanding victories—Day 2 produced even more compelling performances, comeback attempts, and tactical master classes as teams continued their push toward the title.

In the Men’s cadre, CNS Spikers showed once again why they are the reigning champions, sweeping aside Kada Kings 3–0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-13). Their ball distribution, service accuracy, and defensive organization proved too much for Kada, who struggled to keep pace as CNS tightened their hold on the competition.

Fellow heavyweights Nigeria Customs Service were equally ruthless, battling past a spirited Offa Volleyball Club to secure a straight-sets victory 3–0 (27-25, 25-15, 25-15). Offa pushed hard in the opening set, forcing deuce, but once Customs settled into rhythm, their power hitting and superior blocking carried them comfortably through the remaining sets.

COAS Spikers, after faltering on Day 1, bounced back strongly with a well-earned 3–1 (25-22, 25-20, 25-21, 25-22) win against NAF Rockets. The soldiers’ side displayed renewed focus and tactical discipline, shrugging off NAF’s attempts at a comeback.

The shock of the day came when Kano Pillars, buoyed by their Day 1 win over COAS, halted the unbeaten run of the Nigeria Police Force, powering to a 3–0 (25-16, 29-27, 25-21) victory. The second set—arguably one of the most dramatic of the tournament so far—saw Police squander multiple set-point opportunities. Pillars’ resilience and composure proved decisive as they tightened their grip to close out the straight-sets win.

In other matches, NSCDC recovered from a disappointing Day 1 showing to defeat Sunshine Spikers 3–0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-19), while Nigeria Correctional Service posted their first win of the final phase, beating UCEM 3–1 (25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 26-24) in a closely fought contest.

The women’s division delivered its fair share of highlights as well, with CNS Spikers Women cruising past Anambra Queens in a commanding 3–0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-16) performance. Their fluid teamwork, fast transitions, and aggressive serves kept Anambra on the back foot throughout.

COAS Spikers Women continued their brilliant start to the final phase with a clean sweep against Olalomi Spikers (25-13, 25-10, 25-16), maintaining their strong push for a podium finish.

The NAF Queens put up one of the most dominant outings of the day, dispatching Wikki Queens 3–0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-11) with a display marked by precision attacking and disciplined blocking.

Reigning women’s champions Nigeria Customs Service also showed their quality, overwhelming Kada Emeralds 3–0 (25-15, 25-6, 25-16). The second set, in which they conceded only six points, underscored their championship pedigree and sheer superiority.

The standout match in the women’s category saw Life Camp edge Benue Queens in a dramatic five-set thriller 3–2 (25-27, 19-25, 25-17, 27-25, 17-15). Life Camp staged a remarkable comeback after losing the first two sets, showing incredible mental strength to clinch a nail-biting decider. The match stood out as one of the most entertaining of the entire tournament so far.

Day 2 affirmed the dominance of tournament favourites CNS Spikers and Nigeria Customs, while Kano Pillars’ victory over the Police added new intrigue to the title race. With several teams now finding form and others desperate to recover from early setbacks, the stage is set for even more intense battles as the 2025 CGC Volleyball Premier League final phase continues in Abuja.

Universal Archival Elders (UAE), an organisation that comprises elders of the popular Kegites Club, has concluded all arrangements to organise a sports programme for the Year 2026 as part of its activities to give back to the Nigerian society.

According to the Archaival Elders, whose members spread across the world, a Universal Archaival Elders Table Tennis Tournament will be held between May and June 2026 in Nigeria as part of their contribution to foster unity among the people in the country.

The motive behind this tournament is to use sports, which have been a tool of unity among Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic and religious backgrounds, and to further cement the spirit of unity in this trying period the nation is passing through.

The Universal Archaivar Elders, otherwise known as “Ẹgbẹ́ Àgbà Elemu” had a Zoom meeting on Tuesday to unveil the Mascot for the tournament. The meeting was attended by some of the archival entities, Mr. Enitan Oshodi, Executive Vice President of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), Nigerian table tennis legends and members of the sporting media.

The Mascot for the maiden edition of the table tennis tournament depicts the unifying factor of sports among Nigerians and also shows the unity in the country’s diversity.

According to Yomi Opakunle, the tournament will be strictly by members of the Kegites Club in Nigeria across four regions of the nation: West, East, North and South.

“We will have regional preliminaries after which regional champions will now converge to compete at the national finals,” Opakunle said, while disclosing that handsome prize monies will be given to winners.

Executive Vice President of the ITTF, Enitan Oshodi, said the world table tennis regulator is glad to have the initiative of the Universal Archaivar Elders Table Tennis Tournament coming up in Nigeria at this period to give the sport more popularity in the country. He was also excited to see table tennis legends attending the meeting.

Oshodi promised that he would see to the support being given to the organisers in the area of equipment and other technical logistics.

“I am so happy that this tournament is coming up in a year that the ITTF is celebrating 100 years of competitive table tennis in the world. This is a big commendation,” he said.

A member of the archival entities, Olujimi Oluyinka, said the Universal Archaivar Elders decided to identify with their roots by coming to Nigeria to organise the table tennis tournament for the youth.

“We want to tell the world and change the narrative that Kegites Club has gone beyond drinking and dancing, it has also gone beyond one single hand salute, we want to affect humanity positively, and sports is a veritable platform to achieve this unity in diversity we are known for.

  • Salah does not have ‘unlimited credit’ at Liverpool, Van Dijk says

Salah does not have ‘unlimited credit’ at Liverpool, Van Dijk says

Virgil van Dijk says Mohamed Salah’s omission from Liverpool’s team for a second successive match shows no player at the club has “unlimited credit”.

The Egypt international was an unused substitute for Sunday’s win at West Ham and was on the bench for the 1-1 draw at home to Sunderland on Wednesday.

It was the first time in his Anfield career that he had not started in back-to-back league matches.

The forward was brought on for the second half against Sunderland but struggled to make an impact and is now goalless in five matches.

Salah has scored just four Premier League goals for the struggling defending champions this season, in stark contrast to his haul of 29 last season.

Liverpool captain Van Dijk was asked after the Sunderland draw whether Salah’s omission had sent a message to the dressing room.

“That’s always been the case,” he said. “It’s not like you have unlimited credit, everyone has to perform.

“Mo has been doing that but the manager made that decision in the last two games. We all want the best for the club.

Read Also: NSBMB :NFF welcomes scientific body to boost national  teams

“I am pretty sure Mo will still be a big part of what we are trying to achieve because he is an amazing player and he has shown it consistently.”

Van Dijk praised playmaker Florian Wirtz, whose shot deflected in off Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele for a late Liverpool equaliser that left them eighth in the table.

The German, who joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer transfer window for £116 million ($155 million), is showing encouraging signs after a tough start to life at Anfield.

“There’s a very good reason why a club like us bought him,” said Van Dijk. “He’s an outstanding, world-class player, in my eyes, who can only become even better but it will take a bit of time.

“For him he has to stay level-headed. Don’t get dragged into the outside world of when it’s very good or very bad and don’t get dragged into the numbers game.

“Nowadays there are a lot of eyes on you if you score goals or have an assist or keep clean sheets but it is also about what you see and the contribution you have for the team.”

  • Ruben Amorim: Portuguese league record holder

Ruben Amorim: Portuguese league record holder

There are always many great teams competing in the Portuguese league. The battle for the title is particularly interesting. Fans from all over the world follow it closely. If you are interested in the games of this league, then 1xBet Nigeria registration is what you need. It is quick to complete, after which all you need to do is top up your balance to start playing big.

In the 2023/2024 season, Sporting triumphed in the championship. In that campaign, the team literally left their competitors no chance. One of the main reasons for the team’s success is considered to be the excellent coaching work of Ruben Amorim. This is the second time he has led Sporting to victory in the Primeira Liga.

Amorim managed to take Sporting to a whole new level. He took charge of the team in March 2020. Before his arrival, the Lisbon club had not won the Primeira Liga since the 2001/2002 season. Many fans had lost faith in the possibility of success after such a long hiatus, but the coach restored their faith in the club.

As for Amorim, in his first full season, he ended the club’s 19-year wait for the championship title, losing only one game, and also won the Portuguese League Cup. Then, in the 2023/2024 season, at the age of 39, he became the youngest coach to win the Portuguese championship twice.

Thanks to this, the coach has already made history in the Primeira Liga. However, this marked the end of his career at Sporting. In the fall of 2024, the coach accepted an offer from Manchester United and took charge of the team, although he was unable to achieve the same impressive results in England.

What helped the coach achieve this?

Amorim demonstrated his coaching talent early on. And he didn’t just achieve one-off success. It’s easy to follow his team today at the reliable 1xBet Nigeria bookmaker, where registration is quick and available to all adult users.

Returning to Amorim and his achievements, it is worth noting that the coach made history in the Portuguese championship thanks to:

    1. Ability to build team play. Under his leadership, Sporting played exciting football.
    2. Ability to find weaknesses in opponents. Sporting often exploited these weaknesses, putting pressure on their opponents and achieving results.
    3. Focus on work. The coach was immersed in the team’s affairs and managed to take the club to a new level.

Thus, Amorim has already made history at Sporting and in the Portuguese league. He has already become a legend among local fans. It is only regrettable that Amorim was unable to achieve success with his ideas at a higher level.

  • FULL LIST: Footballers with most goals scored in a calendar year

FULL LIST: Footballers with most goals scored in a calendar year

Football has witnessed some extraordinary goal-scoring feats, but only a select few players have produced calendar-year numbers so outrageous they almost defy belief. From modern superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, and Kylian Mbappé to legendary icons such as Pelé, Gerd Müller, Romário, and Zico, the sport’s most prolific finishers have delivered seasons that rewrote what was thought possible in front of goal. Their records span different generations, leagues, and playing styles—but each year on this list represents a level of individual dominance rarely seen in world football.

These incredible tallies were forged through consistency, clinical finishing, and an unmatched hunger to score. They came in years when the world’s best strikers were at the peak of their powers, shattering domestic and international records alike. From Messi’s jaw-dropping 91-goal masterpiece in 2012 to Mbappé’s current chase of a 70-goal year.

Here are the top 11 greatest goal-scoring calendar years the game has ever witnessed:

    11. Cristiano Ronaldo – 61 Goals (2014)

At the height of his Real Madrid era, Cristiano Ronaldo delivered one of the most devastating goal-scoring years of his career in 2014, finishing with 61 strikes across all competitions. His Champions League campaign was especially spectacular—he fired in 14 goals, topping the scoring charts as Madrid lifted the trophy for the first time in over a decade.

Although Portugal’s 2014 World Cup campaign was largely forgettable, Ronaldo still found the net in their 2–1 victory over Ghana. By this period, hitting astronomical numbers had become routine for him, further cementing his status as one of football’s most prolific finishers.

    10. Kylian Mbappé – 62 Goals (2025)

Kylian Mbappé’s first full year at Real Madrid has been a whirlwind of goals. As of December 4, 2025, he has already struck 62 times, with four matches left to inflate that total—meaning a 70-goal year is within reach.

The French superstar has torn La Liga apart with 16 goals in 15 games and has been unplayable in the Champions League, scoring nine times in only five appearances. His first season in Spain ended trophyless, but his personal numbers never dipped; in 2025, he has elevated them even further.

    9. Cristiano Ronaldo – 63 Goals (2012)

Ronaldo’s 2012 season unfolded like a highlight reel, forming one of the peak chapters of his rivalry with Lionel Messi. He finished the year with 63 goals, inspired Real Madrid to a record 100-point La Liga title, and registered 46 league goals in 38 matches.

At Euro 2012, he dragged Portugal into the semi-finals with crucial goals against the Netherlands and Czechia. Although he didn’t clinch the Ballon d’Or that year, the brilliance of his 2012 campaign set the stage for the awards that would follow.

    8. Cristiano Ronaldo – 69 Goals (2013)

A year later, Ronaldo went even bigger. In 2013, he amassed 69 goals, dominating both La Liga and the Champions League. He finished as Europe’s top marksman with 12 goals in that season’s UCL and maintained monstrous consistency throughout the calendar year.

Despite Real Madrid not celebrating many team trophies that year, Ronaldo’s individual form reached its apex, earning him the Ballon d’Or and yet another place near the summit of all-time goalscoring seasons.

    7. Robert Lewandowski – 69 Goals (2021)

Robert Lewandowski’s 2021 campaign was nothing short of historic. The Bayern Munich striker shattered Gerd Müller’s long-standing Bundesliga record by scoring 41 league goals in a single season, and ended the calendar year with 69 goals overall.

He added another German record by scoring 43 Bundesliga goals in the year 2021 alone and finished as Europe’s top scorer. For Poland, he was equally impactful, netting three goals at the European Championships and continuing his scoring streak in World Cup qualifiers. Many still argue he deserved the Ballon d’Or that year.

    6. Romário – 72 Goals (2000)

Romário rolled back the years in 2000 with a phenomenal tally of 72 goals. The Vasco da Gama star looked unstoppable, punishing defences with the same killer instinct that had defined his prime.

Returning to the Brazilian national team after a long absence, he announced his comeback in style with a hat-trick against Bolivia and four more goals against Venezuela. Questions remain over the exact breakdown of his club goals that year, but his dominance in competitions like the Carioca Championship and Copa do Brasil is undisputed.

    5. Zico – 72 Goals (1979)

Zico, often labelled the forgotten genius among Brazil’s greats, delivered a masterpiece of a year in 1979. Playing as an attacking midfielder, he racked up an astonishing 72 goals—numbers unheard of for a non-striker.

He guided Flamengo to an undefeated state championship and finished as the top scorer with 34 goals. Internationally, Brazil reached the Copa América semi-finals, though Zico curiously did not feature in the decisive matches. Still, 1979 remains one of the clearest demonstrations of his extraordinary talent.

    4. Pelé – 72 Goals (1965)

Even in the middle years of his career, Pelé was a force of nature. In 1965, he produced another breathtaking season with 72 goals, many of them in friendlies that remain subject to debate.

Regardless, his influence was undeniable as he tore through both domestic competition with Santos and international fixtures with Brazil. His brilliance in 1965 helped reinforce his reputation as the most complete attacking player the sport had ever seen.

    3. Pelé – 75 Goals (1958)

If one year encapsulates Pelé’s early greatness, it is 1958. Then just 17, he stormed the World Cup with six goals—including a semi-final hat-trick—and added two more in Brazil’s iconic 5–2 victory over Sweden in the final.

At the club level, he was equally sensational, scoring 58 goals as Santos captured the league title. His 1958 campaign remains one of the most famous individual seasons in football history and an enduring reminder of his precocious genius.

    2. Gerd Müller – 85 Goals (1972)

For four decades, Gerd Müller stood alone at the pinnacle of calendar-year scoring. In 1972, “Der Bomber” accumulated 85 goals, terrorising defenders for Bayern Munich and West Germany alike.

He hit 20 goals for his country, including a decisive brace in the European Championship final against the USSR, while his 65 goals for Bayern helped secure the Bundesliga title and another Golden Boot. Müller’s 1972 remains one of the most extraordinary scoring feats ever achieved.

    1. Lionel Messi – 91 Goals (2012)

At the summit is Lionel Messi’s legendary 2012 campaign—a year so absurd it may never be matched. Messi tallied 91 goals for club and country, smashing Müller’s long-held record and producing one of the greatest statistical seasons in sports history.

He scored 79 times for Barcelona, breaking the club’s all-time scoring record, and added 12 goals for Argentina. Though Barça failed to win La Liga or the Champions League that year, Messi still collected the Copa del Rey, Supercopa de España, and Club World Cup.

His 50 league goals also remain the highest single-season tally in La Liga history. Even in an era of freakish goalscorers, Messi’s 2012 stands alone.

Super Eagles captain Ekong retires from international football

Super Eagles captain Williams Troost-Ekong has announced his retirement from international football.

In a heartfelt post on his official X page, the 32-year-old skipper wrote, “Honoured. Grateful. Forever a Super Eagle. Playing for Nigeria has been the greatest privilege of my life. The journey may end here, but my support never will. Here’s to the next chapter.”

Troost-Ekong retired with 83 caps, three medals, participation in five major tournaments, and a record as the highest goal-scoring defender in Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) history with five goals.

The Super Eagles are preparing for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco, scheduled from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, aiming to clinch the title for the fourth time after reaching the finals in the 2023 edition.
