  • Messi, Ronaldo take enduring rivalry to record sixth World Cup

Messi, Ronaldo take enduring rivalry to record sixth World Cup

Two adjacent transparent bins in London became the venue for a silent but heated debate in 2015, with smokers depositing their stubbed-out butts to settle a burning question: who was the best soccer player in the world, Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?

As a way to encourage people to use bins for their butts, the biggest career rivalry in 21st -century soccer proved to be an effective conduit.

A decade on, however, the debate still rages as the duo head towards becoming the first men to appear in six World Cups.

Ronaldo and Messi have each scored more than 800 goals for club and country, winning nine Champions Leagues and 13 Ballon d’Or trophies between them.

Messi’s fans argue that his World Cup triumph for Argentina in 2022 puts him top of the pile but Ronaldo-worshipers cite his titles across Europe’s major leagues, a tally of 954 goals, including 143 for his country, and being the most-capped male international footballer with 226 appearances for Portugal.

Next year’s tournament in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, when Ronaldo will be 41 and Messi turns 39, will surely be their last.

Ronaldo was 21 and Messi almost 19 when they became their countries’ youngest World Cup goalscorers when they debuted in the tournament in Germany.

Messi did not play in the quarter-finals, where Argentina were beaten by the hosts on penalties. The next day, Ronaldo scored the decisive penalty in a shootout with England, before facing heartbreak in the semi-finals, where Portugal lost to France.

WORLD CUP 2010: Ronaldo, the Portugal captain, scored only one goal in South Africa before Portugal lost to champions Spain in the last 16.

Messi, who failed to score in the tournament as Argentina were ousted by Germany for the second straight time, faced heavy criticism back home, with fans accusing him of caring less about his country than his club Barcelona.

WORLD CUP 2014: Portugal had a forgettable campaign as Ronaldo, who was risking his career playing with a knee injury, scored only once as they were eliminated in the group stage.

Messi, now his country’s captain, came into his own, however, scoring in every group game and winning four straight player-of-the-match awards.

Argentina, however, lost the final to Germany. A tearful Messi’s Golden Ball trophy was no consolation.

In the next two years, Argentina lost the finals of the Copa America and the Copa America Centenario, both to Chile on penalties. A heartbroken Messi announced his retirement from international football, but reversed his decision later.

WORLD CUP 2018: Both Argentina and Portugal suffered second-round exits. Messi scored only one goal in the group stage before defeat by France in the last 16.

Ronaldo, who had won the European Championship with Portugal two years earlier, scored a hat-trick in their first group fixture, a 3-3 draw with Spain. However, he missed a penalty against Iran, before Portugal lost to Uruguay in the second round.

The following year, Ronaldo helped Portugal win their first Nations League title, scoring a hat-trick in the semi-finals.

WORLD CUP 2022: Portugal were impressive, but for once it was not because of Ronaldo, who was dropped to the bench for the knockout stage as they lost in the quarter-finals.

Messi, however, delivered for his team from the start to finish.

He became the first player to score in every round of a World Cup, netting seven times between the group stage and the final, where he struck twice against France and netted Argentina’s first penalty as they won the shootout 4-2.

Messi finally stood alongside Diego Maradona in the hearts of Argentina’s fans.

For very different reasons it seemed as if the 2022 tournament would be the end of the World Cup road for both ageing superstars, but they appear to be set for one more crack.

  • IOC president calls for end to ‘finger-pointing’ in doping fight

IOC president calls for end to ‘finger-pointing’ in doping fight

International Olympic Committee president Kirsty Coventry and her World Anti-Doping Agency counterpart on Tuesday called for unity in the fight against performance-enhancing drugs following a fracture with the United States.

“Too often we’ve seen energy spent on division, finger-pointing and competing agendas,” Coventry told WADA’s World Conference on Doping in Sport, being held this week in the South Korean city of Busan.  “It has been difficult to watch this divide within our community.”

Her comments came nearly 18 months after an internal investigation cleared WADA of pro-China bias.

The agency was rocked by a scandal involving 23 Chinese swimmers who were cleared of intentionally doping after testing positive for a banned heart drug in 2021.

Chinese investigators absolved the swimmers – some of whom went on to win Olympic gold in Tokyo that year – of wrongdoing, saying that the athletes had been exposed to the drug via a contaminated hotel kitchen.

WADA opted not to independently investigate the matter, sparking criticism, especially from the United States and its anti-doping organisation, USADA.

Following WADA’s decision, the US government withdrew $3.6 million in funding, resulting in the removal of US representatives from the body’s executive committee.

“There is only one fight that we should be fighting – and that is the fight against doping,” Coventry told the gathering in Busan.

“But instead, at times, we have been turning on each other. The only people who benefit from this disunity are the drugs cheaters.”

Taking a similar line, WADA president Witold Banka did not reference any one country by name but said that “some voices have chosen confrontation over cooperation, speaking as if their nations or institutions stand above others, as if only they acted with integrity”.

He added: “To those who behave as though they come from ‘better’ systems, expecting the world to follow their personal crusades, we say respectfully but firmly: no.

“Anti-doping does not belong to one nation or one personality.”

  • La Liga: Barcelona recover to lead Atletico

La Liga: Barcelona recover to lead Atletico

Barcelona opened up a four-point lead at the top of La Liga as they came from behind to defeat Atletico Madrid 3-1.

Raphinha cancelled out Alex Baena’s opener for the visitors at the Nou Camp, before Dani Olmo’s smart finish turned the match around with 25 minutes left to play and Ferran Torres scored a late third.

Barcelona trailed league leaders Real Madrid by five points after a 2-1 defeat in El Clasico in October, but five games later have a buffer at the top having played one game more. Los Blancos will travel to Bilbao to face Athletic Club on Wednesday.

Atletico took a 19th-minute lead when Baena latched on to a long pass over Barcelona’s high defensive line and beat goalkeeper Joan Garcia with a dinked finish.

The assistant referee flagged for offside, but the goal was given after a video assistant referee (VAR) check.

Raphinha drew Hansi Flick’s side level seven minutes later when he ran on to Pedri’s precision through ball, rounded Jan Oblak and finished into the empty goal.

Barca dominated the remainder of the first half and were awarded a penalty when Pablo Barrios felled Olmo, but Robert Lewandowski blazed his effort well over the crossbar.

The second half descended into a breathless end-to-end encounter, and Barca took advantage when Olmo dragged a shot into the bottom corner following a mazy dribble from Lamine Yamal.

Diego Simeone’s side should have equalised when Thiago Almada somehow missed an open goal after rounding Garcia, but Torres wrapped up the win with a close-range finish after controlling Alejandro Balde’s cross.

Victory for Barcelona was soured by a shoulder injury sustained by Olmo in the act of scoring, as well as glaring missed by Lewandowski and Raphinha.

  • Haaland breaks record as Man City edge Fulham in nine-goal thriller

Haaland breaks record as Man City edge Fulham in nine-goal thriller

Erling Haaland became the quickest player to reach 100 goals in Premier League history on a night when Manchester City ramped up pressure on leaders Arsenal by fending off Fulham’s impressive fightback.

Norway international Haaland got his landmark goal in the 17th minute of Tuesday’s game at Craven Cottage, firing in first time from Jeremy Doku’s cross.

It meant he reached the century in 111 league games, 13 fewer than it took previous record holder Alan Shearer.

The goal also ended a mini drought for Haaland, having gone three consecutive games without scoring. It was his 15th goal in 14 league games this season but was just a taste of what was to come.

Haaland got the assist for Manchester City’s second, slipping the ball through for Tijjani Reijnders to coolly lift the ball over Bernd Leno and into the back of the net.

Leeds came back from 2-0 down to level 2-2 against Pep Guardiola’s side at the weekend before Phil Foden got a late winner, and the in-form forward must have thought he had quashed thoughts of a repeat of that when he got City’s third.

A fantastic header by Emile Smith Rowe moments later gave Fulham some hope at 3-1 down, but Foden got his fourth goal in two games soon after the break, smartly firing home at the near post from Haaland’s ball.

Doku’s shot then deflected in off Sander Berge to put City in a seemingly unassailable 5-1 lead.

But Fulham would not give in and Alex Iwobi curled in their second from 20 yards to signal a continuing threat to City, before substitute Samuel Chukwueze had the home side dreaming of an incredible comeback.

First, he drove in from a cross, before placing a neat finish into the back of the net six minutes later.

Momentum was with Fulham as home fans roared them on and City’s followers watched on nervously in the away end, and Josh King had a shot cleared off the line in the final seconds.

But City held on to secure a win that means they are just two points behind Arsenal, albeit having played a game more, with the Gunners hosting Brentford on Wednesday.

Fulham, meanwhile, are six points above the relegation zone but have played a game more than those sides below them.

  • Crypto Logos, Game Icons, and the Hidden Attention Economy of Online Gaming

Crypto Logos, Game Icons, and the Hidden Attention Economy of Online Gaming

Open the home screen on almost any smartphone, and you will see the same pattern. Tiny circles and squares compete for attention, from banking apps to games to crypto wallets. Crypto branding and gambling now share this space, so designers focus on logos that can win a split-second glance without confusing the eye.

Modern crypto brands often use flat color, single letters, or very simple geometric shapes. Detailed emblems blur when they shrink to icon size, especially on older phones or in bright sunlight. Simple logos survive poor lighting and fast scrolling. They also make it easier for users to link a color and shape to a basic action, such as sending a payment or opening a chart. The same focus on clarity now shapes how casino and slot brands present themselves on mobile devices.

From coin icons to slot tiles

You can see the same logic when you open a mobile slot lobby. Instead of long menus, you meet a grid of tiles with bright art, fruit symbols, lucky sevens, and tags that say new or hot. These images follow online casino icon design trends that borrow from mobile games and social apps. In Canada, where online entertainment has grown and a lot of casino play now happens on phones, teams work hard on that first screen because it sets the tone for the whole session.

On crypto-friendly brands, the kinds of slot collections that appeal to people who search for the best online slots Canada are arranged in rows of tiles, each one showing the game name, theme, and a clear call to play. The lobby often mixes seasonal art, jackpot-themed titles, and badges for popular picks, all tuned to keep the thumb moving.

Filters for newest releases, volatility levels, or featured games usually sit above the grid, while every tile competes quietly through color, animation, and familiar motifs. The layout is efficient and clear, which reflects well on the product team, yet it also feeds the wider attention economy by making it easy to keep scrolling.

This short street interview video takes this idea further and demonstrates why it matters so much.

    **PLEASE EMBED THIS LINK**

Walkers see the symbols for Bitcoin, Ethereum, Tether, Dogecoin, and Solana and try to name them. Many spot the biggest coins, demonstrating how brand recognition works and the value of instant recognition for your brand. You’ll also notice how these designs also stick with simplicity, valuing clean lines and bold colors over complex shapes or layouts.

The attention economy behind bright icons

The attention economy treats focus as a limited resource, so products are built to catch and hold it. In user experience design, that often shows up in a few simple patterns.

    • Strong contrast between the icon and the background, so shapes stay clear while you scroll
    • Repeated colors or letters so the brand feels familiar
    • Small motion on tiles that the operator wants to highlight
    • Very short labels that you can read at a glance

For mobile casinos and crypto platforms, these patterns are often combined with personalization. Over time, the icons or tiles you tap most can move into the first row or an easy-access favorites tab. The result is a screen that mirrors your past choices, which quietly encourages you to repeat the same behaviors, rather than question them.

A three-question pause before you tap

Of course, you might be wondering if there’s a downside to this: if you’re not thinking much before you tap, are these logos manipulating you? Not really! However, if this is an area of concern for you, you can implement a bit of a pause before you click on a logo, and ask yourself the following questions:

    1. Do I know who is behind this logo and where the company is based?
    2. Do I understand the product, whether it is a wallet, exchange, slot game, or something else?
    3. Do I know what tools this platform offers to help me set boundaries around time and spending if I decide to use it?

In the attention economy, you cannot set the rules for how logos or slot tiles look. You can decide how often you respond to them. Slowing down before you tap any bright symbol can turn a passing impulse into an informed choice, whether the icon in front of you is a coin, a slot, or something else.

What gaming research tells us about attention

Recent work from Activision Blizzard Media on “8 ways gaming captures attention” shows how games hold focus through immersion, positive emotions, and mobile-first play. In other words, the same forces that keep players locked into match three levels also keep our eyes on bright icons and in-game ads. Seeing that link makes it easier to spot when crypto and slot design are guiding your focus, so you can choose when to step away.

Chelle has openly stated his goal to win Nigeria’s fourth AFCON title, building on their previous victories in 1980, 1994 and 2013. He expressed confidence that the team will be mentally prepared, having played under pressure since March.

“Of course we want to win it (AFCON title) ,”Chelle  said in  a recent interview with CAF .“ Personally, I want to win AFCON.

“My last — and first — AFCON was a fantastic experience. I think Morocco will be a great tournament, too. The players feel the same.

The former African Footballer of the Year   scored his second Serie A goal in Atalanta’s 2-0 home win against Fiorentina at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on Sunday. He also grabbed a goal in the La Dea’s 3-0 Champions League win away to Eintracht Frankfurt last week.
